When Sex and the City ended in 2004 fans were desperate for more and this year, one way or an- other, they’re getting it. On the one hand you have a Sex and the City movie set to be released in May. On the other hand you’ve got two new primetime shows currently on the air with producers from Sex and the City behind both. While the movie is sure to be a hit with the popular series’ rabid fan base, the jury is still out on how the far tamer network shows will fair. Darren Star’s new show Cashmere Mafia hit ABC’s airwaves at the beginning of January. The series follows the lives of four ambitious women who met in business school and continue to be best friends while juggling their careers and love lives. Lucy Liu plays Mia Mason, a successful publisher who was dumped by her fiancé (Tom Everett Scott) after she received a promotion over him. She has her BFFs to console her, but each of them has issues too. Zoe Burden (Frances O’Connor) is married with two small children and, with the added pressure of being a high-powered investment banker, finds herself being stretched too thin, causing her performance to suffer in all arenas. Meanwhile, Juliet Draper (Miranda Otto), the Chief Operating Officer of a major hotel chain, discovers her husband (Peter Hermann) has been having an affair and must decide what to do about it. Then there’s Caitlin Dowd (Bonnie Sommer- ville), a top exec at a cosmetics firm who realizes that she may be a lesbian after falling for her compa- ny’s new ad rep (Lourdes Benedicto). NBC and Sex and the City co-producer/author Candace Bushnell unveiled their series Lipstick Jungle last week. The show is nearly identical to Cashmere Mafia in tone and subject matter, which puts it at an immediate disadvantage since Cashmere Mafia has already aired five episodes and established itself among the target audience. NBC’s show centers around three highly successful best friends who are determined to have it all but have to deal with plenty of obstacles standing in their way. Wendy Healy (Brooke Shields) is a big shot film executive whose marriage is on shaky ground because her husband (Paul Blackthorne) feels overshadowed by her success. Fashion magazine editor-in-chief Nico Reilly (Kim Raver) is also experiencing some marital roadblocks. Her husband is so consumed with his own job that he barely notices she’s alive, a problem she’s forced to face head on when a hot younger guy (Robert Buckley) begins lavishing her with attention. Finally there’s free-spirited designer Victory Ford (Lindsay Price), a talented clothing designer whose latest line bombs on the runways at Fashion Week. She’s con- soled by a multi-billionaire suitor (Andrew McCarthy) whose grand gestures make her both uncomfort- able and intrigued at the same time. That last bit should be a joke, but it’s not. Clearly, both shows are dead even in the highly-unrealistic and too-soapy-for-their-own-good de- partments and need to do much better in the ratings to stand a chance at making it beyond their first seasons. But the biggest problem facing them is that they just aren’t Sex and the City. The shows lack the humor and creativity that made the HBO series great. Still, both Cashmere Mafia and Lipstick Jungle are good for some shallow, guilty pleasure TV-watching and, currently adrift in a sea of reality shows due to the writer’s strike, that’s exactly what many people are looking for right now. In this early stage of the game Cashmere Mafia is the better of the two shows if only for consistently great performances from Mi- randa Otto and Lucy Liu. It’s a slight lead that Lipstick Jungle has a chance to overcome as new episodes air. Cashmere Mafia can be seen on Wednesday nights at 10 pm on ABC. You can catch NBC’s Lipstick Jungle on Thursdays at 10 pm. Full episodes of both shows can be found online at ABC.com and NBC. com respectively.

