DIAKONOFF). — Korte mededeling (p. 124: Personalia).

OPEN Wide-ranging barcoding aids discovery SUBJECT AREAS: of one-third increase of species richness TAXONOMY SYSTEMATICS in presumably well-investigated moths MOLECULAR EVOLUTION Marko Mutanen1, Lauri Kaila2 & Jukka Tabell3 PHYLOGENETICS 1Biodiversity Unit, Department of Biology, PO Box 3000, University of Oulu, Finland, 2Finnish Museum of Natural History, Zoology 3 Received Unit, PO Box 17, University of Helsinki, Finland, Laaksotie 28, FI-19600 Hartola, Finland. 3 July 2013 Accepted Rapid development of broad regional and international DNA barcode libraries have brought new insights 19 September 2013 into the species diversity of many areas and groups. Many new species, even within well-investigated species groups, have been discovered based initially on differences in DNA barcodes. We barcoded 437 collection Published specimens belonging to 40 pre-identified Palearctic species of the Elachista bifasciella group of moths 9 October 2013 (Lepidoptera, Elachistidae). Although the study group has been a subject of several careful morphological taxonomic examinations, an unexpectedly high number of previously undetected putative species is revealed, resulting in a 34% rise in species number in the study area. The validity of putative new species was subsequently supported with diagnostic morphological traits. We show that DNA barcodes provide a Correspondence and powerful method of detecting potential new species even in taxonomic groups and geographic areas that requests for materials have previously been under considerable morphological taxonomic scrutiny. should be addressed to M.M. (marko. [email protected]) stimates of the number of species on Earth vary from 3 to 100 million, the most recent survey concluding that there are about 8.7 million (61.3 million SE) species based on a quantitative extrapolation of current taxonomic knowledge1.

LONDON, 1854. -4 ,<6 < LONDON : PRINTED BY EDWARD NEWMAN, 9, DEVONSHIRE ST., BISHOPSGATE. INTRODUCTION. The principal object of the present Catalogue has been to give a complete Hst of all the smaller Lepidopterous Insects that have been recorded as found in Great Britain, indicating at the same time those species that are contained in the Collection. This Catalogue has been prepared by H. T. STAiNTON^ sq., so well known for his works on British Micro-Lepidoptera, for the extent of his cabinet, and the hberahtj with which he allows it to be consulted. Mr. Stainton has endeavom-ed to arrange these insects ac- cording to theh natural affinities, so far as is practicable with a local collection ; and has taken great pains to ascertain every name which has been applied to the respective species and their varieties, the author of the same, and the date of pubhcation ; the references to such names as are unaccompanied by descrip- tions being included in parentheses : all are arranged chronolo- gically, excepting those to the illustrations and to the figures which invariably follow their authorities. The species in the British Museum Collection are indicated by the letters B. M., annexed. JOHN EDWARD GRAY. British Museum, May 2Qrd, 1854. CATALOGUE BRITISH MICRO-LEPIDOPTERA § III. Mitt.

Abstract Additions, deletions and corrections are made to the Irish checklist of butterflies and moths (Lepidoptera). Elachista biatomella (Stainton, 1848) is added to the Irish list. The total number of confirmed Irish species of Lepidoptera now stands at 1480. Key words: Lepidoptera, additions, deletions, corrections, Irish list, Elachista biatomella Introduction Bond, Nash and O’Connor (2006) provided a checklist of the Irish Lepidoptera. Since its publication, many new discoveries have been made and are reported here. In addition, several deletions have been made. A concise and updated checklist is provided. The following abbreviations are used in the text: BM(NH) – The Natural History Museum, London; NMINH – National Museum of Ireland, Natural History, Dublin. The total number of confirmed Irish species now stands at 1480, an addition of 68 since Bond et al. (2006). Taxonomic arrangement As a result of recent systematic research, it has been necessary to replace the arrangement familiar to British and Irish Lepidopterists by the Fauna Europaea [FE] system used by Karsholt 60 Bulletin of the Irish Biogeographical Society No. 36 (2012) and Razowski, which is widely used in continental Europe.

