Further, there is a growing and related literature on what is referred to by economists as ‘information cascades’ on such networks. However, there is little discussion of the specific events which lead to either the creation of a network in the first instance, or of how a network which is latent in terms of its awareness evolves into a network on which individual behaviour/beliefs are actually altered. In this paper, we describe the process of emergence and evolution of a historical cultural and social network across which the opinions and behaviour of individuals were influenced. We also illustrate how empirical networks can be reconstructed relying principally on information contained in qualitative, historical sources. The specific example we use is religious belief in England in the 1550s. -

Drawing upon extensive manuscript research, it focuses on the reign of Mary I (1553-1558), when the official return to Roman Catholicism was accompanied by the prosecution of Protestants for heresy, and the reign of Elizabeth I (1558-1603), when the state religion again shifted to Protestantism. I argue that the cognitive dissonance created by these seesaw changes of official doctrine necessitated a society in which religious mutability became standard operating procedure. For most early modern men and women it was impossible to navigate between the competing and contradictory dictates of Tudor religion and politics without conforming, dissimulating, or changing important points of conscience and belief. Although early modern theologians and polemicists widely declared religious conformists to be shameless apostates, when we examine specific cases in context it becomes apparent that most individuals found ways to positively rationalize and justify their respective actions. This fraught history continued to have long-term effects on England’s religious, political, and intellectual culture. -

The Reformation of the Generations: Age, Ancestry and Memory in England 1500-1700 Folger Shakespeare Library Spring Semester Seminar 2016 Alexandra Walsham (University of Cambridge): [email protected] The origins, impact and repercussions of the English Reformation have been the subject of lively debate. Although it is now widely recognised as a protracted process that extended over many decades and generations, surprisingly little attention has been paid to the links between the life cycle and religious change. Did age and ancestry matter during the English Reformation? To what extent did bonds of blood and kinship catalyse and complicate its path? And how did remembrance of these events evolve with the passage of the time and the succession of the generations? This seminar will investigate the connections between the histories of the family, the perception of the past, and England’s plural and fractious Reformations. It invites participants from a range of disciplinary backgrounds to explore how the religious revolutions and movements of the period shaped, and were shaped by, the horizontal relationships that early modern people formed with their sibilings, relatives and peers, as well as the vertical ones that tied them to their dead ancestors and future heirs. It will also consider the role of the Reformation in reconfiguring conceptions of memory, history and time itself. Schedule: The seminar will convene on Fridays 1-4.30pm, for 10 weeks from 5 February to 29 April 2016, excluding 18 March, 1 April and 15 April. In keeping with Folger tradition, there will be a tea break from 3.00 to 3.30pm. -

It explores different conceptual frameworks and methodological approaches to the period and examines an assortment of classic and recent works on a variety of topics: religion and the state; science, technology, and medicine; economy and society; gender and sexuality; and ideas and mentalities. The course prepares students for the end-of-semester comprehensive examination and for further study of early modern Europe. THE ELIZABETHAN PROTESTANT PRESS: A STUDY OF THE PRINTING AND PUBLISHING OF PROTESTANT RELIGIOUS LITERATURE IN ENGLISH, EXCLUDING BIBLES AND LITURGIES, 1558-1603. By WILLIAN CALDERWOOD, M.A., B.D. Submitted for the Ph.D. degree, University College. (c\ (LONBI 2 ABSTRACT Uninterrupted for forty-five years, from 1558 to 1603, Protestants in England were able to use the printing press to disseminate Protestant ideology. It was a period long enough for Protestantism to root itself deeply in the life of the nation and to accumulate its own distinctive literature. English Protestantism, like an inf ant vulnerable to the whim of a parent under King Henry VIII, like a headstrong and erratic child in Edward's reign, and like a sulking, chastised youth in the Marian years, had come of age by the end of the Elizabethan period. At the outset of Elizabeth's reign the most pressing religious need was a clear, well-reasoned defence of the Church of England. The publication of Bishop Jewel's Apologia Ecclesiae Anglicanae in 1562 was a response to that need and set the tone of literary polemics for the rest of the period. It was a time of muscle- flexing for the Elizabethan Church, and especially in the opening decades, a time when anti-Catholicism was particularly vehement. Consistently throughout the period, when Queen and country were threatened by Catholic intrigues and conspiracies, literature of exceptional virulence was published against Catholicism. But just as the press became an effective tool for defenders and apologists of the Church of England, it soon was being used as an instrument to advance the cause of further reform by more radical Protestants. -

