He is married and has a daughter. Wendy J. Porter is Associate Professor of Music and Worship at McMaster Divinity College. She teaches courses in Ministry Studies in areas of wor- ship studies, liturgy, spiritual discernment, and theological rezection on the intersection of faith, work, and worship, and she plans and leads cha- pels throughout the academic year with a team of talented and committed graduate students. Jennifer Powell McNutt is the Franklin S. Dyrness Associate Professor of Biblical & eological Studies at Wheaton College. She has received awards for her teaching and scholarship including the Frank S. and Elizabeth D. Brewer Prize by the American Society of Church History for her mono- graph, Calvin Meets Voltaire: !e Clergy of Geneva in the Age of Enlighten- ment, "2#3–"4$# (Ashgate, 23/8). She is a Fellow in the Royal Historical Society as well as an ordained minister in the Presbyterian Church (USA). Victor Shepherd , a minister of the Presbyterian Church in Canada, is Pro- fessor Emeritus at Tyndale University, Professorial Fellow (Core Faculty) at Wycli~e College (University of Toronto), and Professor Ordinarius at Uni- versity of Oxford, UK. A specialist in Reformation eology and History, he has addressed audiences in Canada, the USA, and Great Britain. As a student of Christian Anti-Semitism he is a frequent speaker in synagogues, churches, and high schools. Luther has eleven months to live. He is not terminally Iill. He has, however, been convicted of high treason, a capital o~ence. Anyone assisting him will also be deemed treasonous and, if caught, ex- ecuted. Condemned by the Pope as a heretic since />23, he has been an outlaw of the Holy Roman Empire since />2/. Anyone who assassinates him will be rewarded. He can never forget that life is short and death is sure. Now he is reviewing his vast written output, @ne-tuning theological expositions that have convulsed Europe, infuriated church authorities, pro- voked academic debate, and above all comforted millions as they found themselves newly assured that the arms of the cruci@ed Savior held them securely in a grip on them that would always be stronger than their grip on him. At this time—March />8>—Luther is revisiting the complete edition of his Latin writings. While his Latin writings span decades, the preface to them is new, and one of the last items he will pen. Listen to him as he takes us back to an earlier moment in his life and theological career: I had indeed been captivated with an extraordinary ardor for un- derstanding Paul in the Epistle to the Romans . a single word in chapter /[:/7], ‘In it the righteousness of God is revealed’ . had stood in my way. For I hated that word ‘righteousness of God,’ which, according to the use and custom of all the teachers, I had // T R been taught to understand philosophically regarding the formal or active righteousness, as they called it, with which God is righteous and punishes sinners. I hated the righteous God who punishes sinners, and secretly . I was angry with God . the gospel threat - ening us with his righteousness and wrath. us I raged with a @erce and troubled conscience. At last, by the mercy of God, meditating day and night, I gave heed to the context of the words . ‘He who through faith is righteous shall live.’ ere I began to understand that the righteousness of God . by which the righteous lives, is a gi of God, namely faith. Here I felt that I was altogether born again and had entered paradise itself through open gates. ere a totally other face of the entire Scripture showed itself to me. ereupon . I also found in other terms an analogy, as, the work of God, that is, what God does in us, the power of God, with which he makes us strong, the wisdom of God, with which he makes us wise. 1 What had been Luther’s experience prior to this moment when the righ- teousness of God, so far from being that gi of God, owned in faith, which renders sinners rightly related to him, had instead been understood to be unrelieved condemnation that God, righteous in himself, visited upon hopelessly guilty sinners forever unrighteous in themselves? HIS EARLY YEARS Luther’s experience, circumstantially his alone, inwardly appeared no dif- ferent from the experience of humankind. For instance, death looms for everyone. One hundred-and-@y years before Luther’s era, the Black Death (bubonic plague) had carried o~ 83 percent to 8> percent of Europe. ree of Luther’s friends had recently succumbed to a fresh outbreak. Only days ago one of his best friends died suddenly. Hunting one day with a compan- ion, Luther accidentally fell on his dagger, severing an artery. He pressed his hand in his groin to stem the haemorrhage while his companion procured help, aware that he had come within a hair’s breadth of death. Later, when Luther was walking near the town of Stotternheim, a thunderstorm over- took him.

This paper will survey representative interpretations of this concept in the historical Jesus literature, and attempt to situate Jesus understanding of “the rule of God” within the spectrum of Greco-Roman and hellenistic Jewish political thought, with special reference to the works of Josephus and Philo. In particular, Jesus’ use of the phrase will be considered as one of several hellenistic Jewish responses to the loss of native rule, and examine the implications of the concept for the application of the term “messiah” to the historical Jesus. 8:30-9:00 David Miller (McMaster University) “Orality, Written Texts and the Locus of Authority in Luke- Acts” In this paper, I will argue that Luke’s assumptions about communication challenge a prominent scholarly model of the formation of the Jesus tradition. The relationship between the oral teaching of Jesus, the oral transmission of Jesus’ sayings by the church, and the written Gospels will be analyzed through a study of references to written texts and oral communication in Luke-Acts.
