Development of the Global Film Industry The global film industry has witnessed significant transformations in the past few years. Regions outside the USA have begun to prosper while non-traditional produc- tion companies such as Netflix have assumed a larger market share and online movies adapted from literature have continued to gain in popularity. How have these trends shaped the global film industry? This book answers this question by analyzing an increasingly globalized business through a global lens. Development of the Global Film Industry examines the recent history and current state of the business in all parts of the world. While many existing studies focus on the internal workings of the industry, such as production, distribution and screening, this study takes a “big picture” view, encompassing the transnational integration of the cultural and entertainment industry as a whole, and pays more attention to the coordinated develop- ment of the film industry in the light of influence from literature, television, animation, games and other sectors. This volume is a critical reference for students, scholars and the public to help them understand the major trends facing the global film industry in today’s world. Qiao Li is Associate Professor at Taylor’s University, Selangor, Malaysia, and Visiting Professor at the Université Paris 1 Panthéon- Sorbonne. He has a PhD in Film Studies from the University of Gloucestershire, UK, with expertise in Chinese- language cinema. He is a PhD supervisor, a film festival jury member, and an enthusiast of digital filmmaking with award- winning short films. He is the editor ofMigration and Memory: Arts and Cinemas of the Chinese Diaspora (Maison des Sciences et de l’Homme du Pacifique, 2019). -

PRODUCTION NOTES Set in a small Chinese village where an illicit blood trade has spread AIDS to the community, LOVE FOR LIFE is the story of De Yi and Qin Qin, two victims faced with the grim reality of impending death, who unexpectedly fall in love and risk everything to pursue a last chance at happiness before it’s too late. SYNOPSIS In a small Chinese village where an illicit blood trade has spread AIDS to the community, the Zhao’s are a family caught in the middle. Qi Quan is the savvy elder son who first lured neighbors to give blood with promises of fast money while Grandpa, desperate to make amends for the damage caused by his family, turns the local school into a home where he can care for the sick. Among the patients is his second son De Yi, who confronts impending death with anger and recklessness. At the school, De Yi meets the beautiful Qin Qin, the new wife of his cousin and a recent victim of the virus. Emotionally deserted by their respective spouses, De Yi and Qin Qin are drawn to each other by the shared disappointment and fear of their fate. With nothing to look forward to, De Yi capriciously suggests becoming lovers but as they begin their secret affair, they are unprepared for the real love that grows between them. De Yi and Qin Qin’s dream of being together as man and wife, to love each other legitimately and freely, is jeopardized when the villagers discover their adultery. With their time slipping away, they must decide if they will surrender everything to pursue one chance at happiness before it’s too late. -

DOI: 10.308161ICONN412017166 Conceptual sphere of modern cinema (a study of headline complexes of 21st - century European and Asian movies) Elena Gudeleva, Ekaterina Sudarkina Vladimir State University, Russia Abstract: This article aims to reveal the conceptual sphere of modern cinema dis- course in Europe and Asia by analyzing movie headline complexes. More than two thousand original movie titles and slogans of 21st-century films presented at the largest festivals are studied. The main concepts man( , opposition, love, house and nature) are pointed out and explained. In addition to the detailed theoretical commentary, the paper shows how the cinema headline complex con- centrates intertextual and non-textual associations, and carries information about authors’ intentions and tastes of moviegoers who are the target audience for the interpreter. Keywords: headline complex, concept, cinema discourse, translation, linguocul- tural analysis Introduction The headline complex (all the elements of the frame text grouped around a work’s title)1 takes on such functions as nominative, evaluative and expressive, infor- mative, and advertising. It is aimed at helping people navigate in a large stream of data in a more flexible manner. The linguistic base in cinematography is a relatively new and regularly expanded section of onomastics. In Western science cinematographic names and other non-textual elements are studied within the terminological framework of the paratext theory formulated in the 1980s by Gerard Genette and several other research- ers (Robert Stam; Nicole Janin-Foucher) and also within the framing theory suggested by Erving Goffman Frame( Analysis, 1974) and Werner Wolf with the contributors to his anthology (2006), who have tried to apply it to media. -

As film critic after film critic stumbled over Screenwriter’s Monthly can be found themselves to call his performance everything from "original" to at the following fine locations: "eccentric," they forgot one thing: the screenwriters, Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio, who did one heck of a job creating Sparrow on paper first. Sure, some critics mentioned the writers when they declared the film "cliché" and attacked it. Since the previous Walt Disney Los Angeles film based on one of its theme park attractions was the unbear- able The Country Bears, Pirates of the Caribbean is surprisingly Above The Fold 370 N. Fairfax Ave. Los Angeles, CA 90036 entertaining. But let’s face it. This wasn't intended to be serious (323) 935-8525 filmmaking. Not much is anymore in Hollywood. But maybe if we turn our backs to Hollywood’s fast food service, they will serve us something different. -

MEDIA FACTSHEET (15 Mar 2013) Singapore unveils 320 hours of comedies, entertainment programmes and documentaries at Hong Kong International Film & TV Market (FILMART) The Media Development Authority of Singapore (MDA) will lead 37 Singapore media companies to the 17th edition of the Hong Kong International Film & TV Market (FILMART) where they will meet with producers, distributors and investors to promote their content, negotiate deals and network with key industry players from 18 to 21 March 2013. More than 320 hours of locally-produced content including films and TV programmes will be showcased at the 90-square-metre Singapore Pavilion at the Hong Kong Convention & Exhibition Centre (booth 1A-D01, Hong Kong Convention & Exhibition Centre Level 1, Hall 1A). The content line-up includes recent locally-released film comedies Ah Boys to Men and Ah Boys to Men 2, about recruits in the Singapore military directed by prolific Singapore director Jack Neo; Taxi! Taxi!, inspired by a true story of a retrenched microbiology scientist who turns to taxi driving; Red Numbers by first-time director Dominic Ow about a guy who has three lucky minutes in his miserable life according to a Chinese geomancer; and The Wedding Diary II, the sequel to The Wedding Diary, which depicts life after marriage.
