Pan

Tape together different sized straws and blow in to them at an angle to create a whistling sound!

Xylophone

Fill glasses with different amounts of water and gently tap the rim with a spoon to make different ringing sounds – can you create a tune? Be very careful not to break the glass!

Drums

You can create a from almost any item! Try using empty tin cans, covering the top with an unused balloon and secure the balloon with an elastic (see the picture). All you need is a wooden item to tap them with. If you don’t have these items you could try using upside down pots and pans or even tapping a table top can create a drum sound!

Digeridoo

You can make an Australian digeridoo out of tubes of toilet roll or kitchen roll stuck together and blowing/making sounds in to the top. You could even decorate your digeridoo with aboriginal symbols!

Tambourine

You can make a at home using a paper plate, some wool or string and jingle (there may be some left over from Christmas wrapping or chocolates!). Create holes around the edges of the paper plate with a hole punch and thread the wool/string through, adding jingle bells in place as you go (see picture). Finish your instrument by drawing designs on it with pencils or markers!

Rainstick

You can make a rainstick using toilet roll or kitchen roll tubes stuck together. Seal off one edge using sellotape or cover with paper and an elastic band to secure. Fill with grains of rice or small pasta pieces then seal the other side. Decorate by covering in coloured paper or drawing patterns and tie ribbon or paper to both ends. Now shake your stick back and forth and it should sound like a rain storm!

Banjo

You can create a banjo by sticking or stapling two paper plates together, decorate them as you wish, then gather three different sized elastic bands and wrap around the plates. Glue a flat piece of wood or thick card to the back to hold.
