France EN Q5 Should the EU allow the redoubling of the capacity of the pipeline Nord Stream II? The vote of the MEPs Nord Stream II is a project aiming at doubling the capacity of the existing Nord Stream pipeline that transports gas from Russia to Germany through the Baltic Sea via the exclusive economic zones of Finland, Sweden and Denmark (bypassing the Baltic States and Poland). European Gas demand has been decreasing since 2010. Many Eastern and Central European countries thus oppose Nord Stream II as they see it as a way for Russia to enhance its influence in the EU and use Nordstream to reduce the quantity of Russian gas sent to the EU through Ukraine. On the other hand, the German Economic Ministry as well as Austria are more concerned about the positive economic effects of the project on the German economy, and ensuring continuous supply of Russian gas. A vast majority of MEPs expressed concerns about Nord Stream II and some MEPs even adopted positions that are in contrast to the stance taken by their parties at home, such as German S&D MEPs who opposed the project supported by their party leader Sigmar Gabriel. • COMMON STATEMENT on the US-EU WINE TRADE RELATIONSHIP June 14, 2021
COMMON STATEMENT ON THE US-EU WINE TRADE RELATIONSHIP June 14, 2021 The EU and the US wine sectors play a critical role in supporting a vibrant transatlantic trade relationship. This sector is an essential driving force for many rural economies and for a significant number of medium and small enterprises. The undersigned deeply regret that the wine sector, as a notable industry in our two economies is sometimes caught in the crosshairs of unrelated trade disputes, causing economic damage to producers, and putting the millions of jobs that they support at risk. Consumers are also victims of those trading conflicts, which can lead to higher prices and reduced consumer choice. We urge the European Union and the US to resolve current trade disputes, to stop any related retaliatory action against wine exports, and to strengthen their bilateral partnership in order to avoid any sanctions against those sectors, including in the context of the current World Trade Organization Large Civil Aircraft Airbus-Boeing disputes. As legislators and policy makers on both sides of the Atlantic, we acknowledge the importance and benefits of strengthening this bilateral partnership. Both the U.S. and the EU are each other’s largest export markets, with the total wine trade reaching more than $5.3 billion (€4.5 billion) annually, creating jobs and investment and supporting sustainable agriculture on both sides of the Atlantic. We ask our governments to further support the economic vitality and diversity of our wine sectors by working to remove all tariffs on wine to achieve a “zero for zero” wine trade environment.

  • Declaration Unfinished Justice: Restitution and Remembrance (Following European Conference on Restorative Justice Brussels, 26Th April 2017)
26th June 2017 Declaration Unfinished Justice: Restitution and Remembrance (Following European Conference on Restorative Justice Brussels, 26th April 2017) Preamble It is now more than seventy years after the Holocaust (Shoah) in which six million Jews – seventy-five percent of the Jewish population of Europe – were murdered. Only a small fraction of private and communal immovable and movable property illegitimately seized from Jewish victims has been returned or compensated to rightful owners, heirs, or to the Jewish people at large. Many Holocaust survivors live in poverty and without adequate social care, and their social welfare needs are expanding rapidly as they age. In light of the above We, members of the European Parliament, affirm the moral responsibility of European Union member states to advance Holocaust-era property restitution. We also declare our enduring commitment to the provision of adequate and immediate social welfare support for Holocaust survivors, the demarcation, protection and preservation of Jewish cemeteries, mass graves and other burial sites, the preservation of Jewish heritage sites, and the promotion of Holocaust education, research and remembrance. We recognize the commitment of the European Parliament to restitution of Holocaust-era assets as called for in previous resolutions of the Parliament and reaffirm past international principles and declarations that reflect a consensus for the restitution of Holocaust-era assets. Considering the urgency of the matter We call upon Member States of the European Union to reaffirm their commitment to resolve remaining issues on restitution and compensation of looted property, in accordance with the principles of the Terezin Declaration on Holocaust Era Assets and Related Issues, and to address the growing social welfare needs of Holocaust survivors.
