This is a perfect time to get acquainted with your fellow traveler, together you will share in the most incredible Flower Carpets and Decorations. Day 2-Thursday, May 04, 2017 – Traditional Dinner We arrive in Funchal, Madeira, known as the Pearl of the Atlantic. After a short drive we check in to the 5 Star Pestana Casino Park Hotel in Funchal. Our home for the next 8 nights. Madeira is a haven of natural beauty. The exotic colors of the flowers stand out from among the blue sea and the emerald green vegetation. Your first day in Funchal, take advantage of this time to take in all that Madeira has to offer. During your afternoon at leisure visit the Funchal Market. Containing an abundance of smell and colors, this market is divided into three parts. The flower section, the fruit and vegetable section and the fish section. Here you will find all kinds of tropical fruit and even some unusual ones that grow on the island. Later this evening, Join us for a fun night out at a typical Madeira Restaurant enjoying Madeiran food and hospitality. Taste the local dish “Espetada” (beef marinated in herbs, cooked on a large skewer over an open fire) while being entertained by folk dancers. (Dinner) Day 3-Friday, May 05, 2017- Funchal City Tour & Monte. Our first tour in Funchal & Monte. We start our tour at the local market, at the entrance you will be welcomed by the flower sellers wearing the bright traditional customs. Fruits and vegetables stands are placed around a central patio and, at the bottom of the stairs, you will find the fish marked, where, among other species caught in this part of the Atlantic, you will see the amazing “espada” fish. At the embroidery factory you will be able to see the beautiful designs created and transferred to the cloth and then the finishing process. The road will then take us to Monte where we have the opportunity of enjoying the shade of its big sycamores, or walk through the gardens that have flowers all year round, and finally, climb the long stairs to the Church of Our Lady of the Monte. The best way to get back down to Funchal is by taking one of the carros de cestos (toboggans), which make their way down the sharply winding the curves. Providence, RI 02914 401-434-1454 [email protected] www.SagresVacations.com Day 4-Saturday, May 06, 2016- Camara de Lobos, Cabo Girão, Porto Moniz West Tour Enjoy a picturesque tour of the western side of the Island, along the coastal road toward the small fishing village of Camara de Lobos. We visit Cabo Girão, the highest promontory in Europe, at nearly 2,000 feet over the Atlantic Ocean. Prior to Lunch we will enjoy a view of Ecumeada, where on a clear day we can see the scenic over both the North and South Coasts of the Islaneds. A traditional Lunch awaits us in Porto Moniz before returning back to Funchal via Ribeira Brava. (Breakfast, Lunch) Day 5-Sunday, May 07, 2017 Leisure Day Enjoy this day of leisure and visit “The Madeira Story Centre”, Funchal’s latest visitors’ attraction, where you can learn everything about Madeira’s history and development up to the present day, is located in the Old Town, in the Largo Almirante Reis, opposite the Monte Cable Car Station. This spectacular, interactive museum allows the visitor to go back in time on a virtual journey and ‘relive’ in chronological sequence the archipelago’s great historic events, from its volcanic birth 14 million years ago to the first hydroplane landing in Madeira, from the times of the Infant D. Henrique to Napoleon and Churchill. The permanent exhibitions feature the themes: Volcanic Origin, Discovery Legends, Discovering Madeira, Turmoil and Trade, Strategic Island, Flourishing Madeira, Post-navigation Era and Exploring Madeira. Taking you on an extremely fascinating voyage through times, some departments of the exhibition summarize whole centuries, while others tell in details about one specific event only. (Breakfast) Day 6-Monday, May 10, 2017 Levada Walk A fantastic walk along the Levada do Vale Paraíso, Levadas are water channels used for irrigation, where the fields and hills combine in a wonderful scenery. After the walk one enters Camacha, wicker work center of the island and is given the chance to visit the handcraft exhibit and do some shopping. (Breakfast) Day 7-Tuesday, May 09, 2017 Leisure Day Enjoy your last day in Madeira at leisure, take advantage of the 5 star hotel amenities to recharge your batteries, and take in the beautiful views of the Atlantic Ocean. Indulge in the ‘Old’ center, with its port and promenade, quaint and narrow winding streets, shops, cafés, bars and restaurants. Providence, RI 02914 401-434-1454 [email protected] www.SagresVacations.com Day 8-Wednesday, May 10, 2017 Santana, Faial, Pico do Areeiro East Tour. We leave Funchal on the road to Poiso. Arriving in Poiso, we take a detour to Pico do Areeiro, the third highest point in the Island, at 1810 m. On a clear day the view over the island’s hinterland is remarkable. Back towards Poiso, heading through the Laurissilva, or primitive forest of Madeira, towards Ribeiro Frio. This is a place blessed by especially rich vegetation, with plants unique to the island. There is also a small trout farm that has become an obligatory stop for any visitor. Lunch will take place in a local restaurant at Faial. Back to the main road and following it towards Santana. Here triangular houses, with thatched roofs and picturesque gardens, compose one of this island’s traditional picture postcard images. We then head towards Porto da Cruz, and up to Portela, to admire a fascinating view over the valley and the imposing rock of Penha d’Águia. Following the road, we continue to the town of Machico, the landing point for the discoverers of Madeira and home to the islands oldest church. Return to Funchal. (Breakfast, Lunch) Day 9- Thursday, May 11, 2017- Depart Funchal, Madeira to Boston After breakfast, it is time to bid “Adeus” to Madeira. Our memories of the past seven days will ensure that the last seven days will be forever linked with the Madeiran spirit and energy, and the great fellowship shared with our group. The Pearl of the Atlantic, Madeira awaits your return.
