Deel 35 1 augustus 1975 No. 8 Adres van de Redactie: B. J. LEMPKE, Plantage Middenlaan 64, Amsterdam 1004 — Nederland INHOUD: B. J. LEMPKE, Notities over enkele soorten van Elachista (Lep., Elachisti- dae) (p. 105). — A. VAN FRANKENHUYZEN, Phyllonorycter corylifoliella (Hübner, 1793) (Lep., Gracillariidae) (p. 108). — FER WILLEMSE, Two new subspecies of Platycleis (Modestana) ebneri (Ramme, 1926) from Greece (Orthoptera, Ensifera, Dec- ticinae) (p. 118). — Literatuur (p. 124: A. DIAKONOFF). — Korte mededeling (p. 124: Personalia). Doch Zeller’s naam is ongeldig wegens homonimie! Pas in 1855 (vol. SUMMARY 1. An Elachîsîa species is known from the neighbourhood of Arnhem (prov. of Gelderland). It was first mentioned as E. cinctella, then as E. megerlella. Examination of the $ genitalia showed it to belong to E. adscitella Stainton. The true E. megerlella (Hübner) is not yet known from the Netherlands. 2. November 2007 Summary: 65species of Elachistidae are listed from the Volgo-Ural Region. 64 species are recorded from the region in addition to Eversmann ’s list. Introduction: This paper is the 14lh in a series of publications', dealing with the composition of the present-day fauna of the family Elachistidae in the Middle Volga and the south western Cisurals. This region comprises of the administrative divisions of Astrakhan-, Volgograd-, Saratov-, Samara-, Uljanovsk-, Orenburg-, Uralsk- and Atyraus-(=Gurjev) Districts, together with Tataria and Bashkiria. As was accepted in previous parts of this series, only material reliably labeled and spanning mostly the last 25-50 years was used for this study. The main collections are those of the authors: V. Anikin (Saratov and Astrakhan Distr. and Kalmyk. Republic), S. Sachkov (Samara Distr.) and V. Zolotuhin (Uljanovsk and Astrakhan Distr.). Whilst completing this list we also took advantage of the information from recent papers on this region (Sachkov , 1996; Sachkov et al., 1996; Zolotuhin , 2001; K aila et al., 2003). The material in the collections of the Zoological Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences (St. Petersburg) has also been examined for our study. In the text we follow more traditional system proposed by E. T raugott -O lsen and E.

Box 3000, FI-90014 University of Oulu, Finland; e-mail: [email protected] Abstract. The female external morphology of Elachista imatrella Schantz, 1971 is described based on a single female specimen lacking the abdomen. The male E. imatrella is redescribed on the basis of new material and compared with a close relative, E. cinereopunctella (Haworth, 1828). The species can be distinguished most reliably by the length and shape of the aedeagus. The wing pattern of E. imatrella is more distinct than presumed earlier. The habitat of E. imatrella is described and its possible life history discussed. Key words. Elachistidae, Elachista imatrella, Elachista cinereopunctella, taxonomy, morphology, redescription. Introduction Elachista imatrella Schantz, 1971 was described on the basis of three male specimens collected in the vicinity of Imatra, south-eastern Finland (Schantz 1971). Later, five additional, old, and unlabelled specimens were recorded from Norway (Traugott- Olsen & Schmidt Nielsen 1977). These were the only known records of this species until it was rediscovered in Finland in 1993 (Kaila & Kerppola 1995).

E-mail: 1 [email protected], 2 [email protected] *Corresponding author Abstract We compared DNA barcoding to “traditional” taxonomic tools in clarifying relationships in complexes of closely related, putative “species” of Elachistinae moths (Gelechioidea: Elachistidae) occurring in Australia. A 705 bp fragment of the 3’-end of cytochrome c oxidase subunit I gene (COI) was used. This mtDNA fragment did not differentiate between all species-level taxa that could be defined by morphological and/or ecological differences. Different evolutionary rates of COI among closely related lineages were observed. Although our findings are based on the variability of the 3’ end of the COI gene and not the 5’ end barcode fragment, we are convinced that thorough exploration of traditional morphology and ecology is a prerequisite for exploring insufficiently known taxonomies by the barcode approach. The sole use of COI barcoding, whether considering COI-5’ or COI-3’ fragment, may fail to recognize closely related species. Our results discourage this approach for delimitation of closely related species, but its use is encouraged as an additional tool for exploring little known taxonomies or as an identification tool for previously thoroughly studied species complexes.

