  • Declaration Unfinished Justice: Restitution and Remembrance (Following European Conference on Restorative Justice Brussels, 26Th April 2017)
26th June 2017 Declaration Unfinished Justice: Restitution and Remembrance (Following European Conference on Restorative Justice Brussels, 26th April 2017) Preamble It is now more than seventy years after the Holocaust (Shoah) in which six million Jews – seventy-five percent of the Jewish population of Europe – were murdered. Only a small fraction of private and communal immovable and movable property illegitimately seized from Jewish victims has been returned or compensated to rightful owners, heirs, or to the Jewish people at large. Many Holocaust survivors live in poverty and without adequate social care, and their social welfare needs are expanding rapidly as they age. In light of the above We, members of the European Parliament, affirm the moral responsibility of European Union member states to advance Holocaust-era property restitution. We also declare our enduring commitment to the provision of adequate and immediate social welfare support for Holocaust survivors, the demarcation, protection and preservation of Jewish cemeteries, mass graves and other burial sites, the preservation of Jewish heritage sites, and the promotion of Holocaust education, research and remembrance. We recognize the commitment of the European Parliament to restitution of Holocaust-era assets as called for in previous resolutions of the Parliament and reaffirm past international principles and declarations that reflect a consensus for the restitution of Holocaust-era assets. Considering the urgency of the matter We call upon Member States of the European Union to reaffirm their commitment to resolve remaining issues on restitution and compensation of looted property, in accordance with the principles of the Terezin Declaration on Holocaust Era Assets and Related Issues, and to address the growing social welfare needs of Holocaust survivors.

  • 2016 Business Mission Report
10th Australian Business Mission to Europe Zurich, Bern, Brussels, Helsinki 26 June - 1 July 2016 Mission Report Supported by EABC Major Partner: (Executive Summary) Introduction The EABC Australian Business Mission to Europe is undertaken each year as an initiative to strengthen bilateral relationships with European leaders, institutions, officials, peak business groups and policy organisations. The Missions travel to Brussels as the political and administrative capital of the European Union, and to other political and commercial capitals in Europe. Since 2006, EABC delegations have travelled to Berlin, Bratislava, Budapest, Copenhagen, Frankfurt, Geneva, Hamburg, Istanbul, London, Madrid, Milan, Munich, Paris, Rotterdam, Stockholm, Strasbourg, The Hague, Toulouse, Venice, Vienna and Warsaw. The visits provide opportunities for senior Australian business representatives to engage in dialogue on issues including policy responses to the global financial crisis, economic and fiscal policy, banking and financial services, foreign and security policy, trade, competition, energy and climate change policy, infrastructure, research and innovation. The Missions also provide a valuable opportunity for Australian business leaders to work with Australian Government representatives in Europe - principally with Australian Embassies and Austrade offices - to profile Australia’s economic credentials and capabilities and promote opportunities for European investment in Australia. Mission Leader & Endorsements The Council was delighted to have the leadership and participation of EABC Chairman and former Premier of New South Wales, the Hon Nick Greiner AC, for the 2016 Mission to Zurich, Bern, Brussels and Helsinki. The Prime Minister of Australia, the Hon Malcolm Turnbull MP, also endorsed the mission as an important initiative to foster greater economic relations between Australia and Europe.

They were soon joined by Poland’s Law and Justice Party and, following the European elections in June 2009, the European Conservatives and Reformists Group was born. It pledged to challenge the status quo in the European Parliament, where deals were often struck by a handful of party leaders behind closed doors. Not surprisingly our political opponents tried to block us, predicting that the ECR could not last. They were wrong. To the surprise and chagrin of many in Brussels, we emerged from the 2014 elections as the Parliament’s third largest group with 70 MEPs from 15 different member states and myself as chairman.
