‘Feelings of victims irrelevant’ President Duterte’s move to have Ferdinand Marcos buried at Libingan ng mga Bayani is a political decision and does not consider the feelings of victims of human rights abuses under the dictator’s rule, the Supreme Court was told on Wednesday. Solicitor General Jose Calida and Marcos lawyer Hyacinth Rafael-Antonio presented to the court the case for Marcos’ burial at Libingan in the second round of oral arguments on petitions by victims of martial law abuses opposing the move. Antonio told the magistrates that the “emotions and feelings of the victims have no relevance” to the case. He said the issue was simply whether Mr. Duterte committed grave abuse of discretion, adding that the victims of martial law abuses could seek remedies under other statutes. Calida urged the court to set aside “epithets and ad hominem arguments,” and consider the “wisdom and propriety of the President’s well-meaning desire to put closure to this divisive issue.” He said “questions of policy and wisdom” were beyond the ambit of judicial review. On questioning by Associate Justice , Calida said he was unaware that former first lady Imelda Marcos had sent a letter to Mr. Duterte requesting a hero’s burial for the dictator. Leonen asked if the letter sought forgiveness for the dictator’s sins. “Before God forgives Christians, there should be a request for forgiveness,” he remarked. Marcos seeking forgiveness is not relevant to the issue, Calida said. “What’s material is political wisdom and maturity.” Status quo ante order After eight hours, the court adjourned and ordered the lawyers—the petitioners presented their case last week—to submit their respective position papers in 20 days. The court also extended its 20-day status quo ante order issued on Aug. 24 to Oct. 18. Marcos, who ruled the for 20 years, 14 under martial law, was ousted in the People Power Revolution in 1986. He died in exile in Hawaii in 1989. The remains have been on display for 23 years in a glass coffin in his Batac, Ilocos Norte province, hometown. His family wants him buried at Libingan. Last week, the petitioners told the court that the burial of Marcos at Libingan would be a national tragedy; that it would glorify a tyrant and aggravate the injustices heaped on his victims. Accomplished fact Calida said the court had respected the decisions of past Presidents on the disposition of Marcos’ remains. “If the prerogatives of these former Presidents were respected by this honorable court, so must it be with President Duterte,” he said. Justice Alfredo Benjamin Caguioa questioned Calida if the burial of Marcos at Libingan would “retraumatize” his regime’s victims. While he feels for them, Calida said, there are other venues for that pain to be expressed. “Making them recount their experience is also a form of retraumatization,” he replied. Justice asked if Duterte committed grave abuse of discretion by disregarding existing court rulings. Calida said the cases against Marcos were civil and not criminal. Since the strongman died without being convicted of a crime involving moral turpitude, Calida said there was no reason to disqualify him from burial at Libingan under Armed Forces of the Philippines Regulation No. G161-375. Citing the same rules, Justice Teresita Leonardo-de Castro noted that a Medal of Valor awardee like Marcos was entitled to a burial at Libingan. She asked if there were rules that provided for the revocation of the medal. Vox populi Retired Brig. Gen. Restituto Aguilar, chief of the Veterans Memorial and Historical Division, said there were none. Picking up on this interpellation, Calida said that “once it is awarded, it cannot be diminished or nullified, because it’s a fait accompli.” But Chief Justice railed against the repeated citation of the AFP rules, after Calida admitted that the awarding of a Medal of Valor to Marcos makes him effectively a war hero. “You’re using AFP regulations to force upon this Court your definition of a hero,” she told Calida. “You are reducing us to a court that will legitimize everything due to a regulation by AFP.” “Are our pronouncements so meaningless to you … that all of them will be set aside so you can justify under just an administrative issuance, just so the President can fulfill a promise made during his campaign?” Sereno asked. The justices also zoomed in on Calida’s argument that Duterte was simply exercising his presidential discretion to fulfill his campaign promise to bury Marcos. “The sovereign people responded, the vox populi is too definite to ignore,” Calida said. 6 Questions raised on warrantless arrests Malacañang’s guideline on the state of national emergency that allows a warrantless arrest when the person concerned has voluntarily waived his right against such an arrest has drawn concern that it might be abused or cause confusion. Under the rules of criminal procedure, warrantless arrests are allowed in three instances even without a national emergency, and the Palace listed these same provisions in its guidelines for the implementation of Proclamation No. 55 declaring a state of national emergency on account of lawless violence in Mindanao. But a fourth one was added, which is “when the person arrested, or to be arrested, has voluntarily waived his right against warrantless arrest.” Bayan Muna Rep. Carlos Zarate, a lawyer, said Malacañang should clarify this provision and that he had reservations about this as it might be used to coerce people to allow authorities to take them in even without a proper warrant. According to Zarate, police could invite people to the police station, then arrest them later and claim that their acceptance of the invitation constituted their consent to the warrantless arrest. “It might be used for justification in instances where persons are invited by police and subsequently face complaints, even without a warrant,” Zarate said in a phone interview. In reality, many people find it hard to refuse police invitations, he said. Interpretations Zarate said lawyers and law enforcement agencies may have different interpretations of Malacañang’s fourth provision allowing arrests without warrants, which is why it would be better for the Duterte administration to clarify what it means. Under the rules of court, arrests without warrant are valid under three conditions: The person to be arrested has committed, is actually committing, or is attempting to commit an offense in the presence of the arresting officer. When an offense has just been committed and the arresting officer has personal knowledge of facts indicating that the person to be arrested has committed the offense. When the person to be arrested is a prisoner, who has escaped from a penal establishment or the place where he is serving his final judgment to temporarily be confined while his case is pending. Nothing wrong Senate President Pro-Tempore Franklin Drilon finds nothing new with the conditions for warrantless arrest set forth in Proclamation No. 55. “For me, that’s right because the first three are in the rules of court… The fourth is voluntary surrender, so there’s nothing wrong with that either,” Drilon said. “So the warrantless arrest is actually provided for under our existing rules,” he said. Susceptible to abuse But lawyer Ibarra Gutierrez, a former Akbayan representative, said the provision on waiving the right to warrantless arrests in the Malacañang guidelines was “problematic” and “susceptible to abuse.” “It’s very, very difficult to say on the ground when a person is voluntarily waiving a right out of fear, or is simply coerced into going,” Gutierrez told the Inquirer in a phone interview. He noted that there were Supreme Court decisions saying that depending on the circumstances, an invitation to questioning from the police was actually an arrest because the person concerned did not really have the option to refuse. Any waiver of any right must also be done in the presence of counsel, and in writing. And waiving one’s right does not mean letting go of other rights, he pointed out. Gutierrez also warned that the inclusion in the guidelines of the provision to waive the right against warrantless arrest “sends a message to law enforcement authorities that they can ask people to waive their rights.” The same concern goes for the provision saying intrusive actions during checkpoints are not allowed, unless the subject individual consents or agrees thereto, he said. There would be instances when motorists would find it hard to say no, even if that was well within their rights, he added. Unconstitutional Kabayan Rep. Harry Roque, who is also a lawyer, said any waiver of the right against warrantless arrest must be done in the presence of a lawyer. This is why Roque believes the fourth provision on warrantless arrests in the Malacañang guidelines was unconstitutional. “For you to waive that right, that must be done in the presence of counsel,” Roque said over the phone. Follow standards Zarate said standards should be followed when a person waived a right. The person must understand what exactly he was giving up and what would be the consequences of his decision. He noted that a person’s waiver of right to counsel must be made in the presence of a lawyer. The only instance when he thinks the fourth provision could apply is when a person voluntarily surrenders to authorities for something he had done, the lawmaker said. But even in such a case, he said, the person’s rights to counsel and against self-incrimination were not waived. He also believes this waiver of the right against warrantless arrest is not the same as the waiver of the right to question the illegality of an arrest. The latter happens when the person who was arrested without a warrant shows up in court and allows himself to be arraigned. Premium on civil rights Assistant Secretary Marie Banaag of the Presidential Communications Office for Legal Affairs said the guidelines for the implementation of the proclamation put a premium on civil rights. “We’d like to emphasize that the proclamation… Proclamation No. 55 is not meant to undermine the Bill of Rights,” she said in a press briefing. 7 Duterte: Let’s rid Asean of narcotics VIENTIANE—The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) must have a firmer commitment to stamp out the narcotics trade, terrorism and other cross-border crimes to ensure development in the region. President Duterte delivered this message on Tuesday night to senior business leaders during the Asean Business and Investment Summit, one of the related conferences being held on the sidelines of the three-day 29th Asean summit. Reading a prepared speech, the President underscored the importance of enhanced cooperation in curbing transnational crimes to enable the 10- member organization to “confidently play its rightful role as a global player contributing to the economic growth and prosperity.” Mr. Duterte, who earned global notoriety for his controversial take-no- prisoner policy against illegal drugs, urged business leaders to take a more active role in regional development. “The trade (in) illegal drugs, in particular, has emerged as a pressing problem for our countries, undermining social cohesion and the rule of law and socioeconomic program of a country,” the President said in his seven- minute speech. “Asean needs stronger resolve and action to combat transnational crime, one of the most difficult and complex problems that we face in the region and a pressing concern for the Philippines,” he told the gathering at Muong Thanh Luxury Hotel. Mr. Duterte said terrorism would only stunt economic progress in the region of 625 million people. Amid the continued security threats from terrorist organizations, he said the Asean should come together “in concert to ensure that the economic gains we made so far will advance at full speed.” “We shall not be cowed. We will press on. We must redouble our efforts to concentrate on intelligence gathering, prevention, interdiction, arrest and prosecution,” he said. Facing allegations of human rights abuses arising from his administration’s war on drugs, the President stressed that he put “great importance on how laws are crafted and implemented to bring good governance and order.” Mr. Duterte said a country’s legal system should “provide an enabling environment for the country’s progress and prosperity.” The President pointed out four important factors which the Asean should do to attain the regional bloc’s aim to become a global player. First, he said the Asean should effectively enforce the previous agreements crafted since its founding in 1967, among them improved economic integration between member-states. Inclusive growth “On the part of the Philippines, our economic focus will be toward the promotion of inclusive growth through innovation in four areas—micro, small and medium enterprises, e-commerce, youth and women entrepreneurship,” he said. “It certainly took an immense amount of effort and compromise as member states shared their commitment and political resolve to accommodate and reconcile national interest with the regional the aspiration of one nation Asean community,” he added. Next, he said the Asean should work for faster growth and integration through the sub-regional cooperation frameworks, such as the Greater Mekong Sub-Region, the Indonesia-Malaysia-Thailand Growth Triangle and the Brunei-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA). The President said his administration would make use of the BIMP-EAGA to promote development in Mindanao and the Visayas by speeding up government spending on public infrastructure, like national roads and bridges. He said the Philippine government would also work on expanding the roll- on, roll-off sea ferries servicing the Davao-General Santos and Bitung in Indonesia route. Third, the President said the Asean should promote the development of micro, small, medium enterprises and “look for all ways to connect them in the countries of the Asean and the world.” Lastly, Mr. Duterte said the regional bloc should work with other nations “in a robust way in economic sphere.”

PH Consulate in SF, US labor dep’t widen workers’ rights drive SAN FRANCISCO – Officials of the US labor department and the Philippine Consulate here signed a memorandum of understanding for the joint the promotion of labor rights and awareness and understanding of workplace laws applicable to all Filipino nationals regardless of immigration status. The MOU signing was timed to mark Labor Rights Week August 29- September 4 this year. Signing for the U. S. Department of Labor Wage and Hour Division Western Regional Office was Administrator Ruben Rosalez while Consul General Henry Bensurto Jr. was on hand to sign for the PCG in San Francisco. “We’ve partnered with Filipino workers in Los Angeles to start a 1-800 number that’s hooked up with different agencies including ours that they can call that and file a complaint. There is someone that can speak the language they can understand like Ilocano and Tagalog and we’ll give you information,” Rosalez reported. Complaints from all over “We get calls from Seattle, Hawaii, and from other places as complaints are from all over,” Rosalez added. “This is the beginning of establishing a direct connection that they can call and they can feel comfortable filing a complaint with and asking some questions about their conditions.” Philippine Consulate General in San Francisco signed its first arrangement with the Wage and Hour Division San Francisco District Office together with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) San Francisco Region also at PCG San Francisco on November 14, 2013. Another arrangement was signed on September 5, 2014, this time with the DOL-WHD Southwest Regional Office encompassing Colorado, Montana, Utah and Wyoming over which the consulate has jurisdiction. The newly signed MOU covers areas with shared jurisdiction over Alaska, Idaho, Oregon, Washington, Northern Nevada and Northern California, which is broader in scope as it is regional and not just district-wide. “As we are about to sign and make this historic event solidify for us, one thing we have to remember is that even starting tomorrow there is somebody that needs our help. There is somebody right now who is not getting minimum wage, not getting proper overtime (pay). There are people in slave labor. There is human trafficking going on right now. We have to make a commitment and our signature on this document is our commitment in the Department of Labor to eradicate those. We are going to end that. We are going to give everybody what they are entitled to have,” Rosalez declared. Regardless of status “The Philippine Consulate has always been a partner with the Department of Labor. “It is extremely important for Filipino workers to know of their rights regardless of their immigration status, and I am very proud of the work we have been doing with the wage and hour division,” stated DOL- WHD San Francisco District Office Director Susana Blanco. Blanco also reported that they have been able to put more than $5 million in the hands of abused Filipino workers who sometimes had to work 100 hours a week in residential health care industry. “I want everybody to feel comfortable in coming to us because whatever information given to us is kept confidential. And again we are glad that we do investigation and it doesn’t matter what the immigration status is for an individual,” Blanco reiterated. Empleo Pinoy “We also have launched a program in Southern California called Empleyo Pinoy where individuals can call us at an 1-877-8856641 number they can feel free to call. There is going to be an individual who can take information from them, if there is a complaint that they want to file, it would be done anonymously. And that information would be passed to the proper agencies and whatever action needs to be taken will be taken.” Consul General Bensurto said that with the MOU, he wished that “fear would turn to hope to alleviate the plight of those so-called TNT who are usually willing to take all the sufferings in terms of unfair or non-payment of wages for being undocumented and therefore not entitled to protection.” “The law is applicable and does not discriminate against undocumented worker. This is something we really have to disseminate this information to them to take that fear away,” Bensurto stressed.

Welcome to the club, Duterte Harry VIENTIANE— As bodies continue to pile up in his war on illegal drugs, President Duterte is making waves at his first summit of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) where he joins a diverse cast of leaders, including some who have found themselves in the crosshairs of human rights watchdogs. Mr. Duterte would fit right in, critics say, and even the show. As the new Philippine leader, he brings a long-blemished rights record into the 10-nation Asean bloc, which has struggled with internal strife due to its unwieldy collective of dictatorships, authoritarian states, a monarchy and fledgling democracies since its founding nearly half a century ago as an Asian bulwark against communism. “For most Asean leaders, Duterte represents a throwback to an uglier and more brutal form of Asian state, which taints Asean efforts to market itself as an increasingly progressive, modernizing trade bloc with a focus on trade data, rather than daily police-killing body counts,” said Phelim Kine of New York-based Human Rights Watch. Once a government prosecutor who fought outlaws and insurgents, Mr. Duterte was a longtime mayor of Davao City, where he started to build a name for his deadly anticrime campaign—he was nicknamed “Duterte Harry” after Clint Eastwood’s “Dirty Harry” movie character. Since he assumed the presidency on June 30, his crackdown on suspected drug dealers and users has left more than 3,000 people dead. More than 600,000 others, mostly drug addicts, have surrendered apparently for fear of being gunned down. “That dynamic means that Duterte can expect his most meaningful face- time in Laos with other Asean embarrassments such as Cambodia’s dictator Hun Sen, representatives of Thailand’s military junta and his authoritarian Laotian hosts,” Kine said. Sympathetic ear Mr. Duterte can rely on these leaders to lend him a sympathetic ear for “his grotesque justifications of abuse of rule of law and state-sanctioned extrajudicial violence as the price of a ‘secure’ society,” Kine added. In a rare moment of diplomatic tumult ahead of an Asean summit, the 71- year-old Duterte cursed on Monday at US President Barack Obama, warning the world’s most powerful man not to question him about the rising body count in his crackdown or “son of a bitch I will swear at you.” This was hours before they were supposed to meet in the Laotian capital. The next day, Mr. Duterte expressed regret but it was too late. An evidently offended Obama had by then canceled Tuesday’s meeting, which was shaping up as the most-awaited, again because of Duterte—he had recently unleashed abuses at the US ambassador to Manila, calling him gay in derogatory terms and railed against America’s security policies. Obama is the latest victim of the Philippine leader’s foul tongue. In the few months since the election campaign and more than two months into the presidency, Mr. Duterte has cursed the Pope, the UN secretary general and gotten into verbal tussles with the Catholic Church in the Philippines. Aside from his deadly record, his disdain for statecraft, irreverence and bluntly frank and profane language would likely weigh on Asean, a conservative group steeped in tradition, protocol and nuanced rhetoric. Reversal of roles Asean’s still in a flux. In an incredible reversal of roles, for example, the Philippines was the democracy champions just years ago and was pushing then military-ruled Burma (Myanmar) to move toward democratic reforms. Burma is now led by Nobel Peace laureate Aung San Suu Kyi, who fought her country’s military junta while languishing in home detention for decades. Asean came into being during the Cold War era, and has long been hamstrung by the stark diversity of its member governments along with a bedrock rule of noninterference in each other’s affairs and a policy of making decision by consensus. That has allowed leaders like Hun Sen, Thailand’s coup leader-turned- premier, Prayuth Chan-ocha, the faceless one-party communist rulers of Laos and Vietnam, and the general who once ruled Burma to occupy regional legitimacy and defy the West’s call for democratic governance. Asean says it’s best to keep dictators in its midst engaged, because dialogue helps to keep them in check. It takes credit for helping Burma’s generals give up power. It also says it is necessary to keep the diverse nations together so that they have a stable platform to resolve conflicts and integrate their economies as a counterweight to Asian powerhouses China and India. Adored by followers Mr. Duterte rejects any suggestion that he is a dictator. He sees himself as a leader with an extra tough approach on crime, especially on illegal drugs, because the problem has worsened into a pandemic, corrupting law enforcers and sparking heinous crimes. In Asean, he said he would assure the bloc and other countries that there would be no radical shifts in Philippine policies under him. While critics cringe, Mr. Duterte has been adored by a substantial electorate of followers who gave him a convincing election victory on a promise to eradicate crime, drug trafficking and corruption in six months. The tall promise was embraced by crime-weary Filipinos but abhorred by opponents and rights groups as a dangerous expansion of his rights record in Davao City, where he was linked to killings with his tacit endorsements of vigilante extermination of alleged drug dealers by motorcycle-riding death squads. Anna Olarte, an English teacher at an international school in Vientiane, trooped to a convention center with more than 700 other Laos-based Filipinos to see and cheer the Philippine leader she voted for. When Mr. Duterte walked up the stage and bowed deeply before her and others, Olarte said her heart melted. “It was like, my God, this is my President,” she said. AP RELATED VIDEOS

Tugade aide clarifies ‘state of mind’ traffic MANILA — Transportation Assistant Secretary for Communications Cherie Mercado-Santos took exception to the Philippine Daily Inquirer’s article on Secretary Arthur Tugade’s urging Filipinos to shed the mindset of using “traffic” as an excuse for tardiness. In a letter to the Philippine Daily Inquirer, Mercado- Santos said Tugade never said ‘Traffic is just a state of mind.” She said Tugade said: “the prevailing Filipino psyche of using traffic as an excuse must be changed. That kind of state of mind that automatically uses traffic as an excuse, unnecessarily adds to the problem of traffic.” “What the Secretary is asking, is a change of psyche, a platform of cooperation for citizens to be part of the solution, for Filipinos to simply be truthful,” Mercado-Santos pointed out. ‘State of mind adds to the problem’ The Inquirer stands by its story pertaining to the Secretary’s remarks which were part of his speech and which he later confirmed and even repeated in a chance interview when he was asked to clarify his statement. “Even when there (was) no traffic, (people) say there was,” Tugade scoffed during the launch on Tuesday of the premium bus service at Ninoy Aquino International Airport. “A state of mind adds to the problem of traffic,” he stressed. “Let’s stop blaming traffic. If you’re late, that’s that.” Tugade added: “One thing we will have to address in solving traffic: change your psyche. Change your psyche (that allows) you to every now and then use as a convenient excuse that one word: traffic.” SFM

Southeast Asia issues a non-rebuke to China VIENTIANE, Laos — A summit of Southeast Asian countries issued a mild rebuke of China on Wednesday over its expansionist activities in the disputed South China Sea, and indirectly urged it to show restraint and not raise tensions. In a victory for Beijing’s diplomatic, economic and military clout, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations couldn’t even get all of its 10 members to agree that China was responsible for building islands in the disputed and resource-rich sea. A statement issued at the end of the ASEAN summit said in regard to the South China Sea, “We remain seriously concerned over recent and ongoing developments,” without elaborating. It did not mention China by name. The statement said the summit “took note of the concerns expressed by some leaders on the land reclamations and escalation of activities in the area, which have eroded trust and confidence, increased tensions and may undermine peace, security and stability in the region.” China has recently developed shoals and coral reefs into seven islands with massive land reclamation work. Some of the islands have airstrips capable of handling military aircraft. The use of the phrase “some leaders” in the statement underscores the fundamental problem ASEAN has had in dealing with China — not all of its members are willing to scold it. Cambodia remains firmly in China’s camp, as is Laos to a large extent, preventing any robust statement from the consensus-bound group. The issue of ownership of territories in the South China Sea has come to dominate ASEAN summit meetings in recent years. China claims virtually the entire sea as its own, citing historical reasons. That has pitted it against the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia and Brunei, all members of ASEAN. On July 12, an international arbitration tribunal ruled against China’s claims, saying they were illegal. It also rebuked China for forcibly preventing Filipinos from fishing in their traditional areas. Beijing has rejected the ruling and continued its activities. The ASEAN statement made no mention of the tribunal. On Wednesday, the Philippine government released what it says are surveillance pictures of Chinese coast guard ships and barges at disputed Scarborough shoal in the South China Sea. It was an apparent attempt to publicize its concerns before ASEAN leaders met with Chinese Premier Li Kequiang in the Laotian capital in a side summit. The Philippines is concerned that China may plan to turn the shoal into another man-made island. But Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said China has not done anything to alter the circumstances surrounding the shoal. “What I can tell you is that the situation in waters near Huangyan Island remains unchanged and China hasn’t made any new moves,” Hua said in Beijing, using the shoal’s Chinese name. “We should be highly alert against the mischief-making intentions of people who spread such groundless information in such situations.” New Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has taken a more conciliatory approach than his predecessor to rebuild relations with China, and has said he would not raise the long-simmering territorial dispute in an adversarial manner that might upset Beijing. Relations were severely strained under Duterte’s predecessor because of the conflict. The U. S. military has also expressed concern over the possibility that China might turn Scarborough into another island, something that would give Beijing’s forces greater control over a swath of the South China Sea used as a passageway to the Taiwan Strait.

