Monitoring medija 2012 Centar za istraživanje medija i komunikacije, Fakultet politickih znanosti, Sveucilište u Zagrebu Monitoring medija 1/2012 Press trends in Croatia 2011 Dina Vozab Centre for Media and Communication Research of the Faculty of Political Science, University of Zagreb, has taken the role of collecting data for the World Press Trends 2011 on newspaper industry in Croatia. World Press Trends is an annual report published by WAN-IFRA (World Association Of Newspapers And News Publishers) which presents statistics and analyses on newspaper industries worldwide. The report covers 233 countries and territories, among them Croatia. The following text summarizes the Croatian report on newspaper industry and trends in 2011. Production and circulation The economic problems will affect both direct and indirect support for newspaper industry. Consumers purchased 6, 84% less culture and recreation products (newspapers belong to this category according to Croatian Bureau of Statistics classification) in 2010 when compared to 2009. GfK research showed that in 2011 58% of surveyed households had expenditures in this category and these households spend less in this category than for some other products. The overall lower consumption affects indirect support for newspaper industry which is exemplified in lower investment in advertising in print media (16% decline in 2011 compared to previous year). Total revenue in newspaper publishing industry was 10, 62% lower in 2011 than in 2010. Total circulation of daily newspaper declined for 7,2% in 2011 when compared to previous year and total of 46 printed publications were erased from Croatian Chamber of Economy database, therefore officially closed.

Of course, the media always play a key role in providing quality information to the general public, with the aim of better understanding all the benefits that these Chinese initiatives can bring to Bosnia and Herzegovina. Also, the media can have a great influence on decision makers by creating a positive environment and by accurate and objective information. Therefore, when it comes to media articles related to these topics, it is important to look at the situation objectively and professionally. The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview of the media treatment of the Belt and Road Initiative and Platform "17+1" in Bosnia and Herzegovina, quantitative measuring of the total number of media releases dealing with these topics in the media with editorial board or visible editorial policy, and their qualitative analysis, as well as the analysis of additional, special relevant articles.

Using the public “face” of memory – monuments, museums and commemorations – I contend that Croatia’s narrative of self and self- sacrifice (hence “KRVatska” – a portmanteau of “blood/krv” and “Croatia/Hrvatska”) is divided between praising “defenders”/“branitelji”, selectively remembering its victims/“žrtve”, and silencing the Serb minority. While this divide is partially dependent on geography and the various ways the Croatian War for Independence came to an end in Dalmatia and Slavonia, the “defender” narrative remains preeminent.     SERBIA Jovanka Matić and Dubravka Valić Nedeljković porocilo.indb 327 20.5.2014 9:04:47 INTRODUCTION Serbia’s transition to democratic governance started in 2000. Reconstruction of the media system – aimed at developing free, independent and pluralistic media – was an important part of reform processes. After 13 years of democratisation eff orts, no one can argue that a new media system has not been put in place. Th e system is pluralistic; the media are predominantly in private ownership; the legal framework includes European democratic standards; broadcasting is regulated by bodies separated from executive state power; public service broadcasters have evolved from the former state-run radio and tel- evision company which acted as a pillar of the fallen autocratic regime. However, there is no public consensus that the changes have produced more positive than negative results. Th e media sector is liberalized but this has not brought a better-in- formed public. Media freedom has been expanded but it has endangered the concept of socially responsible journalism. Among about 1200 media outlets many have neither po- litical nor economic independence. Th e only industrial segments on the rise are the enter- tainment press and cable channels featuring reality shows and entertainment. Th e level of professionalism and reputation of journalists have been drastically reduced. Th e current media system suff ers from many weaknesses. Media legislation is incom- plete, inconsistent and outdated. Privatisation of state-owned media, stipulated as mandato- ry 10 years ago, is uncompleted. Th e media market is very poorly regulated resulting in dras- tically unequal conditions for state-owned and private media.