  • Zootaxa,A Taxonomic Revision of the Elachista Bedellella (Sircom
Zootaxa 1629: 1–25 (2007) ISSN 1175-5326 (print edition) www.mapress.com/zootaxa/ ZOOTAXA Copyright © 2007 · Magnolia Press ISSN 1175-5334 (online edition) A taxonomic revision of the Elachista bedellella (Sircom) complex (Lepidoptera: Elachistidae: Elachistinae) LAURI KAILA Finnish Museum of Natural History, Zoological Museum, P.O.Box 17, FI-00014 University of Helsinki, Finland. E-mail: [email protected] Abstract The Elachista bedellella Sircom complex is diagnosed and its taxonomy is revised. The female genitalia, when known, are found to be of good diagnostic value in defining species. In the male genitalia there are subtle, yet decipherable inter- specific differences in the shape of the juxta and the cornutus that correlate with differences in the outer appearance of different populations. As a result, eight species are recognised, including the following new species: Elachista antonia sp. n. from Greece (Crete), E. slivenica sp. n. from Bulgaria, E. dorinda sp. n. from Turkey, E. versicolora sp. n. from Russia (Transbaikalia) and E. camilla sp. n. from Russia (Kuray). The identity of E. lugdunensis Frey is clarified and it is considered a valid species, and E. coeneni Traugott-Olsen, 1985 is confirmed to be a junior synonym of it. E. bedellella, E. lugdunensis and E. titanella Kaila & Jalava, 1994 (stat. n.) are diagnosed and illustrated. It is characterised by broad forewings with brownish grey ground colour in which there are two pale markings: a transverse fascia in the middle of the wing, and triangular costal and tornal spots confluent to each other forming another medially outward angled fascia in outer two thirds of the wing.

  • Interesting Species of the Family Geometridae (Lepidoptera) Recently Collected in Serbia, Including Some That Are New to the Country’S Fauna
Acta entomologica serbica, 2018, 23(2): 27-41 UDC 595.768.1(497.11) DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.2547675 INTERESTING SPECIES OF THE FAMILY GEOMETRIDAE (LEPIDOPTERA) RECENTLY COLLECTED IN SERBIA, INCLUDING SOME THAT ARE NEW TO THE COUNTRY’S FAUNA ALEKSANDAR STOJANOVIĆ1, MIROSLAV JOVANOVIĆ1 and ČEDOMIR MARKOVIĆ2 1 Natural History Museum, Njegoševa 51, 11000 Belgrade, Serbia E-mails: [email protected]; [email protected] 2 University of Belgrade, Faculty of Forestry, Kneza Višeslava 1, 11030 Belgrade, Serbia E-mail: [email protected] (corresponding author) Abstract Seventeen very interesting species were found in studying the fauna of Geometridae of Serbia. Ten of them are new to the fauna of Serbia (Ennomos quercaria, Anticollix sparsata, Colostygia fitzi, Eupithecia absinthiata, E. alliaria, E. assimilate, E. millefoliata, E. semigraphata, Perizoma juracolaria and Trichopteryx polycommata); five are here recorded in Serbia for the second time (Dyscia raunaria, Elophos dilucidaria, Eupithecia ochridata, Perizoma bifaciata and Rhodostrophia discopunctata); and two are recorded for the third time (Nebula nebulata and Perizoma hydrata). Information regarding where and when they were all found is given herein. KEY WORDS: geometrid moths, measuring worms, new record, taxonomy Introduction With more than 23000 species, Geometridae is one of the largest families of the order Lepidoptera (Choi et al., 2017). About 900 species have been found to date in Europe (Hausmann, 2001). Some of them are significant pests in agriculture and forestry (Carter, 1984; Barbour, 1988; Glavendekić, 2002; Pernek et al., 2013). Around 380 species have so far been recorded in Serbia (Dodok, 2006; Djurić & Hric, 2013; Beshkov, 2015a, 2015b, 2015c, 2017a, 2017b; Beshkov & Nahirnić, 2017; Nahirnić & Beshkov, 2016).
