Slated to open as early as December 2019, this center will have something for everyone, and it’s one of the many ways that our community will continue to enjoy a high quality of life. From our award-winning parks, fountains, and play spaces, to our special events like Celebrate Hillsboro or the Showtime at Shute concert series, Hillsboro families have plenty to do together this summer. We’re blessed with natural environments like Jackson Bottom Wetlands Preserve and Noble Woods Park, and next year we will celebrate the opening of the Orenco Woods Nature Park. The future looks even brighter with a Trails Master Plan to eventually add 71 miles of new trail facilities for our community for a total of 98 miles of trails, and more parks in South Hillsboro. The Hillsboro Hops continue to make us proud 38 home games each year – plus the playoffs – at Ron Tonkin Field. Nearby, the new Top Golf facility is set to take the golfing experience to a new level this year. With all that we have in Hillsboro, I hope you and your family enjoy a great summer. The first 12 Hillsboro residents to graduate from the six-week program presented their findings and recommendations about balanced housing to the Hillsboro City Council. The Council prioritized the creation of the Citizens’ Academy as another way to engage a diverse group of residents and encourage them to continue to serve in a leadership capacity within the City. CITY NEWS BRIEFS • The City of Hillsboro and Mayor Jerry Willey have won Honorable Mention in the US Conference of Mayors’ 2016 Climate Protection Awards for the ongoing work of Hillsboro’s Community Sustainability Task Force. • The U.S. Census estimates Hillsboro’s population at 102,347. The City’s official population is 97,480 residents, based on the annual population Shute Seeds estimate from Portland State University’s (PSU) Population Research Center.