This is strictly anatomical research- all about your all-important pumper. What’s good for your heart? Well, that’s obvious and rather boring. Regular exercise, plenty of sleep and a healthy diet consisting of a lot of fruits and vegetables are the norm, but let’s steer this conversa- tion in a negative direction. Let’s talk about the things that are supposedly “bad for your heart.” traffi c http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/3761012.stm Why is it that the new “this will kill you” thing is almost always a product of a German study? They’re so bleak! Apparently, Deita and Company have concluded that traffi c causes stress. Stop. Really? That blows my mind. Danke very much, because based on the white knuckled fi sts, a multitude of middle fi ngers and a symphony of horns that we hear on our ride to work every day, we weren’t really sure. So, stay out of traffi c and check one off for the ol’ ticker. caffeine www.webmd.com/mental-health/news/20020801/is-caffeine-bad-for-your- heart We can thank the over-reaching do-gooders at Duke for this one. Apparently, when they aren’t plan- ning a good party with the lacrosse team, they’re fi nding something that I adore and telling me I shouldn’t have it. So caffeine is bad for the heart. It’s not shaping up well for me- I sit in traffi c every morning and rush to the coffeemaker upon arriving to work. Then I usually complain for ten minutes about how no- body in the offi ce can make a decent pot of coffee. Don’t think I haven’t been pitched the alternatives either. The resident vegetarian and vocal health food advocate is constantly pushing herbal tea on me. Now she has science to prove her point? C’mon Duke! All we want is to watch your great basketball team. the super bowl www.thatsfi t.com/2008/01/31/avoid-a-super-bowl-heart-attack/ Oh, boy…they’re really doing it. They are actually calling out the Super Bowl. Now I can’t even watch football? What does that even leave? Wouldn’t you know it, the Germans are planning another shot at world domination. What’s their plan? Convincing us to stay at home and avoid traffi c, stop drinking coffee and turn off the stressful sporting events? Ha! You’re not stopping this patriot from doing the things he loves; I’m keeping an eye on you, Gerhard. Dr. Steinbeck stated that the “Super Bowl could pose a cardiac hazard.” He suggests getting a good night’s sleep, avoiding delicious, fatty meals, no raucous cheering, a two-drink maximum and, if there is a bad call, count to ten and relax, being sure “not to get mad at the refs.” So, let me get this straight: don’t do anything fun and your heart will be just fi ne? Perhaps we should discuss our feelings, perhaps crochet a little or maybe even give a buddy a back rub. Listen Helmut, keep your dirty, scientifi c, un-American lies on your own side of the ocean! I swear, if I read something bad about excess drinking…

So what’s good for your heart? They say laughter, but these medicine men would probably tell you that it should only be laughter at something lame, nothing that pokes fun at anyone else because of things beyond their control. They will also tell you garlic is good for your heart, but do you think you can eat that garlic if it is fl avoring a rack of juicy ribs or pizza? Don’t even think about it Captain No-More-Fun. If it is really important to you, The American Heart Association (http://www.americanheart.org/) is German-free and full of good information. WebMD (http://www.webmd.com/heart/) also has some good information on the subject, but I can’t attest to whether they are German-free or not, so proceed cau- tiously.

It can be a little diffi cult to eat heart healthy foods when you’re out in the world, but with a little education you can learn to ask the right questions and order the right things wherever you eat. First, fresh is best. Choose a restaurant with a commitment to using fresh ingredients whenever possible. Anything that had to be preserved often contains trans fat. Even if the nutrition table says zero, the food can still contain .4 grams of trans fat per serving, something that can really add up. Second, fatty meats and animal fats should be avoided. If you are eating red meat, make certain that you’re getting the leanest cut possible. Lean ground beef can actually be a healthy source of protein. Also, look for an eatery that uses olive oil or canola instead of butter in their recipes. Always ask about what fats they’re using. Eat fi sh whenever you can. Wine drinkers welcome the news that drinking wine (specifi cally red wine) seems to lower your bad cholesterol and increase HDL or “good” cholesterol. Lower cholesterol means better heart health and red wine also contains components that keep your blood from forming clots and building up on artery walls. “Studies comparing people who consume a glass a day of wine do have less heart attacks than those who do not. The risk seems to be 30-40%. However, the key is that it is only one half to one glass. eujacksonville.com | february 21-27, 2008 13 women and heart disease by erin thursby

