World Latin American Agenda 2016
World Latin American Agenda 2016 In its category, the Latin American book most widely distributed inside and outside the Americas each year. A sign of continental and global communion among individuals and communities excited by and committed to the Great Causes of the Patria Grande. An Agenda that expresses the hope of the world’s poor from a Latin American perspective. A manual for creating a different kind of globalization. A collection of the historical memories of militancy. An anthology of solidarity and creativity. A pedagogical tool for popular education, communication and social action. From the Great Homeland to the Greater Homeland. Our cover image by Maximino CEREZO BARREDO. See all our history, 25 years long, through our covers, at: latinoamericana.org/digital /desde1992.jpg and through the PDF files, at: latinoamericana.org/digital This year we remind you... We put the accent on vision, on attitude, on awareness, on education... Obviously, we aim at practice. However our “charisma” is to provoke the transformations of awareness necessary so that radically new practices might arise from another systemic vision and not just reforms or patches. We want to ally ourselves with all those who search for that transformation of conscience. We are at its service. This Agenda wants to be, as always and even more than at other times, a box of materials and tools for popular education. latinoamericana.org/2016/info is the web site we have set up on the network in order to offer and circulate more material, ideas and pedagogical resources than can economically be accommo- dated in this paper version. -

Title of Thesis: ABSTRACT CLASSIFYING BIAS
ABSTRACT Title of Thesis: CLASSIFYING BIAS IN LARGE MULTILINGUAL CORPORA VIA CROWDSOURCING AND TOPIC MODELING Team BIASES: Brianna Caljean, Katherine Calvert, Ashley Chang, Elliot Frank, Rosana Garay Jáuregui, Geoffrey Palo, Ryan Rinker, Gareth Weakly, Nicolette Wolfrey, William Zhang Thesis Directed By: Dr. David Zajic, Ph.D. Our project extends previous algorithmic approaches to finding bias in large text corpora. We used multilingual topic modeling to examine language-specific bias in the English, Spanish, and Russian versions of Wikipedia. In particular, we placed Spanish articles discussing the Cold War on a Russian-English viewpoint spectrum based on similarity in topic distribution. We then crowdsourced human annotations of Spanish Wikipedia articles for comparison to the topic model. Our hypothesis was that human annotators and topic modeling algorithms would provide correlated results for bias. However, that was not the case. Our annotators indicated that humans were more perceptive of sentiment in article text than topic distribution, which suggests that our classifier provides a different perspective on a text’s bias. Political Dilemmas of the Modern Colonies of the Caribbean Aaron
Islands at the Crossroads: Political Dilemmas of the Modern Colonies of the Caribbean Aaron Gamaliel Ramos 24th Annual Conference, Caribbean Studies Association Panama, May 24-28, 1999 Communications: Aaron Gamaliel Ramos, Department of Social Sciences, Faculty of General Studies, University of Puerto Rico, San Juan, PR 0093 1. Email: [email protected] ramosaaron~hotmail.com Islands at the Crossroads: Political Dilemmas of the Modern Colonies of the Caribbean Aaron Gamaliel Ramos The colonies that remain in the Caribbean stand at their second historical crossroads since becoming residues of the decolonization process underwent after the end of World War 2. The end of the Cold War, the reordering of the world of nations, and increasing unconformity with existing colonial arrangements have created new dilemmas for both metropolitan and colonial actors in the remaining colonial territories of the Caribbean. Currently there are 12 colonies in the region which are the remains of the decolonization process that took place after World War 11.: three French Departements d'Outre Mer: Guadeloupe, Martinique, and Guyane; the British dependencies of Anguilla, Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Montserrat, Turks & Caicos; the Dutch colonial system composed of Aruba and a the Dutch Antilles (which are formed by the island of Cura~ao, Bonaire, Sint Maarten, Sint Eustatius, and Saba); and two territories of the United States: Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands. The political re-arrangements in the colonial structures that were made after World War 2 were largely influenced by a twofold process. For one, the decolonization process in general revealed the precarious conditions of Old World colonial powers after the war and the strength of Caribbean nationalism. -

A Prophetic Challenge to the Church
15-10-13 A Prophetic Challenge to the Church A Prophetic Challenge to the Church: The Last Word of Bartolomé de las Casas Luis N. Rivera-Pagán We were always loyal to lost causes . Success is for us the death of the intellect and of the imagination. Ulysses (1922) James Joyce Perhaps there is a dignity in defeat that hardly belongs to victory. This Craft of Verse (1967) Jorge Luis Borges To see the possibility, the certainty, of ruin, even at the moment of creation; it was my temperament. The Enigma of Arrival (1987) V. S. Naipaul To the memory of Richard Shaull (1919-2002), first Henry Winters Luce Professor in Ecumenics When things fall apart In 1566, after more than five decades of immense and exhausting endeavors to influence and shape the policy of the Spanish state and church regarding the Americas, years of drafting countless historical texts, theological treatises, colonization projects, prophetic homilies, juridical complaints, political utopias, and even apocalyptic visions, Bartolomé de las Casas knows very well that the end is at hand: the end of his life and the end of his illusions of crafting a just and Christian empire in the New World. It is a moment of searching for the precise closure, the right culmination and consummation of a human existence that since 1502 had been intimately linked, as no other person of his time, to the drama of the conquest and Christianization of Latin America, a continent, as has been so aptly asserted, “born in blood and fire.” He painfully knows that there will be no time to finish his opus magnum, the History of the Indies. -