NDF hails Duterte’s bashing of US DAVAO CITY – The National Democratic Front (NDF) lauded President Duterte’s anti-US statement, calling it “unprecedented” even as the rebel group urged the President to junk unequal agreements with the US. “The National Democratic Front in Southern Mindanao commends President Duterte for his unprecedented statement,” said the statement signed by Rubi deal Mundo, spokesperson of the NDF in Southern Mindanao. “No other Philippine president has ever publicly censured and taken US imperialism to task for its atrocious crimes against sovereign nations and peoples of the world.” The NDF said that the US, accustomed to high regard as a colonial master, only has “had nothing but blind kowtowing from previous Philippine puppet regimes,” referring to the previous administrations. “Now at this critical time of its decisive hegemonic pivot to Asia and China’s challenge to its regional dominance, US imperialism’s sham ‘concern for human rights is being challenged with open hostility by a government it considers its reliable lackey,” the statement said, referring to the Philippines. “The US government should be reminded and brought to justice for the millions of deaths in its hands, perpetrated in the name of consolidating its imperialist power over other sovereign states.” The statement said the US is worried about the present developments unraveling in the Philippines— the prospect of peace based on social justice. “It can lose its control of the country if the peace negotiations with the NDF, and its armed wing the New People’s Army (NPA) should translate to the socio-economic and sovereign interest of the Filipino people,” the statement said. “Hence, it is in its best interest to exploit anti-Duterte forces to sabotage the peace negotiations with the NDFP and preempt any substantial talks with Moro revolutionary groups by fomenting anti-Moro sentiments with US- backed bombings and other terrorist attacks.” it added. But the NDF said calling US imperialism a “two-faced terrorist” is a “fundamental step,” but it’s not enough. “It must also translate to junking colonial agreements for the benefit of the Filipino people,” the NDF statement said. “President Duterte and his government must abrogate the Mutual Defense Treaty and junk the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement,” explaining that these policies only continue to “position the Philippines as a willing pawn for US imperialism’s wars of aggression.” The NDF said Mr. Duterte must persevere with his anti-imperialist stance in the course of the Asean summit in Laos, chart an independent international policy by repudiating US intervention and neoliberal policies and enjoin other member-nations to do the same. The NDF also urged President Duterte to seriously consider the central components of the proposed Comprehensive Agreement on Socio- Economic Reforms (Caser), the next substantive agenda in the recently resumed talks between the rebel groups and the government. The statement said that Caser aims to “unchain the economy from the fetters of neoliberalism by advancing genuine land reform and national industrialization.”

FEU ‘exceeded’ Racela’s expectations despite loss to La Salle Far Eastern University may have dropped its season opener to La Salle, but the loss didn’t deprive the Tamaraws from making a point. “It surprised me also. What it gave us is the belief that we can still compete this season,” said FEU head coach Nash Racela. An entirely different team minus the core of their championship run last season, The Tamaraws weren’t supposed to drag the Green Archers, who are this season’s unanimous favorite, into a tense endgame. READ: La Salle survives tough stand from FEU “Again, when you have a young team, you become unpredictable. I think compared to last year, we don’t have stability, going into a game, we knew that somebody will perform. This year, we have a young and inexperienced team,” said Racela. There’s no Mac Belo to make big plays, no Mike Tolomia to create shots and no Roger Pogoy to hit big threes, but on Wednesday, these youthful Tamaraws had the whole team showing up to nearly defy the odds. “I was really surprised today, they exceeded my expectations,” Racela said. READ: Ayo says FEU wanted to ‘hurt, provoke’ La Salle in tune-up What impressed Racela most was FEU was able to take La Salle’s punches and still found itself standing on both feet. “The [biggest surprise was the] fact that we were able to compete against La Salle.” “Going into the season, people talked a lot about their mayhem but when you look at the stats, they had 27 [turnovers] and we only had 17. They were able to see FEU’s version of a mayhem.”

Low scoring output in latest win doesn’t concern Phelps, Phoenix For a high octane team like Phoenix, firing 93 points against Blackwater on Wednesday is already the team’s lowest production in all of its wins. But it’s the least of Eugene Phelps’ concerns as long as the Fuel Masters come away with the win. “It really doesn’t matter. We won,” he said after the team’s 93-81 victory over the Elite at Ynares Center in Antipolo. “The score could be 10-9, but as long as we get the win, that’s what matters.” Personally, Phelps also saw his lowest production in a half with eight, but eventually picked up the slack and finished with 29 points, 26 rebounds, and four assists in the win. “We started playing sluggish, but it doesn’t really matter. We got the win,” he said. With Phelps leading the fort, coach Ariel Vanguardia’s Fuel Masters have now won their third straight and got four of their last five outings. And the import at the forefront of this stretch could only laud the whole team for their tremendous effort as they improved to 5-4 at solo fifth place. “We’ve just been having a good week of practice. Lately, we’ve been coming as a team. We just play hard at practice and convert it to the games,” he said. The 26-year-old big man, though, admits that the grind is slowly taking a toll on him. But he’s been getting a lot of back-up from the locals like Cyrus Baguio, Simon Enciso, and, in this game against the Elite, Mark Borboran. “I got great teammates and I believe in them. If I see them wide open, I’m going to give them the ball. If I get a one-on-one situation, I’m going to attack the basket,” he said.

Good defense leads to Alaska rout of Globalport Going back to basics, Alaska fired on all cylinders to gain separation from GlobalPort, 133-106, Wednesday in the 2016 PBA Governors’ Cup at Ynares Center in Antipolo. It was an all-out assault for the Aces, who were coming off a 10-day break, with import LaDontae Henton leading the ship with 33 points, 13 rebounds, and four assists. Calvin Abueva also went for 21 markers, eight boards, three dimes, and two blocks, while Chris Banchero came off the bench and proved to be the spark plug for Alaska with 20 points, six rebounds, and four assists. Sonny Thoss and JVee Casio both wound up with 13 markers each in the win. The victory puts the Aces at a seventh place tie with NLEX and Rain or Shine at 4-5. Though the guady scoring may catch people’s attention, Alex Compton gave more credit to his team’s defense. “What we talked about all week was defense, defense, and defense,” he said. “Sa akin, maganda ang depensa namin. Pero playoffs na ito at kailangan pa naming dumepensa ng maayos.” Alaska greatly outrebounded GlobalPort, 53-37, while also clicking on offense with its 55-point shooting as it cruised to the 27-point blowout. Terrence Romeo paced GlobalPort (3-6) with 26 points, six assists, and four rebounds, while reinforcement Mike Glover got 25 markers and five boards. 16 PH dollar reserves hit record-high $85.9B by August end MANILA — The country’s dollar reserves hit a record-high of $85.9 billion as of August, the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) said Wednesday . The end-of-August gross international reserves (GIR) level was also higher than the $85.5 billion recorded a month ago as well as the $80.3 billion a year ago, preliminary BSP data showed. In a statement, BSP Governor Amado M. Tetangco Jr. attributed the higher GIR mostly to “the national government’s net foreign currency deposits and the BSP’s foreign exchange operations and income from investments abroad.” The increase in GIR last month, however, was partially offset by the national government’s payments for maturing forex obligations, as well as revaluation adjustments on the BSP’s gold holdings due to a decline in global gold prices, Tetangco added. The GIR level at end-August can cover 10.5 months’ worth of imports of goods as well as payments of income and services. The dollar reserves were also equivalent to six times the short-term external debt based on original maturity, as well as 4.3 times based on residual maturity. The BSP defines short-term debt based on residual maturity as outstanding foreign debt whose original maturity was a year or less, plus principal payments on medium- and long-term loans of the government as well as the private sector that were due within the next 12 months. As for net international reserves, or the difference between the GIR and total short-term liabilities, these likewise rose to $85.9 billion in August from $85.5 billion a month ago. Due to weak global trade in the first quarter, the BSP had slightly cut its projected balance of payments (BOP) position for 2016, which monetary authorities expect to taper to a $2-billion surplus from the earlier projection of a $2.2-billion surplus. The BOP is a summary of all the businesses the country does with the rest of the world. A surplus means the amount of dollars that entered the economy that year was more than the amount that left. The projected end-of-2016 GIR level has been nonetheless kept at about $82.7 billion, higher than 2015’s $80.7 billion and enough to cover nine months’ worth of goods imports and payments of services and income. 17 It's perfectly sensible to want a second referendum. Here's why The New Statesman Cover | The Three Brexiteers In 1955, a referendum was held in Sweden on whether the country should continue to drive on the left or if there should be a switch to the right. A government committee investigating this issue had recommended such a change, the main argument being that this was the traffic system in all neighboring countries (Denmark, Norway, Finland, Germany….). In the mid-1950s, opinion polls were not regularly held and the result of the referendum came as a big surprise. No less than 83 per cent of the voters wanted to keep left-side driving and only 15 per cent supported a change. Constitutionally, however, referendums in Sweden are not binding and in 1963, a very large majority in the Parliament (294 against 50) decided that the country should switch. What is interesting is that there was hardly any critique of this decision from the very large majority who had voted for keeping driving on the left. The actual change of the traffic system took place in 1967 and I vividly remember the massive information campaign during my first weeks in high school. The general mood then and ever since has been that it was a very wise decision by the Swedish Parliament to disregard the referendum and decide to change. The 83 per cent who voted against a change had simply been wrong. Although the issue of UK remaining or leaving the European Union is a bigger thing, this shows that the result of a referendum should neither be seen as set in stone nor as having absolute democratic legitimacy. In fact, it is easy to come up with examples where it is clear that majorities have been completely and utterly wrong. This is true in ethical issues (think of the white racist majority in the American south during the civil rights movement in the 1960s, or the situation in Germany in the 1930s). But it is also true when it comes to matters of fact, as shown in the many local referendums in the United States about water fluoridation. Although the scientific evidence of the benefits of this is crystal clear, many local referendums have produced majorities against. This has been detrimental both to the voters’ (and especially their children’s) personal health and also resulted in much larger bills from their dentists. In political philosophy, this is known as the “epistemic problem of democracy”. Simply put, political legitimacy is not only dependent on a decision getting support by the majority. In addition, the epistemic theory of democracy points to the need for the decisions to also be in some sense “true” and “right”. Decisions need to be “true” in the sense that they are not based on what is known to be factually wrong. A case in point is former South African President Thabo Mbeki’s policies for handling the HIV/AIDS disease. According to a conservative estimation, the policies launched by the democratically elected South African government in this area caused the premature death of some 340,000 individuals. As is well-known, the party responsible for this catastrophe continues to have the support of a majority of voters in South Africa. Moreover, decisions needs to be “right” in the sense that ever so large majorities should not infringe on individual human and political rights, as now seem to be the case in Turkey. In this light, another illustration about the problems with referendums can be seen from the decision about nuclear power in Sweden. After the disaster at the Harrisburg nuclear power plant in the U. S. in 1979, the Swedish government panicked and decided that a referendum should be held about the future use of nuclear energy. The issue of nuclear had been very high on the country’s political agenda since the beginning of the 1970s. The political parties produced three alternatives for the referendum, all stating that nuclear power should be abolished. The first proposed that the six existing nuclear power plants should be closed within 10 years and the six new plants that were either planned or being constructed should not be opened. The other two alternatives differed about public or private ownership but both stated that nuclear power should be abolished when other energy resources were available. In the debate, this was said to be within 25 years. The majority voted for these two latter alternatives, thought of as ending nuclear power “within reason”. The referendum was held in 1980, and now, 36 years later, nine of the 12 nuclear power plants are still running. A clear majority voted to have nuclear power abolished by 2005 but this has not happened. The reason is that the successful proposals won because they promised something that in reality they could not guarantee, namely that other (and more safe) sources of energy would be available within a specific time horizon. The referendum in 1980 is now generally seen as an embarrassment. The implication from this example for the Brexit referendum is this. If the Brexit referendum had been about nuclear power, the “remain” alternative would have been that the country should continue to use this source of energy. The “leave” side’s alternative would have been that nuclear power should be replaced by “magic power”. Magic power, the leave side would have said, is free, safe and clean and thus a better alternative than nuclear power. My point is this – the leave side won because they, like the winning side in the Swedish referendum about nuclear power, promised something that does not exist. The idea that the UK could leave the EU but still have access to the single market without paying into the EU budget is a clear fantasy. Within days of the referendum result, leading politicians on the leave side had to admit that what they had promised was a mirage. Similarly, the idea that Britain will get access to the EU market but say no to free movement of labour is also pure fantasy – the likelihood that countries such as Poland and Romania would not veto such a deal is zero. The slogan “Brexit means Brexit” is thus meaningless because no one knows what a Brexit alternative will look like. This is the downside of referendums, namely that it is too easy to win if you launch an alternative that is a mirage. Real politics is about taking responsibility for making difficult choices between far-from-perfect “real-world” alternatives. The implication is that when the leave side finally produces a deal that instead of offering magic specifies the actual conditions under which the United Kingdom will leave the EU, there should be a new referendum. 20 Tshwane mayor Solly Msimanga rejects South Africa luxury cars A new mayor in South Africa has rejected a fleet of luxury cars he inherited from his predecessors. Solly Msimanga, from the opposition Democratic Alliance (DA), said the vehicles would instead be given to a police anti-hijack unit. The DA took control of Tshwane, a metropolitan area which includes the capital, Pretoria, from the ANC in recent local elections. Mr Msimanga said no more luxury cars would be bought under his leadership. He took over from the ruling African National Congress (ANC), which lost control of the capital for the first time since 1994, last month. More on this and other African stories Four things from South Africa election The ANC bought 10 new BMW 3 series vehicles, which are yet to be delivered, for 5 million rand ($356,000; £266,000), local reports say. The cars were meant for members of the mayoral council, with the ANC said to be confident it would retain control of the municipality in the elections. Mr Msimango says the DA-led coalition government wanted to embark on cost-cutting measures. He said in a statement: "No new luxury cars will be bought or leased for politicians‚ and if vehicles currently owned by Tshwane require replacement‚ sensible and low-cost vehicles will be procured. " "I will not allow public money to be spent on luxury cars‚ while our people struggle for services‚ houses and jobs," the statement read. "A Hyundai i20 or Toyota Corolla can do the same job for a politician as an expensive sedan. " The ANC national government has been criticised for wasteful expenditure, so South Africans will be closely watching what the opposition do differently in the key urban areas, they won in the August elections, says the BBC's Pumza Fihlani in Johannesburg. South Africans will be keen to see if the opposition, which has until now only run one province, will be able to make good on its ambitious election promises, our correspondent says.

Egypt: Outrage as MP opposes tougher FGM laws because of 'impotent men' An Egyptian MP has stirred controversy after rejecting tougher penalties for those who force women into genital mutilation (FGM), saying half of the country's men "are impotent". Parliament last week approved longer jail terms for those carrying out FGM, following the death of a teenage girl. MP Ilhami Agina responded by saying FGM was needed in order to reduce women's sexual appetite, to match Egypt's men. The procedure is still widespread in Egypt despite being illegal since 2008. It involves the partial or full removal of the external sex organs, ostensibly to control women's sexuality. "This is a scientific fact based on research. Fifty per cent of Egyptian men are sexually impotent. This is a disease," Mr Agina said in a TV interview. "One proof is the spread of imported and local sexual stimulants in the market. Egypt is one of the largest importing countries. " He was quoted by other Egyptian media as saying the procedure was needed so women would "reduce their sexual desires" to match that of Egypt's "sexually weak" men. "If we stop FGM, we will need strong men and we don't have men of that sort. " Source: World Health Organization Find out more from the WHO BBC ethics guide: Female circumcision Mr Agina's comments on FGM sparked a furious reaction on social media. Meanwhile, a number of MPs want Mr Agina to be referred to the parliamentary ethics panel for "insulting Egyptians in general and men in particular", website Al-Mesryoon reported. 22 Greece flash floods leave at least three dead Three people have been found dead and a woman is missing after torrential rain caused flash flooding in Greece. The worst casualties were in and around the south- western city of Kalamata, where a disabled woman aged 63 and a man of 80 died in their basement homes. A 90 year-old was also found dead. Another woman was missing after abandoning her car in floods in northern Greece. The floods destroyed homes and businesses and swept cars out to sea. Emergency services rescued a Romanian woman and her two children at Igoumenitsa on the north-west coast. The flooding hit towns and cities from Thessaloniki in the north-east to Sparta in the south. Pictures shared on social media showed vehicles stacked on top of each other in narrow streets in Kalamata, the second most populous city in the southern Peloponnese region. Kalamata Mayor Panagiotis Nikas told Reuters news agency that he had "never seen anything like it". "About 140mm of rain fell in an hour this morning. Can you imagine that? " he said. The flooding was so severe that cars were washed out to sea on the outskirts of the northern Greek city of Thessaloniki. South of the city, at Mihaniona, rescue workers were searching for a woman in her fifties whose car was found abandoned after her husband said she had become trapped by rising waters. In October 2015 flash flooding in Athens swept away cars and motorbikes and caused a building to collapse.

Monroe's 'Happy Birthday Mr President' dress to be sold The flesh-coloured dress Marilyn Monroe wore when she breathlessly sang Happy Birthday to President John F Kennedy in 1962, is to be auctioned. She wore it to his 45th birthday celebration at Madison Square Garden in New York, but the garment was so tight she had to be sewn into it. Monroe died less than three months later, and the president died in 1963. The dress was sold in 1999 for $1.26m but Julien's Auctions thinks it could fetch up to £3m (£2.2m) this November. The dress, made of silk gauze and covered in thousands of rhinestone beads and sequins, will go under the hammer in Los Angeles on 17 November. Before then, it will be on show at Mana Contemporary in Jersey City, New Jersey, and the Museum of Style Icons in Newbridge, Ireland.

