C ULTURAL IDENT I TY STUD I E S The South Tyrol Question, CIS 1866–2010 Georg Grote From National Rage to Regional State South Tyrol is a small, mountainous area located in the central Alps. Despite its modest geographical size, it has come to represent a success story in the Georg Grote protection of ethnic minorities in Europe. When Austrian South Tyrol was given to Italy in 1919, about 200,000 German and Ladin speakers became Italian citizens overnight. Despite Italy’s attempts to Italianize the South Tyroleans, especially during the Fascist era from 1922 to 1943, they sought to Question, 1866–2010 Tyrol South The maintain their traditions and language, culminating in violence in the 1960s. In 1972 South Tyrol finally gained geographical and cultural autonomy from Italy, leading to the ‘regional state’ of 2010. This book, drawing on the latest research in Italian and German, provides a fresh analysis of this dynamic and turbulent period of South Tyrolean and European history. The author provides new insights into the political and cultural evolution of the understanding of the region and the definition of its role within the European framework. In a broader sense, the study also analyses the shift in paradigms from historical nationalism to modern regionalism against the backdrop of European, global, national and local historical developments as well as the shaping of the distinct identities of its multilingual and multi-ethnic population. Georg Grote was born in the Lower Rhine Valley in northwest Germany. He has lived in Ireland since 1993 and lectures in Western European history at CIS University College Dublin.

  • Hornmilben (Acari, Oribatida) in Auwäldern an Der Etsch Und Talfer (Südtirol, Italien)
Gredleriana Vol. 4 / 2004 pp. 93 - 114 Hornmilben (Acari, Oribatida) in Auwäldern an der Etsch und Talfer (Südtirol, Italien) Heinrich Schatz Abstract: Oribatid mites (Acari, Oribatida) in riparian forests on the rivers Adige and Talvera (South Tyrol, Italy) A total of 73 oribatid species was recorded in riparian forests on the river Adige between Merano and Salorno and the river Talvera at Bolzano. Among them, 42 species are new records for South Tyrol and 4 species for Italy. The occurrence in the investigated habitats as well as published re- cords in the Italian Alps, distribution in Austria, general distribution and ecological data are pre- sented for each species. Keywords: Acari, Oribatida, riparian communities, faunistics, Alps, Italy 1.

  • Coleoptera, Staphylinidae) an Der Talfer Bei Bozen (Südtirol, Italien)
Gredleriana Vol. 7 / 2007 pp. 209 - 218 Uferbewohnende Kurzflügelkäfer (Coleoptera, Staphylinidae) an der Talfer bei Bozen (Südtirol, Italien) Irene Schatz Abstract Riparian rove beetles (Coleoptera, Staphylinidae) from the River Talfer in Bolzano (South Tyrol, Italy) The banks of the River Talfer in the city of Bolzano were sampled for terrestrial arthropods during one day in june (“biodiversity day” 2003). A total of 37 species of rove beetles where captured, including 6 rare species. Stenus melanarius, a species considered missing in South Tyrol, is recorded as the most remarkable find. A high percentage of red-listed species (60 %) emphasizes the role of riparian habitats for threatened species. The diversity of microhabitats within the limited area investigated is sufficient to support 18 stenotopic ripicolous species of rove beetles belonging to 5 different ecological guilds. Keywords: Coleoptera, Staphylinidae, riparian habitat, Alps, Italy 1.

Tirol-Adria Ltd. 95 Wilton Road Suite 3 London SW1V 1 BZ United Kingdom www.tirol-adria.com [email protected] Project B: Danube-Tyrol-Adriatic Sea-Waterway The ship’s passage A waterway from the Danube to the Adriatic Sea The Danube-Tyrol-Adriatic Sea-Waterway, a project of the Tirol-Adria Ltd.. is a transalpine ship’s passage of 700 kilometers in length and connects Passau on the Danube with Venice. It leads from the Danube via the Inn, Adige, Lake Garda, Mincio and Po to the Adriatic Sea and runs to approximately 88 kilometers in cannal tunnels. 1 Visual material with kind permission of: RMD Wasserstrassen Geography and history The rivers Inn and Adige draw deep furrows in the Alps and close each other in the shallow section to 70 kilometers. Until the mid-19th century both were navigable and were mainly used for carrying goods. There were even plans to tow the ships above the Brenner, to spare the transshipping and cumbersome intermediate transport over land from one river to the other. An example of such a ship transport on land: In the year 1438 the Venetians moved 82 warships in just 15 days from the Adige on the ridge at Mori to Lake Garda, to supply the residents of Brescia with military assistance. With the commissioning of the railway in the second half of the 19th century, freight traffic shifted to rail. Water transport lost due to the sluggish introduction of techincal achievements (steam engines and ships’ propeller) rapidly in importance. Yet a century later it is the road, which absorbs the largest share of the rapidly growing goods traffic.
