The Road Character Analysis | LitCharts Sharknado is a American made-for-television sci-fi disaster film about a waterspout that lifts sharks out of the ocean and deposits them in Los Angeles. It is the first installment in the Sharknado film series. Off the coast of Mexico, the ship of shark fin smuggler Carlos Santiago is caught in a cyclone, interrupting his meeting with a potential buyer. A tornado throws swarms of sharks onto the boat, killing all aboard. The cyclone soon hits Los Angeles, flooding the city with shark-infested seawater. Bar owner and surfer Fin sets out with his friends, Baz, Nova, and George, to rescue his estranged wife, Lets Read! The Shark in the Dark, and their teenage daughter, Claudia, after the bar and boardwalk are destroyed by the flooding. While heading to April's home, the group stops on a freeway to save people as flooding causes sharks to attack. George is killed and the group learns of a tornado warning. They arrive at April's house just before the first floor is flooded and shark-infested. Collin, April's boyfriend, is eaten by sharks, but the rest of the group escapes unharmed from the house, which gets hit by a huge wave causing it to collapse. As they travel, the group comes across a school bus trapped in the floodwaters and surrounded by sharks. Fin stops to save the children and bus driver Lets Read! The Shark in the Dark rappelling down to the bus from a bridge. Afterward, the bus driver is killed by a letter in the Hollywood Sign. While Nova is driving the car, a shark lands on top of the car and rips the roof off. Fin's hand is cut and the group abandons the car before it explodes. They steal another car and meet up with Fin and April's son Matt, who is found taking Lets Read! The Shark in the Dark at his flight school. Three tornadoes develop and absorb the floodwater, turning into shark-filled "sharknados". The group borrow Lets Read! The Shark in the Dark from nearby storage and Matt and Nova become attracted to each other. Matt and Nova decide to stop the threat Lets Read! The Shark in the Dark the incoming sharknados by tossing bombs into them from a helicopter. Two are destroyed, but they are unable to stop the third one. As Nova fights off a shark that had latched onto the helicopter, she falls out of the helicopter and directly into another shark's mouth. Matt is heartbroken. Baz is also lost in the storm along with Matt's friends Bobby and Luellyn. Ultimately, Fin destroys the last sharknado with a bomb attached to his car and the sharks begin to plummet toward the ground. One falling shark flies directly toward the remaining members of the group. Fin jumps into its mouth with a chainsaw and cuts his way out. He emerges carrying an unconscious but otherwise unharmed Nova. Matt is reunited with Nova, and Fin gets back together with April. Sharknado was directed for film studio The Asylum by Anthony C. Ferrantewhose previous directing credits include the horror film Booand written by Thunder Levin, whose previous writing credits include the film Mutant Vampire Zombies from the 'Hood! When his friend Ferrante said that he had been approached to direct the film, Rist insisted that Ferrante take the job. Rist was given a small role in the film and composed the theme. Actress Tara Reid said of the film, "It is silly, and there's only a certain amount of barriers you could go into. You can't take it so seriously when it's absolutely the sharks flying in the sky. It's so out there that it's actually really funny. In an interview with Uproxx's Danger Guerrero, Ferrante summarized the film's plot: "There's a flood. And a storm. Don't worry about it. The premiere of the film was watched by 1. Due to an increase in publicity mostly through TwitterSyfy repeated Sharknado on Thursday, July 18,one week after its premiere. That airing was watched by 1. A representative of the Lets Read! The Shark in the Dark Weather Service jokingly recommended what to do in case of a sharknado, saying: "As with any waterspout or tornado, the best advice is to be in an interior part of the lowest floor of a sturdy building — and not outside, whether sharks are raining down or not. Regal Cinemas announced that at midnight on August 2,it would play the film in roughly theaters nationally. Syfy and The Asylum announced in August that Sharknado merchandise would be made available, including T-shirts and potentially other products, such as costumes, bags and posters. The site's consensus states: "Proudly, shamelessly, and gloriously brainless, Sharknado redefines 'so bad it's good' for a new generation. Reviewer Mary McNamara, writing for the Los Angeles Timesmentioned that the plot holes are "the whole point of movies like this: fabulous in-home commentary. Often accompanied by the consumption of many alcoholic beverages. And you won't want to.