China uses crowdfunding for Great Wall restoration Heritage officials have launched a crowdfunding campaign to pay for restoration work on the Great Wall of China. More than 16,000 people have donated online since the campaign started at the end of August, raising almost 300,000 yuan ($45,000; £34,000) so far. It's being run by the China Foundation for Cultural Heritage Conservation, a state-supervised body, which says the wall is in serious need of repair, China Radio International reports. Work on the wall began more than 2,000 years ago, but much of what visitors see today was constructed during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644 AD). The foundation says that of more than 6,250km (3883 miles) built during that era, a third has disappeared. It's hoping to raise 11m yuan ($1.7m; £1.2m) by 1 December. Dong Yaohui, who's in charge of the fundraising effort, says protecting such a large site is more than the government can do alone. "By pooling the contribution of every single individual, however small it is, we will be able to form a great wall to protect the Great Wall," he says. The cash will go towards restoring the Xifengkou section, which runs through a reservoir, and according to Mr Dong all spending will be made public. Many Chinese social media users are sceptical about chipping in, though. Some are confused about why such an iconic site has to resort to public handouts. "They have plenty of money, why do they need to crowdfund? " asks one, while another wonders if the Great Wall's admission fee will be waived for donors. But there's some enthusiasm, with one person writing: "I am willing to invest in this! In the future I can proudly tell my grandchildren that this is our family estate! 25 A 16-year-old British girl earns £48,000 helping Chinese people name their babies A 16-year-old has made £48,000 from a website she made to give Chinese babies English names. Beau Jessup, a British A- level student from Gloucestershire, came up with the idea after a family visit to China. They were out for a meal with friends when she was asked to give an English name to a newborn baby. In China it is considered important to have an English name for future study or business with the UK. 'Special Name' requires the user to pick five of the 12 personality traits which they most hope their baby will grow into In China they name their child based on the elements and Beau wanted a similarity between how they pick their Chinese name and how they pick their English name. And she does this by assigning personality traits to each English name. They also select the gender of the baby and pay the equivalent of 60p. The three chosen names are then shared with family and friends on We- Chat, China's WhatsApp equivalent, to help make the final decision. Each suggestion is printed on a certificate with its meaning and an example of a famous person with that name. Beau says that when she was first asked to name her father's friend's baby, she was surprised. "I'm not really qualified or relevant enough in that baby's life to be the person to give it a name. " But after hearing of some of the "embarrassing" names, Beau decided she needed to act. There was someone called Rolex "There are quite a few examples where people have gotten the names wrong. " Beau explains that the Chinese are fascinated by western culture but their access to it is restricted by the government in China. There isn't open access to the internet so they can't use standard baby naming websites that people may use in the UK. "Being exposed to luxury items and things like Harry Potter, Disney films and Lord of the Rings means they use those for reference. "I once heard of someone called Gandalf and another called Cinderella. " Amelia and Oliver were the most popular baby names in England and Wales in 2015 That's according to the Office for National Statistics which released the complete set of data last week. But Beau doesn't know which names are the most popular on her website, and she's "happy about that". "It is called 'special name' and it's based on individual preference and what they personally want their child to be. " Beau says it's quite strange to know she's named more than 200,000 babies "It's nice to be a part of such a happy experience and be a part of those young stages in a baby's life. " The site's success has been a pleasant surprise. "I wanted to do it just to see if an idea could turn into more than just simply an idea. "And I never expected it to become more than just a small project because I never really considered myself very academic. "It is obviously a nice surprise, but it is definitely a surprise. 26 26 Apple tax case: Why is Ireland refusing billions? The European Commission thinks Apple owes the Irish Republic 13bn euros (£11bn). The country's government - and a majority of the population - disagree. It is a position that seems odd in light of Ireland's recent history of economic trouble. It is important to understand that foreign direct investment from large multinationals has been a cornerstone of Ireland's economic strategy since the 1980s. Companies like Apple, Intel and Pfizer employ thousands of people, particularly in regions outside the capital. And while Ireland has much to recommend it - a well-educated, English- speaking, European workforce - it also has a very low corporate tax rate of 12.5%. That rate of corporate tax was jealously guarded during Ireland's recent bailout, when international lenders mooted raising it - but successive finance ministers have kept it firmly off the negotiating table. Ireland has, in the past, been accused by its European neighbours of being a tax haven - and has moved to address concerns. In 2014, under international pressure, it closed off the infamous "double Irish" tax loophole. But this time, the government has repeatedly insisted that tax benefits available to Apple were not exclusive, and the law was "applied fully". Ireland is simply unwilling to compromise over its reputation as an investment destination. Refusing a cash windfall that could boost the country's entire national budget is a difficult political ask, even for those who agree with Ireland's low corporate tax rate and incentives to foreign investment. Yet despite the potential benefits, a poll for the RTE, the national broadcaster, found 62% of respondents said there should be an appeal. Only 24% disagreed (with the remainder not sure). And the situation is even more one-sided and clear-cut among politicians. Ireland has a minority government. The main party, Fine Gael, has only 50 of the 158 seats, and is supported by a collection of independents. Its ability to govern is mostly down to the country's other main party, Fianna Fail, which has agreed to support its traditional rival on major policy issues such as the national budget - and it also backs an appeal. Opposition, therefore, comes from Sinn Fein and smaller parties, which are broadly left-leaning, and believe the 13bn euros (£11bn) could be put to good use. Richard Boyd Barrett, of People Before Profit, accused Apple of wilful tax evasion, and "robbing" the people of Ireland. However, the cabinet has already decided to appeal against the ruling - with the Taoiseach (Prime Minister) telling the Dail that it is a matter for the executive. The public debate is seen by many as little more than political theatre. In 2011, as in previous years, every Apple product sold in Europe, Middle East, Africa and India was recorded as a sale by Apple Sales International in Ireland. Under its tax arrangement, Apple Sales International then allocated the vast majority of its profits to a head office. According to the EU Commission, this head office existed "only on paper" and therefore its profits were not taxed. Only a small percentage of profits were allocated to the Irish branch of Apple Sales International. As a result, the final 10 million euros tax paid by Apple was equivalent to a rate of 0.05% - this fell to 0.005% by 2014 as profits rose - far less than the 12.5% Ireland charges other companies. Another company, Apple Operations Europe, also based in Ireland, operated in a similar way. While much has been made of the benefits an extra 13bn euros would bring to Ireland - it is the cost of the entire national health budget, and two-thirds of the social welfare bill - it is far from certain Ireland would gain that much. The crux of the whole matter is that sales of any Apple product or service, anywhere in Europe, were officially considered to take place in Ireland - at a very low rate of tax. But the European Commission said that other countries could claim part of the tax if they believe that sales (and other activities) "could have been recorded in their jurisdictions. " On top of that, the commission said, Ireland's tax take could be reduced if the US forces Apple to pay more back to the parent company. This leaves Ireland at the centre of an uncertain tax situation on both sides of the Atlantic. In the meantime, the 13bn euros total is likely to be placed into an escrow account for safekeeping while Apple and Ireland appeal against the ruling - a process which could take years. The technology titan is rare in that it can actually afford to pay 13bn euros - its cash reserves are estimated at over $200bn. But it is furious about the ruling, with CEO Tim Cook branding it as "maddening". "It's clear that this comes from a political place, it has no basis in fact or in law, and unfortunately it's one of those things we have to work through," he told RTE. But he said the company remained committed to Ireland. The confusion comes during a difficult year for Apple. It has seen falling sales, a public legal battle with the FBI over digital privacy, and is releasing the latest version of its iPhone in the wake of this tax row. It is believed Apple will repatriate several billion dollars in profits to the US next year. Under US tax codes, tax is only payable (at 35%) when profits are brought back to the US - which is why many companies leave them overseas, hoping for a lower rate to appear.

Bosnian school pupils reject ethnic divisions Secondary school pupils in a Bosnian town have started the new school year together despite political attempts to separate them along ethnic lines. Education in Bosnia- Herzegovina is not controlled at a national level, and three separate curricula are used in different parts of the country depending on the ethnic make-up of an area - Bosniak (Bosnian Muslim), Serb or Croat. The language of instruction, and how subjects such as history and religion are taught differs under each system. In the town of Jajce, pupils at the two secondary schools currently study in ethnically mixed classes which follow the Croat curriculum, but the regional assembly wants that to change. In June, it voted to establish a new school where Bosniak students would follow their own curriculum, arguing that they were being discriminated against under the existing set-up. "Our children in Jajce study from textbooks printed in Zagreb and are given diplomas with the Croatian coat of arms in the background. This has meant the discrimination and humiliation of Bosniaks for the past 18 years," municipal leader Edin Hozan told the Oslobodjenje daily in July, adding that the move was backed by parents. It seems the students themselves didn't agree, though, as many spent their summer protesting against the plans. "We do not want divisions. We socialise together and we get along," Bosniak student Admira Kasum told the N1 TV channel during one protest. "After we were separated in primary school, it was wonderful when we started secondary school together. We'll do everything not to be divided. " And it seems they've been successful - plans for the new school have been shelved, at least for now. As students returned to school on Monday, the Buka news portal called them "young heroes" for their months-long "rebellion", but noted that the politicians' plans may simply be on hold as they're in the midst of an election campaign. For the students who fought the decision, there's relief. "We are together again and it's great, we see unity in the school," Bosnian-Croat student Ivica Jukanovic tells Bosnia-Herzegovina Federation TV. "I was so glad when I arrived and I could see what I have been fighting for the whole summer. 28 Rahul Gandhi and his Indian media own-goals When the vice president of India's Congress party, Rahul Gandhi, started his election campaign in northern Uttar Pradesh state, it made headlines, but for all the wrong reasons. Mr Gandhi's speech, which focused on the plight of farmers, drew applause from the gathered crowd. But it was the fact that his audience then made off with hundreds of traditional village khaats (cots) that had been brought in for the crowds to sit on, that drew national media attention. Most outlets chose to focus on the dramatic scenes that showed Mr Gandhi's audiences running away with the seating, with one newspaper calling the ensuing chaos A Game of Khaats, punning on the popular television series Game of Thrones and House of Cards. More than 2,000 cots were "stolen" from the venue in Deoria district, reports said. But Mr Gandhi is no stranger to unfortunate media attention. Here are a few other instances where the heir to India's Nehru-Gandhi political dynasty has found himself on the wrong side of the headlines. Mr Gandhi said in 2013 that politics "was everywhere, in your shirt, in your pants", during a speech urging the country's youth to join politics to make India better. Mr Gandhi's intention was to tell young people that there was no way of escaping politics because it touches every aspect of life in India. But social and mainstream media immediately pounced on the statement as being "dumb" and "stupid" and many still quote it out of context to prove his unsuitability as a serious politician. Mr Gandhi received more criticism in 2013 when he compared India to a "beehive". "The beehive is a good analogy, you are masters of complexity, this buzzing sound you don't like, these newspaper stories which drive me nuts, this is your training, developing you to deal with complexity. This is what's going to give you the competitive advantage like nobody has ever had before," he said. Again however, his use of the phrase was construed as being bizarre and the rest of his speech was forgotten in the rush to create "India is a beehive" memes. When Indian boxer Vijender Singh took on Australia's Kerry Hope in a high- octane bout for the global Super Middleweight title in Delhi in July, Mr Gandhi was among the many VIP attendees. Given the high profile nature of the event, it made perfect sense for Mr Gandhi to use the occasion to try to connect with Indians. But again, things did not go as planned. When the camera panned on Mr Gandhi, the crowds began a chant of "Modi! Modi! " leaving him embarrassed in front of TV cameras .

Barcelona FC set up shop in New York to help drive commercial opportunities Barcelona FC have stepped up global expansion efforts with the opening of a new New York City office which will help drive commercial opportunities for the La Liga champions. The New York City office, located at 250 Park Avenue in midtown Manhattan, will serve as a commercial hub for generating new revenue and is part of the Spanish club’s strategic plan to achieve a turnover of €1bn by 2021. Club president, Josep Maria Bartomeu, and a number of club delegates were present at an inauguration ceremony for the opening of the new office yesterday (6 September). The new commercial base will be led by Barcelona’s vice president of marketing and communications, Manel Arroyo, and Francesco Calvo, the club’s chief revenue officer. Barcelona’s US managing director Arno Trabesinger will lead the operation locally alongside Gerard Guiu and Arturo De la Fuente. Speaking to Barça TV at the opening Arroyo said that as well as driving commercial growth, the office would serve as a platform for implementing social and charity projects in New York. “The club needs resources and this office will help us achieve them, but we also need to convey the message and the values that define us,” he said. “Therefore, the schools and the FCB Foundation projects that we are starting will be very important to spread this message. "The United States is a country where sports marketing is a big industry and, here, as well as obtaining resources, we will certainly learn more and improve the management of our assets in this area.” Trabesinger added: “We come to New York at a moment of great expansion in the sport of football in the United States, as well as a wonderful moment, economically speaking, for world football.” The Catalonia club already have a number of sponsorship deals based in the US with brands such as Nike, Gatorade, Stanley Black & Decker and Gillette. The new commercial hub in the city will allow Barcelona to build on this and leverage its strong social media following in the US with its 3.5 million Facebook followers, 275,000 of which are in New York alone. According to Trabesinger this number makes it the “leading football club in the United States”. “It had been Manchester United, but now we are ahead,” he said. The office resides close to the head offices of the National Football League (NFL) and Major League Baseball (MLB) and is the second overseas commercial outpost which the club have set up following the opening of a Hong Kong base in 2013. Similar moves are expected to follow in Asia and South America, with Arroyo highlighting China and Brazil as possible locations.

Snapchat bags Olympic gold as more than half of its daily active UK users watched Live Stories for the Games More than half of the 10 million people who use Snapchat daily in the UK watched the Live Stories it produced in partnership with the BBC for the Rio Olympics, statistics seen by The Drum reveal. Given the content’s focus on the experiences around the sports rather than the actual sports themselves, the success offers a glimpse into how people want to consume such content on the mobile messaging app. This is especially true of younger audiences, of which four fifths of Snapchat’s user base in the UK are aged between 13 and 34. Despite arguably being Snapchat’s most important product, Live Stories is yet to set the sports world alight in the same way is has for music, fashion and other live events. However, for the Olympics it would appear fans took to the mix of big competition moments, wins, crowd reactions and athletes speaking directly into camera posts that were curated by Snapchat. That Snapchatters could contribute their own unique points of view to the same Story also seemed to drive views, as did moments like Team GB gymnasts Louis Smith and Max Whitlock talking directly into the camera to update fans and canoeists Deborah Kerr and Emily Lewis singing and joking together behind the scenes. Geofilters and Lenses that turned users into athletes like an equestrian or table tennis player were also created alongside Bitmojis, Stickers and Medal Count Geofilters which totalled up the gold, silver and bronze medals in different countries. All these points of view went into one UK Live Story each day of the event, with the Snaps taken by users in the crowd, athletes and those BBC teams on the ground. “Snapchat is where the audience is right now and the viewing numbers show the relevance of the social network, especially compared to time spent viewing TV,” explained André Wieneke, account manager at sports marketing agency We Play. “That being said, with the ongoing innovations across all platforms, there is a back and forth in the daily battle for people’s attention. This is why Instagram had a big dig at Snapchat, with the introduction of Instagram Stories while Facebook is still the biggest player in the game.” The appetite for Live Stories in the UK builds on global figures Snapchat released last month that revealed almost 50 million people had watched the Games on it in the first week alone, as broadcasters including the BBC and NBC used the app to help maximise reach of their own content. Such has been the success of these partnerships with the likes of Snapchat that NBCUniversal boss Steve Burke blamed them for its own poor ratings around exclusive coverage. Viewership numbers for the Opening Ceremony in the US were down 35 per cent from London 2012, marking the lowest total since Athens in 2014. It’s emblematic of the shifting media consumption habits, which Burke, in fairness, had been braced for, and paves the way for Snapchat to make a bigger play for the market, especially given its deals with Wimbledon, the NFL and UFC. “Snapchat, Instagram, Facebook and Periscope are all trying to fight for eyeballs and sport is one of the key ways they are doing this, said Mike Litman, chief executive of short form video analytics firm Burst Insights. Much of the marketing spotlight this year has focused on the Snapchat versus Facebook battle for video. And the Olympics was no different, though rather than compete outright for the same type of content, the tug of war seemed to play out between the more informal posts on Snapchat and the less personal but serious news and interviews on Facebook. “Snapchat was in some corners blamed for the lower TV ratings in this year’s Olympics than four years ago but in reality it was the presentation of the games that tried to turn it in to a time delayed advertiser wrapped event rather than just delivering the main events, live and in real time for people to enjoy in the moment," added Litman. "That's why I think Twitter, Snapchat and others did so well because people want to know about an event right when it's happening and not necessarily hours later. The social platforms all excel at being real time and in the moment whereas it feels like the TV broadcasters haven't quite got the hang of that just yet. Should this trend continue Snapchat can capitalise on being the rich media entertainment and information hub for sport and I’m sure they will be looking to tie up partnerships with the sports clubs in the UK and beyond to provide exclusive content around games and major events in 2017 and beyond.”

34 Sports Direct vows to 'become the Selfridges of Sport’ as it braces for 20% profits plunge Sports Direct has made the bold and bizarre claim that within the next four years shoppers will see it as ‘the Selfridges of Sport’, referring to the luxury department store. It seems like a bit of a leap for the company, which was recently exposed for its horrific working conditions in a government-backed investigation. The ambition was revealed in a presentation slide released this morning (7 September) ahead of the company’s AGM. The slide goes into little detail about how it plans to achieve this, saying only that it will be underpinned by a ‘360-degree review’ which will take place over the next 12-months. Within this review, it’s working practices and employment model will be looked at as well as corporate governance and its corporate reporting and communications strategy. Of the latter, Sports Direct has said that it is looking to be “very open”, another surprise given its lack of transparency on matters such as chief executive Mike Ashley’s brother in-law’s firm being used for its international deliveries. "We recognise that is important to be more transparent" said chairman Keith Hellawell (who, incidentally, tried to step down from the role ahead of the AGM but was told to stay on). More detail on the review and how it will attempt to transform the brand is expected later today. Despite many jibes already being made at its lofty ambition to emanate one of the UK's most well-known and respected retailers, the desire for Sports Direct to focus on rebuilding its brand is desperately needed. Rather than investing in marketing activity, it has simply hoped that a 'stack it high, sell it cheap' retail model would be enough of a draw for today's consumers. It's clear from the warning to the City this morning that this strategy has not been viable for some time. Sports Direct said it’s profits are expected fall by 20 per cent this year. It is likely to post underlying earnings of around £300m this financial year, down from £381m in 2015-16. Shares were down 10 per cent in early trading but stabilised around seven per cent lower. More to follow as the AGM progresses...

Desperados sprays graffiti on landmarks in vandalism-outlawed Singapore Desperados seemingly took a risky tactic in a campaign in Singapore by spraying artwork across major landscapes, but all was not as it seemed as it used LED light projections to simulate graffiti. The campaign, by SapientNitro - one of The Drum’s most innovative agencies in Singapore , took the brands tag line of #BreakNormal and turned it into an art hack by collaborating with local artists Zero, Tech and Brandon Tay. They chose the National Gallery, National Stadium and People’s Park Complex as the locations for the installations. Venus Teoh, head of marketing at Asia Pacific Breweries Singapore, said; “#BreakNormalArtHack epitomises the spirit of the Desperados brand – having adventurous experiences at the edge of the boundary, through a fresh and innovative perspective that sparks curiosity and interest in our consumers.” The light graffiti was created via special spray cans that were fitted with LED lights and infrared sensors that allowed it to project onto the surface in real-time. The artists used a special bike to cart the equipment round the locations. Claire Waring, executive creative director at SapientNitro Southeast Asia, said; “The Desperados Art Hack is a great example of a brand innovating to connect and contribute to the cultural landscape of Singapore. The collaboration between creative and technology has been fantastic and we can’t wait to see what the artists do with the #BreakNormal Bike next.”

Congressional officials told the Wall Street Journal that the remaining $1.3 billion was paid in two more installments delivered on Jan. 22 and Feb. 5. But don’t say Barack Obama is anti-American and anti-Israel. Don’t you dare say that.

