GENERAL INFORMATION.

LOCATION. This Institution is located in the healthful and flourishing City of Westminster, Carroll county, Maryland, on the line of the Western Maryland Railroad, about midway between the cities of Baltimore and Hagerstown. The commanding eminence at the" West end,"-eight hundred and thirty-eight feet above tide-water-on which the College buildings stand, overlooking the whole city and many miles of the surrounding country, affords one of the most beautiful and picturesque views in the State. The main edifice is a spacious one, five stories high, containing Chapel, Recitation Rooms, Halls for the Societies, Professors' Apartments, and Dormitories. Addi- tional dormitory accommodation for male students, rendered ne- cessary by the steadily increasing patronage of the College, is provided by Ward Hall, a new and commodious building erected during the year 1882; and it is hoped that the accommodations will-be further increased by the enlargement of this building, at an early date, to double its present size. The grounds belonging to the College comprise eight acres, allowing sufficient range for the exercise of students during the time not allotted to study.

THE PECULIAR ADVANTAGE this College offers is, that parents can have their sons and daughters educated in the same institution, and under the same instruction. The Course of Study, however, is not the same for both sexes-the young ladies completing theirs in three years, and the gentlemen theirs in four. Although both sexes have the same instructors, yet the two departments are kept entirely separate, the Students meeting only at Chapel services and in the dining-room with members of the Faculty, and at no other time unless under similar supervision. The Vice-President, Preceptress, and other members of the Faculty, reside in the building, eat at the same table with the Stu- dents, and have constant oversight of them. WESTERN MARYLAND COLLEGE. 21

PATRONAGE AND DIRECTION. The College property is owned by a Board of Trustees, incor- porated in March, r868, by the General Assembly of Maryland, and the Institution is under the special patronage of the Maryland Annual Conference of the Methodist Protestant Church; but noth- ing will be introduced either into the course of study or the dis- cipline and management of the Institution which can be, in any way, objectionable to Students of other religious persuasions.

CONDITIONS OF ADMISSION.

1. Candidates for admission into any Class must come well re- commended, as to moral character, (if from any other Institution of learning, with suitable testimonials) and be examined in the studies already pursued by that Class. Such examinations may be had on Tuesday or Wednesday of Commencement Week, and applicants are advised to avail themselves of this opportunity in order to further qualify themselves by September in any studies in which they may be found deficient. . 2. Each Student, upon entering, is required to sign a pledge to obey all the Rules of the Institution, a printed copy of which is at the same time furnished him. 3· Prompt payment of all College bills must be made. 4· The Students must agree to take all the studies of the Class entered, unless excused from any portion thereof at the time of entering. 5· No Student shall, at his own option. drop a study during a session. Communications from Parents or Guardians in reference to this or to any other regulation of the College. should be ad- dressed to the President, who will promptly lay them before the the Faculty for consideration and action. 6. If a Student be a minor, his spending money should be de- posited with the President, to be returned in such sums as he may think best.

STATE SCHOLARSHIPS. An appropriation made by the General Assembly of Maryland in r878, enables the College to furnish board, fuel, lights and wash- ing free to one Student (male or female) from each Senatorial Dis- trict of the State, to be appointed by the School Commissioners by and with the advice and consent of the Senators of their re- spective Districts, after a competitive examination 0./ t/~e candi- dates. A Scholarship cannot be held by the same Student for more than four years, and the holder is required to give his (or her) bond to the State of Maryland for such amount, with such security as may be approved of by the President of the C')llege, that he (or she) will teach school within the State for not less than 22 WESTERN MARYLAND OOLLEGE.

two years after. leaving College. In order to enable the Faculty to carry out fully the intention of the Act of the Legislature pro- viding for these Scholarships, it is highly important that the School Commissioners of the several Senatorial Districts should be care- ful to appoint Students prepared to enter, at least, the Freshman Class. If, however, any "Ofthe candidates selected are deficient in preparation, they will be received into the Preparatory Department of the College. EXAMINATIONS. There are two examinations of all the classes every year. The one begins on the last Monday in January, and the other on the second Monday in June. The latter is the concluding examination of the academic year; the former is called the intermediate exam- ination: both are open to the public. Students, moreover, who, from any cause, are absent more than three times in four consecu- tive weeks from recitations in anyone study, are required to pass a special examination on the subjects treated of in the class-room during their absence. COMMENCEMENT AND VACATIONS. The Annual Commencement is held on the third Thursday in June. The Baccalaureate Sermon of the President to the graduating class is delivered on the morning of the Sunday preceding Com- mencement. On the evening of the same day, a sermon is delivered before the Literary Societies by a preacher elected for the occasion. On the subsequent days preceding Commencement, are held the Anniversary of the Browning Literary Society, the Class-day Ex- ercises of the graduating class, the Oratorical Contest between the Irving and the Webster Literary Societies, the meeting of the Alumni Association, and the Annual Oration before the Literary Societies. On the evening of Commencement-day, an oration is delivered and an essay is read before the Alumni Association by two of their members. Vacation extends from Commencement until the first Tuesday in September, on which day the regular Course of Study begins, and there is no intermission of recitations except on Good Friday and Easter Monday, and during Christmas week.

