Vozab, D. Press Trends in Croatia 2011. Monitoring medija 2012 Centar za istraživanje medija i komunikacije, Fakultet politickih znanosti, Sveucilište u Zagrebu Monitoring medija 1/2012 Press trends in Croatia 2011 Dina Vozab Centre for Media and Communication Research of the Faculty of Political Science, University of Zagreb, has taken the role of collecting data for the World Press Trends 2011 on newspaper industry in Croatia. World Press Trends is an annual report published by WAN-IFRA (World Association Of Newspapers And News Publishers) which presents statistics and analyses on newspaper industries worldwide. The report covers 233 countries and territories, among them Croatia. The following text summarizes the Croatian report on newspaper industry and trends in 2011. Production and circulation The economic problems will affect both direct and indirect support for newspaper industry. Consumers purchased 6, 84% less culture and recreation products (newspapers belong to this category according to Croatian Bureau of Statistics classification) in 2010 when compared to 2009. GfK research showed that in 2011 58% of surveyed households had expenditures in this category and these households spend less in this category than for some other products. The overall lower consumption affects indirect support for newspaper industry which is exemplified in lower investment in advertising in print media (16% decline in 2011 compared to previous year). Total revenue in newspaper publishing industry was 10, 62% lower in 2011 than in 2010. Total circulation of daily newspaper declined for 7,2% in 2011 when compared to previous year and total of 46 printed publications were erased from Croatian Chamber of Economy database, therefore officially closed.

  • Framing Croatia's Politics of Memory and Identity
Workshop: War and Identity in the Balkans and the Middle East WORKING PAPER WORKSHOP: War and Identity in the Balkans and the Middle East WORKING PAPER Author: Taylor A. McConnell, School of Social and Political Science, University of Edinburgh Title: “KRVatska”, “Branitelji”, “Žrtve”: (Re-)framing Croatia’s politics of memory and identity Date: 3 April 2018 Workshop: War and Identity in the Balkans and the Middle East WORKING PAPER “KRVatska”, “Branitelji”, “Žrtve”: (Re-)framing Croatia’s politics of memory and identity Taylor McConnell, School of Social and Political Science, University of Edinburgh Web: taylormcconnell.com | Twitter: @TMcConnell_SSPS | E-mail: [email protected] Abstract This paper explores the development of Croatian memory politics and the construction of a new Croatian identity in the aftermath of the 1990s war for independence. Using the public “face” of memory – monuments, museums and commemorations – I contend that Croatia’s narrative of self and self- sacrifice (hence “KRVatska” – a portmanteau of “blood/krv” and “Croatia/Hrvatska”) is divided between praising “defenders”/“branitelji”, selectively remembering its victims/“žrtve”, and silencing the Serb minority. While this divide is partially dependent on geography and the various ways the Croatian War for Independence came to an end in Dalmatia and Slavonia, the “defender” narrative remains preeminent. As well, I discuss the division of Croatian civil society, particularly between veterans’ associations and regional minority bodies, which continues to disrupt amicable relations among the Yugoslav successor states and places Croatia in a generally undesired but unshakable space between “Europe” and the Balkans. 1 Workshop: War and Identity in the Balkans and the Middle East WORKING PAPER Table of Contents Abstract ...................................................................................................................................................................

February 13, 1992 Volume 4, Issue 4 His Excellency Franjo Tudjman President of the Republic of Croatia Radi ev Trg 2 41000 Zagreb Croatia Dear President Tudjman: The U.S. Helsinki Watch Committee is deeply concerned by reports of serious human rights abuses by forces responsible to the Croatian government and by individual extremists in Croatia. Our own investigations of these reports, conducted during a series of fact-finding missions to Croatia in the past year, indicate that many of these reports are well-founded. We call upon you to investigate the abuses enumerated in this letter and to punish those responsible for them. We call upon you to take immediate measures to ensure that such violations of human rights do not occur again. The abuses described in this letter include violations of the laws of war in the current conflict between Croatian and Serbian forces and the Yugoslav army, including the summary execution of civilians and disarmed combatants; the torture and mistreatment of detainees; arbitrary arrests and disappearances; destruction of civilian property and the killing of journalists covering the war. In addition to violations connected with the war, Helsinki Watch has also documented restrictions on freedom of expression and the press and interference with the independence of the judiciary. Finally, we are gravely concerned about the harassment, discrimination and rising violence against Serbs not engaged in the armed conflict in Croatia. Rules of War Violations in Croatia by Croatian Forces Violations of the rules of war are often committed by local police officers and members of the Croatian army1 in areas which are under heavy siege by Serbian forces and the Yugoslav army.

  • The Media on the Subject of Media Literacy in the Croatian Education System
The Media on the Subject of Media Literacy in the Croatian Education System Preliminary communication _ DOI 10.22522/cmr20170226 _ received on 28 July 2017 UDK 316.774:316.773.3 _ 003.02:37.014(497.5) Danijel Labaš University Department of Croatian Studies, University of Zagreb, Croatia. Email: [email protected] (corresponding author) Petra Marinčić Television Zapad, Croatia. Email: [email protected] Abstract Media literacy, which has been rapidly developing in many European countries during the past decades, is still at its beginning in Croatia. It remains excluded from the formal education programmes. Meanwhile, there are various informal types of media education dedicated to information and media literacy, usually thanks to the efforts of non-governmental organisations (Labaš, 2015). What kind of impact did Croatian Internet news portals have on media literacy, and what is their position on it and its place in the education system during the debate about the curricular reform, and were they encouraging debate with the interested public in this period? This paper aims to answer these questions by investigating the news portals’ writings (Večernji list, Jutarnji list, Slobodna Dalmacija, Novi list, Glas Slavonije and 24 sata) in the time period between 1 January and 1 July 2016. Keywords: media, education, media and information literacy, Croatian education system 120 COMMUNICATION MANAGEMENT REVIEW, 2 (2017) 2 PRELIMINARY COMMUNICATION 1. Introduction Media education that has been developing for decades in many European countries is still at its beginning in Croatia, and it still has not been included in the programmes of regular formal education in a satisfactory manner.

  • Croatian Helsinki Committee for Human Rights
CROATIAN HELSINKI COMMITTEE FOR HUMAN RIGHTS Zagreb, December 15, 2003 MEDIA AND ELECTIONS 2003 ANALYSIS OF DAILY NEWSPAPERS Alija Hodžic The Media and Elections 2003 monitoring project covered the items in daily newspapers, which directly or indirectly related to the activities of the relevant actors of political life in Croatia. The method used in the research was the analysis of the content. The analysis included items, which were published in six daily newspapers (Vjesnik, Vecernji list, Jutarnji list, Slobodna Dalmacija, Novi list and Glas Slavonije) in the period since October 12until November 22, 2003. First three newspapers belong to the category of national newspapers, while other three belong to the category of regional newspapers. Two daily newspapers are majority state-owned (Vjesnik and Slobodna Dalmacija) and two are owned by domestic (mostly small) stock owners (Novi list and Glas Slavonije), while one is half-owned by domestic and foreign owners (Jutarnji list, which is the only new established daily after 1990), and one is majority- owned by foreigners. The monitored period, in spite of the fact that it represents the continuous flow, has not been analysed as a unique entity. It was divided in two separate entities: the period, which includes time of the official pre-electoral campaign (which started on November 6) and the period prior to the beginning of the official campaign (October 12 until November 5). The reasons for such division are found in the basic differences between these two periods. Specifically in the period of the official pre-electoral campaign, the election candidates were well known (political parties, coalitions, independent candidates, as well as individuals).
