ABSTRACT The Anglo-Saxon literary tradition reveals a widespread desire to situate England’s local history and customs with the patterns of universal Christianity. Dominant among the texts that survive from the period are saints’ lives, spanning Latin and Old English, poetry and prose. Sanctifying History: Hagiography and the Construction o f an Anglo-Saxon Christian Past explores the ways in which Anglo- Saxon authors such as Bede, Felix, the anonymous poets of Guthlac A and B, Cynewulf and Tilfric draw upon existing hagiographic traditions to articulate and explore England’s place in the patterns of Christian time. These writers rewrite and reffame inherited narratives of sanctity, in the process crafting a synthesis between the newly- minted Christian history of a convert nation and the historical and theological traditions of the Christian faith. The literary interest in ancestral history offers a means by which the lessons of the past can be used to invigorate a Christian present. The first chapter of this dissertation examines the writings of the Venerable Bede. His Ecclesiastical History o f the English People (731 C.E.) was the first work to offer the English a coherent narrative of a national past, providing the foundation for a local tradition of Christianity. The career of the saint that Bede constructs through figures such as Germanus and Lupus, Gregory the Great, and Aidan unites the disparate ii Reproduced with permission of the copyright owner. Further reproduction prohibited without permission. elements of England’s Christian history into a reenacted paradigm of conversion. This exemplary pattern finds its final fulfillment in Cuthbert, England’s national saint whose career reconciles these potentially divisive traditions. The second chapter focuses on Guthlac, a seventh-century Mercian hermit whose life survives in both Felix’s Vita sancti Guthlaci and in two Old English poems, Guthlac A and B. While the Latin legend presents the English saint as a historical figure influential in the cultural and political interests of his time, the Old English poems situate the saint within the framework of salvation rather than local history. These versions o f the legend reveal a change in the use of the past from commemorative and ideological to devotional and pedagogical, a shift that broadly reflects the Old English poetic interest in eschatology. The third chapter continues this exploration into Old English verse hagiography by focusing on two Cynewulf poems, Fates o f the Apostles and Elene. Both of these poems bring the missionary age of the Christian Church into an Anglo-Saxon setting, finding in the past the patterns of spiritual life. Cynewulfs epilogues model the act of reading this past, an act echoed in the events of Elene as the poem’s characters engage in the process of interpreting and reconciling the threads of history into the substance of spiritual truth. Fates and Elene present a fragmented vision of the past that finds unity in the Christian narrative, a vision that offers important insight into the imaginative reconstruction of Anglo-Saxon history. The final chapter examines the vision of Christian tradition reflected in the sermons of /Elfric. His Catholic Homilies (c. 990 C.E.) offer a primer of salvation history and Christian time from its birth in Genesis to its completion at Judgment Day. As in Elene, Ifric displays a concern with establishing Christianity’s claim on its Old Testament past, and seeks to articulate the iii Reproduced with permission of the copyright owner. England’s own conversion is included through Gregory the Great and Cuthbert, saints whose lives brought the Anglo-Saxons within the boundaries of the Roman Church. Moreover, /Elfric’s sermon collection incorporates these assembled narratives of the Christian tradition into the framework of contemporaneous Anglo-Saxon devotion, locating in the legends and texts of the past spiritual instruction for the present. This project as a whole addresses the various ways in which Anglo-Saxon writers worked to create visions of sanctified history. These hagiographic works offer narratives in which the universal exemplars and patterns of Christian history are integrated into the social institutions and literary genres of Anglo-Saxon England, and the literary text of the saint’s life creates a sympathetic bond between the past and the values of the present. In this way the study of hagiography illuminates the Anglo- Saxon transformation of the cultural past. iv Reproduced with permission of the copyright owner.     Lesser Feasts and Fasts 2018 Conforming to General Convention 2018 1 Preface Christians have since ancient times honored men and women whose lives represent heroic commitment to Christ and who have borne witness to their faith even at the cost of their lives. Such witnesses, by the grace of God, live in every age. The criteria used in the selection of those to be commemorated in the Episcopal Church are set out below and represent a growing consensus among provinces of the Anglican Communion also engaged in enriching their calendars. What we celebrate in the lives of the saints is the presence of Christ expressing itself in and through particular lives lived in the midst of specific historical circumstances. In the saints we are not dealing primarily with absolutes of perfection but human lives, in all their diversity, open to the motions of the Holy Spirit. Many a holy life, when carefully examined, will reveal flaws or the bias of a particular moment in history or ecclesial perspective. It should encourage us to realize that the saints, like us, are first and foremost redeemed sinners in whom the risen Christ’s words to St. Paul come to fulfillment, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” The “lesser feasts” provide opportunities for optional observance. They are not intended to replace the fundamental celebration of Sunday and major Holy Days. As the Standing Liturgical Commission and the General Convention add or delete names from the calendar, successive editions of this volume will be published, each edition bearing in the title the date of the General Convention to which it is a response.

