Astronomy Week in Madeira, Portugal Best Practices Best
Astronomy Week in Madeira, Portugal Best Practices Best P. Augusto J. L. Sobrinho Keywords Universidade da Madeira and Centro de Universidade da Madeira and Centro de Public Outreach, Informal Education, Astronomia e Astrofísica da Universidade Astronomia e Astrofísica da Universidade de Exhibitions, Non-traditional Events de Lisboa, Portugal Lisboa, Portugal [email protected] [email protected] Summary The outreach programme Semanas da Astronomia (Astronomy Weeks) is held in late spring or summer on the island of Madeira, Portugal. This programme has been attracting enough interest to be mentioned in the regional press/TV/radio every year and is now, without doubt, the astronomical highlight of the year on Madeira. We believe that this programme is a good case study for showing how to attract the general public to astronomy in a small (population 250 000, area 900 km2) and fairly isolated place such as Madeira. Our Astronomy Weeks have been different each year and have so far included exhibitions, courses, talks, a forum, documentaries, observing sessions (some with blackouts), music and an astro party. These efforts may contribute towards putting Madeira on the map with respect to observational astronomy, and have also contributed to the planned installation of two observatories in the island. The relevance of the Astronomy the trails known as the Levada Walks, so Weeks for Madeira that tourism is, by far, the main industry on Madeira. As a natural consequence, The Semanas da Astronomia began in many (nature) themed Festas (festivals) 2001. The success of the programme has now take place throughout the year. For varied over the years. -
Portugal – Madeira 2017
Madeira 8–12 July 2017 Pelagic Extension to 15 July Participants John Thorogood Brian Roberts-Wray Emma Rees-Wray Massimiliano Dettori James and Vivienne Harvey Frederick Alway Bahar Bilgen William Dixon Robin Griffiths Leaders Catarina Correia-Fagundes and Hugo Romano Trocaz Pigeon Day 1 Most of the group arrived at Madeira’s airport around 19:30 after a 40-minutes delay on the flight schedule and our guides were waiting for us outside the baggage claim to take us to the hotel. The drive to the hotel was only five minutes and after check-in we had dinner and a nice rest after it. Day 2 We started the day visiting the most arid area in Madeira, on the eastern tip, Ponta de São Lourenço, where we watched Berthelot’s Pipits, Eurasian Kestrels and Clouded Yellow Butterflies. We only had a glimpse of two Rock Petronias flying and sitting on a rock for less than 20 seconds which did not allow everyone to have a good look at them through the telescope. Then we drove to the centre of the village of Caniçal where we looked for Spanish Sparrows and where a male displayed quite well. A male Blackcap and Eurasian Collared- doves were also observed here. After we headed to the north side of the island, to Faial, in search for the endemic Trocaz Pigeon and where we were very successful watching a few flying and others sitting on branches on open view. Lunch was taken at a restaurant with a really nice view over the green cliffs diving into the blue of the ocean and from where we saw more Eurasian Kestrels and Trocaz Pigeons flying and a Eurasian Sparrowhawk. -

AERC Wplist July 2015
AERC Western Palearctic list, July 2015 About the list: 1) The limits of the Western Palearctic region follow for convenience the limits defined in the “Birds of the Western Palearctic” (BWP) series (Oxford University Press). 2) The AERC WP list follows the systematics of Voous (1973; 1977a; 1977b) modified by the changes listed in the AERC TAC systematic recommendations published online on the AERC web site. For species not in Voous (a few introduced or accidental species) the default systematics is the IOC world bird list. 3) Only species either admitted into an "official" national list (for countries with a national avifaunistic commission or national rarities committee) or whose occurrence in the WP has been published in detail (description or photo and circumstances allowing review of the evidence, usually in a journal) have been admitted on the list. Category D species have not been admitted. 4) The information in the "remarks" column is by no mean exhaustive. It is aimed at providing some supporting information for the species whose status on the WP list is less well known than average. This is obviously a subjective criterion.
