EVOLVING OUR HEROES: AN ANALYSIS OF FOUNDERS AND "FOUNDING FATHERS" IN AMERICAN HISTORY DISSERTATIONS John M. Stawicki A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS December 2019 Committee: Andrew Schocket, Advisor Ruth Herndon Scott Martin © 2019 John Stawicki All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Andrew Schocket, Advisor This thesis studies scholarly memory of the American founders and “Founding Fathers” via inclusion in American dissertations. Using eighty-one semi-randomly and diversely selected founders as case subjects to examine and trace how individual, group, and collective founder interest evolved over time, this thesis uniquely analyzes 20th and 21st Century Revolutionary American scholarship on the founders by dividing it five distinct periods, with the most recent period coinciding with “founders chic.” Using data analysis and topic modeling, this thesis engages three primary historiographic questions: What founders are most prevalent in Revolutionary scholarship? Are social, cultural, and “from below” histories increasing? And if said histories are increasing, are the “New Founders,” individuals only recently considered vital to the era, posited by these histories outnumbering the Top Seven Founders (George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, James Madison, Alexander Hamilton, Benjamin Franklin, and Thomas Paine) in founder scholarship? The thesis concludes that the Top Seven Founders have always dominated founder dissertation scholarship, that social, cultural, and “from below” histories are increasing, and that social categorical and “New Founder” histories are steadily increasing as Top Seven Founder studies are slowly decreasing, trends that may shift the Revolutionary America field away from the Top Seven Founders in future years, but is not yet significantly doing so. -

William Marsh, 'A Rather Shadowy Figure
William Marsh, ‘a rather shadowy figure,’ crossed boundaries both national and political Vermont holds a unique but little-known place in eighteenth-century American and Canadian history. During the 1770s William Marsh and many others who had migrated from Connecticut and Massachusetts to take up lands granted by New Hampshire Governor Benning Wentworth, faced severe chal- lenges to their land titles because New York also claimed the area between the Connecticut and Hudson rivers, known as “the New Hampshire Grants.” New York’s aggressive pursuit of its claims generated strong political tensions and an- imosity. When the American Revolution began, the settlers on the Grants joined the patriot cause, expecting that a new national regime would counter New York and recognize their titles. During the war the American Continental Congress declined to deal with the New Hampshire settlers’ claims. When the Grants settlers then proposed to become a state separate from New York, the Congress denied them separate status. As a consequence, the New Hampshire grantees declared independence in 1777 and in 1778 constituted themselves as an independent republic named Vermont, which existed until 1791 when it became the 14th state in the Ameri- can Union. Most of the creators of Vermont played out their roles, and their lives ended in obscurity. Americans remember Ethan Allen and his Green Mountain Boys and their military actions early in the Revolution. But Allen was a British captive during the critical years of Vermont’s formation, 1775-1778. A few oth- ers, some of them later Loyalists, laid the foundations for Vermont’s recognition and stability. -

Because he and his Green Mountain Boys captured Fort Ticonderoga in the early days of the Revolution, his fame has gone far beyond Vermont. But we really don't know that much about the man himself. There are no known pictures of him that were drawn from life. We have books he wrote on religion and government, but few letters. What we know is mostly what others wrote and told about him. We do know that Ethan Allen was very tall, had a fierce temper and a loud voice. He drank a lot. He loved a good fight. Whatever he did or said pleased some people, but made many others angry. But one thing is true, whatever he wrote or did, people noticed. He was often in trouble. Duffy Ira Allen 1751-1814 Bennington Museum collection In memorials produced long after his death in 1789, Ethan Allen has been remembered in statues in Vermont and in the Congressional Hall of Statuary in Washington, DC; in military posts named for him in Virginia during the Civil War and in Colchester, Vermont, an 1890s post, its original structures now residential and commercial sites. Though Allen sailed the seas only as a British prisoner in 1776, two Union coastal defense boats dis- played his name in the 1860s. A century later, the nuclear submarine Ethan Allen fired the first nuclear-tipped missile from below the ocean’s surface in the early 1960s. Ethan is probably best remembered from mostly fictional tales and stories about his heroic and other deeds, especially the pre-dawn capture of the British forts at Ticonderoga and Crown Point in May 1775 during the earliest months of the American War for Independence from Great Britain. Some say he was the most important founder of Vermont. On that latter point, however, remembrances of Ethan Allen seem to forget that he was far from Vermont when the state’s independence was de- Walloomsack Review 14 clared in 1777. He had been a prisoner of the British since September 1775 when he was captured after foolishly attacking Montreal with only one-hun- dred poorly armed Americans and Canadians against a force of five-hundred defenders – British regulars, Loyalist militia, and Mohawk warriors. -

