' 'c t ** ••« ••» NORU OOD'MAfS'U-S-A FOREWORD 1 HIS volume has been prepared primarily for the Society of Sponsors of the United States Navy, to bring together from widely scattered and inaccessible sources all obtainable facts relating to the naming of the fighting craft of our Navy — old and new — and the bestowing of the names upon these vessels by sponsors. There is a widespread public interest in these subjects and no ready means of information. Records of Navy namings, launchings, or christen- ings have been preserved nowhere in book form. Laborious research has been necessary to collect and verify fragmentary data. To discover exact dates of launchings, records of christenings, and to verify the names of sponsors, it has been necessary to search Navy Department records, histories of Navy Yards, histories of cities, numberless old newspaper files and periodicals of a number of cities, and to correspond with a very large number of individuals. Complete biographies of individuals or complete histories of vessels are manifestly impossible in this volume. Biographical notes of patriots for whom Navy vessels have been named are not given as com- plete biographies. Historical notes of vessels are not given as complete histories. Conspicuous facts of biographies and of histories are set forth for the pur- pose of interesting and unmistakable identification, and for the inspiration of every reader with patriotic pride in the achievements of our Navy. [iii] FOREWORD Full accounts of all launchings would be repetition. Accounts typical of different periods and localities have been selected without regard to class of vessel. Records in this volume, with the exception of some of the very old ships, have been submitted to sponsors or to their representatives. "Wyoming" 202 [ viii ] LAUxNCHING OF A BATTLESHIP AND LAUNCHING STAND V BESTOWING THE NAME 1 HE launching of a Navy ship is an engineering feat of great magnitude, usually so successfully per- formed that the spectator thrills with enthusiasm entirely devoid of anxiety. Each succeeding fighting ship becomes larger and heavier, and careful calcula- tion must be worked out bearing directly upon the launching even before a single rivet has been driven. It is the usual custom in launching naval vessels to send them into the water stern first, the fuller form of the hull aft tending to make the vessel rise more quickly from her first plunge than would be the case were she sent into the water bow first, and it also makes the pivotal strain less at that instant when the bow on entering the water and the stern upon rising throw the burden of weight upon the forward poppets or timber shores. In the earlier years of our Navy the name of a United States Navy ship was usually bestowed by an officer of the Navy. The naming party went on board to be launched with the ship, and the sponsor broke a bottle of wine or water over the bow of the vessel and pronounced the name at the moment that the bow struck the water. The ceremony of bestowing the name has always been a civil ceremony and without intent of religious significance. [ix] BESTOWING THE NAME Examined records give only one instance of religious ceremony in connection with the launch of a United States Navy ship. Prayer, offered by a clergyman, preceded the civil ceremony of launching and naming "Princeton" (ist). Early records of naming ceremonies are not com- plete owing to destruction of old records, and to lack of newspaper space or enterprise, for the records dis- covered show that Navy launchings were occasions of great public interest and enthusiasm, and were attended by large numbers of people. Many promi- nent officials were present and were launched with the ship. Commodore John Paul Jones was aboard the "America," the first ship of the line launched in America, and in several instances the Secretary of the Navy has been launched with a Navy ship. The "America," built in 1782, was presented to the French Government. The first record of a United States Navy naming or "christening" is that of the "Constitution," October 20, 1797, on which occasion Captain James Sever, U. S. Navy, "broke a bottle of wine over the bow of the frigate." When the frigate "Independence" was launched, June 20, 18 14, "an ofllicer of the 'Consti- tution' (Commodore Bainbridge) had the honor of christening her as she struck the water." The frigate " Brandywine," in 1825, "smote the water in fine style and Captain Dove stationed on her bow christened her with the usual ceremony." In 1828 the first woman sponsor appears in print, but her identity may be forever shrouded in the mys- tery of the words: "The 'Concord' glided beautifully into her destined element and was christened by a young lady of Portsmouth." (Preble's History of the -J < z < A \ BESTOWING THE NAME Portsmouth Navy Yard.) In those days it was not the fashion to put the names of ladies in the papers. From that date up to the present time examined records give the names of few men who have partici- pated in the naming of United States Navy ships. *' The ships were: the Pennsylvania" in 1837; the "Dale" in 1839; the "Princeton" (ist) and the frig- ate "Raritan" in 1843; the "San Jacinto" in 1850; the "New Ironsides" in 1862; the **Miantonomah" in 1863; the "Quinnebaug" in 1866; the "Mackenzie" in 1901.

