Since the material in the previous and present volumes is inaccessible except in the largest libraries, it is believed that the immediate publication of the material at hand in an edition large enough to supply all libraries in the state, will be appreciated by the general public and will take care of their immediate needs. Material is being gathered for a supplementary work which will bring the sketches forward. The gathering of this material is a considerable task and involves research in newspaper files, public records, and the carrying on of voluminous correspondence.
