NATURAL LAKE SHORELINE SWAMP (LAKE WACCAMAW SUBTYPE) Concept: Type covers tree-dominated vegetated wetland vegetation on the shores of medium to large permanent natural lakes. It extends inland to where the effect of lake hydrology on vegetation is replaced by the hydrology of the surrounding area, either upland or wetland. Subtype covers the unique calcareous example at Lake Waccamaw. The vegetation resembles that of the Cypress Subtype but has a distinctive and richer flora. Sites: Wetland zones along the shore of Lake Waccamaw, influenced by the calcareous waters, generally flooded much of the time by lake waters but exposed at low water levels. Soils: A specific soil series is not mapped, but soils are sand, presumably worked by wave action. Hydrology: Permanently to seasonally flooded. Water levels may vary over periods of a few years, in response to weather cycles. Vegetation: Open woodland of Taxodium ascendens. There are a few shrubs, including Alnus serrulata, Cephalanthus occidentalis, and Cyrilla racemiflora. The herb layer is patchy, with dense beds of graminoids, areas of sparse emergent or submersed plants, and a number of species that are visible only when water levels are low and the shoreline is exposed. The denser areas are dominated by Panicum hemitomon and Cladium mariscoides. Dominants in smaller patches include Eleocharis olivacea, Sclerolepis uniflora, and Centella erecta, and Boltonia asteroides and Ludwigia sphaerocarpa are abundant. CONTRIBUTIONS OF INTENSIVELY MANAGED FORESTS TO THE SUSTAINABILITY OF WILDLIFE COMMUNITIES IN THE SOUTH T. Bently Wigley1, William M. Baughman, Michael E. Dorcas, John A. Gerwin, J. Russell ABSTRACT Wildlife communities in the South are increasingly influenced by land use changes associated with human population growth and changes in forest management strategies on both public and private lands. Management of industry-owned landscapes typically results in a diverse mixture of habitat types and spatial arrangements that simultaneously offers opportunities to maintain forest cover, address concerns about fragmentation, and provide habitats for a variety of wildlife species. We report here on several recent studies of breeding bird and herpetofaunal communities in industry-managed landscapes in South Carolina. Study landscapes included the 8,100-ha GilesBay/Woodbury Tract, owned and managed by International Paper Company, and 62,363-ha of the Ashley and Edisto Districts, owned and managed by Westvaco Corporation. Breeding birds were sampled in both landscapes from 1995-1999 using point counts, mist netting, nest searching, and territory mapping. A broad survey of herpetofauna was conducted during 1996-1998 across the Giles Bay/Woodbury Tract using a variety of methods, including: searches of natural cover objects, time-constrained searches, drift fences with pitfall traps, coverboards, automated recording systems, minnow traps, and turtle traps. Herpetofaunal communities were sampled more intensively in both landscapes during 1997-1999 in isolated wetland and selected structural classes. The study landscapes supported approximately 70 bird and 72 herpetofaunal species, some of which are of conservation concern. -

FEATURE: ENDANGERED SPECIES Conservation Status of Imperiled North American Freshwater and Diadromous Fishes ABSTRACT: This is the third compilation of imperiled (i.e., endangered, threatened, vulnerable) plus extinct freshwater and diadromous fishes of North America prepared by the American Fisheries Society’s Endangered Species Committee. Since the last revision in 1989, imperilment of inland fishes has increased substantially. This list includes 700 extant taxa representing 133 genera and 36 families, a 92% increase over the 364 listed in 1989. The increase reflects the addition of distinct populations, previously non-imperiled fishes, and recently described or discovered taxa. Approximately 39% of described fish species of the continent are imperiled. There are 230 vulnerable, 190 threatened, and 280 endangered extant taxa, and 61 taxa presumed extinct or extirpated from nature. Of those that were imperiled in 1989, most (89%) are the same or worse in conservation status; only 6% have improved in status, and 5% were delisted for various reasons. Habitat degradation and nonindigenous species are the main threats to at-risk fishes, many of which are restricted to small ranges. Documenting the diversity and status of rare fishes is a critical step in identifying and implementing appropriate actions necessary for their protection and management. Howard L. MALLARD DID YOU KNOW? Every Mecklenburg County creek except two starts in Mecklenburg. Mecklenburg County has 3,000 miles of creeks and streams. CREEK Two-thirds of Mecklenburg County is in the Catawba River watershed, and the creeks flow into Lake Norman, Mountain Island Lake, Lake Wylie or other parts of the Catawba River. The eastern third of Mecklenburg County is in the Yadkin-Pee Dee watershed. Those creeks eventually flow into the Pee Dee River. A “perennial” stream typically has water flowing in it year-round. Most of the water comes from smaller streams that flow in, or from groundwater, with some additional water from rain or other precipitation. Until the creeks became polluted, people swam in them, fished in them and got water from them. Mecklenburg County has 126 named creeks. This includes creeks whose name is “tributary of.” When the term “impaired,” is used for water, it means the body of water does not meet the standards that environmental laws set for it. What lives in a healthy creek? Aquatic life, which can include fish, small invertebrates such as snails and crawfish, insect larvae, tadpoles, plankton and algae. The cleaner the water, the more life in the creek. Current abundances and uncertainty about population characteristics of blue catfish generated concern for other economically important and imperiled species. We estimated natural mor- tality and size structure of blue catfish for four tidal river systems (i.e., James, Mattaponi, Pamunkey and Rappahannock). Using common empirical estimators with pooled data from the period 2002–2016, we calculated five estimates of natural mortality. Proportional size distributions were used to examine changes in size structure over time. Maximum observed age of 25 years indicated mature populations. Estimated mean instantaneous natural mortality (M) from five empirical estimators ranged from 0.13–0.19 in the four rivers. Temporal trends in size structure differed among rivers, likely due to differences in stocking timing and riverine productivity. Proportions of memorable and trophy size blue catfish appear to have recently declined in three of four rivers, but size-structure indices demonstrated continued viability of the James River trophy fishery. -
