Islands in Malaysia are famous around the globe with its beautiful nature, culture and sparkling blue seawater. Malaysia boasts some of the most beautiful islands. An amazing number of these natural treasures lay nestled in tranquil bays and coves. Beneath the aquamarine waters lies a fascinating world of coral and marine life waiting to be discovered. Island development in Malaysia started to be developing tremendously due to the high number of tourist arrival to the island. Many hotel, resort and chalet had been built by the investor and the government agencies. Natural areas were explored when tourism development had been carried out. These physical developments come with tourism activities which led to the some impacts and challenges to the coral reef. The main objective of this paper is to examine the environmental impact of island development in Malaysia focus on the coral reef and to find which activities of development affecting coral communities. This preliminary study had been conducted by collecting all the possible secondary data from various sources like Department of Marine Park, Department of Survey and Mapping Malaysia (JUPEM) and Ministry of Tourism Malaysia. Economics and Social Policy Analysis, University of York A thesis submitted to the Newcastle University for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape June 2012 ABSTRACT This study employs the Choice Modelling (CM) Technique, in particular the Contingent Ranking (CR) method, to measure the economic value of the Redang Marine Park (RMP) system in Malaysia. The reason for using CR is to understand which islands in the RMP system the tourists prefer. Knowing the islands’ ranking is crucial for the planning and development of this particular island as a tourism product and destination, and at the same time, for maintaining the islands’ ecosystem as a protected area. The study is divided into three major components. The first investigates destination choices amongst tourists. In this component, the attributes of interest include choices of island, types of accommodation available at the destination, facilities provided at the place of accommodation, distance of accommodation sites to the beach, and types of transportation used to reach the destination. These attributes are measured using the 3-day/2-night (3D2N) package prices offered as holiday packages to tourists. The second component measures the importance of environmental attributes, namely the status of available fish and coral species, the numbers of nesting turtles and the degree of congestion that the tourists experience while participating in water activities such as snorkelling and diving. These attributes are measured through the conservation fees collected by the park authority from tourists visiting RMP.

    PROGRAM i ii iii About the Conference After the first (1997) and second (2001) Symposia on Marine Conservation Biology confirmed the large number of marine conservation biologists interested in furthering marine science, research and public pol- icy, a group of marine professionals organized a formal society for marine conservation biology. After much discussion, this group accepted an invitation from the Society for Conservation Biology (SCB) to become one of their ’sections’. The SCB Marine Section now provides a home for marine conservation biology in order to further marine conservation science, research and public policy. The Section’s flagship meeting is the biennial International Marine Conservation Congress (IMCC). Previous IMCCs have been held in Washington D.C - USA (2009), Victoria - Canada (2011), Glasgow, UK (2014), and St. John’s - Canada (2016). IMCC5, to be held in Kuching - Malaysia (2018) will be the first iteration of the meeting to be held in a country defined by the World Bank as either "low income" or "middle income". The SCB Marine Section very much hope this move will open the meeting up to more delegates from such countries, who have historically found it harder to attend IMCCs due to high travel and subsistence costs.