Surprises at U. S. Open Quarterfinals Novak Djokovic won his first round match at the U. S. Open with a four-set match against Jerzy Janowicz, a tall (six-eight), brash, hot-tempered, big-server from Lodz, 25 years old. The top seed and world No. 1 showed good form and the injuries and “personal issues” of the summer used to explain the summer’s failure — losses at Wimbledon to American Sam Querrey and at Rio to Argentine Juan Martin Del Potro — were forgotten. Janowicz’s (bad knee) were rather brushed aside too, perhaps in order to dispel any ambiguities about the world No. 1’s win. In the second round, Jiri Vesely pulled out just before his meeting with Djokovic, whom he had upset last spring in the second round of the Monte Carlo Masters, claiming his arm was shot and needed rest. Vesely is a big, healthy-looking 23-year old fresh-faced farm boy type from the Czech Republic, a former juniors No. 1, but with arms you never know. At any rate, in the next round, Djokovic met the veteran Russian Mikhail Youzhny, a very tough number (Russians tend to be that, when they are not despairing intellectuals who drink tea in glasses). He quit after six games, saying his leg hurt. Djokovic played a full match against the rising British star Kyle Edmund in the fourth round, winning. Edmund, who was coming off a big upset of American John Isner, won seven games over three sets. Cat’s paw for the Russians, seeking revenge for the banning of their ice queen over doping? Not to mention the banning of practically all their athletes at Rio? And for the revelations of massive cheating at Soshi? The world’s mad. Serbs are not Russian pawns; but it is a mad year on practically every front, and you get dizzy with this stuff. In the second men’s quarter-finals match last night, Djokovic and Jo-Wilfred Tsonga played two great sets at Arthur Ashe Stadium, whose retractable roof had gone up in the afternoon as the rain started. Djokovic was fantastic with running cross court forehands and breathtaking passing shots, but he was up against one of France’s renewed musketeers. The mousquetaires were a team of greats who dominated tennis in the late 1920s and went on to careers in haberdashery and anti-Nazi resistance during the German occupation of France in the ’40s. The “nouveaux” (dixit the French sports press) musketeers emerged in the early oughts, but were beaten back by Spaniards and Serbs, as well as a masterful Swiss. Now they have a 22-year-old d’Artagnan to round up the aging veterans such as Tsonga and renew the quest for gloire. Tsonga could not meet his opponent for audacity and skill, which was curious because normally he is one of the most athletic performers on the Tour, but he was defending well with long shots and for a while it looked like it might be a ball game. At the end of the second set, however, he visibly slowed, lumbered to the net in an attempt to close points quickly – inviting passing shots –, and with the score 5-2 called a trainer. The trainer came, did his thing, the set was soon over, and two or three points into the next one, with the Frenchman on serve, he shook his head, signaled the ump, and hobbled off the court. Serbian’s luck? Or bad luck? It gets to a point when not playing can be more risky. But Djokovic looks fit and set. He meets another musketeer in the semis, Gael Monfils, who was Tuesday’s star. In a French quarter, he beat the young d’Artagnan from the North, near Dunkirk, Lucas Pouille. The latter, for sure, was worn out by his brilliant victory over Rafa Nadal in the previous round, which inspired the new-new musketeer buzz. But Monfils played three sets so dazzling one had to believe the immensely talented star from Guadeloupe, who for ten years has been falling short of his promise, is on the verge of the breakthrough to winning a major. In tennis you cannot speculate, backward or forward. Anything can happen, and usually does. A single point and you are out, out of the game and out of the match, a single match and you are out of the tournament. Nadal’s loss to Pouille in the fourth round is a case in point. A single flub in a fifth set tiebreak, after a fearless comeback against three match points, sealed the doom of that match for the great caballero. American men thought this was going to be the turnaround year, but several big hopes were dashed by the end of the first week. Notwithstanding our guys are doing better than they have in many years, the sting hurts. The great doubles team of Mike and Bob Bryan got broken on their last service game of the third set (doubles are best of three) by the Lopez & Lopez Spanish combo (pals, not brothers or cousins.) The twins seemed to be surging, maybe they were flummoxed by the rain delay at Louis Armstrong Stadium. It was the last match played on that hallowed ground until it is rebuilt with a retractable roof. Maybe while waiting under the drizzle, Bob and Mike – who are accomplished rock’n’roll musicians – got nostalgic about a place that was built as a music venue at the time of the historic New York World Fair, circa 1964 (full disclosure: better not trust me on this, but it was around then). The Bryans personify the all-business attitude of professional sports, but they are whimsical and funny, good talkers, and surely they felt a twinge… a little distraction… Marc Lopez, who won doubles gold with Rafa Nadal at Rio a few weeks ago, was on serve when play resumed; Feliciano Lopez stood at the net at the knock-out position. They eschewed music and nostalgia, gave no quarter. There is still Rajeev Ram, a fine American doubles player, who into the semis in mixed with Coco Vandeveghe, she of the bombastic style and bouncing, slightly abrasive personality, and cute as a beach bunny (big and strong though) and heiress to a great family. Rajeev at 31 has gone from being a fine singles player, with a classic serve and volley game, to a highly competitive doubles star (silver in the mixed, with Venus Williams, at the recent Olympics). As to the women – but that can wait. It would be politically incorrect, after all, to treat them as an afterthought. Which they most assuredly are not. The blonde cutie, Caroline Wozniacki, is having a wonderful run and indeed may run all the way to the final for a rematch with her best friend Serena Williams. She beat a Russo-Latvian named Anastasija Sevastova, who has eccentricities of a woman’s kind: unlike the men who drop out with sore arms and knees, she gets emotional. But she hung in this for a nice tournament, until meeting Danish retriever, as, if memory serves, the legendary sportswriter Bud Collins called Miss Wozniacki. Whatever the surprises, at Flushing Meadows, the sun is always up. Or just over the rainbow.

Charles Koch’s Radical Beliefs Charles Koch talked with Mike Rowe of “Dirty Jobs” fame. Their conversation is well worth listening to. It’s surprising to those on the Left that criminal justice reform is important to conservatives. In fact, in Texas, massive reforms have lead to less recidivism, less incarceration and drops in crime. That’s heartening. Conservatives are concerned about the individual. Each person with his or her gifts, used to their best ability, can make a positive difference. That’s the whole point of freedom, after all. My favorite quote from Mr. Koch: “People who lead happy, fulfilling lives are ones that develop their abilities and figure out how they can best contribute … and they’re rewarded for it and respected for it.”

Additional Chief Secretary Bhagwan Sahai, who was in the agriculture department before he was asked to go on forced leave, has been shifted as additional chief secretary (administrative reforms), an official said. Three other IAS officers were also transferred today, including C V Oak, who was transferred as Secretary of State Election Commission. The Mantralaya employees had last month staged a protest against Sahai and sought his suspension pending an inquiry, for allegedly not letting an official leave for home early. The official's son had later committed suicide. On August 11, Agriculture Department Joint Secretary Rajesh Ghadge sought permission from Sahai to leave for home early as his wife and son were having a fight and he wanted to sort out the matter. Sahai, reportedly, denied his consent. Later, Ghadge's son Avadhoot, a Class XII student, committed suicide. Sahai was sent on forced leave and an inquiry was instituted against him for not allowing his junior colleague to go home early on August 11, despite his son threatening to commit suicide. 44 Amit Shah visits Mumbai Ganesh pandals; Opposition needles Sena-BJP Amit Shah visited Ganesh pandals in Mumbai, but gave a miss to Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray's residence. File Pic The Opposition in Maharashtra today took a jibe at the BJP-Sena ruling alliance saying the former has "no respect" for its ally as Amit Shah visited Ganesh pandals in the city but did not meet Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray who resided just "10 minutes away". BJP national president Shah visited Ganesh pandals here during the ongoing 10-day Ganpati festival. On a day-long visit to Mumbai, Shah first visited a Ganpati mandal in Bandra, headed by BJP MLA and party's city chief Ashish Shelar, to have 'darshan' of Lord Ganesh. He then proceeded to 'Lalbaugcha Raja', which is the most famous public Ganpati idol put up in Lalbaug area of Central Mumbai. Later, Shah visited the 'Girgaoncha Raja' mandal, located in Girgaon area of South Mumbai. However, the Opposition Congress and NCP seized the opportunity to take a jibe at the ruling alliance, saying the BJP even "refused" to acknowledge that its ally Shiv Sena's chief Uddhav Thackeray too resides in Bandra. Congress MLA Nitesh Rane said it is high time Sena should withdraw support from the government on moral grounds. "In earlier days, whenever a Central leader used to visit Mumbai, be it L K Advaniji, Murli Manohar Joshiji or others who have now been confined to the 'Marg Darshak Mandal' of the BJP, they used to pay a visit to 'Matoshree' to meet late Balasaheb Thackeray," he said. "But the newer generation of leaders of the BJP seem to have lost all respect for its allies," he said. "Uddhavji too stays in Bandra, not more than 10 minutes away from the place Amit Shah visited. But he did not have the courtesy or the respect to meet his party's oldest ally. If the Sena has any self-respect left, they should do away with the BJP once and for all," Rane said. NCP leader Nawab Malik said the BJP should now declare itself a party which will not need support of allies in future as well. "The BJP seems to have become too big a party that does not need any ally for support. If it doesn't respect its oldest ally, what will it do to others? " Malik asked.

Stun belt causing Krejcir 'excruciating pain' Johannesburg - An uncomfortable stun belt and a lawyer’s allergies led to another postponement in the murder trial of Radovan Krejcir and four others in the Johannesburg High Court on Wednesday. Krejcir’s new lawyer, James Grant, told the court he was unhappy about the stun belt his client had to wear. A court official loosened it a bit before proceedings began. “It causes excruciating pain during the two hours travel to the prison and to court,” Grant told the court. He applied to Judge Mihloti Msimeki to have it removed. Msimeki quickly shut him down, saying he dealt with the same application in June, when he declined it. Krejcir, Bulgarian Lybohir Grigorov, Mfaniseni Memela, Nkanyiso Mafunda, and Siboniso Miya are on trial for the murder of Lebanese national Sam Issa. He was shot dead in his car at an intersection outside the Bedford Centre mall, Bedfordview, around 06:00 on Saturday, October 12, 2013. JP Marais, for Mafunda, told the court that the State, as promised, on Friday gave him a disc containing cellphone records. The disc was however faulty. “I couldn't open it and I also can't take a computer into prison when I consult my client,” Marais told the court. The cellphone records reportedly amounted to about 1800 pages and Marais said he had not had enough time to study them. He wanted the State to provide hard copies of those sections of cellphone records relevant to the trial, and access to the originals. The State argued it could not point out those sections of the records that might be used during the trial. Marais told the court that he only received the record of the bail application shortly before Msimeki entered the courtroom on Wednesday. It consisted of around 700 pages. Although all the accused had all previously been denied bail, he said he needed to study the records to take instructions from his client. “None of us are trial ready.” Miya's lawyer, Anneline van den Heever, said she was suffering from allergies. Her voice was hoarse. She did say that she was able to continue. The matter was postponed to September 20.

UK seeks to avoid Iraq mistakes in bid for Syria peace London - British Foreign Minister Boris Johnson on Wednesday called for the mistakes of the Iraq war to be avoided in finding a solution to the Syrian conflict, ahead of talks with the country's opposition. Johnson called for the removal from power of Syrian President Bashar Assad, arguing that it would be possible to avoid the turbulence which followed the ousting of Iraqi President Saddam Hussein in 2003. "Why should the same not happen again? Assad is not a strongman but a frighteningly weak leader who can never again hold his country together - not after the slaughter he has engaged in," the foreign minister wrote in The Times newspaper. Johnson accused Assad of "barbaric military tactics" in the ongoing conflict and criticised Russia's "seemingly indefensible conduct" of backing the Syrian leader. "The entire international community is committed, at least in principle, to getting rid of the Syrian dictator. Even the Russians have accepted that there must be political transition. "But then the Russians are also employing their military muscle to prevent him from losing and to keep him in power," Johnson wrote. The foreign minister's comments were published ahead of a meeting in London with Syria's opposition High Negotiations Commission, which was expected to unveil its framework for political transition on Wednesday. Johnson said the proposals would not seek to sweep away state structures: "That was [one of] the mistakes in Iraq, and it will not be repeated". He said plans would include a six-month negotiating phase between the regime and the opposition. The subsequent 18 months would see Syria governed by a transitional body, made up of opposition figures, current government representatives and members of civil society. The five-and-a-half-year conflict has forced more than 4.8 million people to flee Syria, according to figures from the United Nations refugee agency UNHCR.

Nicola Sturgeon calls on Theresa May to be more open on Brexit Nicola Sturgeon has challenged Theresa May to dispel the “cloud of secrecy” surrounding the UK government’s position on Brexit, as she warned that her own administration would not be reduced to “window dressing in a talking shop”. Giving her first full statement on the EU in the Holyrood chamber since the summer recess, Scotland’s first minister referred to comments May made earlier on Wednesday at prime minister’s questions. Sturgeon said: “I have been concerned by some of the comments made by the prime minister today, when she said she won’t have a running commentary on the negotiations. I accept that when negotiations are under way there are aspects that have to done behind closed doors. But I don’t think it is acceptable to have a cloud of secrecy hanging over the UK government’s negotiating position.” Citing the prime minister’s refusal to say whether the UK could remain in the EU single market after Brexit, during sustained questioning by the SNP’s Westminster leader, Angus Robertson, Sturgeon said: “I don’t think it’s acceptable to have a prime minister who is unwilling or unable to answer the simple question: should we remain in the single market or not? The UK government I suspect is using phraseology like that to mask the fact that it doesn’t yet have a clue what it’s seeking to achieve.” During the statement, the SNP leader said that if the UK was indeed heading for a “hard Brexit” outside the single market, this could compound the “extraordinary, self-inflicted blow to the UK’s competitiveness”. Sturgeon also repeated her condemnation of the UK government’s refusal to guarantee the status of EU citizens living in Britain since June’s vote, describing it as an “utter disgrace”. Asked whether representatives of the Scottish government would be fully engaged in Brexit negotiations, Sturgeon admitted: “The honest answer is that that remains to be seen. That was the commitment we were given.” However, she warned Downing Street that the Scottish government “will not be window dressing in a talking shop” of negotiations, and went on to describe her efforts to seek common cause with other parties in Holyrood, devolved administrations across the UK and indeed UK government ministers who favoured maintaining full access to the EU’s single market in goods and services. Sturgeon also noted the reported comment from an aide to Jeremy Corbyn earlier on Wednesday, who suggested that the Labour leader wished to leave what he called the “damaging” single market, saying: “I certainly hope that that is not the position of the Scottish Labour party.” The Scottish Labour leader, Kezia Dugdale, responded that Scottish Labour remained “absolutely committed to the EU and single market and supportive of SNP efforts to retain both”. Sturgeon announced on Tuesday, as part of her programme for government over the coming year, a consultation on a draft referendum bill “so that it is ready for immediate introduction if we conclude that independence is the best or only way to protect Scotland’s interests”. On Wednesday, at the conclusion of her EU statement, she referred to the subject once again, saying that her determination to examine every option to protect Scotland’s interests “ must include the option to consider independence if it becomes clear that our interests cannot be protected within the UK”. “To give up the right to even consider that option would be to accept that we are at the mercy of Westminster decisions no matter how damaging or destructive they are to our society, our economy and our place in the world. That is not a position anyone with Scotland’s best interests at heart should ever be prepared to accept.”

Coffee 80 times stronger than espresso could keep you up for 18 hours ADELAIDE, Australia – How many cups of coffee does it take to get you going in the morning? If the answer is many, the invention of a turbo-powered superbrew that is so strong it comes with a health warning might put your habit into perspective. A cafe in Adelaide, Australia, is serving the “Asskicker,” a concoction of four espresso shots, two different strengths of cold drip and milk that its inventor says contains 80 times the amount of caffeine of a standard shot. The drink, designed to be sipped slowly over three to four hours, promises to keep coffee lovers buzzing for up to 18 hours. While a normal espresso, as defined by the US Department of Agriculture, packs around 63 milligrams of caffeine, this drink has 5 grams, according to its creator. The US Food and Drug Administration and USDA note that 400 milligrams is the limit not generally associated with dangerous, negative effects. Turbo coffee Steve Benington, owner of Viscous Coffee, developed the drink for a local emergency room nurse who needed something to keep her going during unexpected night shifts. “We had to tone it down a bit because it kept her up for a total of three days,” said Benington, adding that the nurse sipped it over two days. The barista, who opened his cafe a year and a half ago after a career in the Australian Navy, said the turbo coffee has become very popular in recent weeks. However, he actively discourages customers interested only in a gimmick, and advertises it with a warning for those with high blood pressure or heart conditions. “I have a quite detailed talk with people before they actually purchase one. If I can talk someone out of it, they’re not ready for the drink,” said Benington. Warning signs of coffee overdose include shakes and sweats, dilated pupils, stammering over your words, vertigo and nausea. “If you keep going, those symptoms will get worse,” said the coffee-loving business owner. “If you stay within the guidelines, you’re fine.” The Asskicker experience will set you back around $12 ($16 AUD) for a 16 ounce cup. World’s favorite drug Occurring naturally in coffee beans, tea leaves and cacao, caffeine is the most commonly used drug in the world. The average amount of caffeine consumed by adults is 300 milligrams per day, according to a 2012 FDA report (PDF). Caffeine is a bitter white alkaloid that stimulates the central nervous system — the brain, spinal cord and nerves — to make us feel more awake. While studies have not proven (PDF) that caffeine produces significant life- threatening health risks such as cancer or heart disease, excess consumption can lead to increased blood pressure, gastrointestinal problems and raised cholesterol. Though rare, there have been some deaths linked to caffeine. A 14-year-old with a heart condition died after drinking two energy drinks in 24 hours. A 19-year-old overdosed on a dozen caffeine pills, and in another case, a high school wrestler from Ohio died after consuming powdered caffeine — a highly concentrated form that the FDA has issued strong warnings about. Withdrawal symptoms People with pre-existing heart conditions, as well as children and pregnant women, are advised to drink less caffeine — but how much is too much varies significantly from person to person, according to Maggie Sweeney, a Johns Hopkins University researcher who studies caffeine. “That’s certainly an awful lot of caffeine,” Sweeney said of the brew’s 5 grams. “With much lower doses of caffeine you see the effects of caffeine intoxication. Depending on an individual’s sensitivity and tolerance, you would expect they might experience some negative side effects upwards of 250 milligrams.” While differing levels of tolerance make it difficult to name a lethal dose, Sweeney said she believes “about 10 grams” could kill someone, twice the caffeine content of the Asskicker. Sweeney’s program works with people whose caffeine dependencies are interfering with their day to day life, most of whom consume “less than 1,000 milligrams a day.” Symptoms can range from restlessness and insomnia to irregular heartbeat in severe cases. “We’ve seen people who have missed work because of the severity of their caffeine withdrawal, people who have gotten into arguments with friends and family about their caffeine use,” she said. The researcher said she believes genetics play a role in the rate at which our bodies process the stimulant, a factor still being investigated. “Caffeine isn’t necessarily a bad thing; there’s some evidence it can have health benefits, such as protection from Parkinson’s disease,” said Sweeney. “But for a subset of individuals — and we’re trying to determine exactly how many — their dependence on caffeine has a negative impact.” A couple of cups a day Other experts on the drug are convinced of its health benefits. Harvard Medical School’s Dr. Sanjiv Chopra’s book, “The Big 5,” lists drinking coffee as one of five things you can do to live a longer and healthier life. “People who drink coffee have a lower risk of five cancers: liver, prostate, colon, endometrial and skin cancer. It protects against cirrhosis (liver disease), Parkinson’s, cognitive decline, Type II diabetes,” said Chopra. A 2012 study published in the New England Journal of Medicine found that men and women who drank more than three cups of coffee a day had a 10% lower risk of death from heart disease, respiratory illness, stroke, injuries or accidents, diabetes and infections. But even the coffee evangelist believes the Asskicker is a dose too far. “I would be very wary of consuming it,” said Chopra. “That’s a huge caffeine load.” “What I recommend is two to four cups [a day]. If you can drink them regularly it’s better for the liver.”

Mexican cabinet official out after Donald Trump visit The circumstances surrounding Videgaray's exit were not immediately clear. But a Mexican government official and a source close to the Mexican government both told CNN previously that the idea to extend invitations for Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton to meet with Peña Nieto came from the Finance Ministry. Trump and Peña Nieto met last week. Trump's whirlwind visit to Mexico and private meeting with Peña Nieto gave the real estate mogul the visual of meeting with a foreign leader. Yet the trip later devolved into finger-pointing after Peña Nieto and Trump delivered contradicting accounts of the closed-door sit-down. Both leaders are unpopular in Mexico. Trump has pledged to build a wall along the US-Mexico border and force the southern neighbor to pay for it. Peña Nieto has said unequivocally that his country will not pay for it. Mexico invited Trump to show that it could work with the Republican nominee if he were to win, according to the source close to the government. Yet the Foreign Ministry was not aware of the invitations to Trump and Clinton, said the Mexican government official.

Isabelle Dinoire, first face transplant patient, dies at 49 A statement released by Amiens Hospital, which performed the ground- breaking procedure in November 2005, said Dinoire died on April 22, 2016 "following a long illness. " She was 49 years old. The delay in announcing her death was explained in the hospital statement. "In accordance with the will of her relatives, no obituary was published in the press in order to protect their legitimate privacy at that painful time," the statement said. Though the hospital did not provide any details on the cause of Dinoire's death, French media reported she succumbed to complications from her most recent operation. Dinoire suffered a rejection of the transplants last winter and lost part of the use of her lips, Le Figaro , a prominent French newspaper reported Tuesday. The heavy anti-rejection treatments she had to take contributed to the occurrence of two cancers, according Le Figaro. Surgeons performed the operation when Dinoire was 38 years old, after her face was mauled by her dog. The medical marvel created a wave of controversy at the time, with some questioning the ethics of transplanting a face before attempting reconstructive surgery. French surgeons Dr. Jean-Michel Dubernard and Dr. Bernard Devauchelle decided to carry out the operation to stitch on a nose, chin and mouth from a brain-dead donor, and opted out of the more traditional reconstructive surgery route. Dinoire was given the lower part of a face taken from a woman who had committed suicide. A year after having the procedure, Dinoire declared: "It may be someone else's face, but when I look in the mirror, I see me. " The surgery paved the way for other transplants involving varying combinations of facial parts performed in six other countries, including the United States.

Three rashers of bacon a day 'raises the risk of dying from heart disease by 25%' Eating three rashers of bacon a day raises the risk of dying from heart disease by almost a quarter, a new study shows. Only a small amount of red meat can cause cancer, heart disease and diabetes - with processed meat the most dangerous, say scientists. Just 50g a day - about two slices of ham or three rashers of bacon - raises the risk of dying from cardiovascular disease by 24 percent. It also makes death from cancer eight per cent more likely - increasing the risk of pancreatic, bowel, breast and prostate tumours by 19 per cent, 18 per cent, nine per cent and four per cent respectively. It also raises the risk of diabetes by 32 per cent, according to the findings published in the Journal of Internal Medicine. Meanwhile twice as much unprocessed red meat - 100 g a day raised the risk of advanced prostate cancer and bowel cancer by 19 per cent and 17 per cent respectively, death from cardiovascular disease by 15 per cent and stroke and breast cancer by 11 per cent each. The review of previous research provides a comprehensive summary of the dangers of eating red meat which includes beef, veal, pork, lamb and mutton and processed varieties such as ham, sausages, bacon, frankfurters and salami. Professor Alicja Wolk of the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm said: 'Overall it's plausible to conclude - taking into account the available scientific evidence - that high consumption of red meat and especially processed meat is associated with the increased risk of several major chronic diseases and preterm mortality. 'Moreover the production of red meat also involves an environmental burden. 'Therefore some European countries have already integrated these two issues, human health and the 'health of the planet', into new national dietary guidelines and recommended limiting the consumption of red meat.' Processed meat undergoes treatment including curing, smoking, salting or the use of chemical preservatives and additives to improve its shelf life or taste which could be behind its increased risk. Professor Wolk said: 'During recent decades, consumption of red meat has been increasing globally, especially in developing countries. 'At the same time, there has been growing evidence that high consumption of red meat, especially of processed meat, may be associated with an increased risk of several major chronic diseases. 'Here, a comprehensive summary is provided of the accumulated evidence based on prospective cohort studies regarding the potential adverse health effects of red meat consumption on major chronic diseases, such as diabetes, coronary heart disease, heart failure, stroke and cancer at several sites, and mortality. 'Risk estimates from pooled analyses and meta-analyses are presented together with recently published findings.' 'The evidence-based integrated message is that it is plausible to conclude that high consumption of red meat, and especially processed meat, is associated with an increased risk of several major chronic diseases and preterm mortality.'