Editor. · Mr. President, Your Excellency, Members of the General Assem bly, Distinguished Guests, Ladies and Gentlemen: AM not unmindful of the honor which you have conferred upon I me by the invitation to address you this evening upon the subject of Ethan Allen, the soldier. Within the short time allotted, those of you who have made a study of his military career can readily appre ciate that it will be impossible to deal extensively or in detail with his various military activities. There are, however, some incidents in his life concerning which I wish to refresh your recollection, that to my mind indicate his military ability, and establish without question or doubt his right to a high place among the military leaders of this Republic. First, we must have in mind the fact that Ethan Allen was not a professional soldier trained in the calling of arms; that his military knowledge, strategy and tactics were obtained in the hard school of CsJ experience and under conditions that at all times were most hazard ous and trying. -

[email protected] Ethan Allen is rightfully called the “Founder of Vermont”. There is a minority who believe he tried to betray the American Cause in his later years. This presentation will show that is not the case and although he had his faults, he was a true American Patriot. He was born January 31, 1738 in Litchfield Connecticut the oldest of seven siblings. His father was a moderately successful farmer and land speculator. His family came to first settle in Massachusetts in 1632. In 1740 his family moved from Litchfield to Cornwall, CT a major mining area. In 1756 Ethan and his eighteen year old cousin served as Connecticut militiamen fighting for the British in the French and Indian War. His unit’s assignment was to seize Fort Ticonderoga and Crown Point. His service in the French and Indian War was without incident. He did not get to see combat but his service ignited an ardor to serve in the military. He got to travel to the New Hampshire Grants the territory east of Lake Champlain from New York to the western border of New Hampshire on the Connecticut River. From his early youth he showed signs of brilliance. He was a voracious reader. He started pre-Yale studies with a tutor and showed excellence in algebra, geometry, and accounting, the “Classics” and Greek and Latin. Tragically, his father suddenly died at age 40 leaving Ethan to keep the house and raise his seven siblings which ended any prospects of going to Yale. -

Ethan Allen Institute Newsletter – September 2019 (Printer Edition) Top Story: Are You Ready for the “Climate Strike and Week of Action”? The week of September 20-27 has been designated by a handful of activist and lobbyist groups as a “Global Climate Strike and Week of Actions.” The objective is to encourage people to skip work and, for students, skip school, go out and block traffic, picket offices and businesses, and generally disrupt people’s ability to function in their daily lives. It is a massive temper tantrum orchestrated to intimidate legislators and citizens into supporting a radical climate change agenda. While we fully respect every citizen’s right to speak out, peaceably assemble, and petition government of redress of grievances, this thing (for lack of an adequately descriptive term) raises some questions. First and foremost, many public schools are actively encouraging and enabling students to participate, even though similar but smaller demonstrations at the Strolling of the Heifers parade and the blocking of traffic in Montpelier earlier this year involved illegal activity by school aged children and young adults. The organizations pushing the Climate Strike have a clear political agenda and, in the case of VPIRG, for example, lobby on behalf of special interests with a substantial financial stake in the legislation this mob will ostensibly be demanding. So, is this a legitimate educational mission, or is it the systematic political indoctrination and exploitation of young people at the expense of their genuine education? We think the latter. We also think it adds insult to injury when Vermonters pay some of the highest property taxes in the country, and by some estimates as much as $23,000 per student to attend our public schools, and the schools are using that money to send our kids out on the streets for the express purpose of creating mayhem in our daily lives. -
The Capture of Fort Ticonderoga, Ethan Allen and Benedict Arnold Are Engaged in a Heated Contest to See Who Would Ultimately Take Com- Mand of the Captured Fort
Background Information for Teachers Much of what we know about the historic capture of Fort Ticonderoga by Ethan Allen, Benedict Arnold, and the Green Mountain Boys on May 10, 1775, comes from the letters, journals, and diaries of the par- ticipants. This activity for students includes descriptions of the capture from the point of view of three men: Ethan Allen, Benedict Arnold, and Joceyln Feltham. Even though all three were present during the capture, their accounts don’t always agree. History is not a list of facts; it is the interpretation of facts. These three men each have a bias and rea- sons for including or excluding certain facts. In the hours and days after the capture of Fort Ticonderoga, Ethan Allen and Benedict Arnold are engaged in a heated contest to see who would ultimately take com- mand of the captured Fort. In the dozens of letter Ethan Allen writes in the days after May 10th, Benedict Arnold is only mentioned in one—the letter written to the New York Committee of Safety. Why? There was a warrant for Allen’s arrest in New York, and it was to Allen’s advantage, in that one letter, that his actions in capturing the fort not be seen as by his action alone. On the other hand, Jocelyn Feltham, second in command of the British troops at Ticonderoga, is writing a report to General Thomas Gage, the Commander-in-Chief of all British forces in North America. Feltham doesn’t care whether Allen or Arnold is in charge. His chief motivation is to defend his actions and those of his commander, Captain William Delaplace. -