THE following is an attempt to give a brief collective account of the tombs of the Kings and Archbishops in St. Augustine's Abbey, both of those of which some remains have been found; and of those of which a record is preserved in writing. How the bodies of the Kings and Archbishops came to be buried in St. Augustine's is explained in Bede's descrip- tion. of the founding of the Abbey.* After mentioning the' founding of the Cathedral within the city, he goes on "He(i.e.,Augustine) alsobuiltamonasterynotfarfrom the' city to the eastward, in which by his advice Ethelbert erected from the foundation the church of the blessed Apostles Peter and Paul; and enriched it with several donations: wherein the bodies of the same Augustine and of all the bishops of Canterbury and of the Kings of Icent might be buried." The foundation of the monastery, according to the Augustinian Ohronicle, was begun in 598, though the church was. not completed at the death of St; Augustine in 605. It was consecrated, according to Bede, by Augustine's successor, Laurence. Its distinct function as the home of the monks and the royal and episcopal burial-place is described at some length by Gotselin,t the monk who lived.

    ORIGIN AND EARLY HISTORY OF DOUBLE MONASTERIES. BY MISS MARY BATESON I.—INQUIRY CONCERNING THE EARLIEST EXAMPLES M. VARIN'S learned monograph ' at present stands alone as an attempt to ascertain the origin of the double monastery, or monastery for men and women. He deals with the subject incidentally as part of a thesis on the points at issue between the Breton and Roman Church, and he handles his whole theme controversially. In spite of this fact, his argument on the subject of double monasteries has met with general acceptance, for example, from Montalembert,2 Ozanam,3 Haddan,4 Professor Mayor,5 and M. Maurice Prou.6 M. Varin seeks to prove that St. Rhadegund's foundation at Poitiers was the first example of this form of organisation among the Western nations of the Continent, and that its origin is directly traceable to Irish influences. It is the object of this essay to suggest a different conclusion, to collect the evidence on the subject from the scattered sources where alone it is at present accessible, and incidentally to criticise the arguments adduced by M. Varin. It is imperative in the first place to establish a definition of the half-technical term' double monastery.' Dyson PhD University of York History March 2016 3 Abstract This thesis is an examination and analysis of the books needed by and available to Anglo-Saxon priests for the provision of pastoral care in the tenth and eleventh centuries. Anglo-Saxon priests are a group that has not previously been studied as such due to the scattered and difficult nature of the evidence. By synthesizing previous scholarly work on the secular clergy, pastoral care, and priests’ books, this thesis aims to demonstrate how priestly manuscripts can be used to inform our understanding of the practice of pastoral care in Anglo-Saxon England. In the first section of this thesis (Chapters 2–4), I will discuss the context of priestly ministry in England in the tenth and eleventh centuries before arguing that the availability of a certain set of pastoral texts prescribed for priests by early medieval bishops was vital to the provision of pastoral care. Additionally, I assert that Anglo- Saxon priests in general had access to the necessary books through means such as episcopal provision and aristocratic patronage and were sufficiently literate to use these texts. The second section (Chapters 5–7) is divided according to different types of priestly texts and through both documentary evidence and case studies of specific manuscripts, I contend that the analysis of individual priests’ books clarifies our view of pastoral provision and that these books are under-utilized resources in scholars’ attempts to better understand contemporary pastoral care.

  • The Earliest Life of St Dunstan
    The Earliest Life of St Dunstan Michael Winterbottom Dunstan, the most important of the tenth-century reformers of the English church, was bom near Glastonbury in Somerset. In 940 he became abbot of the local monastery. After exile under King Eadwig, he was favoured by King Edgar, and was successively bishop of Worcester and of London, be­ fore becoming archbishop of Canterbury in 960. He died in 988. Much of the material concerning him is collected by William Stubbs in his Memorials o f Saint Dunstan (Rolls Series 63 [1874]). It includes a series of Lives, the ear­ liest of which is the topic of the present article (Stubbs, 3-52). This is dedi­ cated to a slightly later archbishop, Ælfric, who held office from 995 to 1005. The author describes himself as ‘omnium extimus sacerdotum B. uilisque Saxonum indigena’. It has been cogently argued by Michael Lapidge1 that ‘B.’ was an Englishman, trained at Glastonbury, who was in Dunstan’s retinue until moving to Liège around 960 and eventually dying there. It is certainly true that the author tells us little or nothing of the events of Dunstan’s archbishopric: a topic to which I shall return in the second part of this paper.