  • The Smaller Moths of Staffordshire
The Smaller Moths of Staffordshire By R.G.Warren Staffordshire Biological Recording Scheme Publication No. 13 1988 ISBN 0 905080 77 7 ISSN 0309 2100 Preface It is 25 years since Richard Warren produced his Smaller Moths of Staffordshire and it is now long out-of-print. It is a monumental work whose small size belies the work involved in its production. Richard was "into" micros at a time few others were. His knowledge of the micros of the county was encyclopaedic which is remarkable when you consider that he did not drive and his main source of identification of the micros was Meyrick's Revised Handbook of British Lepidoptera which, as those of you familiar with it will know, contains no illustrations save a few showing wing venation! Later there was the 2 volume British Tortricoid Moths and the first volumes of the Handbook of Moths of Great Britain and Ireland but these still covered only a small part of the micro-lepidoptera. He made frequent visits to the British Museum where he would consult those legends of Lepidoptera; Aggasiz, Bradley, Heath, Pelham-Clinton, Tremewan and the like. Richard could not have foreseen the rapid growth in interest in Lepidoptera and particularly the sudden availability of identification literature, the on-line sources and digital photography, all of which have contributed to an interest in the Micro-lepidoptera. I thought it appropriate to make this work available as an historical reference and to work towards updating it over the coming year. Please note, however, that it retains the nomenclature that was extant at the time of its publication.

Japanese Elachista studied by Parenti (1983) (Lepidoptera, Elachistidae): the subgenus Aphelosetia and the gleichenella-, tetragonella-, and bifasciella-groups. – Tijdschrift voor Entomologie 148: 225-246, figs. 1-63. [ 0040-7496]. Published 1 December 2005. The Japanese Elachista Treitschke, 1833 species relevant to Parenti (1983) belonging to the subgenus Aphelosetia Stephens, 1834 and the gleichenella-, tetragonella-, and bifasciella-groups of the subgenus Elachista are revised. A total of nine species are recognized: E. (Aphelosetia) fasciola Parenti, 1983, E. (Aphelosetia) microdigitata Parenti, 1983, in the E. gleichenella-group: E. (E.) nitensella Sinev & Sruoga, 1995, E. (E.) similis sp. n., E. (E.) tengstromi Kaila et al., 2001, in the E. tetragonella-group: E. (E.) fulgens Parenti, 1983, and in the E. bifasciella-group: E. (E.) hiranoi sp. n., E. (E.) jupiter sp. n., and E. (E.) phalaridis Parenti, 1983. Elachista similis and E. hiranoi have been previously misidentified in Japan as E. gleichenella (Fabricius, 1781) and E. apicipunctella Stainton, 1858 respectively. Elachista jupiter is another close relative of E. apicipunctella. The females of E. microdigitata and E. nitensella are described for the first time. The immature biology is illustrated for E. similis and E. fulgens. Bidzilya, Yu. Budashkin & A. Zhakov Abstract An annotated list of 71 species of Elachistidae of Ukraine is given. One species Elachista laurii Bidzilya & Budashkin, sp. n. is described as new from the Eastern Ukraine (Luhansk region) and Volga area of Russia (Ulyanovsk, Saratov and Volgograd regions). Elachista purella Sruoga, 2000 is recorded from Europe for the first time and the hitherto unknown female of this species is illustrated. Eight species: Elachista grandella Traugott-Olsen, 1992, Elachista parvula Parenti, 1978, Elachista nitidulella (Herrich-Schäffer, 1855), Elachista spumella Caradja, 1920, Elachista heringi (Rebel, 1899), Elachista nolckeni Sˇulcs, 1992, Elachista littoricola Le Marchand, 1938 = Elachista volgella Lastukhin, 2009, syn. n., and Biselachista contaminatella (Zeller, 1847) = Biselachista arzamastsevi Lastukhin, 2009, syn. n., are recorded from the Ukraine for the first time.

(Lepidoptera, Elachisti- dae: Elachistinae), a new species from southern Finland. — Entomol. Fennica 21: 129–138. Elachista (Elachista) saarelai sp. n. is described on the basis of specimens reared from larvae in southern Finland. The new species belongs to the Elachista tetra- gonella group, and is a close relative of E. trapeziella Stainton, E. ornithopodella Frey, E. occidentalis Frey and E. kebneella Traugott-Olsen & Schmidt Nielsen. It differs from all these species by details in morphology and life history. The new species inhabits sheltered habitats. Carex digitata and probably also and C. pediformis are recorded as its host plants. Diagnostic characters and illustrations are provided for the close relatives of E. saarelai sp. n. L.
