I am happy to write a few lines in this issue of University Newsletter which highlights significant work and contributions made by the University in the field of teaching and learning, research and innovation, sports and other activities undertaken during July-December 2019. Over the past 39 years, has grown into a multidisciplinary and research oriented university. The University has been ranked in the second position at the national level in UI Green Metric World University Ranking and in the 178th position at the global level. It is among the 26 State Universities in the country selected for the GIAN programme. Mangalore University is one of the top 50 Universities at the national level on the basis of QS World University Ranking (48th place). The University obtained 4 star status and 6th place at State level as per the K-SURF Ranking of 2019. The important events that took place during the second half of 2019 include the 40th Foundation Day Celebration, International and national conferences, GIAN Programmes, etc. Our teaching faculty have rendered themselves creditably in their teaching and research activities. Our students have performed well in academics, sports and cultural activities at the national level. The students of the University are actively participating in Swachh Bharat programme and other social activities like blood donation, creating health and plastic pollution awareness among general public, etc. The non-teaching staff, research scholars and students have contributed immensely to the overall growth of the University. I would like to congratulate all of them for their consistent support towards achieving excellence in higher education. I appreciate the efforts of the editorial committee in bringing out this issue of the Newsletter.

The programme was conducted as a part of ‘Swachhata Pakhwada’ an initiative of Swachh Bharat Mission by Govt. of India. The post-graduate students and research scholars of Biosciences department along with other university staff sensitized the general public of Konaje and Phajeer Grama Panchyath regions about the hazards of single use plastics and effective management of plastic disposal.
