Kerckhoff, Duke University 79th Southern Sociological Society Annual Meetings 2 PRESIDENT’S WELCOME MESSSAGE Welcome to the Ritz Carlton in Buckhead, Atlanta, GA 79th Annual Meeting Southern Sociological Society Welcome to Atlanta! I write to you at a moment when the SSS leadership is working very hard to convince the Governor of Georgia not to sign an anti-gay bill. We have decided to meet here whatever happens because all of you have planned your trips, and many have Barbara Risman bought plane tickets. Be assured, however, if Georgia or any other SSS President state passes laws to discriminate against any of us, we will not hold 2015-2016 future conferences in such a state. Indeed, we’ve added escape clauses to our future hotel contracts to allow us to break the contract without penalty if the state passes anti-discrimination laws. So relax, and enjoy this conference, knowing SSS is committed to social justice and will not support economies of states that are not. If HB 757 has passed, I promise there will be some social movement activity for you to join in – at the meetings- if you so choose. But now back to the show. I hope you take the time to look thru the program (whether yours is physical or the App) and plan your schedule. There are so many wonderful sessions, and interesting speakers, you’ll have to organize your time effectively to enjoy the conference to its fullest. Here’s hoping you learn quite a lot about The Politics of Marriage. Ironic isn’t it, that the theme of the meetings is being echoed in the politics of the state of Georgia? And so, it’s quite clear that even if this isn’t your research area, we all live in a world where the norms, rules, and laws affecting our intimate relationships are changing quickly, and knowing what the research suggests may help us in our personal and political as well as professional lives. We’ve worked hard to bring you an exciting program. And to bring you a really enjoyable conference experience. Enjoy the jam session Wednesday night, the graduate student mixer Meet the Candidate party on Thursday evening, and come dance after the Awards Ceremony and Presidential Address. If you are still with us on Saturday at the end of the day, join us at a final reception for the mini-conference on teaching sponsored by Norton Publishers. If we haven’t met, please introduce yourself. I have felt honored to be the President of SSS, and hope that you enjoy the program constructed by our marvelous co-chairs, Patricia Warren and Adia Harvey Wingfield. Our whole team welcomes you to Atlanta!!!! And now it all begins! Barbara J.