9/11 kids to terrorists: 'You lose' To the terrorists, they say, "You lose. " "We're still here," says Patrick Hannaford, who was 2 years old when his father, Kevin Hannaford, 32, was killed on the 105th floor of the World Trade Center's north tower, where he worked for Cantor Fitzgerald. "We've rebuilt, and we're stronger now than we were then. It's just a good feeling to know they failed. " "All of us are sitting here -- successful, intelligent," says Jessica Waring, 29, who lost her father, James Waring, 49, on the second day of her freshman year of high school. "The fact that we could rise above it shows the type of people we are. Al Qaeda and now ISIS, they're not going to beat us. " There were 3,051 children under the age of 18 who lost a parent on 9/11. Ten of them -- ages 14 to 29 -- gathered on the 10th floor of 7 World Trade Center recently to share their stories in a Town Hall with CNN's Brooke Baldwin. They spoke of their loss and of lessons learned. Of what it has been like to come of age in the age of terror. All lost their fathers. Five of the 10 have no memory of them. Two -- Kevin Hannaford and Rodney Wotton -- were born after 9/11. They exude youthful optimism mixed with tremendous maturity. They don't bear hate. Far from it. The building that once stood where they've gathered collapsed the afternoon of that fateful day, collateral damage from the towers being felled. The new building that has taken its place personifies them -- having risen from the ashes, rebuilt after years of hard work, polished and impressive. The room overlooks the 9/11 Memorial, with its footprint waterfalls and quiet space. Hallowed ground. Their fathers' graves. "A lot of our parents' bodies weren't found after 9/11, so that could be literally where our fathers' bodies lay to this day. It is a memorial, and it is our grave," says Caroline Tumulty-Ollemar, 15. When she goes to the site, she finds her father's name inscribed in the bronze parapet surrounding the memorial pool where the south tower once stood. Lance Richard Tumulty was the football captain of his high school team, a 32-year-old manager for Euro Brokers Inc., who worked on the 84th floor. She reaches out, runs her fingers across the letters. "I put my hand on his name and talk to him," she says. "I just like to catch up and let him know how I'm doing, and let him see that what has happened to him hasn't held me back. " Sometimes, he reaches back. One night this summer, she looked at her father's photograph in her room and felt something brush against her shoulder. "Not in a creepy way," she says, crying, "but in a way that he was there and he was saying, 'You're going to be OK.' "It was just like him putting his hand on my shoulder and saying, 'I'm so proud of you.'" They are a tight-knit crew, these 10. Being with each other brings comfort. Kevin Parks, 29, mentors Rodney Wotton, 14. He takes him to ball games and dinners, and lends support when the pain becomes overwhelming. Rodney is the same age now that Kevin was when he lost his dad. Born eight days after the attack, Rodney initially resisted emotional support when his mother suggested they seek it out. He was afraid that being around others "would kind of bring back memories of how I didn't have a dad. " But then the two met at a gathering of Tuesday's Children, an organization created to help the children who lost a parent on 9/11. And now, sitting beside Kevin at the Town Hall, Rodney talks of the transformative power of their relationship. "He's just been the father figure in my life since I never did meet my dad. " Surprised by the admission, Kevin responds, "It means a lot hearing that. I've always said I get more out of the relationship than he does. " Adds Jessica Waring, "With people who have gone through what you've been through, it's an unspoken thing. You're instantly friends. " Some have been confronted by conspiracy theorists. They were told that 9/11 didn't happen. That the planes didn't hit the towers. "I just want to look at them and go, 'Then, where did my father go?'" says Tumulty-Ollemar. These 10 symbolize resilience. They brush off negativity. Maintain focus. from the depths of despair. That's something 21-year-old Austin Vukosa knows well. He was 6 when his father, Alfred Vukosa, 37, was killed. One of the few memories he recalls is playing catch in the park, his dad snagging the baseball with his bare hands. In the months after the attacks, he went to his mother with a plan to join his father: He wanted to slit his wrists. "I was telling my mom I wanted to be in the same place my dad was -- just to be with him," he confides. "Obviously, looking back, it sounds kind of frightening. " A recent graduate of the University of Notre Dame, he is honoring his father by following in his footsteps. In August, he completed his first month of work at Cantor Fitzgerald, where his father worked as an information technology specialist. Cantor was hit especially hard, losing 658 of its 960 employees on 9/11. "Just to follow his footsteps at the same company has been a big sense of accomplishment for me," he says. Walking through the doors on that first day was "definitely surreal. " "It drew me a little closer to him. " To be close to Dad is something they all yearn for. Jessica Waring's father was a diehard Green Bay Packers fan. Recently, when she was walking down the street in Manhattan and thinking about him, she looked up to see somebody wearing a Packers jersey. The time on her phone read 9:11. It gave her chills. That kind of thing happens all the time. Nicole Pila, 17, often listens to a recording of her father in his final moments. James Gartenberg, a 35-year-old real estate broker in the north tower, spoke with WABC news anchors by phone shortly after the building was hit. He was on the 86th floor on the east side of the building, trapped with one other person. He described the windows blowing out from the inside when the plane struck. "Debris has fallen around us," he says. "Part of the core of the building is blown out. "If I'm on the air, I want to tell anyone who has a loved one in the building, the situation is under control for the moment and the danger has not increased. So, please, all family members take it easy. " Says Nicole: "In his last moments, he was putting others before himself. " The recording brings him back to her. "It's the last thing I have left of him. " Juliette Scauso, 19, is among the few who has an artifact from that day. Dennis Scauso, 46, was one of 343 firefighters killed on 9/11. His crushed helmet was recovered. And it comes with a remarkable story. Juliette's mother and other widows of 9/11 had gone to a psychic in February 2002 searching for answers. They were desperate for any sign, any clue of their loved ones. The psychic looked at her and said she could see her husband's badge number as clear as day. Juliette's mother made phone calls and eventually learned, yes, there was an item with Dennis Scauso's badge number. In the hectic fray of search and recovery, nobody had informed the family of the discovery. "The helmet is crushed to about this big," Juliette says, holding her thumb and finger about 2 inches apart. "The entire thing. It's unrecognizable. But the badge number, which is made out of a sticker, is perfectly intact. " No other remains of her father were ever recovered. Her mom keeps the helmet wrapped in plastic in her bedroom. "It's bittersweet because it was something of his -- something that was with him during his last moments. " That feeling of emptiness, of not being able to give their fathers a proper burial, is omnipresent. More than 40%of the 9/11 families never received their loved one's remains. For Sal Pepe, a formal goodbye to his namesake came 10 years after the attacks. His father, Salvatore Pepe, 45, worked on the 97th floor of the north tower as an assistant vice president for technology at Marsh & McLennan. In 2011, his family bought a crate and filled it with letters, photographs and other special keepsakes for burial. They wrote messages on white balloons and released them at the ceremony. His mother had a hard time letting go of her balloon. Sal was 11 at the time. The young boy told his mother it was OK to let go -- that his father would always be with them. He kept himself from crying that day "to be strong for my mom. " "I'm dedicating most of my life to making him proud," says Sal, now 16. These children grew up too fast. Love your friends and family now, they advise -- and don't be shy about telling them so. Because life can end in a nanosecond. Kevin Parks ran his first Boston Marathon in 2013. He finished the race and was celebrating with friends and family at a rooftop bar when the bombs went off. The friend next to him was the same guy who was next to him in math class on 9/11. "It was weird, almost déjà vu," Kevin says. "The unfortunate part is tragedies of different magnitudes happen all the time. I think the easy default emotion is anger and frustration, and that's natural. I'd prefer people react with a more positive tone... to figure out a way to make the most of a terrible situation. " Patrick and Kevin Hannaford honor their dad by helping others. With their mother, they formed the Kevin J. Hannaford Sr. Foundation, a charity that helps pay the tuition of children who have lost a parent in their hometown of Basking Ridge, New Jersey. The charity's main fundraising event has always been blessed with perfect weather. The running family joke, they say, is that it's their dad's "signature on the day. " "We feel him a lot that day," Patrick says. Patrick was 2 on 9/11 and was thrust into the role of consoling his pregnant mom and helping to raise his brother Kevin, born four months later. "He stepped up to be my dad," Kevin says. With their short-cropped blond hair and bright smiles, they are spitting images of their father. One photograph of their dad in swim trunks as a boy looks so much like the young Kevin that when people see it, they say, "That's a great photograph of you. " "It's actually my dad," he responds. "It makes me feel good," he says. With a big grin, he notes his father was handsome, "so hopefully I can be the same way when I'm older. " This group knows loss, undoubtedly. They also know love. If they could ask their fathers one last question, what would it be? Nicole Pila immediately pipes up: "Are you proud of me? " "I would say the same thing," adds Austin Vukosa. "I would want to know if he's proud. " Jessica Waring: "Yeah, I think I'd want to know the same thing, too. " Patrick Hannaford pauses. "I don't know. There's a lot to ask, so I'm not sure what I'd pick. " His younger brother, Kevin, says he'd ask, "How are you? " "I've never met him. There would be a lot. I could write a book. " Caroline Tumulty-Ollemar says she'd want to know "if he was satisfied with the time he got here. " "I think I'd want to know," says Sal Pepe, "if he had a funny memory or a funny story that he could share. " Juliette Scauso: "I would ask if he was proud of not only me, but who my family has grown into without him there. " "I'd ask him to tell me some of the stories I was too young to know back then," says Kevin Parks. The last one to reveal his question is Rodney Wotton. "I would ask if there were ways to remember him more, like if he's proud of the way we're keeping him in our life. " These children will never forget. And they don't want the world to forget either.

Human traffickers smuggled SEVENTEEN adult and child migrants in this minivan - and ordered them to defecate INSIDE the vehicle rather than risk stopping Human traffickers were caught trying to smuggle 17 migrants across the border by packing them into a mini van. The migrants were not allowed to leave the vehicle during the trip from the Romanian - Hungarian border area to Vienna. They were even ordered to defecate inside the vehicle if they needed to relieve themselves. The Mercedes Vito van was spotted by a car driver on the A4 motorway in Schwechat, in the south-east of the Austrian capital and stopped by police. Officers also pulled over a Fiat Punto which drove ahead of the minivan to scout out the route. In the Vito, a 19-year-old human trafficker from Egypt was found along with 17 migrants from Syria and Afghanistan, which included children and a baby. Officials found the migrants kneeling and squatting on the floor of the van. They had been squeezed together in a tight area of only 50sq feet and police had to administer first aid for some of the exhausted migrants. It was also reported the parents of an eight-month-old baby girl were forced to give her sedatives, as the criminals were afraid her screams could jeopardise the smuggling operation. Migrants paid the traffickers 5,000 euros each, while the smuggling of a child cost 2,500 euros. The trip would have earned the criminals a total of €75,000. The Fiat Punto was driven by two Syrian people smugglers aged 20 and 37. The three men were arrested on suspicion of human trafficking and were taken to a prison in Korneuburg while they await trial. Last year, in a case that shocked the world, 71 migrants were found rotting in an abandoned truck on an Austrian motorway. The victims included eight women and four children. Many of the bodies had decomposed, suggesting they had been dead for several days in the back of the air-tight refrigerated lorry that usually carried frozen chicken.

Egyptian court orders release of street performers CAIRO (AP) — An Egyptian court on Wednesday ordered the conditional release of four members of a satirical street performance group whose selfie-style video clips mocked President Abdel-Fattah el- Sissi, according to two defense lawyers. Lawyers Mahmoud Othman and Ahmed Othman told The Associated Press that the release order did not mean that the case has been dropped, and said prosecutors could still appeal the release. The lawyers said the judge has ordered their release on condition that the four report to local police stations daily. The performers, whose group is called "Street Children," were arrested in May and faced several charges, including inciting terror attacks, street protests and attempting to overthrow the government. Clips by the group released on social media networks shortly before their arrest were entitled "El-Sissi, my president, made things worse," and "Leave" — a chant that was popular during the 2011 uprising that forced autocrat Hosni Mubarak to step down. Other clips mocked the president's habit of ending speeches with "Long live Egypt! " and his reference in an address earlier this year to advice by his late mother "never to covet what belongs to others. " Street Children is part of a street-based art, music and graffiti movement born out of the 2011 uprising and fueled by liberal youths opposed to the rule of either Islamists or the military. Authorities in recent months have sought to clamp down on the movement, closing a popular arts center in downtown Cairo and cancelling some street art festivals. The arrest of members of Street Children took place amid a wider crackdown on dissent over the past three years. Thousands of people, mainly Islamists but also leading secular activists, have been jailed, and all unauthorized protests have been banned.

Q&A: Rihanna on new fashion line, confidence and more NEW YORK (AP) — Rihanna says if the Addams Family worked out in the gym, they would sport her new collection for Puma. The singer's autumn/winter 2016 Fenty Puma by Rihanna line was launched Tuesday. The edgy collection of mostly black-and-white ensembles includes loose sweaters and oversized pants, maxi dresses, sneakers, slippers and sneaker heels. She called the clothes and items — wearable at the gym or not — "kind of haunting. " "I kind of imagined if the Addams Family was working out, this is what they would be wearing," Rihanna said in an interview with The Associated Press. "This collection is kind of dark, but very oversized and long, everything is extra and I love it," she said. "It's something I definitely wear all the time and you either have to be into it or not. " She launched the line at pop-up shops at Foot Locker and Bergdorf Goodman in New York, where her feverish fans awaited the pop star's arrival. She wore Puma head-to-toe, including white thigh-high boots, a long black skirt and a track jacket. Rihanna, 28, talked about the new line and how Japanese street culture inspired her style. AP: Did you listen to music while designing this line? Rihanna: I always listen to music no matter what I'm doing. Music is definitely always something that drives the mood and creating and helps you lock that in and escape to a whole other world, but I won't say any of these pieces were specific to certain songs or album — they just came from a feeling. I already knew what I wanted and I knew what I wanted to see and the direction, but to actually now apply that to silhouettes and things that had to still come back to athleticism, I had such a thrill with that challenge. AP: What was it like designing a line versus shopping for yourself? Rihanna: Oh my gosh, big difference! When you're shopping, too, you feel like you're designing as you're shopping. You're like, 'I love this, but I wish it was shorter or I wish it was purple. I wish it was a different fabric,' you know. It starts there, but then when you have to start from scratch, it really comes with an idea first, and then... you want to tweak and then you come up with something else and you want to add to it or change. It's fun. It's like an ocean — you can do whatever. It's so, it's a big canvas and Puma definitely let me have a lot of freedom creatively so I was lucky with that. AP: You said this line was inspired by Japanese street culture. Do you remember your first trip to Japan? What was that like? Rihanna: Supertrippy. I felt like I was on a whole other planet. I felt like I was the only person of my kind there. It was so weird. And their fashion, I felt like I was watching a hip-hop music video, I remember. The guys all wanted to be like supergangster and oversized this, oversized that; they were so cool. But the girls, they all walked around in thigh-high boots and tiny shorts, supercute outfits that I knew came from hip- hop culture. It was really cool actually to see that. Actually the worst part about that trip was none of the shoes could fit me. I have big feet and they don't. They stop at like a size six and that's it. But it was fun. And I've always been inspired since that day; I've always been inspired by Japanese style. AP: You've always been bold and confident with your style, and people always say they like Rihanna "because she's so real. " Have you always been confident? Rihanna: I think... I've always been shy. AP: Really? Rihanna: Yes. Yes. And still you wouldn't believe, but still I get shy and awkward and (have) stage fright. Even when I was coming here, I was at Bergdorf's earlier, I had this fluttering in my stomach 'cause it's like a stage even though it wasn't. ... I've always been that way, but... when you realize that nothing is wrong, even if it's awkward it's not wrong ... you kind of just are OK. Like you know it might be awkward for people or people might not understand it, but you're fine. I wouldn't change anything. I have to stay the same. AP: They've been playing your songs and the fans have been singing along. What's it like to have them here? Rihanna: That is what it's all about. I couldn't come to the shop and be by myself... when they show up I mean that, that lets me know I'm doing something right and lets me know that they're sincerely interested and enjoy what I do. And that's the reward. ___ Online: http://us.puma.com/en_US/collections/collaborations/puma-by- rihanna

Syria: While bombs fall, tea and sympathy at talks Britain's Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson is hosting talks between key players in the Syrian civil war, which has been raging for five years, leaving more than 250,000 people dead, 6.6 million more internally displaced , and forcing almost 5 million to flee the country. Who is there? And who isn't? The High Negotiations Committee (HNC), an internationally-backed umbrella group which represents Syria's wide-ranging opposition, from politicians -- including former prime minister Dr. Riyad Hijab -- to many of the more moderate rebel groups on the ground in Syria, including the Free Syrian Army. They will be joined by Foreign Ministers and representatives from France, Italy, the US, Britain, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. US Secretary of State John Kerry will join the talks via videolink from Asia. But -- and it's a big but -- nobody from the Assad regime, Russia, or its other allies is present at the talks. ISIS, Jabhat Fateh al-Sham, Hezbollah and some of the other Islamic militant groups fighting in Syria are not represented either. READ MORE: Who's fighting who in Syria? So what's the point? These are not intended as peace talks, per se -- the HNC is laying out a 25- page plan that explains its vision of the way forward for Syria: "For emancipation from dictatorship, the establishment of a new social contract ... building a political system that protects freedoms, safeguards individual rights, and that is founded upon the principles of liberty, equality, citizenship, and justice. " It's a three phase plan: first, negotiations that should take six months, then a transition period and then an implementation period. If this all sounds familiar that's because it's exactly what the UN Security Council laid out in December last year, and which has since stalled. Right at the top of the list is the very, very clear condition that -- and these are the HNC's words -- "Bashar al-Assad and his clique, who committed heinous crimes against the Syrian people," must leave power. READ MORE: Syria talks -- what the diplomats really think Will it make any difference? The idea is that this is not a final blueprint for peace, but a starting point for negotiations, when the day comes and everyone gets around the table. But that day is a long way off at this point. The fly in the ointment is that Russia shows no intention of telling al- Assad to go. The Foreign Ministers are not endorsing the HNC vision -- they are encouraging it. Essentially what they're doing is giving it a platform for the world to hear, but that doesn't translate to putting pressure on Russia. The HNC says this is not enough, and that the US, the UK and others need to do more to get Russia to comply with the UN agreement (UNSC Res 2254) on Syria. Are these talks going to inch this situation forward, to stop more attacks like the ones we've seen in recent days? That really is very, very unlikely. READ MORE: 'Gaps of trust' hamper Syria deal with Russia: Obama Will Russia back peace talks? At this point, we simply don't know. In the international community, there is a huge amount of frustration that the killing is still going on in Syria. The general agreement is that, ultimately, there is no military solution, and that Russia cannot prosper from a never- ending conflict in Syria. The Assad regime does not have enough troops to impose his will across the whole country, and the longer Russian troops are embroiled in the fighting, the higher the number of casualties they suffer and the more unpopular the conflict becomes at home. The Western assessment is that ultimately, Russia will find terms that are favorable for the people it supports in Syria -- al-Assad and his government -- to come to some sort of a peace deal. READ MORE: Why can't the US and Russia agree on Syria? So will the killing stop soon? The evidence on the ground right now is that Assad, Russia and Iran want to continue to push their military advantage: they've had the momentum and they're trying again to squeeze the rebels out of Aleppo. It is thought that -- recognizing Assad cannot reunite a deeply fractured Syria -- they want to take control of the city to give Assad a "rump state" which he could continue to control. While that battle -- fought with airstrikes, barrel bombs and chemical weapons -- continues, so will the deaths. And while Assad and his Russian allies continue to focus on Aleppo, they are taking their eye off the ball when it comes to fighting ISIS and other Islamist militant groups. READ MORE: What parents in Aleppo tell kids about war It's unclear what their next tactical move would be, but for the international community the assessment has to be that, eventually, Russia will want to call for peace.