Television Sharknados and Twitter Storms: Cult Film Fan Practices in the Age of Social Media Branding Stephen William Hay A thesis submitted to Victoria University of Wellington in fulfilment of the regulations for the degree of Master of Arts in Media Studies Victoria University of Wellington 2016 Abstract This thesis examines the Syfy channel’s broadcast of the television movie Sharknado and the large number of tweets that were sent about it. Sharknado’s audience engaged in cult film viewing practices that can be understood using paracinema theory. Paracinema engagement with cult films has traditionally taken place in midnight screenings in independent movie theatres and private homes. Syfy’s audience was able to engage in paracinematic activity that included making jokes about Sharknado’s low quality of production and interacting with others who were doing the same through the affordances of Twitter. In an age where branding has become increasingly important, Syfy clearly benefited from all the fan activity around its programming. Critical branding theory argues that the value generated by a business’s brand comes from the labour of consumers. Brand management is mostly about encouraging and managing consumer labour. The online shift of fan practices has created new opportunities for brand managers to subsume the activities of consumers. Cult film audience practices often have an emphasis on creatively and collectively engaging in rituals and activities around a text. These are the precise qualities that brands require from their consumers. Sharknado was produced and marketed by Syfy to invoke the cult film subculture as part of Syfy’s branding strategy.

  • Sharknado Social Media Analysis with SAP HANA and Predictive Analysis
Sharknado Social Media Analysis with SAP HANA and Predictive Analysis Mining social media data for customer feedback is perhaps one of the greatest untapped opportunities for customer analysis in many organizations today. Social media data is freely available and allows organizations to personally identify and interact directly with customers to resolve any potential dissatisfaction. In today’s blog post, I’ll discuss using SAP Data Services, SAP HANA, and SAP Predictive Analysis to collect, process, visualize, and analyze social media data related to the recent social media phenomenon Sharknado. Collecting Social Media Data with SAP Data Services While I’ll be focusing primarily on the analysis of social media data in this blog post, social media data can be collected from any source with an open API by using Python scripting within a User-Defined Transform. In this example, I’ve collected Twitter data using the basic outline provided by SAP in the Data Services Text Data Processing Blueprints available on the SAP Community Network, updated it for the REST version 1.1 Twitter API. This process consists of 2 dataflows, the first tracks search terms and constructs (Get_Search_Tasks transform) and executes (Search_Twitter transform) a Twitter search query to store the data pictured below. In addition to the raw text of the tweet, some metadata is available, including user name, time, and location information (if the user has made it publicly available). Once the raw tweet data has been collected, I can use either the Text Data Processing transform in SAP Data Services or the Voice of Customer text analysis process in SAP HANA.

  • 'Sharknado' Hits California Hard, Internet Even Harder
‘Sharknado’ Hits California Hard, Internet Even Harder Chris Nichols The Exchange July 12, 2013 If something could actually break the social Web because of extreme overexposure -- as the Harlem Shake taught us, it can't -- the "Sharknado" rage of the moment would be a candidate to do it. The Syfy original movie, which aired Thursday night, became a dominant force on the Internet during its airing and afterward, with Twitter and search traffic levels suggesting cancer had been cured or an intelligent alien species found. Image from Sharknado On Twitter itself, there was no escaping #sharknado. According to one report, the peak activity was about 5,000 tweets a minute right before 11 p.m. E.T., when "Sharknado" was concluding. Google Trends also showed quite an interest, with "Sharknado" collecting more than 500,000 searches July 11. Starring Ian Ziering, best known for his 1990s work on "Beverly Hills, 90210," and Tara Reid, of "American Pie" fame, "Sharknado" is the story of a terrible and powerful Pacific Ocean hurricane, one spawning tornadic winds that scooped up sharks by the hundreds and deposited them along the California coast, where naturally they feasted on the residents of greater Los Angeles. The still image from a Syfy clip here shows how serious the matter was. [Related: See the 'Sharknado' Storify experience] Many people were consumed. A Ferris wheel broke loose. Explosives were dropped into the storms to show them who's boss. Ziering used a chainsaw. He later told CBSNews: "When I read the scene where I'm actually chainsawing my way out of the belly of a shark, how could a guy turn that down when that's in the job description?" He couldn't.