    The 2014 George C. Marshall Lecture in Military History The Rewards of Risk-Taking: Two Civil War Admirals* James M. McPherson Abstract The willingness to take risks made Rear Admiral David Glasgow Far- ragut, victor at New Orleans in 1862 and Mobile Bay in 1864, the Union’s leading naval commander in the Civil War. Farragut’s boldness contrasted strongly with the lack of decisiveness shown in the failure in April 1863 to seize the port of Charleston, South Carolina, by Rear Admiral Samuel Francis Du Pont, whose capture of Port Royal Sound in South Carolina in November of 1861 had made him the North’s first naval hero of the war. Du Pont’s indecisiveness at Charleston led to his removal from command and a blighted career, while the risk-taking Farragut went on to become, along with generals U.S. Grant and Wil- liam T. Early Days in the Navy During these at present, as I write this, excoriating months of summer, I am taking a break from my more usual studies to brush up on my immediate familiarity with the history of the post-Revolutionary War United States Navy. Among the volumes I’ve thus far, or else mostly, finished are Stephen W.H. Duffy’s Captain Blakeley and the Wasp: The Cruise of 1814, and A Gentlemanly and Honorable Profession: The Creation of the U.S. Naval Officer Corps, 1794-1815 by Christopher McKee -- both veritable classics of their kind. Duffy’s biography of Master Commandant Johnston Blakeley is singularly splendid. Here’s some first-rate research and accompanied by descriptions of naval actions that could hold their own in drama and excitement with some of the masters of nautical fiction; by an author who knows the technical niceties of sea faring and survival in an early 19th century sailing ship breasting the ocean in time of war. As well, the book ends up being surprisingly moving: Blakeley, having lost his entire (immediate) family at a young age, makes his way up the ladder in the nascent U.S. navy, encountering daunting and trying challenges along the way; finds time to get married; finally sets sail after a protracted and tedious fitting out of his new vessel and command; wins two incredible and stunning battles; only to shortly after be mysteriously lost at sea with his victorious ship and men.1 While Duffy’s facts and data could be shored up at points and be profitably served by further analysis, exploration and development of what he presents (including perhaps philosophical-artistic development), this shortcoming can be pardoned given what a magnificent job he’s done gathering up the requisite materials.

    The Cape Fear Civil War Round Table John Taylor Wood: Man of Action, Man of Honor By Tim Winstead History 454 December 4, 2009 On July 20, 1904, a short obituary note appeared on page seven of the New York Times. It simply stated, "Captain John Taylor Wood, grandson of President Zachary Taylor and nephew of Jefferson Davis, died in Halifax, N.S. yesterday, seventy-four years old." The note also stated that Wood served as a United States Navy midshipman, fought in the Mexican War, served as a Confederate army colonel on the staff of Jefferson Davis and Robert E. Lee's army, escaped the collapse of the Confederacy with General Breckinridge to Cuba, and was a resident of Halifax, Nova Scotia when he passed. In one paragraph, the obituary writer prepared the outline of the life of a man who participated in many of the major events of the American Civil War. John Taylor Wood's story was much more expansive and interwoven with the people and history of the Civil War era than the one paragraph credited to him by the Times. This paper examined the events in which Wood found himself immersed and sought to determine his role in those events. The main focus of the paper was Wood's exploits during his service to the Confederate States of America. His unique relationships with the leadership of the Confederacy ensured that he was close at hand when decisions were made which affected the outcome of the South's gamble for independence. Was John Taylor Wood the Forrest Gump of his day? Was it mere chance that Wood was at Hampton Roads on March 9, 1862, at Drewry's Bluff on May 15, 1862, abroad the USS Satellite in August 1863, aboard the USS Underwriter at New Berne in February 1864, abroad the CSS Tallahassee in August 1864, or with Jefferson Davis on the "unfortunate day" in Georgia on May 10, 1865? Was it only his relationship with Jefferson Davis that saw Wood engaged in these varied events? This paper examined these questions and sought to establish that it was Wood's competence and daring that placed him at the aforementioned actions and not Jefferson Davis's nepotism.

Monitor Nils William Olsson Recent reports in the nation's media have carried the news of the suc­ cessful recovery of the anchor of the U.S.S. Monitor, the iron-clad which successfully bested the Confederate ironclad Merrimack at the Battle of Hampton Roads, VA on March 9, 1862. The Monitor, designed by the famous Swedish-born inventor, John Ericsson, was completed in a record 100 days at Greenpoint, Long Island as a counter measure to the rising might of the Confederate Navy. The vessel sank off Cape Hatteras, NC in a storm Dec. 31, 1862, while being towed to Beaufort, NC, to join the blockade of the Confederacy. Since the day of its loss, it had been the subject of much speculation, as to its whereabouts. Ten years ago the Monitor was located, lying on the ocean floor near the Cape.

    “MANY OF THEM ARE AMONG MY BEST MEN”: THE UNITED STATES NAVY LOOKS AT ITS AFRICAN AMERICAN CREWMEN, 1755-1955 by MICHAEL SHAWN DAVIS B.A., Brooklyn College, City University of New York, 1991 M.A., Kansas State University, 1995 AN ABSTRACT OF A DISSERTATION submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Department of History College of Arts and Sciences KANSAS STATE UNIVERSITY Manhattan, Kansas 2011 Abstract Historians of the integration of the American military and African American military participation have argued that the post-World War II period was the critical period for the integration of the U.S. Navy. This dissertation argues that World War II was “the” critical period for the integration of the Navy because, in addition to forcing the Navy to change its racial policy, the war altered the Navy’s attitudes towards its African American personnel. African Americans have a long history in the U.S. Navy. In the period between the French and Indian War and the Civil War, African Americans served in the Navy because whites would not. This is especially true of the peacetime service, where conditions, pay, and discipline dissuaded most whites from enlisting. During the Civil War, a substantial number of escaped slaves and other African Americans served. Reliance on racially integrated crews survived beyond the Civil War and the abolition of slavery, only to succumb to the principle of “separate but equal,” validated by the Supreme Court in the Plessy case (1896). As racial segregation took hold and the era of “Jim Crow” began, the Navy separated the races, a task completed by the time America entered World War I.
