    FOCUSED ETHNOGRAPHIC BIBLIOGRAPHY: STANDARD CROSS-CULTURAL SAMPLE Douglas R. White* This bibliography consists, for each society in the Standard Sample, of (1) the sources cited by each of the major studies that contributed extensive sets of coded ethnographic variables; (2) any new sources that have been published or become available or known to the author since the original "pinpointing" sheets were prepared; and (3) citations to all of the above sources that are contained, as of 1988, in the Human Relations Area Files (1976, updated 1985, 1988). Publication of the bibliography of ethnographic sources for the Standard Cross-Cultural Sample (Murdock and White 1969) marks a new phase in the development of professional access to the cross- cultural data base. This phase builds on George Peter Murdock’s lifelong work of assessing the quality of ethnographic descriptions, coding the ethnographic variables for his extensive EthnographicAtlas (Murdock 1967), and classifying these societies in terms of cultural similarities. From 1967 to 1969, he and I assessed several thousand candidate societies, in order to pick the best-described societies in each of 186 world cultural provinces and to choose the earliest date of high-quality description for each, so as to construct a representative world sample of high-quality ethnographies for comparative analysis. Each society was pinpointed to a particular community or locale, in addition to a focal date, to which the description applied. In the Human Relations Area Files ( H RAF), the full text passages pertaining to a particular society may describe more than one locality and more than one focal date, which can allow the researcher to make intra- cultural and historical comparisons.

    ELISABETH VERHOEVEN (B REMEN ) Cabécar – a Chibchan language of Costa Rica Abstract This article presents an overview of Cabécar, an indigenous language of Costa Rica spoken in the Talamanca Mountain Range. The language is endangered in that many young ethnic Cabécars exclu- sively speak Spanish. From a linguistic point of view, Cabécar possesses a number of outstanding characteristics, which are the subject of this article. 1. Introduction: The language and its speakers 1 Cabécar is the name of a language spoken by an indigenous population living in the Talamanca mountain range of Costa Rica. More recent statements regarding the number of speakers vary to a considerable degree: while Margery Peña (1985a: 131, 1991: 121, 1989/2003: xi) mentions between 2000 and 3000 speakers, Lewis (ed.) 2009 reports the number of 8840 speakers in the year 2000. The official census from the year 2000 men- tions 9861 ethnic Cabécars of which approximately 85% identify themselves as speak- ing the language (Solano 2002). There are four enclaves in the Talamanca mountain range of Costa Rica where Cabé- car is spoken: Chirripó, La Estrella, and San José Cabécar, all three located at the Atlan- tic side of the mountain range in the province of Limón, and Ujarrás, located at the Pacific side of the mountain range in the province of Puntarenas (Margery Peña 1991: 121, 1989/2003: xi, see Figure 1). In general people of these four regions do not have much contact to each other so that the varieties of the language spoken may differ to a considerable degree.     Culture as Commodity: Harmonizing Dichotomies March, 2012 MADELINE DEL TORO CHERNEY ABSTRACT This paper explores the creative use of culture as a commodity that enhances international cultural diplomacy as well as ensures cultural continuity within the economic world market. This study is based on my interactions with the Bribri people of Costa Rica and my analysis of their cultural and economic livelihood in a globalized world. Culture as Commodity: Harmonizing Dichotomies Madeline del Toro Cherney “The private property of the worker in his means of production is the foundation of small-scale industry, and small-scale industry is a necessary condition for the development of social production and of free individuality of the worker himself.” Karl Marx, Capital: Volume 1, 1867. The economic world-market has become the standard of living globally. Its effects filter into political and cultural international dynamics. Considering the current interface between economy and culture in the globalized world this paper considers the role of culture as a commodity. I explore a small Indigenous community in Latin America, the Bribri of Costa Rica, who negotiate their economic, cultural and environmental survival through the use of an international diplomatic ethic. The Bribri ‘diplomatically’ negotiate between tradition and modernity anchored within a capitalist model. For the Bribri, culture becomes a mode of production in which the laborer directly benefits from its exchange-value. As a small Indigenous community living against all odds, Bribri incorporation of a capital ethos is a form of cultural resistance though diplomacy. The Bribri operate grassroots eco-tourism enterprises within the Indian Reserve highlighting their cultural traditions.

Wainwright Copyright by David Matthew Lansing 2009 Abstract In this dissertation I present an analysis of the practices of calculation needed to create carbon forestry offsets in Costa Rica, with special attention to the spaces that are produced through such practices. Carbon forestry offsets are a mechanism by which a person, nation, or corporation can offset the climactic impact of their greenhouse gas emissions by purchasing a credit, which funds a forestry project that sequesters an equivalent amount of carbon. To produce such an offset, a significant amount of scientific and technical work is required to render the spaces of a forest as a carbon equivalent, and I explore the function and effects of this work in a variety of ways. First, I examine the relation between calculation and space in the production of offsets, where I argue that the calculations needed to bring a carbon forestry offset into being as a commodity is a process that results in the co-constitution of relational space, absolute Cartesian spaces, and the bounded territory of the nation-state. I develop this argument by drawing on Martin Heidegger’s writings on calculation, technology, and the question of being, and examine the spaces that result from an example of the state’s efforts to develop carbon offset calculations in Costa Rica.

  • Indigenous Languages in Costa Rica: the Case of Boruca
    INDIGENOUS LANGUAGES IN COSTA RICA: THE CASE OF BORUCA Damaris Castro García Universidad Nacional, Costa Rica ABSTRACT The number of indigenous languages through out the world gets reduced everyday despite the effort of authorities, indigenous groups and other people who are interested in preserving them. In Costa Rica there are 6 indigenous groups which exhibit very different conditions in terms of their use of the language, their traditions and their number of speakers, among others. In 1995, The Board of Education in Costa Rica created a Department of Indigenous Education. This Department is in charge of dealing with all matters related to the teaching and learning of these languages in this country. Although there have been efforts trying to maintain and strengthen the languages, these efforts have met endogenous and exogenous difficulties that result in weakening and even loss of the languages. This explains what happened to Boruca, one of the indigenous languages of Costa Rica which can now be considered an extinct language. In spite of the efforts from institutions and researchers, this language has not been able to survive the pressure of the Spanish influence and now can be added to the list of languages that disappear. A lot of effort is required so that the other languages in the area do not face this same situation. Although the Costa Rican territory is said to be small when compared with other Latin American countries, we still enjoy an interesting variety of indigenous languages. Six indigenous languages are officially acknowledged in Costa Rica: maleku in the northern part of the country, bribri and cabecar in the southern Caribbean region and guaymí, terraba and boruca in the Southern Pacific.
