GARLINGER, life-long and widely known resident of Hagerstown and Washington county, died suddenly at his home, 221 Summit avenue, at 4:30 o'clock yesterday morning, of a heart attack, aged 65 years. He had suffered a severe heart attack four years ago, and had been troubled with it since. Mr. Garlinger was taken ill about 1:20 o'clock in the morning and a physician was called, but he expired shortly afterward. Mr. Garlinger was a son or the late Benjamin A. and Johanna H. Garlinger, of this county. Prior to the World War he was a dealer in horses and farming implements for a number of years, having taken over the business started by his father. Since that time he had been living retired. He always manifested an intense interest in civic and public affairs, especially in matters pertaining to the welfare of Hagerstown. He was for many years connected with the Hagerstown Fair in which he took a deep interest and aided in its promotion and welfare. He was a Republican in politics and for many years was active in party circles. Mr. Garlinger was a charter member of Hagerstown Lodge of Elks and one of the oldest members of Potomac Lodge of Odd Follows. He was a member of Zion Reformed church. Mr. Garlinger is survived by his wife, Mrs. Mary W. Garlinger, and a nephew, Harry C. Pierce, of Washington, D.C. OBITUARY: James A. Hays, aged 67, died at Leitersburg on Wednesday morning at one o'clock after a very brief illness. Mr. Hays was in Hagerstown on Tuesday and seemed in his usual health until sometime during the afternoon when going up west Franklin Street, he suffered a slight stroke of paralysis, while walking along. He fell heavily upon the sidewalk and cut and bruised his face. When he reached the corner of Jonathon and Franklin Sts., he fell a second time, striking the back of his head. He was picked up and after resting a short while, was able to walk and showed no symptoms of anything very serious. He got on the Leitersburg stage at the Hoover House, soon after three o'clock, and arrived in Leitersburg about five thirty. On the way he complained of feeling very sick, and suffered considerably. Upon arriving at Leitersburg, he asked Mr. W. S. Gilbert to leave him off at the Hotel as he felt too sick to go to his home. Mr. Smith, the proprietor of the Hotel, was on the stage also, and he helped Mr. Hays to a sofa. After lying down for a short time, he received a second very severe stroke. The attendants became alarmed and summoned a physician. Little could be done to prolong life, and he sank rapidly and expired at 1 a.m. He is survived by his wife and these children: Mrs. Esta Showe, Fairplay, Md., J. W. Hays, Barton, Md., C. W. Hays, Roanoke, Va., F. T. Hays, , Ill., Miss Clara Hays, at home. Arrangement for the funeral will be made after the children arrive home. He held the office of magistrate at the time of his death. My great, great grandparents Adam and Anna Sophia McGuire(Maguire) Shank lived in Smithsburg from the time of their marriage at St Joseph's Catholic Church in Emmittsburg on April 20, 1847 until Adam died of wounds he received while serving in 6th Maryland at the battle of The Wilderness. Anna had two sisters Catherine and Jane Maguire and a brother Charles Maguire who served with the 2nd Maryland (Confederate). I have not been able to determine the parents of either Adam or Anna Sophia http://boards.ancestry.com/thread.aspx?mv=flat&m=3579&p=localities.northam.usa.states.maryla nd.counties.washington photo of family and “the empty chair.” CoH, 6th MD Vols. The Adam Shank family was photographed in 1871, seven years after Sgt. Adam Shank was seriously wounded in battle on May 5, 1864 at The Wilderness. Seated next to the "empty chair" in the center is his widow, Anna McGuire Shank. Anna was born in 1830, married Adam in 1846 and they lived in Smithsburg, Maryland. It appears that the daughter standing behind the "empty chair" is holding a rose. The daughter standing second from the right is Alverta Shank Pouder, Frank Greenwalt's great-grandmother, who married Thomas Talbot Pouder and moved to Roanoke, Virginia. Anna Shank's brother, Sgt. Charles McGuire served in Company A, Second Maryland Infantry (C.S.A.), part of the Stonewall Brigade and later, Ewell's Second Corps, Army of Northern Virginia. Adam Shank was elected Sergeant when the company was formed in the summer of 1862. However he was reduced in rank to private for being absence without leave from December, 1862 to February, 1863; his rank was later reinstated. Sgt. Shank was shot in the left side during the first day's fighting at the Wilderness and, unable to move, he remained on the battlefield all night. He was run over by a squadron of cavalry just before daylight and the horse's hooves did serious damage to his hips and legs. Sgt. Shank was hospitalized until several months after the close of the war and remained an invalid for the few years remaining before his death. http://www.6thmarylandinfantry.org/familystories/ShankEmptyChair.html

Rev. Theodore Gallaudet "Rev. Theodore and Julia Gallaudet Lived Colorful Lives" Carroll County Times article for 18 July 1999 By Jay A. Graybeal A family history researcher recently visited the Historical Society's library and asked for help in locating information about Rev. Theodore Gallaudet, a brother of Thomas Gallaudet and founder of the university that bears his name. Rev. Theodore Gallaudet served the New Windsor Presbyterian Church from 1853-1855 and the Westminster church from 1856-1857. In helping the researcher I found that Judge Francis Neal Parke of Westminster and Western Maryland College professor Dr. Hugh Latimer Elderdice had researched Rev. Gallaudet in the late 1930s. Former Westminster resident Mary B. Shellman provided the researchers with some information about the minister in 1937: "Theodore, the son of Octavius Gallaudet, a French Huguenot, and brother of Thomas Gallaudet, the founder of the Deaf