Over the years I have managed to come across a few artifacts and photographs, and I feel I have enough now to at least paint a very basic picture of this segment of the association’s history. Special thanks to Zsuzsanna Miskolczy for help with translations, and with the acquisition of copies of the original Magyar Front from the Széchényi Library in Hungary. Our second article is a treat courtesy of well-known writer Dr. László Prohászka. He is an expert on 19th and 20th century, as well as contemporary Hungarian sculpture, numismatic art, military history as well as art history aspects of Hungarian-Polish relations. His first work was published in 1978 – to date he is the author of eleven books and many publications and he has co-written numerous encyclopaedias. His most significant book, Szoborhistóriák (Sculpture Histories) was published by MAGYAR FRONT Városháza Kiadó in 2004, in Budapest; and his monographs on sculptors include Ligeti VOLUME XVIII, ISSUE 1 Miklós (Kapoli Múzeum & Galéria, Balatonlelle, 2001) and Dabóczi Mihály (Körmendi WINTER 2016 Galéria, Budapest, 2006).
Angliát külügyminisztere, Sir Edward Grey, Ausztria–Magyarországot, Franciaországot, Németországot, Olaszországot, Oroszországot londoni nagykövetük képviselte.2 A zárt ajtók mögött folyó üléseken Grey elnökölt. 1913. december 16-tól szintén Londonban ülésezett a Balkán–szövetségbe tömörült államok (Bulgária, Görögország, Montenegro, Szerbia) és Törökország békekonferenciája. Az angol külügyminiszter tiszteletbeli elnökként az ítélőbíró szerepét töltötte be a balkáni kis államok egymással és a törökökkel folytatott területi vitáiban.3 A konferencia 1913. március 22-én döntést hozott arról, hogy Scutari városa a jövőben az önálló Albániához tartozzék, március 29-én pedig nemzetközi flottademonstrációról született döntés.4 1 A tanulmány az 1995–96 folyamán a Collegium Hungaricum ösztöndíjasaként Bécsben végzett kutatásaim eredményeként született. • The Whitehead Factory and the Orders of the Austro-Hungarian Navy, Especially the Whitehead Submarines 1904-1914
    I. međunarodna konferencija u povodu 150. obljetnice tvornice torpeda u Rijeci i očuvanja riječke industrijske baštine 135 THE WHITEHEAD FACTORY AND THE ORDERS OF THE AUSTRO-HUNGARIAN NAVY, ESPECIALLY THE WHITEHEAD SUBMARINES 1904-1914 Dr. phil. Mihály Krámli Transport museum, Budapest, Hungary The development of the Austro-Hungarian Navy came to a sudden standstill for about a decade and a half following Wilhelm von Tegetthoff’s death (1871). The slow improvement of the fleet began in the 1890s. The budget of the navy amounted 7 percent of that of the whole armed forces’s at that period. As a result of the energetic development, having commenced afterwards, the rate of the fleet’s budget rose above 10 percent after the turn of the century and reached 25 percent in 1913.1 Altough it was only later that intensive improvement began, the 1890s brought in important changes. While the navy strongly depended on armour and gun imports before, this decade witnessed the growth of its industrial background in Austria, stimulated by an increasing number of domestic orders from the command of the naval forces. All this had a positive effect on the navy: due to the growing number of orders, previously anti-fleet Austrian politicians became adherent of fleet developments. Hungary, having paid a share proportion - the so called quota - of the budget of the common army and thus the navy (31.4-36.4 percent), practically did not get any orders from tha navy before the 1890s, except Whitehead torpedoes. In 1893 Hungarian legislation (delegation) had its first claim on the navy giving Hungary more orders.2 In the same time members of Austrian delegation began to call upon the navy to give more orders to the Austrian industry.
