US Governor Philip D. Murphy (New Jersey) Annette Riedel, Senior Editor, Deutschlandfunk Kultur Berlin Transatlantic Forum 2018: “Present at the New Creation? Tech. Power. Democracy.” October 16, 2018 3 4 PREFACE Dear Friends of Aspen Germany, In 2017, we also had three US mayors in quick succession as guests of Aspen Germany: Mayor Pete Buttigieg of 2017 and 2018 were years of world-wide political and South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Eric Garcetti of Los Angeles, economic changes. CPL-White-Paper-09-January-2013
London Metropolitan University: Centre for Progressive Leadership White Paper: Managing Leadership from a Systemic Perspective ISSUED JANUARY 2013 LONDON METROPOLITAN UNIVERSITY BUSINESS SCHOOL A CPL WHITE PAPER Managing Leadership from a Systemic Perspective Dr William Tate ABSTRACT How can an organisation best understand, expand, release, promote, improve, combine and apply leadership capability suited to its needs? The traditional model of individual leadership behaviour and development is no longer in tune with latest knowledge of the dynamics entailed in leadership performance in today’s complex environment. Development tools drawn from psychology insufficiently address the realities of organisational life. Understanding of the new sciences and the study of systems, combined with progressive 21stC social values, demand that a new perspective of leadership be taken, reflecting the holistic context in which leadership processes are now required to operate. This paper presents a systemic view of leadership, where the leadership role is one factor in an intricate system of interacting elements that affect how leadership is best applied in organisation settings and how it can be improved. The model challenges conventional approaches to the definition, specification and codification of leadership, as well as the way leadership is studied, how it is assessed and developed. Implications for various academic disciplines are considered, and a range of HR processes are discussed, including leadership development, accountability, coaching and performance management. THE VIEWS EXPRESSED IN THIS PAPER ARE THOSE OF THE AUTHOR AND DO NOT NECESSARILY REPRESENT THOSE OF LONDON METROPOLITAN UNIVERSITY BUSINESS SCHOOL OR THE CENTRE FOR PROGRESSIVE LEADERSHIP. © William Tate, The Institute for Systemic Leadership, 09 January 2013 1 London Metropolitan University: Centre for Progressive Leadership White Paper: Managing Leadership from a Systemic Perspective 1. -

1 Sweden will be the guest of honour at the Bologna Children’s Book Fair in 2013. This is the largest book fair for literature for children and young adults and our participation as guest of honour is a unique opportunity for Swedish authors and illustrators to reach readers far beyond Sweden’s borders, and to promote children’s and young people’s right to culture internationally. Our participation starts in 2012 and marks the 10th anniversary of the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award. This will be celebrated with various events including an exhibition featuring previous award recipients. Last year over 1.600 books for children and young adults were published in Sweden. Mats Kempe, author and librarian has been given the almost impossible task of choosing and presenting a selection of last year’s rich offering. For many years he has been planning to assemble an in-depth study of all known card play techniques and their classification. The only thing he lacked was time for the project; now, having recently retired, he has accom- plished his ambitious task. It has been my privilege to follow its progress and watch the book take shape. A book such as this should not to be put into a beginner’s hands, but it should become a well-thumbed reference source for all players who want to improve their game. -

Vladimir P. Suslov, DE: Under-Secretary for Political and Security Council Affairs SUBJECT: Disarmament Affairs I have always felt that it is very desirable to bring a greater degree of clarity into the sphere of responsibility within the Secretariat with regard to the all important field of disarmament, and perhaps there is now an opportunity to do away with the rather artificial division of responsibilities in disarmament affairs that has existed for some time. The Department of PSCA has always borne exclusive responsibility for all the work on disarmament and related fields. The Disarmament Affairs Group in this Department has attended to both the substantive and servicing functions connected with the problem. In particular, officers from the Department have been responsible for servicing the ENDC meetings in Geneva. In the circumstances stated above and in thelight of the experience during the past three years, it would seem that there is really no need to have a very senior officer of the rank of Under-Secretary present constantly in Geneva or, indeed, to have such an officer dealing with the problem in New York. -