and Dumb Institute in New York, came to Westminster from Washington before the Civil War. He had been private secretary to Andrew Jackson. Mrs. Gallaudet's most intimate friend was Dolly Madison. Both Mr. and Mrs. Gallaudet were cultured and educated people although rather peculiar. Mrs. Gallaudet was a daughter of Dr. Nathan Smith of Baltimore. Mr. Gallaudet was a graduate of Princeton University. When he came to Westminster he accepted the principalship of the brick school at the entrance to the cemetery and later taught school in the basement of the Methodist Protestant Church. He gave up teaching and became an agent for the Bible Association and while selling Bibles and Hymn books, he distributed tracts in the rural sections of Carroll County, and to the older residents of the County; he is remembered as a circuit rider, who was entertained in the homes of the farmers. The Gallaudets lived in quite a few houses in Westminster and many quaint stories are told regarding their peculiarities, among which is the following: A disagreement grew out of a conversation between the couple and Mr. Gallaudet left home for a business trip before the disagreement was cleared up. The wife, no doubt, thought of this during the day and finally decided to frighten the husband. So she went up stairs, donned her night clothes, and climbed into bed. When she heard her husband enter the house she feigned that she was dead. Mr. Gallaudet entered the room and calmly looked at his wife, and quoted: 'The Lord giveth and the Lord taketh away, Blessed be the name of the Lord.' Mrs. Gallaudet grew quite indignant, jumped out of bed and no doubt resumed the dispute. Mrs. Gallaudet died in Westminster and was buried in Greenmount Cemetery Baltimore, Maryland. After the death of his wife Mr. Gallaudet rented a room from Mr. Knight on Pennsylvania Avenue, Westminster, Maryland where he made his home until his death. He is buried at New Freedom, Pennsylvania." Mrs. Gallaudet eventually predeceased her husband and her death was reported in the July 19, 1879 issue of the Westminster American Sentinel newspaper: "Mrs. Julia, wife of Rev. T. Gallaudet, of this city, died suddenly at her residence in the West end of town on Monday night. The deceased had been ill a short time ago but had apparently recovered and was in her usual health. Her daughter had just arrived on the evening train from Washington and they were sitting in conversation, when she suddenly fell off the chair and died almost instantly without a struggle. A messenger was despatched for her husband who was absent, but unfortunately he could not be found. Mr. Gallaudet is engaged in selling books through the country and his whereabouts could not be learned, although every effort had been made. Her remains were taken to Washington, D.C., for interment on Wednesday morning, accompanied by her daughter and friends. The deceased was in the 78th year of her age. She was once a very intimate friend of Mrs. Madison, wife of the sage of Montpelier, and had many letters from her. Mrs. Madison always addressed her as "Dear Julia". Mrs. Gallaudet leaves a husband, two daughters, and one son in the ministry." Rev. Gallaudet's death was reported in the October 4, 1884 issue of the Westminster American Sentinel newspaper: "Rev. Theodore Gallaudet, a well known local preacher and colporteur, died at New Freedom, Pa., on Tuesday, aged 79 years. The deceased was well known in this city and County where he had resided a number of years. He was a true Christian and a ripe scholar. Of late years he made his home in New Freedom, his wife having died some years ago." The death of Rev. Gallaudet closed a chapter on a colorful couple who had known presidents and first ladies and who also had become local historical figures themselves. http://hscc.carr.org/research/yesteryears/cct1999/990718.htm Theodore son of Peter Wallace Gallaudet and Jane Hopkins born Hartford Mar. 28, 1805 married Julia Smith daughter of Samuel Harrison Smith of Washington, D.C. Thomas Sullivan ------Jacob Frey. Reminiscences of Baltimore. Baltimore: Maryland Book Concern, 1893. p61 A decade before the commencement of the war the great statesman, Henry Clay, died. Ther was an extra session of our City Council held on the 30th of June, to arrange for appropriate obsequies here. The town meeting was held in accordance with a public call made by the mayor and at the Exchange, which was draped in black for the occasion, a very large gathering, over which Mayor Jerome presided, concurred in resolutions of respect and grief. An address by Z. Collins Lee, Esq. contained these words, which seem to express the sentiments of every one present, of whatever party creed — "Let, then, the nation which mourns his loss, let men of all parties, now pause and contemplale his noble example and learn from it the true love of country and mankind. Around this great statesman's tomb be the voice of faction and disunion hushed and the spirit of partisan rivalry extinguished forever." Among the resolutions was one inviting all citizens who could conveniently do so to attend the funeral at Washington in a body, and providing for the appointment by the chair of a committee of twenty-four representative citizens to visit Washington and testify the respect of the city for the illustrious dead. Every preparation was made in Baltimore to do honor to the statesman—"The Sage of Ashland," as he was called. When the hour arrived for the car which should bear the funeral cortege to leave the capital, three guns were fired in quick succession from Federal Hill. The procession which was to escort the remains from the depot was formed in Poppleton and Pratt Streets, with the right resting on Baltimore Street. Besides the military there were various societies, intdudmg the Odd Fellows, Old Defenders, Sons of Temperance, Firemen, etc. These formed to the eastward of the military. ------William Henry Boyd.
