  • Television Sharknados and Twitter Storms
Television Sharknados and Twitter Storms: Cult Film Fan Practices in the Age of Social Media Branding Stephen William Hay A thesis submitted to Victoria University of Wellington in fulfilment of the regulations for the degree of Master of Arts in Media Studies Victoria University of Wellington 2016 Abstract This thesis examines the Syfy channel’s broadcast of the television movie Sharknado and the large number of tweets that were sent about it. Sharknado’s audience engaged in cult film viewing practices that can be understood using paracinema theory. Paracinema engagement with cult films has traditionally taken place in midnight screenings in independent movie theatres and private homes. Syfy’s audience was able to engage in paracinematic activity that included making jokes about Sharknado’s low quality of production and interacting with others who were doing the same through the affordances of Twitter. In an age where branding has become increasingly important, Syfy clearly benefited from all the fan activity around its programming. Critical branding theory argues that the value generated by a business’s brand comes from the labour of consumers. Brand management is mostly about encouraging and managing consumer labour. The online shift of fan practices has created new opportunities for brand managers to subsume the activities of consumers. Cult film audience practices often have an emphasis on creatively and collectively engaging in rituals and activities around a text. These are the precise qualities that brands require from their consumers. Sharknado was produced and marketed by Syfy to invoke the cult film subculture as part of Syfy’s branding strategy.

  • Sharknado Social Media Analysis with SAP HANA and Predictive Analysis
Sharknado Social Media Analysis with SAP HANA and Predictive Analysis Mining social media data for customer feedback is perhaps one of the greatest untapped opportunities for customer analysis in many organizations today. Social media data is freely available and allows organizations to personally identify and interact directly with customers to resolve any potential dissatisfaction. In today’s blog post, I’ll discuss using SAP Data Services, SAP HANA, and SAP Predictive Analysis to collect, process, visualize, and analyze social media data related to the recent social media phenomenon Sharknado. Collecting Social Media Data with SAP Data Services While I’ll be focusing primarily on the analysis of social media data in this blog post, social media data can be collected from any source with an open API by using Python scripting within a User-Defined Transform. In this example, I’ve collected Twitter data using the basic outline provided by SAP in the Data Services Text Data Processing Blueprints available on the SAP Community Network, updated it for the REST version 1.1 Twitter API. This process consists of 2 dataflows, the first tracks search terms and constructs (Get_Search_Tasks transform) and executes (Search_Twitter transform) a Twitter search query to store the data pictured below. In addition to the raw text of the tweet, some metadata is available, including user name, time, and location information (if the user has made it publicly available). Once the raw tweet data has been collected, I can use either the Text Data Processing transform in SAP Data Services or the Voice of Customer text analysis process in SAP HANA.

  • 'Sharknado' Hits California Hard, Internet Even Harder
‘Sharknado’ Hits California Hard, Internet Even Harder Chris Nichols The Exchange July 12, 2013 If something could actually break the social Web because of extreme overexposure -- as the Harlem Shake taught us, it can't -- the "Sharknado" rage of the moment would be a candidate to do it. The Syfy original movie, which aired Thursday night, became a dominant force on the Internet during its airing and afterward, with Twitter and search traffic levels suggesting cancer had been cured or an intelligent alien species found. Image from Sharknado On Twitter itself, there was no escaping #sharknado. According to one report, the peak activity was about 5,000 tweets a minute right before 11 p.m. E.T., when "Sharknado" was concluding. Google Trends also showed quite an interest, with "Sharknado" collecting more than 500,000 searches July 11. Starring Ian Ziering, best known for his 1990s work on "Beverly Hills, 90210," and Tara Reid, of "American Pie" fame, "Sharknado" is the story of a terrible and powerful Pacific Ocean hurricane, one spawning tornadic winds that scooped up sharks by the hundreds and deposited them along the California coast, where naturally they feasted on the residents of greater Los Angeles. The still image from a Syfy clip here shows how serious the matter was. [Related: See the 'Sharknado' Storify experience] Many people were consumed. A Ferris wheel broke loose. Explosives were dropped into the storms to show them who's boss. Ziering used a chainsaw. He later told CBSNews: "When I read the scene where I'm actually chainsawing my way out of the belly of a shark, how could a guy turn that down when that's in the job description?" He couldn't.

  • THE LOVED ONES (2009) Though at Heart Another Tied-To-A-Chair-And
THE LOVED ONES (2009) Though at heart another tied-to-a-chair-and-tortured film, this Australian debut from writer-director Sean Byrne rings the changes on an overworked form, owing more to Stephan Elliott (in Frauds or Welcome to Woop Woop mode) than Eli Roth. Material which is usually filler – comic relief teen hijinx, the police investigation, secondary characters catching on to what’s wrong, angsty family tragedy – is all tied intimately to the central situation, and considerably deepens the black comic ordeal. In a prologue, long haired teenager Brent (Xavier Samuel) is bantering with his dad while driving home when a bloody figure shows up in the middle of the road. Brent loses control of the car and his father dies in the crash. Months later, Brent has taken to cutting himself and can’t connect with his girlfriend Holly (Victoria Thaine). When wallflower Lola (Robin McLeavy) asks him to take her to the dance, he is more disturbed than touched. Later, while climbing – he seeks out dangerous situations from guilt over his father’s death – he is bagged and snatched by Eric (John Brumpton), Lola’s loving, disturbed father. Brent is tied to a chair (of course) in the isolated Stone house, which is festooned with balloons and party lights. Lola appears in a pink dress, expressing manic glee that shows she’s gone beyond playing with Barbie dolls and dreaming of perfect romance to persuading her father to kidnap hot guys so they can be transformed into her dates by power-drill lobotomy (a prelude to the real brain-boiling process, which involves a kettle of hot water).

  • Mockbusters, Monsters, Mass Destruction, and Lots More Stuff!: Appreciations of the Asylum Oeuvre: Call for Abstracts
H-Announce Mockbusters, Monsters, Mass Destruction, and Lots More Stuff!: Appreciations of The Asylum Oeuvre: Call for Abstracts Announcement published by Joseph Colavito on Wednesday, January 8, 2020 Type: Call for Papers Date: July 15, 2020 Location: Indiana, United States Subject Fields: Film and Film History, Popular Culture Studies, Humanities, Composition & Rhetoric, Area Studies Call for Submissions Mockbusters, Monsters, Mass Destruction, and Lots More Stuff!: Appreciations of The Asylum Oeuvre If you are familiar with made for SyFy films featuring cgi monsters and bloodshed, or if you have mistakenly rented a film that you mistook for a current blockbuster, or if you are still digging through the five dollar bins at various department stores then you are probably familiar with films like Sharknado, Mercenaries, Sinister Squad, American Virgin, Sunday School Musical, and Snakes on a Train, all courtesy of The Asylum. Functioning similarly to American International Pictures did in the 1950s, this film company produces the same sorts of fare, accompanied by similar exploitation impulses. The films no doubt have varying degrees of quality, but they are numerous, and have become a significant part of the cultural fabric. I solicit proposals for essays to be included in a collection devoted to academic analysis of The Asylum’s cinematic output. There will be sections devoted to Sharknado and Z-Nation, but each will be limited to three or four essays. Other areas of interest include: The Asylum movies as inspired by exploitation cinema Z Nation as tv phenomena Lensed readings (feminist, race, colonial, eco-critical, et al) readings of individual films Generic placement or influences in specific films or bodies of films The concept of mockbusters The Asylum films as parody or satire of genres Social media influences on The Asylum’s films Close readings of individual films or episodes (especially comedies and family Citation: Joseph Colavito.