Heart disease and heart attacks have been thought of as a male problem for so long that women are still often misdiagnosed, even though heart disease is currently the number one killer of women in America. Allison Teger, Spokesperson for WomenHeart, faced misdiagnosis before she had open-heart surgery last year. She’s just 41-years old, proving that heart disease can strike younger women. What makes the difference for a woman with heart problems, she says, “is a combination of early detection, accurate diagnosis and proper treatment.” As a child she was diagnosed with two congenital heart defects, both of which are fairly common. Many children are born with heart defects. Some never affect them during their lives, and many are never diagnosed. Teger stopped getting heart check-ups after she was a teenager. At around 40-years of age, she began experiencing medical problems. She was tired and her jaw hurt. She fainted while in her closet, experiencing nausea and a cold sweat. When she came to, she called for an ambulance. Teger was aware of what to look for because of her past medical history, so she thought that it might be her heart from the beginning. But because she’s slender, doesn’t smoke and was younger than most heart attack victims, doctors missed the signals. Instead, they told her she had a panic attack and anxiety. She was, of course, anxious because of her symptoms, “but what they didn’t seem to know was that I was a licensed mental health counselor. I knew what a panic attack was supposed to be like, and this wasn’t it.” So she kept pushing for more sophisticated tests, including an ultrasound of her heart. That test revealed her heart was enlarged, an enormous red fl ag. She also doctor-hopped in order to fi nd a doctor who didn’t dismiss her concerns. “When I fi nally found a good local doctor (Dr. Oken) at Mayo clinic in Jacksonville, he was able to diagnose that my mitral valve was severely regurgitating (leaking) and my atrial septal defect (ASD- a hole between the left upper chamber and the right upper chamber) was also leaking. He was kind Th e American Heart enough to consult with a regional center of excellence for congenital heart defects at Mayo clinic in Minnesota, and we agreed it was time for surgery.” She had more time to research and investigate than most women because of her early diagnosis. Association and EU present After she found the right doctor and had open-heart surgery, she began working for WomenHeart, hoping to help other women in her same position. Even if you’ve never had any kind of heart problems in the past, there are women who discover that they’ve lived with an undiagnosed heart defect all of their lives. Just because you’re twenty-fi ve doesn’t mean you’re immune. The thing that can help with early detection and treatment is awareness. the heart Know what the signs are and you’re halfway there. And, Teger says, “don’t be afraid to advocate for yourself.” what to look for One of the scariest things about a heart attack is that women don’t always experience all, or sometimes even any, of the symptoms of a heart attack. eujacksonville.com | february 21-27, 2008 17 american heart association’s offi cial tips exercise, diet, awareness exercise tips Whether you take part in a formal or informal exercise program, you need to make time for moderate aerobic physical activity, like walking, swimming or biking. You should always stay within your physician’s recommendations and your own comfort zone. Here’s a checklist of what to do and what to avoid. DO... • Wear comfortable clothes and fl at shoes with laces or sneakers. • Start slowly. Gradually build up to at least 30 minutes of activity, fi ve or more times per week (or whatever your doctor recommends). If you don't have a full 30 minutes, try two 15-minute sessions or three 10-minute sessions to meet your goal. • Exercise at the same time of day so it becomes a habit. For example, you might walk Monday through Friday from noon to 12:30 p.m. • Drink a cup of water before, during and after exercising (but check with the doctor, because some people need to limit their fl uid intake). • Ask family and friends to join you. You'll be more likely to keep exercising. • Note your activities on a calendar or in a log book. Write down the distance or length of time of your activity and how you feel after each session. If you miss a day, plan a make-up day or add 10–15 minutes to your next session. • Use variety to keep your interest up. Walk one day, swim the next time, then go for a bike ride on the weekend. • Join an exercise group, health club or YMCA. Many churches and senior centers offer exercise programs, too. (Get your doctor's permission fi rst.) • Look for chances to be more active during the day. Walk the mall before shopping, choose a fl ight of stairs over an escalator, or take 10–15 minute walking breaks while watching TV or sitting for some other activity. DON’T... • Get discouraged if you stop for awhile. Get started again gradually and work up to your old pace. • Do isometric exercises that require holding your breath, bearing down or sudden bursts of energy.