DEGREES OF A. B., AND A. M. At the Annual Commencement the degree of Bachelor of Arts is conferred upon all members of the graduating class. Any graduate who shall have been admitted a member of one WESTERN MARYLAND COLLEGE. 23

of the learned professions, shall be entitled to the degree of Master of Arts, three years after graduation. Other graduates will be recommended by the Faculty to the Board of Trustees for the degree of Master of Arts three years after graduation, provided they shall have submitted, on or before June rst of the year in which they shall seek the degree, a literary, philosophical or scientific thesis, which must be approved by the Faculty. LECTURES. In addition to the regular recitations of the several Classes, the following Courses of Lectures are delivered during the College year: By President Ward, on Mental and Moral Philosophy. " Prof Zimmerman, on Natural Science. " Prof Reese, on Philology and Classical Literature and An- tiquities. " Prof. Devilbiss, on Belles-Lettres. " Prof Hering, on Mathematics. " J.W. Hering, M. D., on Anatomy, Physiology and Hygiene. " R. B. Norment, Esq., on Civil Law and Political Economy.

SOCIETIES. The Irving and the Webster Literary Societies of Young Gentle- men, and the Browning and the Philornathean Societies of Young Ladies, hold regular weekly meetings, and it is the desire of the Faculty that all the Students avail themselves 'of the advantages of these valuable and instructive organizations.

LITERARY AND SCIENTIFIC AIDS. The department of science is provided with Philosophical and Chemical apparatus, Geological and Mineralogical collections, and other requisites for the study of such branches as are usually com- prised in a College course. Besides the libraries belonging to the Literary Societies, and intended more especially for the use of their respective members, the students have access to others containing over 4000 volumes.

A PARTIAL COURSE may be arranged for such Students as do not wish to pursue all the studies required of candidates for graduation. mir It is very desirable that Students should enter at the begin- ning and remain until the close of the session. Students will not remain at the College during any portion of the time allotted to vacation, unless by special arrangement with the President. 24 WESTERN MARYLAND COLLEGE.

GRADES AND AWARDS. The scholastic standing of the Students is determined by a system of grading, the scale of which is from 1 to 10. At the Annual Commencement, Certificates of Distinction are awarded to the three highest of such Students as have attained an average grade of nine in all the studies of any department. Others who have attained an average grade of nine receive honorable mention. And as every violation of College Law, and every un- excused absence from a stated exercise is demerited, to such Students as have received no demerit marks during the year is awarded a Certificate of Distinction in Deportment.

ORATORICAL CONTEST. On Tuesday evening of Commencement Week, there is an Oratorical Contest between the Irving and the Webster Literary Societies. The following have been selected by their respective Societies to represent them at the present Commencement for 1883. IRVING. WEBSTER. JNO. H. CUNNINGHAM, FRANKLIN T. BENSON, JAMES D. DOMESTIC ARRANGEMENTS. &c.

The Vice-President has the manag-ement of the Boarding De- partment, under the direction of the Board of Trustees, and spares no pains to render entire satisfaction to the patrons of the Institution. NON-RESIDENT STUDENTS are required to board in the Institu- tion, unless a different arrangement is made with the President. BOARDING STUDENTS al~e required to bring their own sheets, pillows, pillow-cases, blankets and counterpanes; the name of the owner plainly marked on each article. LADY BOARDERS should supply themselves, in addition, with over-shoes and umbrella. EACH ROOMis furnished with bed, bedstead, chairs, stove, mirror, washstand, bowl and pitcher, and a study-table, the use of which will be granted, free of cost to the Students, but they must pay any expense that may be incurred in keeping these articles o.f furni- ture in repair, and, if broken, they must be replaced by the Students having the articles in charge. Special damages will be assessed on those Students who injure or destroy any College property. TUITION FEES are charged from the BEGINNINGof the session, but the charge for board dates from the entrance of the Student. 26 WESTERN MARYLAND COLLEGE.
