ABSTRACT THE SPIRITUAL DYNAMIC IN ALCOHOLICS ANONYMOUS AND THE FACTORS PRECIPITATING A.A.’S SEPARATION FROM THE OXFORD GROUP by Andrew D. Feldheim Alcoholics Anonymous has grown since the mid-1930’s from a loose cohesion of individuals seeking recovery to iconic status as a paradigmatic self-help organization. Few people among the many familiar with A.A. are aware of its genesis from a popular Christian evangelical organization called the Oxford Group. This paper charts the course of A.A. from its Oxford Group roots, both in terms of historical development and the evolution of the spiritual dynamic that served as the functional nexus for both organizations. This paper also addresses key differences in the agendas of both groups that eventually necessitated their separation, as well as the questionable assumption that Alcoholics Anonymous is the more “secular” of the two. I We all know how this act of lighting the match— you can’t when everything goes as planned—can help you accomplish your objectives. But, unfortunately, once you’ve put that fire on take it back. the ground, you-know-what can also happen. Last season, on seven firing operations—including prescribed fires and wildfires (let’s face it, your drip torch doesn’t know the difference)—things did not go as planned. Firefighters scrambled for safety zones. Firefighters were entrapped. Firefighters got burned. It might serve us well to listen to the firing operation lessons that our fellow firefighters learned in 2011. As we already know, these firing show mishaps—plans gone awry—aren’t choosey about fuel type or geographic area. Last year, these incidents occurred from Arizona to Georgia to South Dakota—basically, all over the map. In Arkansas, on the mid-September Rock Creek Prescribed Fire, that universal theme about your drip torch never distinguishing between a wildfire or prescribed fire is truly hammered home. Here’s what happened: A change in wind speed dramatically increases fire activity. Jackpots of fuel exhibit extreme fire behavior and torching of individual trees. -

"That is, people say he died, but he really didn't," wrote Bill Wilson. "His spirit and works are today alive in the hearts of uncounted AA's, and who can doubt that Bill already dwells in one of those many mansions in the great beyond." Bill Dotson, the "Man on the Bed," was AA number 3. At his death, he had not had a drink in more than nineteen years. His date of so- briety was the date he entered Akron's City Hospital for his last detox, June 26, 1935. Two days later occurred that fateful day when two sober alcoholics visited him: Dr. Bob Smith of Akron, Ohio, and Bill Wilson, a guest of Dr. Bob's from New York. A few days before, Dr. Bob had said to Bill: "If you and I are going to stay sober, we had better get busy." Dr. Bob called Akron's City Hospital and told the nurse, a "Mrs. Hall," that he and a man from New York had a cure for alcoholism. -

The What Works Clearinghouse (WWC) develops practice guides in conjunction with an expert panel, combining the panel’s expertise with the findings of existing rigorous research to produce spe- cific recommendations for addressing these challenges. The WWC and the panel rate the strength of the research evidence supporting each of their recommendations. See Appendix A for a full description of practice guides. The goal of this practice guide is to offer educators specific, evidence-based recommendations that address the challenges of teaching algebra to students in grades 6 through 12. This guide synthesizes the best available research and shares practices that are supported by evidence. It is intended to be practical and easy for teachers to use. The guide includes many examples in each recommendation to demonstrate the concepts discussed. Practice guides published by IES are available on the What Works Clearinghouse website at http://whatworks.ed.gov. How to use this guide This guide provides educators with instructional recommendations that can be implemented in conjunction with existing standards or curricula and does not recommend a particular curriculum. A.A. Timeline with Significant Rochester Events 1879 August 8: Robert Holbrook Smith (Dr. Bob) born in St. Johnsbury, Vermont 1895 November 26: William Griffith Wilson born in East Dorset, Vermont. The house behind the trees in this photo is the Wilson House where Bill was born in a room behind the bar 1917 Bill called up by Army; has first drunk. It was a Bronx Cocktail made up of gin, dry and sweet vermouth and orange juice. Bill passed out, threw up and was miserably sick the next day. He wrote to Lois that he loved the experience with alcohol Young Bill in Uniform 1925 Bill starts work as securities analyst; drinking worsens 1929 Stock market crashes, and so does Bill 1930 Dr. Jung pronounces Rowland H. medically hopeless and suggests he find a spiritual experience. Singing sensation Claire Richards tells all… Submitted by: Bray Leino Wednesday, 13 January 2010 From warbling classics in the shower to booming out the latest track whilst at the wheel on the M4, never before have so many Brits had aspirations to become singers. With The X-Factor inspiring a whopping 12 million people to audition – twice the number of people living in London - and home karaoke games such as Sing Star and Rock Band selling out at Christmas, it seems everyone wants to get in on the act. But how should all our aspiring singers take the best care of their voices and give themselves the best possible shot at fame – whether on stage or in your living room? Jakemans (http://www.jakemans.com), the soothing menthol cough sweet popular with professional singers, has teamed up with Steps star Claire Richards to provide some tips on how to enhance the singing voices that Mother Nature gave us. With a string of hit singles including ‘5,6,7,8’, ‘Tragedy’ and ‘Last Thing On My Mind’, Claire was a key member of the pop quintet and is keen to continue her singing career after her second child is born later this year. Her top tips for aspiring performers everywhere include: 1.Wherever possible, avoid alcohol, especially before singing 2.Swap your usual cuppa for a herbal tea or hot honey and lemon 3.Make sure you warm up your voice properly 4.Steam your throat regularly by breathing in hot water vapours 5.Sip warm or tepid water rather than cold 6.Suck Jakemans before performing, the menthol vapors lubricate the vocal cords 7.Don’t gargle if you have a sore throat – it’s a myth 8.If you have a cold, try and clear your throat gently rather than big strong coughs 9.Avoid throat sprays that numb the throat, they’ll give you a false sense of security and damage your vocal cords more 10.Finally, try and rest your voice whenever you can, particularly before singing.
