Students interested in applying for NHS may use the following criteria to enhance their summer experiences, putting them in a better position for acceptance into NHS in the fall. In addition, obtaining adult signatures verifying your hours of service work and leadership opportunities will save you time in the future.

Rising Seniors – Class of 2021

Six Tips for the Summer Before Senior Year

Rising high school seniors have one last summer before adulthood. No matter whether you have a job, are taking a course, or have other summer obligations, there is time both for fun AND for strengthening future plans. Here are some tips for summer. Check out your junior STAR Conference folder for many tips, ideas and resources.

Think about your interests. Think about what is important to you and why. What do you find interesting? What kinds of problems do you like to solve? Then look toward the future: What careers are related to those interests? Which campuses can serve those interests and/or help you achieve your goals? Those are the campuses you should apply to.

Immerse yourself in something. Spend your summertime productively. Read books about a subject you find interesting. Get a job. Attend a summer camp. Read high-quality newspapers or magazines. Develop a new skill or advance one you already have. Volunteer. Did we mention you should read? (YES, three times!) Shadow someone who has a career you might enjoy. Learn in different ways!

Start a résumé. Consider it as a list of things that you’ve done during your high school years. Include activities, volunteer experiences, jobs, honors and awards, and anything else that is important about you. You will refer to this list many times as you complete your applications for admission and scholarships. You can also give this list to someone who agrees to write a letter of recommendation for you during the summer.

Prepare for your applicant’s essays. Many campuses want to know what you bring to the campus community. A way to begin is to think about your experiences with work, classes, volunteering, and other ways that you spend your time. What is meaningful about these experiences? What have you learned, and how have you changed? How do your experiences make you unique?

Visit campuses? The best time to visit a campus is during the academic year when there are lots of students around. However, if you haven’t had the chance to tour campuses until summer, make sure to still go. Take along a parent or other adult. The campus won’t be full of activity like during the academic year, but you will still learn a lot from the visit. Remember that most colleges will be offering virtual campus visits – visit the website of your college of choice for more information!

Begin your application! UW campuses open their applications on August 1 st . Western TC’s application is now open and private schools host free college application weeks each summer.

FREDDY’S FOOTNOTES 22 FREDDY’S FOOTNOTES

ATTENTION RISING SENIORS: Campus Visits Now is the best time to get out and visit campuses, or visit campuses virtually, (technical, 2 or 4 year) and get a feel for which school “fits” for you! While it’s important to meet with admissions counselors and take the official campus tour, it’s also helpful to take your own personal tour. Check out the places they don’t show you, talk to a student in the student union about what they like about the school, as well as what they are frustrated with. Pick up a campus newspaper to see what’s important to students and soak in the environment. If you don’t feel like the school is a good fit, it may be a difficult place for you to find success.

WI Private College Week Wisconsin Private Colleges and Universities invite students to visit their campuses through online open houses during the week of July 27-August 1, 2020. Visit www.Wisconsinsprivatecolleges.org/visit to register for your tour(s).

College Bound Student Athletes Students who plan to compete in D1 or D2 athletics in college must register with the NCAA in order for you to be eligible to compete prior to enrollment this fall. 1. Log into his or her account at www.eligibilitycenter.org 2. Follow the directions on the page to register for the clearinghouse

If you have questions, please contact Mr. Wojta in room 105, or call 783-4571 Ext. 5105.

Summer School

Academic courses will meet online from June 8 to July 17 (no school on July 1, 2, and 3) this summer at OHS. Remember that students can miss no more than 2 days of class in order to earn academic credit.

Please watch your school email for additional information from your instructors regarding summer school. Thank you for your patience as we navigate a new system this year!

Accelerated & AP Class Summer Readings and Assignments

OHS typically requires summer reading and work for certain accelerated courses. Due to the school closure, we will not be requiring summer reading/assignments for any accelerated courses this year. Enjoy your summer!

UW System Placement Tests All remaining in-person Regional Testing events for students to take the UW placement tests, both the paper-based and computer-based tests, are currently suspended. A listing of the affected sites is posted here .

Note that some campuses are in the process of updating their plans for summer events including advising and orientation. Deadlines, policies and recommendations around placement testing may have changed, or may change in the coming weeks.

As the situation continues to evolve, UW campuses and the Center for Placement Testing will be offering alternatives to in-person regional placement testing.

As of July 1, 2012 Wisconsin’s State Statute regarding concussions was put into effect. Below is basic information as to what the state statute states and what needs to take place prior to each sport season.

"At the beginning of a season for a youth athletic activity, the person operating the youth athletic activity shall distribute a concussion and head injury information sheet to each person who will be coaching that youth athletic activity and to each person who wishes to participate in that youth athletic activity. No person may participate in a youth athletic activity unless the person returns the information sheet signed by the person and, if he or she is under the age of 19, by his or her parent or guardian." This information sheet is part of your online registration materials.

Every other year, students will need to complete a concussion test, provided through our school trainer.

On Monday, August 3rd, the Booster Club will be holding its annual golf outing which is one of the biggest fundraisers of the year. The golf outing helps raise money for athletes of all sports at Onalaska High School. For more information, check out the next page or the booster club website at: http://www.onaboosters.com/ .

Dear School District of Onalaska Families:

The School District of Onalaska is committed to providing student meals to anyone under 18 continuing this summer until August 14. In order to continue this service, it is important that everyone who prepares and delivers meals stays healthy.

• We will continue to centralize distribution at Onalaska Middle School on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays and provide two days’ worth of meals each day. • Drive-up meals will be available at the Onalaska Middle School Parking Lot off 8th Avenue North from 10:00-11:30 a.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays and distributed from the School Nutrition garage doors in the parent drop off lane. There will be no meal service on Tuesdays or Thursdays. • Two lunches and two breakfasts will be distributed for each child. Overall, this will provide lunch and breakfast for six days of the week.

Please remember the following when going to a meal site:

• PLEASE STAY IN YOUR VEHICLE. • Drive up, roll down your back window, and let staff know how many meals are requested. No names are needed. • Nutrition employees will put meals in through your back window while you remain in your vehicle. • If you are picking up your order as a walk-up we will have a table set up with the meals in order to keep a safe distance.

We want to continue providing meals to all children who need them. If you have not previously indicated the need for meals and the need has arisen, please use the email address below to indicate the number of daily meals you anticipate picking up.

If any of these changes pose a hardship to your family and you cannot make it to the meal pickup site, please email us at [email protected] for assistance.