196 book reviews Karl Gunther Reformation Unbound. Protestant Visions of Reform in England, 1525–1590. Cambridge University Press, Cambridge 2014, x + 284 pp. isbn 9781107074484. £65; us$99. In a rich and important study, Karl Gunther reassesses the character of the English church under the Tudors. Combing through both well-known and lesser-studied religious and polemical tracts, Gunther uncovers a “spectrum of voices” (p. 15) who called for radical change in the church. While radical ecclesiological visions have been typically ascribed to radical Puritans and separatists during Elizabeth’s reign, Gunther persuasively argues that these visions had existed in the minds of English reformers since Henry’s day. Gunther’s first and best chapter explores a wealth of radical ecclesiologi- cal expressions in the Henrician church, illuminating the extent of evangelical challenges to traditional institutions. Combing through the works of familiar figures such as William Tyndale, Robert Barnes, and François Lambert he tries to discover their opinions on a range of issues, including the eradication of bishops, the creation of new parishes, congregational discipline, and even the freedom for parishioners to form separatist congregations in case of theologi- cally or morally errant pastors. Perhaps even more important than their radical nature is the way these ecclesiological visions completely contradicted quasi- official publications of the 1530s and 1540s which claimed that the Bible had not set down rules of church governance and that therefore it was for the monarch to determine them. While chapter one antedates what scholars have considered for a long time to be later developments, chapter two ventures somewhere new. -

Explaining Religious Change in Medieval and Early Modern Europe
a Migrations of the Holy: Explaining Religious Change in Medieval and Early Modern Europe Alexandra Walsham University of Cambridge Cambridge, United Kingdom How do we conceptualize and explain religious change in medieval and early modern Europe without perpetuating distorting paradigms inherited from the very era of the past that is the subject of our study? How can we do justice to historical development over time without resorting to linear grand narratives that have their intellectual origins in the very movements that we seek to comprehend? In one way or another, this challenging question has inspired all my published work to date, which has focused on the ways in which early mod- ern society adapted to the religious revolutions that unfolded before it. My work has explored the ambiguities, anomalies, and ironies that accompany dramatic moments of ideological and cultural rupture. It has sought to bal- ance recognition of the decisive transformations wrought by the Protestant and Catholic Reformations with awareness of the complexities and contra- dictions that characterized their evolution and entrenchment in practice. It has been marked by a consuming interest in the currents of continuity that tempered, mediated, and even facilitated the upheavals of the early mod- ern era. One consequence of this preoccupation with analyzing how and why cultures are held in tension and suspension during critical phases of transition is that I have been very much less effective in acknowledging and accounting for religious change itself. This is my Achilles’ heel as a historian, and one that I share with a number of other historians of my generation. -

TWO SIXTEENTH-CENTURY NORTHERN PROTESTANTS : JOHN BRADFORD AND WILLIAM TURNER by CELIA HUGHES, B.A., B.D., Ph.D. LECTURER IN ECCLESIASTICAL HISTORY IN THE UNIVERSITY OF MANCHESTER John Bradford (c. 15 10-55) was a Manchester man and William Turner (c. 1510-68) was born at Morpeth in Northumberland. Both were educated at Pembroke Hall, Cambridge, though at different periods, and spent the greater part of their lives as laymen. Eventually both were ordained by Ridley when he was Bishop of London in the reign of Edward VI. They shared a common zeal for the Protestant cause, which they expressed by preaching, writing and translating. Both were involved in controversy with a group of Freewillers, who were regarded as heretics by Catholic and Protestant alike. Their careers differ in that Turner's interest in theology began in the 1530s and continued alongside his scientific studies until he died, still protesting the need for reform, in the reign of Elizabeth. Bradford moved between extremes, beginning as a young man seeking his fortune in high places, and ending, as befitted a disciple of Ridley, at the stake. JOHN BRADFORD "In Manchester was I born", said John Bradford, and there is a strong local tradition that this event took place in Blackley. His mother was living there at the time of his imprisonment, and he had connections with two local families, the Oldhams and the Beswicks, who had residences there. However, a suggestion that he was born literally within the township of Manchester is to be found in Croston's account of Old Manchester and its Worthies,' based on the evidence of a deed of conveyance referring to a house in Old Millgate standing "between the tenement of John Bradford and Richard Platt".
