Mv Love .................................................................................285 The Seabirds are Still Alive............................................................... 286 The SaltEaters..................................................................................... 287 vi PREFACE Any good West Indian cook knows that to make a pot of Kalaloo serve as a healthy and digestible meal with a lasting taste, he or she must add to the pot a variety of meats and blend native seasonings and herbs to give the soup its characteristic West-Indian flavor. In addition, a good cook will be most careful not to allow any of the meats or seasonings to lose their natural taste in the cooking process, that when the Kalaloo is served, each ingredient will have its own texture and flavor different from another; however, the soup itself must have the flavor of all the meats and the seasonings. I find Toni Cade Bambara’s fiction is made like the West Indian Kalaloo; it is seasoned with a variety of elements from Black folklore and each element is distinguished in the language to give a particular quality to the work. In the story or in the novel, these elements blend to produce a flavor of Black culture. Black American folklore, as we know, figures prominently in the works of Black writers, for as Houston A. Baker Jr. writes in Black Literature in America "literary artists from Paul Lawrence Dunbar.. .have made use of its values, forms, and techniques" (20). I maintain, however, that Toni Cade Bambara has a special way of structuring Black folklore to give her fiction

For more than 30 years, the Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship (MMUF) program has endeavored to promote diversity in the faculty of higher education, specifically by supporting thousands of students from underrepresented minority groups in their goal of obtaining PhDs. With the MMUF Journal, we provide an additional opportunity for students to experience academia through exposure to the publishing process. In addition to providing an audience for student work, the journal offers an introduction to the publishing process, including peer review and editor-guided revision of scholarly work. For the majority of students, the MMUF Journal is their first experience in publishing a scholarly article. The 2018 Journal features writing by 27 authors from 22 colleges and universities that are part of the program’s member institutions.     Introduction: You've Got to Be Jazzistic hriving on a Riff is a contribution to the growing body of work on jazz, I blues, and their multiple influences in other forms of African American and American culture. The provisional term for this relatively new area of dis• course is jazz studies, although there may be a case for Sun Ra's tongue-in-cheek neologism "jazzisticology," which (considered etymologically) appears to mean the study of the "jazzistic," in other words, that which aspires, or pertains, to being like, about, or in the style of, jazz.1 While jazzisticology seems unlikely to catch on, it does have the advantage of marking a distinction between the study of jazz itself (in a nuts-and-bolts musicological sense) and the study of things that are jazz related. Thriving on a Riff belongs to the latter category and sharpens its focus further to examine two of the many cultural forms affected by African American music: literature and film. While that music has become hugely popular and influential far beyond the communities that produced it, its role within African American culture has been especially profound. Numerous black writers have confirmed this: from James Baldwin's bald assertion, "It is only in his music ... that the Negro in America has been able to tell his story," to Bob Kaufman's more poetic coinage: Dirt of a world covers me My secret heart Beating to unheard jazz.2 This recognition of the music's crucial importance, both to African American culture and beyond, can be traced back to W.

    Yale College Education Studies Program Senior Capstone Projects Student Research Spring 2020 Beyond Inclusion: An In-Depth Analysis of Teaching of Audre Lorde, Toni Cade Bambara, June Jordan, and Adrienne Rich Sarah Mele Yale College, New Haven Connecticut Abstract: This capstone will analyze interventions into university pedagogy based on the teaching practices of Audre Lorde, Toni Cade Bambara, June Jordan, and Adrienne Rich. It begins with a historical introduction to the role of these four women in university activism in the late 1960s and early 1970s inside and outside the classroom. Analysis of the development of Black Studies and university pedagogy since this time reveals gaps in the fulfillment of the student-driven movement’s goal that are still extremely relevant to questions of institutional power and access today. Next, this paper provides concrete pedagogical and methodological strategies for present day university teaching grounded in the work of these four revolutionary women. This portion will pull from archival research of teaching materials, notes, and correspondence as well as subsequent scholarship on pedagogy. Suggested Citation: Mele, S. (2020).     Toni Cade Bambara Biography Quick Facts * 1939-1995 Toni Cade Bambara, born Miltona Mirkin Cade on March 25, 1939, lived the first ten years of her life in Harlem. Bambara credits the Harlem * African- community as having a significant influence on her writing. She learned American writer, the power of the word from “the speakers on Speaker’s Corner in Har- filmmaker, lem” (Tate 28). She also credits the musicians of the forties and fifties activist, and with giving her “voice and pace and pitch” (Tate 29). While living on feminist 151st Street between Broadway and Amsterdam, Miltona changed her * First published name to “Toni” around kindergarten. The richly diverse population of the fictional work was area contributed much to Bambara’s life lessons. Always willing to “stop Gorilla, My Love and talk,” Bambara “adopted people” to fill the place in her life for rela- tives, especially grandmothers (Deep Sightings 208-209). Although the neighborhood was instrumental in forming an important part of Bambara’s identity, the author says her greatest influence and inspiration was her mother: “My mother had great respect for the life of the mind” (Deep Sightings 212). In a poignant dedication to her mother in The Salt Eaters, Bambara writes: “Mama, Helen Brent Henderson Cade Brehon, who in 1948, having come upon me daydreaming in the middle of the kitchen floor, mopped around me.” In 1959, Toni Cade graduated from Queen’s College with a B.A. in Theater Arts/English. For her first published short story, “Sweet Town,” she received the John Golden Award for fiction.

Questioning one's own sanity. Weird time signatures. Experimental sounds. In 1973, Pink Floyd was a somewhat known progressive rock band, but it was this, their ninth album, that catapulted them into world class rock-star status. “The Dark Side of the Moon” spent an astonishing 14 years on the “Billboard” album charts, and sold an estimated 45 million copies. It is a work of outstanding artistry, skill, and craftsmanship that is popular in its reach and experimental in its grasp. An engineering masterpiece, the album received a Grammy nomination for best engineered non-classical recording, based on beautifully captured instrumental tones and a warm, lush soundscape. Engineer Alan Parsons and Mixing Supervisor Chris Thomas, who had worked extensively with The Beatles (the LP was mastered by engineer Wally Traugott), introduced a level of sonic beauty and clarity to the album that propelled the music off of any sound system to become an all- encompassing, immersive experience. In his 1973 review, Lloyd Grossman wrote in “Rolling Stone” magazine that Pink Floyd’s members comprised “preeminent techno-rockers: four musicians with a command of electronic instruments who wield an arsenal of sound effects with authority and finesse.” The used their command to create a work that introduced several generations of listeners to art-rock and to elements of 1950s cool jazz. Some reharmonization of chords (as on “Breathe”) was inspired by Miles Davis, explained keyboardist Rick Wright.
