Reg. 170/03 Section 11 Reporting Description of the Holland Landing Drinking Water System About Holland Landing Holland Landing is a village in the Town of East Gwillimbury, located in the northern part of York Region. It sits roughly between Yonge St, Highway 11, Mount Albert Road and Queensville Sideroad. York Region manages the water supply of two wells, two elevated storage tanks and one booster pumping station. Lake Ontario water is also supplied from the south by the York Drinking Water System (York DWS). The Town of East Gwillimbury maintains and distributes the water to consumers from the Regional supply. The Holland Landing Drinking Water Sub-System is part of an interconnecting system between Aurora, Holland Landing, Queensville, Newmarket and the larger York DWS. Connection to the York DWS reduces demand on the aquifers and provides a secure secondary source of drinking water. Raw Water Source Description Ground water taking is regulated by a Permit to Take Water issued by the Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change. The City of Toronto and Peel Region have permits for taking Lake Ontario water. Supply agreements govern the purchase of water from the City of Toronto and Peel Region. Two wells extract groundwater from a deep aquifer. Iron, manganese and hardness levels are naturally elevated, which is common in deep aquifers across York Region. Staff use raw water test results to monitor the health of the aquifer and determine the best water treatment. Water Treatment and Supply Disinfection is maintained with chlorine gas and ammonia (chloramine). Sodium silicate is added to manage iron and manganese in the distribution system. The storage facilities hold water for peak demand use, and maintain pressure in the system. The booster pumping station also maintains pressure. In addition to routine water testing and facility inspections by Operators, online analyzers continuously monitor the treatment and delivery processes. These analyzers trigger alarms and automatically shut down and lockout pumps to notify Operators when immediate attention is needed on site.     A Brief History of the Town of Newmarket In June, 1800, Timothy Rogers, a Vermont Quaker, explored the area around the Holland River and up to Lake Simcoe to find a suitable location for a contemplated Quaker settlement. The Quakers were disturbed as a result of difficulties encountered when this peaceful sect refused to take part in the rioting and bloodshed of the American Revolutionists. In 1801, Rogers, leading several Quaker families, left their homes in Vermont and Pennsylvania and secured land grants of 8,000 acres located at the east end of lots 93, 94, and 95 along Yonge Street in the former Townships of Whitchurch and King. It was easy for them to see the potential in these fertile rolling lands, through which flowed the Holland River, an important trading artery for both aboriginals and fur traders. Having arrived in the spring, these first Quaker settlers immediately began the arduous task of clearing the land for their homes and farms. Indeed, By Christmas of 1801, Joseph Hill had constructed a mill on the Holland River at what is now Fairy Lake, around which the settlement to be known as Newmarket sprouted. Over the years, Mr. Hill Hill Trading Post, also built a tannery and the first store and house, as well Main and Water Streets, as additional mills. It is unfortunate that this enterprising 1801 man, embittered over the terms of an 1804 sale of the north half of lot 93 to Elisha Beman, returned saddened and disappointed to the United States in 1812. Elisha Beman, through his marriage to Esther Sayre Robinson, the widow of Christopher Robinson, a distinguished United Empire Loyalist and member of the Legislative Assembly, gained an entree to the establishment and preferential treatment through the Family Compact.

    Clause No. 9 in Report No. 9 of Committee of the Whole was adopted, without amendment, by the Council of The Regional Municipality of York at its meeting held on May 15, 2014. 9 CONSTRUCTION OF BATHURST STREET FROM GREEN LANE WEST TO SOUTH OF HIGHWAY 11, TOWN OF EAST GWILLIMBURY AND TOWNSHIP OF KING Committee of the Whole recommends adoption of the following recommendations contained in the report dated April 16, 2014 from the Commissioner of Transportation and Community Planning: 1. RECOMMENDATIONS 1. Council endorse restoring the schedule for reconnection of Bathurst Street (Y.R. 38) between Green Lane West (Y.R. 19) and south of Highway 11 (Y.R. 1) to start in early 2015. 2. The lands acquired by the Region to construct the realigned Bathurst Street (Y.R. 38) through the Highway 11 (Y.R. 1) and Holland Landing Road (Y.R. 83) intersections be designated as public highway to form part of Bathurst Street (Y.R. 38) upon completion of construction. 3. The existing Two-Way Stop Control on Bathurst Street (Y.R. 38) at Holland Landing Road (Y.R. 83) in the Town of East Gwillimbury be changed to an All-Way Stop Control. 4. The existing speed limit of 80 km/h on Bathurst Street (Y.R. 38) from 1,877 meters north of Green Lane West (Y.R. 19) to Highway 11 (Y.R. 1) in the Township of King be reduced to 60 km/h. 5.