69 'Our actions helped!' Mark Carney rejects charge he 'over-egged' dire warnings about Brexit by claiming the Bank's plans headed off a recession Mark Carney today denied claims he 'over-egged' dire warnings about Brexit after positive economic figures emerged after the vote. He said he was 'comfortable' with the Bank's warnings ahead of the vote. But Mr Carney told the committee the Bank took 'timely, comprehensive and concrete' action, which acted to 'support, cushion and help the economy to adjust'. Last month's rate cut to a new historic low of 0.25 per cent has helped to support house prices and the wider economy, he said. 'There has been quite a considerable improvement in mortgage borrowing costs and we are seeing pass through of our actions,' he said. Mr Rees-Mogg said if the Bank knew its actions would be so effective, it 'wouldn't need the dire warnings' made ahead of the referendum. Mr Rees-Mogg has previously accused Mr Carney of peddling Treasury 'propaganda' and called for his resignation after the Governor warned before the referendum a Brexit vote could cause a technical recession. Mr Carney told the committee: 'In light of all the events, I'm absolutely serene about the judgements made by the Monetary Policy Committee and Financial Policy Committee.' He added it was 'welcome that there has been a rebound' and confirmed the chances of a technical recession had gone down since the Bank's economy-boosting moves last month. Labour MP Rachel Reeves raised concerns that the majority of lenders had yet to pass on the full cut in rates. Mr Carney reassured the Bank expected 'virtually' all the rate cut to be passed on to borrowers in the next few months. The MPC was 'clear-eyed' about the risks around Brexit, Mr Carney said. He denied having given 'dire' warnings, noting that the Bank's own economic forecasts at the time were higher than consensus estimates. 'To be clear, if you want to take private sector forecasts, they were more pessimistic than the Bank of England.' Mr Carney said the Bank's estimates are still higher than revised estimates by Morgan Stanley or JPMorgan. Both US lenders upgraded their UK economic forecasts this week after data showed the UK service sector swung back to growth in August. He said the Bank was 'very clear' in both its inflation report and the accompanying press conference, that it expected private economic surveys to bounce back in the months following the referendum. Mr Carney stressed the stimulus package was an aid to those economic indicators, which 'improved considerably' since the beginning of August. 'It has helped to reinforce other factors that have been supporting confidence.' Mr Carney explained the Bank's actions were made in an effort 'to help make the leaving of the EU a success as quickly as possible'. 'The fact is that this financial system, under the oversight of the Bank of England , sailed through what was a surprise to the vast majority of financial market participants.'

Mark Warburton is still 'two or three' years away from making Rangers title challengers again, says Ally McCoist Ally McCoist believes Mark Warburton is still 'two or three' years from restoring Rangers to former glories, but knows patience will be in short supply. McCoist was manager when the Govan club entered administration and then liquidation in 2012 before re-emerging in the bottom tier of Scottish football. After taking the Light Blues through two leagues, the former Rangers striker, who played during the club's nine-in-a-row era, was put on gardening leave in December 2014 after handing in his notice before subsequently leaving the club. After Stuart McCall failed to take Rangers into the Ladbrokes Premiership via the play- offs, Warburton was appointed, winning the Championship at the first time of asking, and is this week preparing for the first Old Firm league game in four years at Celtic Park on Saturday. McCoist, speaking in Glasgow where was helping publicise The Scottish Qualification Authority's (SQA) endorsement of skills, education and training firm, Spohrt, has watched Rangers' unconvincing start to the season - they are one point behind league leaders Celtic having played a game more - and offered his assessment. He said: 'They have been fine. I was never of the opinion that Rangers were going to come in and set the place on fire and win the league by some considerable distance. 'The building process is still quietly in operation. I think it is still going to be two or three years. What we are seeing from Rangers at this moment is what I expected it to be. 'There will be games where things don't go their way. Obviously the standard of opposition is better than it has been in the last few years so they are finding their feet. 'There has been some good performances, one or two average performances but all in all, Rangers are okay at the moment. I know what Rangers fans and Celtic fans are like. 'As fanatical as they are in their support of the team, they are not the most patient and some of them perhaps are not the most realistic. 'Rangers and indeed Celtic have improvement in them, particularly Rangers, if they want to challenge for the title and cups on a regular basis and get back on to the European scene.' While Warburton has relatively little money to spend in terms of transfer fees, there appears to be more stability at the club than during McCoist's time in charge. Far from being envious of the former Brentford boss, McCoist said: 'I look at it with 100 per cent pleasure because the football club and the supporters deserve that and it is what is required. 'We didn't have it in our time, but in many ways we probably could say we won the biggest battle that we ever had and that was to continue playing as a club and continue the unity of the club. 'I don't have regrets. I think circumstances would indicate I was probably unlucky in the timing of the managerial job, but you can't have everything. 'I was very fortunate to play at the club I supported for 15 years, then be assistant manager and then manager. So I think it would be wrong of me to start complaining. 'I am delighted to have been there. I am a Rangers man, always have been, always will be.' McCoist believes Rangers can take encouragement from their William Hill Scottish Cup semi-final win over the Hoops at Hampden Park last season, albeit in a penalty shoot-out. 'Celtic will go into the game strong favourites, but they went into the last game strong favourites and didn't win,' said the former Scotland striker. 'Rangers played exceptionally well. 'I thought Celtic had good chances to score, but I thought Rangers were far and away the better footballing team that day and they must take heart from that because they passed the ball as well as I have seen them pass it in a long time and they will be looking for a similar performance. 'But the game being at Celtic Park will be a big difference. 'The home support will be in the vast majority and hopefully the Rangers players will handle that okay.'

Diesel engines set to die out say Renault who admit they are phasing them out of their cars Car giant Renault has admitted that diesel engines are to disappear from most of its European models blaming tighter emissions standards following the Volkswagen scandal. French firm Renault and its domestic rival Peugeot both heavily invested in diesel technology and more than 60 per cent of the 1.6 million cars Renault sold in Europe last had diesel engines. However, by 2020 more stringent EU emissions standards come into force following a scandal that saw Volkswagen admit engineering software to cheat emissions tests. And now two sources who were at an internal meeting at Renault during the summer, told Reuters that Chief Competitiveness Officer Thierry Bollore explained that the diesel investment outlook had dimmed significantly One of them said: 'He said we were now wondering whether diesel would survive, and that he wouldn't have voiced such doubts even at the start of this year. 'Tougher standards and testing methods will increase technology costs to the point where diesel is forced out of the market.' Renault, like most of its contemporaries, will now put more time, effort and resources into developing electrified cars. However, a Renault spokesman declined to comment. Diesel engines, pricier but more efficient than gasoline, had already vanished from the smallest 'A'-segment vehicles like Renault's Twingo well before VW's so-called 'dieselgate', as their extra expense outstripped savings on fuel. By 2020, Renault now predicts that the toughening of Euro 6 emissions rules will push diesel out of cars in the next 'B'-segment size category, including its Clio subcompact, as well as some 'C' models such as the Megane hatchback, the sources said. Models in those first three size categories accounted for most of the group's 1.6 million European deliveries last year, and more than 60 per cent were diesels. However, Renault is not alone in predicting a bleak future for diesel, though its projections go further than the doubts expressed by other carmakers about the technology. VW now wonders "whether it still makes sense to invest a lot of money in further developing diesel", Chief Executive Matthias Mueller said in June.

Poo-dunnit? Chinese police use faeces to track down shrewd burglar after he defecated on the floor in one home A burglar in China who robbed over 280 homes was finally caught by police after he decided to defecate in one of the houses he had robbed. Zhang had been caught before and so his DNA was in the system meaning that they were able to identify him from his feces, reports Huanqiu , an affiliation with the People's Daily Online. The man surnamed Zhang went on trial today at Fangshan Court in Beijing for his thefts in cases involving over 300 victims. In less than four years, the 39-year-old allegedly robbed 287 homes. The papers for his current trial span some 300 pages. According to Zhang he was too tired because of work and so started to steal. He said: 'Stolen money was mainly used to eat a big meal and go to internet cafes to watch a movie.' In 2008, he was found guilty of theft and sentenced to three years in prison. When he was released, he went back into stealing. Police only caught the man after he defecated on one of the homes that he was robbing. According to reports, he had become enraged and so decided to defecate on the floor. Because of his previous criminal record, police were able to take Zhang's feces and run a DNA test. Out of 287 alleged thefts, all of them took place at night. A range of items were stolen, from thousands of yuan to bus cards, shoes and jewellery. Zhang told the court today that in 2011 he came to Beijing with his wife to work. He became tired of work and started stealing.

Yields falter for second day on Fed rate outlook By Gertrude Chavez-Dreyfuss NEW YORK, Sept 7 (Reuters) - U. S. Treasury yields fell for a second straight session on Wednesday, with two-year and ten-year notes falling to three-week lows as investors tempered expectations the Federal Reserve will raise interest rates later this month after a round of mostly weak economic data. U. S. 30-year bond yields, which move inversely to prices, also dropped to a four-week low, while yields slid to three-week troughs for the intermediate sector, the five- and seven-year notes. A softer-than-forecast U. S. non-farm payrolls report for August and a modest expansion in the U. S. services sector last month prompted a round of U. S. Treasury debt buying as market participants started to price out a rate hike. Mixed comments from San Francisco Fed President John Williams overnight did not alter expectations for the Federal Open Market Committee meeting Sept. 20-21. Williams, who is not a Fed voter this year, said he prefers a rate sooner rather than later, but will not necessarily advocate for tightening in the upcoming meeting. Fed funds futures prices on Wednesday indicated that investors see just a 15 percent chance of a rate hike at the Fed meeting, unchanged from Tuesday. The perceived likelihood of a December rate increase, however, was just 46 percent, versus 50.8 percent the day before. "Should the data heading into the Fed take September off the table completely, it's very likely the market will push December back as well," said Aaron Kohli, interest rate strategist at BMO Capital Markets in New York. In mid-morning New York trading, benchmark 10-year Treasury notes were up 3/32 in price to yield 1.528 percent, from 1.543 percent on Tuesday. Yields fell as low as 1.519 percent, a three-week trough. The 30-year Treasury bond rose 15/32 in price to yield 2.218 percent, from 2.240 percent late Tuesday. Earlier, yields slid to a four-week low of 2.206 percent. Prices of two-year notes were flat with a yield of 0.734 percent. (Editing by Jeffrey Benkoe)

Father of 'cannibal' frat boy tells Dr Phil that his son was 'the kindest, caring kid', but he son got 'real serious' in the weeks before he allegedly stabbed a middle-aged couple to death The father of 'cannibal killer' Austin Harrouff broke down on Dr Phil as he called his son a 'happy boy', but said in the weeks before he allegedly attacked a couple in their garage, he had become 'real serious'. Dr Wade Harrouff also revealed more details of his 19-year- old son's behavior the night he allegedly stabbed a middle-aged couple to death with a knife and a broken vodka bottle. Austin Harrouff came out of the coma he had been in since the alleged attack two weeks ago, and police are trying to piece together what happened the night John Stevens and his wife Michelle Miscon were killed on August 15. Dr Harrouff said he had 'no idea whatsoever' that his son, a Florida State University sophomore and member of Alpha Delta Phi fraternity, was capable of what he's accused of doing. 'He's always been the kindest, caring kid I've ever seen,' he told Dr Phil. 'He always wanted to help people. I called him the happy boy. The last two weeks he started not being happy. He started being real serious.' Austin Harrouff has been under armed guard in St. Mary's Medical Center in West Palm Beach for 11 days since the attack that stunned the nation. Dr Harrouff said his son had been eating with him and his daughter in Duffy's restaurant in Jupiter, Florida, when he got angry and left. From there Austin made his way to his mother Mina's house, according to a spokesman for the Dr Phil show, where he attempted to drink vegetable oil. His mother forced him to mix with with Parmesan cheese before he wolfed that down, after which he left, Dr Harrouff said. Mina was so concerned about her son's behavior that she then called 911, telling police that he had been acting erratically and claiming to have superpowers. Dr Harrouff said that his son was 'extremely dehydrated' because the family had just taken a four-hour walk together. He said that his daughter brought Austin back to the restaurant, adding that he grabbed his son by the collar and said 'What's wrong with you?'. 'You could see it in his eyes he was totally embarrassed,' Dr Harrouff told Dr Phil, holding back tears. 'He reared back and Carrie said, 'Stop right there', and he looked at Carrie with an embarrassed face and stopped. Then he left.' It was at this point that Austin Harrouff left the restaurant and attempted to walk back to his father's house. Police say it was on that walk that Harrouff stabbed Stevens, 59, and wife Mishcon, 53, to death in their garage, before eating part of Stevens' face and abdomen. Dr Harrouff, who has said his son's alleged attack is due to mental illness, also told Dr Phil that the teen's personality completely changed two weeks before the killings. Fighting back tears, the prominent dentist added: 'I'm deeply sorry for what my son did to those people. 'And I'll apologize for him, because my own son would have never done that... He's such a good person. 'He would never knowingly do something like that. I'm truly sorry to those people.' Officers say Harrouff, who they believe overdosed on synthetic drug flakka, randomly attacked Stevens and Mishcon after dining with his dad and sister at Duffy's restaurant in Jupiter on August 15. After her son stormed out, mother Mina called police, telling them: 'My son has kind of taken off and I'm concerned about his own safety. He's acting a little strange.' 'It seems like he's a little delusional,' she added. 'There's this recent change that we're noticing. He was out to dinner with his dad today and he took off. 'He says he feels immortal and like a super-hero. I don't know what's going on with him. The only thing he has on is a switch-blade type pocket knife.' Cops say Harrouff used a switchblade he was carrying along with a broken vodka bottle from the garage to stab the couple to death. Harrouff is also accused of stabbing neighbor Jeff Fisher in the back when he came over to investigate after hearing Mishcon screaming. After butchering the couple, police say Harrouff ate part of Stevens' face and abdomen and consumed caustic chemicals found in the garage. When officers arrived, they say it took several shots from a Taser, a police dog and four officers to subdue Harrouff, who was showing abnormal strength. Investigators also say that, while on his way to hospital, Harrouff boasted that 'you won't find any drugs in my system.' Cops have confirmed that, once the teen is released from hospital, he will be charged with murder. Officials said that Harrouff, 19, a rising sophomore at Florida State University and a member of the Alpha Delta Phi fraternity, will be charged with two counts of first degree murder and one of first degree attempted murder as soon as he is well enough. Stevens's family has called for the death penalty. In the month leading up to the attack on the Stevenses, Harrouff posted 41 YouTube videos, progressively getting more and more bizarre. In one, he said: 'I've got a psycho side and a normal side. I've lost my mind. Help me find it.' In another clip, posted last month, Harrouff walks through a house toting a semi-automatic pistol. He then looks down the gun's barrel after pretending to pull the trigger. In the last video, posted four days before the attack he talked about using drugs for his bodybuilding. 'I used to think that I needed steroids to be a bodybuilder. To be this thing. To be this symbol. To be this lie,' he said. Flakka swept Florida in 2013, gaining the nickname 'five dollar insanity' because it causes hallucinations, psychosis and 'superhuman' strength.

The VERY easy ingredient swaps that make baking much healthier Baking and healthy eating don't usually go hand in hand. But with a few easy ingredient swaps, you really can have your cake and eat it - even if you're watching your waistline. Dietitian Laura Forwood has revealed the clever tweaks you can make to classic recipes that will make your bakes lighter, but just as tasty. SUGAR Using natural sugars such as maple syrup and coconut sugar will prevent a highs and crashes, says Laura, who is medical nutrition manager at Abbott, an Illinois-based global pharmaceutical company. 'Natural sugars like honey tend to have a lower glycaemic index (GI), so they are less likely to cause a sharp rise and fall in blood sugar and may help to keep your levels more constant,' she says. She advises to replace refined sugar with date sugar in bread, honey in sweet recipes such as biscuits, while coconut sugar and maple syrup can replace sugar in most recipes. If using a honey or maple syrup, recipes may need to be adapted to compensate for the liquid, she warns. FLOUR Boost the amount of protein and fibre you eat by swapping normal flour for alternatives like buckwheat, spelt or almond, says Laura. 'Opt for buckwheat or spelt flour, both high in fibre, if you’re looking for a cake to aid digestion and keep blood sugar stable. 'Fibre helps keep the gut healthy and doesn’t spike blood sugar. Buckwheat is also great for those following a gluten-free diet. 'Try almond flour, packed with protein, healthy fats and vitamin E, to keep the skin, immune system and heart healthy. 'Oat flour contains insoluble fibre which may help to reduce the amount of bad cholesterol in the body. 'And adding seeds like flax, chia or poppy can be a good way to increase the protein and fibre content.' She adds that seeds are a source of minerals such as calcium, phosphorus, iron and zinc, which are good for bone health and to boost your immune system. They also contain fatty acids, which can lower cholesterol. FRUIT Using fruit in baking is nothing new, but you can make cakes healthier by using vegetables in your bakes, according to Laura. 'Sweet vegetables like beetroots, courgettes or even butternut squash are a great addition to cakes or muffins. Just remember to shred them finely to ensure they are evenly spread throughout the cake mixture.' She also advises to add dry fruit or fresh fruit and vegetables wherever possible to a bake as it will increase the fibre content and provide a source of vitamins and minerals. BREAD Swap white loaves for wholewheat alternatives, and add nuts and seeds for a source of healthy fats, says Laura. 'When baking bread it is a good idea to use wholemeal or whole-wheat flour, which will provide increased fibre, necessary for the heart and digestive health. 'Granary breads with added nuts and seeds contain unsaturated fats, a healthy form of fat which may help with heart health, and may also contain some vitamins such as B vitamins and vitamin E, which are great for a healthy immune system, skin and eyes.' Those on a low gluten diet can still enjoy baking bread if they opt for a rye loaf, suggests Laura. Rye bread contains very little gluten and has a low GI index, which won't cause a spike in blood levels, she says. TOPPINGS Swap cream for low fat Greek or natural yoghurt, says Laura, as yoghurt is a good source of calcium, vitamin B12, magnesium and potassium. 'Yoghurt can also be high in protein and low in fat, plus the probiotics it contains could help provide immune benefits. Probiotics also provide "friendly" bacteria which may help with digestion and gut function.' She also suggests sweetening icing with fruit instead of sugar as a healthy alternative.

GRAPHIC-Euro zone stocks appear riskier proposition than U. S. By Sudip Kar-Gupta LONDON, Sept 7 (Reuters) - A measure of how risky it is to hold euro zone stocks is near levels last seen in the 2008 financial crisis and at the start of the region's 2011 debt crisis. The "equity risk premium" (ERP) for the euro zone stands at a little above 8 percent, much higher than around 5 percent for U. S. stocks which have been hitting record highs this year, in contrast to European stocks which are down so far in 2016. The ERP is the extra return investors expect from a combination of dividend yields and earnings-driven stock price projections compared with yields on low-risk government bonds. A higher reading for the euro zone shows how they offer a tasty premium and better rewards for brave investors who are taking on the added risk of investing in stocks in a region performing poorly economically relative to the United States. That equity risk premium reading for the euro zone had fallen down to around 5 percent back in 2009, as world markets started to recover from the 2008 global credit crisis. However, it then spiked up from 8 percent to 14 percent over the course of 2011 as the euro zone was blighted by a sovereign debt crisis, and it has crept up from 6 percent to 8 percent over the past year. "While monetary easing has boosted the euro zone's bond markets through lower credit spreads, the follow-through into lower equity risk premiums has been less successful," said Patrick Moonen, principal strategist for multi- asset at NN Investment Partners. Moonen added that his firm favoured U. S equities to euro zone stocks at present. "Flaws in the institutional framework, a burdened banking sector, political uncertainty and Brexit explain the reluctance of investors to buy euro zone equities. On top of that, euro zone earnings growth has lagged U. S. earnings growth with the exception of 2015," he said. Record low interest rates and other economic stimulus measures from the European Central Bank have propped up the region's stock markets, although fears are now mounting that negative rates could hurt profits at European banks. According to Thomson Reuters data, second quarter earnings for companies on the pan-European STOXX 600 index are expected to decline 7.8 percent from a year ago. By comparison, second quarter earnings for U. S. companies are forecast to contract 2.2 percent. Hartwig Kos, co-head of multi-asset at Swiss bank SYZ, said the higher equity risk premium for the euro zone reflected more tempting valuations. Kos said this was caused by "pronounced cheapness in some segments of the European market", notably the banking sector, where Deutsche Bank and Credit Suisse have hit record lows while Italian banks have been battered by persistent worries over their bad debts. Yet Francois Savary, chief investment officer at Geneva-based fund management and consultancy firm Prime Partners, had a more negative interpretation, saying the higher ERP for the euro zone was not a convincing "buy" signal for that market. "In a world of financial repression and liquidity injections, premia are distorted to say the least. Thinking in economic terms, with low growth and no inflation which, by the way, means more quantitative easing, and the message of the high equity risk premium is not a convincing one," he said. 77 New Zealand man fed up with 'giant randy cat' looking for sex at night A 'giant randy cat' has been terrorising a man at night time by mewling outside his house. New Zealand man Peter Davies has had enough of the aroused cat he says has been outside his house and after chasing the animal he took to Facebook to please with his local community to help him. In his humorous post which was accompanied by a drawing of the cat, he wrote: If you think this might be your cat can you please keep it in for a few nights. 'For the last week it has spent most of the night mewling on our terrace or being chased by me with a water-pistol around the garden. 'As you can see from the picture it is mainly dark grey with a white undercarriage and a rubbish voice. 'No-one in our house wants to have sex with you Mr Cat please go away.' He also asked others to reveal images of their cats so he could eliminate their pets from his 'investigation'. His post, on a community Facebook page, inspired a number of entertaining responses. One person posted a photo of their cat, Abby, saying she wasn't interested in 'night time naughties'. Another suggested leaving cucumbers lying about - a technique known to frighten cats when they see them. Although there has been a lot of interest in the post, it's not clear if the 'giant randy cat' is still at large.

Sydney jilted man sells all his furniture because it reminds him of his ex-girlfriend A jilted man has taken to social media to sell all his home furniture that he once shared with his other half. The heartbroken man said he has decided to move out of the Sydney property following the bitter breakup - and he's selling everything because the furniture has left behind a poignant reminder of his ex-girlfriend. Turning over a new leaf, the man shared a collection of photographs of the items up for sale, ranging from kitchen appliances to living room furniture Wednesday night. 'Come profit off my heartbreak! I'm moving and everything must go as it reminds me of her!' the man said in the post on an Inner West classifieds Facebook group. In the advertisement, furniture includes a king-sized bed 'we fought and smiled on' for $125, a sofa lounge 'we cried on' for $200 and a microwave, kettle and toaster 'we never used'. Clearly disheartened following the split, the man described a brief memory on each piece of furniture of what the former couple used them for in happier times. 79 Zimbabwe court strikes down police ban on protests HARARE, Sept 7 (Reuters) - Zimbabwe's High Court struck down on Wednesday a two-week ban on public protests issued by the police, a ruling hailed as a brave stand by the courts in the face of threats to the judiciary from President Robert Mugabe. Judge Priscilla Chigumba, who was deciding a case brought by political activists, said the official police notice issued last week after some of the worst public violence in two decades was invalid, and therefore suspended. Mugabe's opponents have become emboldened in the last two months by rising public anger over economic hardships including severe cash shortages, high unemployment and delays in payment of public workers. Lawyer Tendai Biti, a former finance minister who represented the four activists, said the police commander who issued the notice had no authority and had violated the constitution. After the ruling, Biti told reporters Chigumba had issued "a brave judgement that asserts the independence of the courts. " On Saturday, 92-year-old Mugabe accused judges of being reckless in allowing anti-government demonstrations that later turned violent. 80 Anniversary tweets posted to Larry King's Twitter were written by his WIFE As Larry King spent his 19th wedding anniversary alone, his wife has been accused of posting loving tweets celebrating the couple's big day on her husband's Twitter account. Two tweets were published to King's Twitter on Monday, with the first saying: 'It's our 19th wedding anniversary, and while I get older, @shawnieora seems to get younger. Many kisses.' A second message, in which King's account retweeted Shawn's celebratory tweet, a caption read: 'Thanks for a wonderful anniversary Quasi. I love you too' with an accompanying heart emoji. Reports surfaced last month that King, 82, and his wife Shawn, 56, were headed for divorce amid rumors that she cheated on him with Princess Diana's friend, public speaking guru Richard Greene. A source close to King told DailyMail.com there's 'no way' that the former TV personality would have posted the anniversary tweets. The source said: 'The reaction from Larry's staff and family members after they saw those tweets ranged from shaking their heads in utter disbelief to nausea. 'It's just another example of Shawn manipulating the situation so she comes out smelling of roses. 'Larry is a complete technophobe. He doesn't like using computers, he still has a flip phone, so there's no way he would have posted those tweets.' The source said that if King wants to get something on to social media, he'll call his office and leave a voicemail. Whoever is in the office will pick up the message and post to Twitter for him. But because it was Labor Day on Monday, no one was in the office when the anniversary tweets were published, the source said. 'There's only one explanation: Shawn posted those tweets herself,' the source said, adding that King's employees would never use an emoji in a Tweet or say 'I love you' with an emoji. Despite assurances that the couple's marriage is as strong as ever, King spent Monday alone, running errands. Since rumors of Shawn's alleged affair emerged, the couple has put on a united front, denying all allegations of infidelity in a public interview and stepping out together hand in hand. 'She's a cheater,' the source close to King previously told DailyMail.com. 'This isn't news to anyone close to Larry, but they didn't know Shawn would be dumb enough to send naked pictures to a guy and leave a trail of text messages. 'Larry has legal counsel and people who work closely with him on his shows and family and close friends who actually care about him, advising him, comforting him, being there for him as compassionate people. 'Larry and Shawn had been booked on the 'Home and Family' show weeks ago to promote his bed line 'Sleep Like A King', but everyone close to him that work with him strongly advised him not to do it, but on Thursday he became unreachable, he had turned off his phone. 'The next thing you know he went side by side with her and did the show anyway in a sham appearance promoting sheets. 'What amazed us all was that Shawn called the cheating accusations rumors, how can she call it rumors when everyone knows it's true and there's text messages.' The source said: 'Larry feels one way when he's not with Shawn, when he's around sane, rational people, and then when he's with his wife and her father at home, it's a totally different story. 'They seem to have this power over him, no one can put their finger on it, they could convince Larry that the Earth is flat. 'He seems to listen to certain people - those who work closely with him - but then everything changes.' 'But his friends don't like Shawn for various reasons and they've told him so. But then Larry goes home and he's a different person. He's like Jekyll and Hyde. 'Who knows what hold she has over him. Shawn needles him and he submits to stupid stuff, he makes sense and then he makes no sense.' In the photos from the day marking their 19th anniversary, King looked somewhat glum as he ran errands in Los Angeles, including taking a trip to the hairdresser's. The National Enquirer reported last month that Shawn had allegedly been having an affair with a man later revealed to be Greene. The pair allegedly met when Greene was a guest on Larry and Shawn's podcast, Back and Forth with Shawn & Larry King, and he has worked with everyone from Princess Diana and Naomi Campbell to Will and Jada Pinkett Smith. An attorney for the Kings and a rep for Greene called the claims 'inaccurate.' Larry and Shawn both previously filed for divorce in 2010 in the wake of allegations that the legendary television personality was having an affair with his wife's younger sister. The couple, who have two teenage sons, eventually stopped the proceedings and reconciled. It would have been the ninth divorce for Larry, who has had seven wives and been married eight times. Greene is a former lawyer who left the legal profession to become a self-described communications strategist and public speaking trainer. The Enquirer revealed in their story racy texts that were allegedly sent by Shawn and Greene, who they claim have been enjoying 'steamy sex' sessions for months. In one of the alleged texts sent by Shawn to Greene, she wrote that her husband seems to know about the affair. 'Larry made another joke about me having an affair last night … He said I looked cute in my glasses like a school teacher ... having an affair with one of my students,' texted Shawn. 'He senses a shift in me.' In another conversation, Greene allegedly told Shawn: 'You do have great ankles, legs, eyes, brain, breasts, mouth, vagina etc. etc.' Shawn also allegedly texted about leaving her husband at one point, saying however it would not be for another man but because of problems in their own relationship. 'I would leave Larry because he killed our romance years ago, and my boys [Chance and Cannon] didn't do anything to deserve to be raised by a [redacted] who indulges them at every turn.' In July, Shawn allegedly texted Greene a photo 'showing her seductively exposing a breast.' And Greene allegedly referred to one hookup between the two as the 'Sleep WITH a King' campaign. Shawn allegedly joked in response text that she would be 'in charge of casting,' which led to the man responding: I have a large [redacted].' Shawn was previously accused of having an affair in 2008 with her sons' baseball coach, but she denied that allegation. Larry and Shawn live together with their teenage sons in their $13.6million mansion in Beverly Hills, California. Shawn's elderly father Karl Engemann, 86, also lives with the couple. They were married on September 5, 1997, in his hospital room in Los Angeles three days before the star underwent surgery to clear a clogged blood vessel.

Donald Trump ending media blacklist after denying credentials to reporters Republican Donald Trump's presidential campaign is ending a media 'blacklist' that kept reporters from several disfavored publications from getting credentials to his rallies and campaign events. The lifting of the blacklist, which was reported by CNN Wednesday, comes after internal pressure from Trump's new campaign team and running mate to back off on the ban. 'I figure they can't treat me any worse!' Trump told the network, which itself has been the subject of some of Trump's media criticism during the campaign. Reporters from the Washington Post, BuzzFeed, Huffington Post, Politico, the Des Moines Register, and the Daily Beast have been subject to the ban at various times. In the case of the Post, the publication took to having reporters enter Trump rallies with the public while having other reporters monitor his events on TV. Reporters from the banned outlets usually got emails telling them the events were full, but the Trump campaign acknowledged the ban was in place. Trump has railed throughout the campaign against the 'dishonest media,' whom he regularly calls out for criticism during his rallies – often prompting a chorus of boos from the crowd. Trump's running mate, Indiana Gov. Mike Pence said soon after he joined Trump that he would look into the ban. He told talk host Hugh Hewitt in late July, 'We’re going to have those conversations internally and I fully expect in the next 100 days we’re going to continue to be available to the media, whether they’re fair or unfair.' New campaign manager Kellyanne Conway also pushed for the lifting of the ban. Trump defended the ban in June, but told CNN he wouldn't maintain it if he won the White House. 'In my case, I'm a person running for office. I rent these large arenas, so I have an option,' Trump said. 'When I'm representing the United States, I wouldn't do that. But I would let people know if somebody's untruthful.' Trump said he had 'great respect' for some members of the press,' even as he defended the ban. 'But when people write false stories – when they write lies, when they write stories that have no bearing on the truth, when they say things that are so wrong, and they know they're wrong, and they tell me that they know they're wrong, but they refuse to change them, then I say, they're not going to come anymore.' In an early sign of the thaw, banned outlets were being allowed into a press 'pool' that closely follows the candidate on behalf of the media. BuzzFeed was in it last week, and Huffington Post is doing pool duty tomorrow. DailyMail.com handled press duties for the pool last week, when Trump campaigned in Detroit, although his campaign didn't bring traveling press with him on his trip to Mexico.

Eric the Cockatoo, a self-proclaimed 'f*****g legend', shows his softer side He may be dubbed the 'world's rudest bird', but Eric the Cockatoo is not just fond of foul words. Eric has often been seen shouting expletives, in one viral video calling himself a 'f*****g legend', but this cute clip shows he also has a more affectionate side. A new video of the Australian bare-eyed cockatoo shows him fascinated by owner Brayden's zipper, which he frantically tugs up and down. Brayden stands by and watches, and at one point pecks the bird on the head, as Eric happily plays around with his new toy. Sweetly he then clambers up over the man's orange jumper for an adorable shoulder cuddle. Momentarily he lets out a cry of complaint after Brayden refuses to let him snuggle in his top, but this quickly subsides and the bird shares a warm embrace with his head. Scroll down for videos The bird shot to fame two years ago when he was filmed calling himself a 'f*****g legend' after his female owner called him out on his profanity. More recently, he refused to eat his broccoli in an amusing clip where he hurled it off the table in disgust while cursing at his owner. Now known as 'Eric the Legend', the X-rated animal was also filmed calling the pet dog a 'f****** c***' after repeatedly spitting at the pooch.

Can YOU recognise familiar voices? Three per cent of people can't As many as three in every hundred people may be unable to recognise the voices of people they know. New research suggests that 3 per cent of people surveyed couldn’t place a familiar voice, a condition called phonagnosia. Their results showed that this inability to recognise familiar voices may be even more common than its more well-known visual counterpart, prosopagnosia, in which people are unable to recognise faces. Because people are born with the condition, many may be unaware they have it. Researchers at the University of Southern California carried out an online survey of 730 people, to see if they were able to recognise a range of well-known celebrity voices. These celebrity voices were mixed with those of non-famous people of the same age, sex and regional accent. Participants were asked to match the voice clips to headshots of celebrities they had previously said they recognised, based on their rating of 100 celebrity photos before the study. Celebrities included George Clooney and his dulcet tones, nasal comedian and talk show host Jay Leno and lethargic actor John Cusack. They were also asked to perform an imagination task, in which they had to recall common sounds and voices of celebrities. On average, participants correctly matched the voice with its celebrity owner 76.7 per cent of the time, with men fairing slightly better than women. As would be expected, those people who were more familiar with celebrity culture performed better, as did older participants. But after the results were analysed, researchers found 3.2 per cent of people were wide of the mark. This small proportion were more than twice as likely to deviate from the correct answer, than would be expected by chance – with a standard deviation of 2.28 compared to the expected 1.1. From this pool of 23 people, the researchers indicate that they were likely born with an inability to recognise familiar voices, and that an inability to recognise voices, coupled with an inability imagine how the voices might sound to them, could be used as an indicator for the condition in clinical practice. Writing in the journal Brain and Language , the authors explain: ‘This is largest survey ever conducted on the accuracy of the recognition of familiar voices to provide an assessment of the prevalence of phonagnosia.'

Locals stunned to discover waterway has turned bright RED in Siberia These are the shocking pictures that show how an Arctic river has turned bright red stunning locals. The Daldykan River in the far north of Siberia changed colour rapidly after a suspected discharge of industrial waste from a nickel plant. Images of the river were highlighted on social media in Russia with locals saying that a problem at the factory, also known as Nadezhda Metallurgical Plant, was behind the scary colouring of the water. The plant is owned by metals giant Norilsk Nickel which said it was checking the reports of the river's putrid colour. A source from the factory said: 'Environmental monitoring around the river and adjoining production facilities of the company is being held, including helicopter flights.' Production is also being reduced at the Krasnoyarsk region plant which processes nickel concentrate, reported The Siberian Times. But the company added: 'The Polar Division of Norilsk Nickel does not confirm a leak of emergency discharge of industrial waste into the Daldykan River which could have affected its state.' However, locals say on social media that it is not the first time that the river's colour has turned red and that in winter the snow turns red.

'Immediately two dolphins that had been hanging around bored suddenly started chattering and were swarming all around my right foot. 'The trainer asked if I had any metal in my right leg, which I do - six screws and a steel plate, and she said that the dolphin's sonar is perfectly able to "see" that and they always like different stuff.' Earlier this year, a woman hit the headlines when she released a video that she claimed showed her playing fetch with dolphins. Alison Teal, from Hawaii, said she concocted the game with the playful pod as a child and swims out to a secret bay on the tropical island with a leaf secured in her bikini which the animals flick back and forth with their fins. Explorer Alison, 30, said she grew up with the ocean as her playground and describes the wild dolphins, which she swims with once a week, as her best friends.

Turkey detains journalists, politician, pollster as post-coup purge deepens By Ayla Jean Yackley and Humeyra Pamuk ISTANBUL, Sept 7 (Reuters) - Turkish authorities detained journalists, a politician and a pollster on Wednesday and issued arrest warrants for another 105 people over suspected links to a U. S.-based Islamic cleric blamed for a failed coup on July 15. Opposition politicians warned the latest wave of arrests may target government critics with no clear links to the religious movement led by Fethullah Gulen, a preacher accused by Turkey of masterminding the abortive putsch. He denies any involvement. Three journalists working for the nationalist Yenicag newspaper were detained at their homes and were being held at a sports hall in Ankara, the daily said on its website, describing the men as critics of the Gulen movement. Turan Yaldir, a former lawmaker from the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP), was detained in Ankara on similar charges, Yenicag also reported. "Nationalists will not forget those who are doing this merely to sideline political opponents," Meral Aksener, a senior MHP figure, said in a statement on Twitter. Aksener this year mounted a challenge to the MHP's veteran leader but has faced legal stumbling blocks and could face expulsion from the party. The chief prosecutor's office in Ankara launched an investigation into 105 suspected leaders of cells in 17 provinces said to be responsible for military personnel in what authorities have dubbed the "Gulenist Terrorist Organisation" (FETO), the state-run Anadolu Agency said. Authorities have already detained tens of thousands of people over alleged links with Gulen, whose religious movement publicly espouses interfaith dialogue and education, and have made rooting out Gulen's followers their top priority. The crackdown has alarmed Western allies and rights groups who fear a witch hunt. The body of a teacher who was dismissed last week over suspected Gulenist links was discovered after an apparent suicide, the Dogan news agency said on Wednesday. Officials have rejected concerns that their actions are too heavy-handed, pointing to the gravity of the coup plot, in which rogue soldiers commandeered fighter jets and tanks and attacked parliament, killing more than 240 people. "OPPORTUNISTIC" Several thousand soldiers have been expelled from the army and more than 100,000 people, including civil servants, bureaucrats, teachers, soldiers and journalists, have lost their jobs for alleged links with Gulen, who has lived in self-imposed exile in the U. S. state of Pennsylvania since 1999. Turkey wants the cleric extradited. The ruling AK Party, which has its roots in political Islam and had long collaborated with Gulen's movement, may be using the coup to target other opponents, especially from the secular left, said Veli Agbaba, deputy chairman of the main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP). "We see many innocent citizens - leftists, social democrats, revolutionaries, Ataturkists and those from different faiths - who have nothing to do with this organisation who have opportunistically been suspended or lost their jobs," Agbaba said in a statement. Ataturkism refers to supporters of the secular principles promoted by Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, who founded the modern Turkish Republic in 1923 on the ashes of the Ottoman Empire. "Depicting people who have no ties whatsoever to FETO as putschists, replacing them with people from different sects amounts to building a new parallel structure," said Agbaba. Ozer Sencar, who runs the polling company Metropoll, was also apprehended, according to his Twitter account. Metropoll declined to comment. The defence ministry said on Wednesday a further 73 members of the air force had been expelled over suspected ties to Gulen. 88 Female WWII pilot will finally be laid to rest at Arlington It took an act of Congress, but World War Two pilot Elaine Harmon is finally being laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery. Harmon died at the age of 95 in April last year. She was one of the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP), a group of women who flew military aircraft on non-combat missions during the war so that men were freed up for combat. The women were not granted military status at the time they served, but received retroactive status as veterans in 1977. Scroll down for video And for many years, WASPs were eligible to have their ashes placed in urns at Arlington. Last year, though, Army officials concerned about limited space at the cemetery ruled WASPs ineligible for inclusion at Arlington. A memo from then-Army Secretary John McHugh concluded that Arlington never should have granted eligibility to WASPs in the first place. Harmon's family fought the rule. In December, an AP article about the family's campaign prompted widespread criticism of the Army for excluding WASPs. A petition on change.org received more than 175,000 signatures. In May, President Barack Obama signed legislation allowing WASPs in Arlington. The legislation was sponsored by Rep. Martha McSally, R-Ariz., herself a retired Air Force pilot who was the first female fighter pilot in U. S. history to fly in combat. On Wednesday, Harmon's ashes will be laid to rest at a funeral service with military honors. The family had kept her ashes in a bedroom closet while they worked to get Arlington's exclusionary policy overturned. Harmon's granddaughter Erin Miller said dozens of family members are in town for Wednesday's service, which comes more than a year after her grandmother's death in April 2015. 'It sounds funny, but we're all kind of excited,' she said. 'In a way, we've already grieved, and this now is about closure.' Eligibility for in-ground burial at Arlington, which has severe space limitations, is extremely tight, and not even all World War II veterans are eligible for burial there. But eligibility for above-ground placement of ashes is not quite as strict. Kate Landdeck, a Texas Woman's University history professor who has researched the WASPs, said roughly 1,000 women served as WASPs while the program was in effect from 1942 to 1944. Thirty-eight were killed. Fewer than 100 are still alive, Landdeck said. The youngest is 93. The women, who test-flew repaired military aircraft, trained combat pilots and towed airborne targets that other pilots fired at with live ammunition, received the Congressional Gold Medal in 2009, but the campaign to get them into Arlington exposed even more people to WASPs' role in history. 'No one knew who these women were in the 1990s,' Landdeck said.

Green Party candidate faces charges in graffiti protest CANNON BALL, N. D. (AP) — Authorities say they will charge Green Party presidential candidate Jill Stein who is accused of spray-painting construction equipment during a protest against the Dakota Access Pipeline in North Dakota. Morton County Sheriff Kyle Kirchmeier said Tuesday that Stein will face trespassing and vandalism charges. A spokeswoman for Stein says activists invited her to leave a message at the protest site Tuesday. Stein sprayed "I approve this message" in red paint on the blade of a bulldozer. As of late Tuesday, Stein was not arrested or charged in the incident. The Standing Rock Sioux Tribe is trying to stop construction of a section of the pipeline that tribal leaders say would violate sacred and culturally sensitive grounds. Angry protesters faced off with construction workers at the site on Saturday.

Police swarm illegal Labor Day party filled with hundreds of Amish youth Authorities in the heart of Ohio's Amish country say they arrested more than 70 people in a raid at a weekend party in a field that was expected to attract hundreds of Amish youth. More than 40 officers converged Saturday on the Hardy Township field after concerned parents notified the Holmes County sheriff's office of a large party expected to attract over 1,000 Amish from Ohio and neighboring states. There were reports of 75 arrests made at the scene. However, investigators said that 73 people - including 35 juveniles - were taken into custody and charged with underage consumption of alcohol. The Daily Record of Wooster reports that some also face charges of resisting arrest, and two were taken to a hospital for alcohol related-illness. The Holmes County Sheriff's Office had initially received calls from concerned parents warning of a massive party expected to draw more than 1,000 young Amish revelers from Ohio and neighboring states. The organizer of the event has not been identified, however the party was well-planned, with footage from the scene taken by KTLA showing a large marquee, barbecuing area and chemical toilets. Each guest paid $25 a ticket. The owner of the property where the party was held, who did not want to be named, said he rented the site to the organizer, who promoted the event on social media. 'It gives them a safe place. They're not out on the road. And everyone knows they are going to party. They like to drink beer, and they are going to party,' the owner said. 'Since we don't supply them (alcohol) and we're not the ones actually inviting them, we are not checking ID's or anything. The guy that rented the place has not asked us to do that, so therefore we don't.' The Amish are a Christian sect whose members live a simple lifestyle and shun modern conveniences. In Amish culture, teenagers that have not been baptized into the church are allowed to explore the outside world. Often that includes experimenting with alcohol and drugs.

Bill Cosby's lawyers blame racial prejudice for comedian's sex assault charges Bill Cosby 's legal defense team is blaming racial prejudice and 'a barrage of new accusers' for the criminal sex-assault charges lodged against the actor in Pennsylvania. During a pretrial conference hearing Tuesday, a Montgomery County judge set a June 5 trial date for the felony sexual assault case involving the 79-year-old actor. The case going to trial is over a 2004 encounter at his home near Philadelphia with former Temple University employee Andrea Constand. He was charged with drugging and molesting Constand, and this is the only criminal case stemming from dozens of claims of sexual misconduct. After the hearing, defense lawyer Angela Agrusa faulted the media for not investigating claims by dozens of other women who have come forward in the past decade. Cosby spokesman Andrew Wyatt has meanwhile issued a statement blaming lawyers for the women for 'the trampling of Mr. Cosby's civil rights.' Scroll down for video The statement says Cosby has been 'no stranger to racial discrimination and hatred' throughout his career. Attorney Gloria Allred rejected accusations by Wyatt that her representation of several women accusing the comedian of drugging and sexually abusing them was built on racial bias and prejudice. Allred wrote in a statement that several of the women she represents are African-American and she thinks their voices should be heard. Allred has held numerous press conferences with women who have accused Cosby of sexual misconduct, although it is not clear whether she represents any of the 13 women prosecutors want to testify against the comedian in the criminal case. She represents a woman suing Cosby, claiming he forced her to perform a sex act at the Playboy Mansion around 1974, when she was underage. Allred wrote that ultimately the Pennsylvania case is about whether or not Cosby is guilty. The comedian arrived to the Montgomery County Courthouse laughing with a wide smile on his face as he was pictured getting out of a black SUV with assistance from his legal team who have claimed he is blind for the past few months. He clutched an aide's arm as he walked, but his eyes appeared less milky and he seemed more engaged and animated as he spoke with his legal team before the hearing. Cosby has denied any wrongdoing, but prosecutors can introduce evidence of other acts, even though no charges were brought in those cases, to show a pattern of behavior. Prosecutors said they reviewed accusations made against Cosby by about 50 women and concluded 13 should be allowed to testify. 'An individual who, over the course of decades, intentionally intoxicates women in signature fashion with the intention of sexually assaulting them cannot also be mistaken about whether or not these women are consenting to the sexual abuse,' prosecutors wrote in their motion. The judge postponed hearing arguments on the filing during Tuesday's hearing to allow the defense team more time to review the copious material. Constand told police that Cosby drugged and molested her. Legal experts have said a judge might allow as evidence similar allegations against Cosby in which drugs or alcohol were involved. Cosby's lawyers meanwhile asked that prosecutors not be allowed to use a telephone conversation recorded by his accuser's mother and other evidence at his trial. The tape was to be played in the hearing Tuesday afternoon while the judge mulled over the issue. Cosby in the conversation described the sex act as 'digital penetration' but refused to tell Gianna Constand what pills he had given her daughter. The defense argued that Cosby did not know he was being recorded, and that the tape should not be permitted at trial under Pennsylvania's two-party wiretap law. District Attorney Kevin Steele will fight to use both the phone call and a lengthy deposition from Constand's lawsuit at trial. Cosby's lawyers said they will also ask to have the case moved out of Montgomery County, where it was a high-profile issue in Steele's fall campaign for office. He ran against the prosecutor who had declined to charge Cosby in 2005.

Joan Collins breaks down in tears as she discusses sister Jackie's death She lost her younger sister to breast cancer in September 2015. And Joan Collins has opened up about grieving the death of Jackie, as she explained that she just likes to imagine her sibling is living in a different part of the world. Speaking on Wednesday's episode of This Morning, the 83-year- old actress admitted she struggled to cope the loss, describing grief as a 'process'. Scroll down for video Breaking down in tears, she explained: 'I miss her terribly. I have talked about it. Grief is process. I think I cried for two or three months then you get over it and accept it in a begrudging way. 'Then you get angry like why did this happen to her.' She continued: 'There's no good thing about it but the way around it is thinking of it like we are just in different places, as if she's just in LA.' Joan made the comments ahead of the first anniversary of Jackie's death in two weeks time. Joan also spoke about her upcoming Unscripted tour, which will see her answer a series of questions on stage, asked by her husband Percy Gibson. Revealing to Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby that there are a number of topics off-limit on the tour, the cheeky presenting duo immediately asked one of the banned questions as they queried who was the best on-screen kisser she had encountered. Taking the moment in her stride, Joan responded: 'Paul Newman was the best kisser... and the prettiest.’ The Dynasty star was also full of her kind words for her husband of 15 years as she praised him for being 'her rock'. She gushed: 'It's wonderful, he's my rock. We're together 24/7 which I think says a lot about our relationship. We get along really well. 'We're on the same wavelength about everything - not everything, we do have rows and bicker but I put my trust in him totally.' Despite enjoying spending time with her fifth husband, she revealed that she was no plans to stop working anytime soon. But she explained finding work was a struggle as she revealed: 'Most roles today are geared towards younger women, it's all shoot ‘em ups and car explosions. 'They want to have young teeny-weeny girls in them, they don't want to see older women in them. But things are changing. ‘I don't know what I'd do if I didn't work, I'd do something. I'm going to write another book I think.'

New Haven police chief Dean Esserman resigns after two public outbursts A Connecticut police chief who was invited to the White House twice in the past year to discuss law enforcement issues has resigned after being disciplined twice for berating people in public. New Haven Mayor Toni Harp announced Tuesday that Police Chief Dean Esserman resigned by 'mutual agreement' effective September 2. She also praised him for the city's declining crime and violence. 'I'm grateful for the chief's successful legacy,' Harp said in a statement. 'Public safety in New Haven is improved after a return to grass roots community policing, productive partnerships with other law enforcement agencies, and positive interaction with community organizations.' Esserman has apologized in the past for public outbursts but it seems the last straw was a July confrontation with a member of staff at Archie Moore’s bar and restaurant in New Haven. Harp investigated the matter after a witness said the chief's yelling prompted other diners to be asked to move further away from his table. Esserman is said have been infuriated by poor service at the restaurant. He faced a packed room at police headquarters Tuesday afternoon, speaking briefly about his time as chief and the dedication of officers in the city. He said it was 'very important' that he give those in attendance the 'respect they deserve,' and to let them know in person that he was moving on. 'It has been a privilege to serve Mayor Harp and work alongside the remarkable men and women of the New Haven Department of Police Service, who no doubt have earned the title, 'New Haven's Finest,'' Esserman said. 'Last and certainly not least, it has been my privilege to serve the wonderful people of New Haven.' Esserman agreed in July to go on three weeks of paid leave and then went on temporary sick leave amid the latest allegations from the local restaurant. This is not the first time the police chief has been caught up in controversy. Two years ago, Harp reprimanded Esserman for his angry confrontation with a Yale Bowl usher. When he was police chief in Providence, Rhode Island, in 2011, Esserman was suspended without pay for one day for what media reports said was a threat to throw coffee in the face of a sergeant who was coughing during a speech by Esserman. Officers in both New Haven and Providence voted no confidence in Esserman, accusing him of publicly berating officers, intimidation, favoritism and retaliation, among other things. Esserman, a Dartmouth College graduate who never served as a rank-and-file officer, is a protege of New York City Police Commissioner William Bratton, former chief of the Los Angeles police and former Boston police commissioner. He previously served as an assistant prosecutor in Brooklyn, New York, assistant police chief in New Haven from 1991 to 1993, police chief for the Metro-North Railroad and police chief in Stamford, Connecticut. He became New Haven chief in 2011. Esserman was among 30 law enforcement officials, civil rights activists and other people invited to a White House discussion in July on improving police-community relations. He also attended a White House discussion on reducing incarceration across the country in October. Assistant Chief Anthony Campbell will continue to serve as Interim police chief in New Haven.

Flybe air stewardess wins sex discrimination case after the airline over post baby flexible rota A Flybe air stewardess has won a landmark sexual discrimination case against the airline because they refused to negotiate her working hours after she gave birth. Cabin crew manager Emma Seville, 44, previously worked full-time on fully flexible working hours, which meant she could work any 22 days in a month. But after giving birth to her baby boy Ted in August 2015, she applied to return to work part-time when her nine months of maternity leave ended this spring. Ms Seville, of Birmingham, requested a fixed pattern of a pre-arranged 11 days a month so she could organise childcare for her son. However, the proposal was rejected by Flybe bosses who told her she could only come back if she worked any given 11 days a month. She took the battle to a tribunal and claimed her employment arrangements put female workers at a disadvantage compared to male employees. The hearing was regarded as a test case with the possibility of the flexible scheme being adapted by women cabin crew members of other airlines in future. And on Monday, tribunal judge Lynne Findlay found in her favour and agreed she had been placed at a disadvantage following a three-day hearing. The judge described Ms Seville as ‘enthusiastic’ and said cabin crew work was dominated by women mainly of child-bearing age. Sitting at Birmingham Employment Tribunal, Miss Findlay added: ‘This placed women at a disadvantage compared with men.’ Both parties will now have six weeks to come to an agreement on a settlement and discussions will also begin to mutually agree Ms Seville’s working hours. The tribunal judge said if they failed to agree in that period she would decide what amount to award at another tribunal hearing. Today, Ms Seville said: ‘They point-blank refused. They told me that a significant part of the workforce was already on fixed hours and they couldn’t get any more people in that pot because it would have a detrimental effect on the business. ‘I was feeling desperate. It was a very difficult time. You would be waiting for the rotas, anxiously holding your breath to see what you would be getting.’ Ms Seville appealed the decision internally with Flybe, where she has worked for 13 years, but again was told she could only go back on a flexible rota. She added: ‘My only option was to go to a tribunal. I felt let down. I felt I had given 13 years’ service. 'My individual situation and my loyalty were not taken into consideration. I was absolutely ecstatic and delighted but not just for me. ‘It’s a great victory for the whole workforce. I was the first person to bring this to a tribunal. 'It has been 12 months of hell but I knew it was absolutely the right thing to do.’ Ms Seville won her claim for sexual discrimination against Flybe but lost her other legal claim for flexible working hours against the airline giant. She told the tribunal panel she had problems engaging nurseries to look after her baby because of the unusual working hours. Flybe had rejected Ms Seville’s request for flexible working hours and opposed both legal claims at the tribunal. They told the tribunal her request for flexible hours had been fully considered but that it could cause problems. They also said the airline had a fixed rota system and that shifts could be swapped. A Flybe spokesman has been contacted for comment by MailOnline today. 2016-09-07 13:18 Mark Duell www.dailymail.co.uk

Iran escalates high seas harassment of US Navy The provocative maneuver, which on Sunday brought the Iranian boat within 100 yards of the Firebolt, a coastal patrol boat that carries a crew of about 30, was assessed by the US to be unsafe and unprofessional and could have led to a collision, the official said. There have been 31 unsafe America encounters with Iranian vessels in the Persian Gulf so far this year, up from 23 in all of 2015, the official said. What's behind Iran's provocations in the Persian Gulf Less than two weeks ago, US naval ships in the northern Persian Gulf were harassed by an Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps vessel, which came within 200 yards of the US ships. Following standard maritime procedures, the USS Squall fired three warning shots to ensure the Iranians understood they needed to leave the immediate area. US Army Gen. Joseph Votel, Commander of US Central Command, last week called the Iranian conduct "concerning. " Navy report: Failure at every level for US ships captured by Iran "In recent days, we have witnessed even more provocative activity by the IRGC and Navy vessels. That type of behavior is very concerning, and we hope to see Iran's naval forces act in a more professional manner," he said. Votel believes the "unsafe, unprofessional" behavior is an attempt by Iran to "exert their influence and authority in the region. "

Apple prepares to show off new iPhones and other products Eyes are on Apple on Wednesday as the company prepares to unveil expected new iPhones and other products at an event in San Francisco starting at 1 p.m. EDT. Analysts say the new iPhones could help Apple recover modestly from a recent dip in sales. But with few expected dramatic changes from previous models, Apple watchers aren't expecting the kind of big spikes in consumer demand that the company saw two years ago, when it introduced larger screens. Apple sold nearly 92 million iPhones during the first six months of this year, about 15 percent fewer than the same period last year. This year marks the first time that Apple has seen such declines. Industry analysts say it's because last fall's iPhone 6S and 6S Plus didn't contain many new features or improvements. Investors are hoping for a bigger boost in sales next year. Wall Street analysts say reports from Apple's Asian manufacturers and suppliers indicate the company has decided to wait a year before introducing a major overhaul of the phone in 2017. That will be the iPhone's 10th anniversary.

Mich. Senate: Let restaurants go to the dogs, not cats The Michigan Senate voted Wednesday to unleash restaurants clamoring to allow patrons to bring their dogs into outdoor dining areas. Senate Bill 727 would allow dogs in outdoor restaurant patios in establishments and municipalities that permit them. But cat owners will have to leave their felines at home, according to the bill sponsor. “Cats are known to be very independent and unwilling to follow most rules, so I think cat owners will understand why their pets aren’t included in this,” said state Sen. Margaret O’Brien, a Portage Republican and a self- described lifelong cat owner. O’Brien said the legislation was sparked by inquiries from restaurant owners who want to make their establishments pet-friendly, following a trend of hotels increasingly allowing dogs. “I have restaurants in my community that are begging for this,” she said Wednesday. Under current Michigan law, only seeing-eye and other service dogs are allowed in restaurants, according to a bill summary. Under the legislation, dogs would not be allowed to pass through any interior section of the restaurant, and the business would have to keep the designated outdoor area clean of dog hair, dander and bodily waste. The bill restricts dogs to sitting on the patio ground and prohibits them from being allowed to sit in restaurant chairs or on their owners’ laps. They would have to be leashed and accompanied by adults. “So what we’re trying to do is establish rules that are common across the state that protect the health and safety of the other patrons there,” O’Brien said. The bill now goes to the Republican-controlled House for consideration. Under the legislation, municipalities also could pass ordinances outlawing or restricting dogs in restaurant patios, O’Brien said. The bill would make dog owners liable for any damages or injuries caused by their pet at the restaurant, though O’Brien doesn’t think it would be a problem. “If you also Google ‘dog bites in restaurants,’ you don’t find anything,” she said. “I tried to find the horror stories.”

Rio Paralympics: 'Murderball' just one reason you should watch And the astonishing pace and accuracy of the five-a- side soccer players belies the fact that all of the players are blind or partially sighted. With poor ticket sales and serious funding issues, the Rio Paralympics are being scaled back, and as a result some countries may not be able to send athletes. And Russia will not be there at all due to the blanket ban imposed following allegations of state-sponsored doping. But in the midst of the biggest crisis to face the Paralympic Games in its 56-year history, it is easy to lose sight of the sporting achievements and entertainment offered by the athletes. Paralympic sports are fast, exciting and fiercely competitive. Here are some events that might surprise you... 'Murderball' It's not an idle nickname. This is wheelchair rugby, a full contact sport and every bit as aggressive as the able-bodied equivalent. The International Wheelchair Rugby Federation describes it as a game of "invasion and evasion" -- the idea being to carry the ball across the opposition goal line by dribbling or passing it every 10 seconds. Hitting and blocking chairs is permitted, though not from behind -- and players are often tipped out in the heat of the action. Mixed teams of men and women are 12-strong but only four players can be on court at any one time. You may spot a difference in the wheelchairs. Those used in defense are longer with a wide bumper to and hold opponents while attackers' chairs are shorter with rounded wings so they are easier to maneuver. The game was invented in the 1970s by disabled athletes looking for an alternative sport, and after an exhibition event at the 1996 Atlanta Paralympic Games it made its official debut at Sydney in 2000. There is great rivalry between the US and Canadian teams who are two of the leading nations in the sport and became the central feature of a 2005 documentary called simply "Murderball. " Defending Paralympic champion Australia will face Great Britain in the opening game of the Rio tournament, while London 2012 silver medalist Canada takes on host Brazil. Human to hero: Wheelchair warrior Five-a-side football Only the goalkeeper in this game is sighted -- everyone else is visually impaired. Outfield players have to wear eye shades to ensure fairness so they are all effectively playing blind. But you would hardly know it. The ball appears glued to their feet and the passes have astonishing accuracy. So how on Earth do they do it? The players rely on the sound of the ball, which rattles when it moves, and the calls of their team mates. The coaches also play an important role, as the Royal National College for the Blind explains on its website. They stand around the pitch directing the play, while the goalkeeper organizes the defense. Acoustic boards around the perimeter create an echo that allows the footballers to find each other's positions by clicking their fingers, and, if a penalty is awarded, a coach taps the frame of the goal to help the player locate the frame and place the shot. Now imagine it for yourself -- or better still, try it. It takes incredible skill and practice to be able to play but provides a gripping and entertaining contest for spectators. The rivalry between Brazil and Argentina, so evident in the 11-a-side game, is also keen in this competition. The Brazilians are the current world champions and top the world rankings. Argentina is currently second. Brazil's Tiago Da Silva is already looking forward to the competition. "A final against Argentina might be the dreamed final, but there are still many other competitive teams, such as China. We will go into Rio ready to fight for the title," he told the Paralympics website. Brazil also boasts a superstar of the game. Known as Jefinho and the Pele of Paralympic five-a-side , he is a two-time Paralympic Games champion and carried the Rio Olympic torch in Salvador. Eight teams will battle it out for gold in Rio with the opening match on September 7. Track athletics The Olympics has Usain Bolt -- the Paralympics has Jason Smyth. The visually impaired Irish runner is the fastest Paralympian ever with a blistering time of 10.46 seconds for the 100 meters -- and he thinks he can run faster. He told the Rio 2016 website that he is determined to win gold again after his record-breaking London 2012 victory. "I feel like there is a potential to run quicker than I have in the last Paralympic Games. I intend to -- what happens on the day is always a different thing, but I'm optimistic that I can," he said. The Paralympian sprinters are not far behind their Olympic colleagues -- Smyth was only just outside the qualifying time for the Rio Olympics -- which makes the track events equally as exciting. Cuba's Omara Durand, another visually impaired sprinter, is the world record holder for the women's 100 meters in a time of 11.48 seconds and will be aiming for gold in multiple events in Rio . Watch out too for the athletes who run with prosthetic limbs. Briton Jonnie Peacock and Brazilian Alan Oliveira will all be scrapping for the medals in Rio after American Richard Browne pulled out through injury. Peacock has already said he is relishing the rivalry so get set for a very fast race -- and a possible new world record. If you like athletics you will love the track battles at the Rio Paralympics. Sitting volleyball You might think playing volley ball sitting down would slow it down a bit -- but you would be wrong. It's frenetic. Each team is allowed six players on the court -- which is a smaller area than its standing counterpart -- and the net is very low. Teams are allowed three passes to set up an attack before the ball has to cross the net. The defending Paralympic champion in the men's game is Bosnia and Herzegovina but watch for the Chinese team which became world champion in 2014, though currently ranked only seven. Sitting volleyball has a long history and is a very popular sport. It emerged in the 1950s and has featured in the Paralympics since 1980. Eight men's and eight women's teams will compete in Rio and the host Brazil will feature in both. Goalball Goalball is one you may have not come across before and it's an intriguing sport to watch -- perhaps chiefly because players have to defend a huge goal. It's one of only two events that doesn't have an Olympic equivalent -- the other being boccia -- and was developed to help rehabilitate visually impaired World War II veterans. Players wear blackout masks to ensure fairness and try to hurl a ball at high speed, in the fashion of a 10-pin bowler, aiming at the opposition net which runs across the width of the court. Teams can only field three players in an attempt to block the ball and do so by listening to the bells contained inside. Spectators have to maintain total silence during play so the athletes can react to the oncoming shots. It was introduced into the Paralympics in Toronto in 1976. Ten teams of each gender will compete in Rio. Host Brazil has a star in 22-year-old Leomon Moreno da Silva who was top scorer with 51 goals in the 2014 World Cup. The game is great fun to watch and another one where you can't help wondering how they do it.

The California Coastal Commission will hold a hearing in Newport Beach on Wednesday on the plan to build 895 homes, a 75-room hotel and retail complex on the 401-acre site long used for oil drilling. A Commission spokeswoman says Banning Ranch is considered to be the largest remaining, privately-held coastal property that could be developed south of Los Angeles. While the plan would preserve roughly 80 percent of the property as open space, environmentalists want a much larger chunk protected. Commission staff members want developers to confine building to 20 acres to protect habitat for the burrowing owl.
