ПЕТАР Б. БОГУНОВИЋ УДК 94(497.11) Нови Сад Оригиналан научни рад Република Србија Примљен: 21.01.2018 Одобрен: 23.02.2018 Страна: 577-600 GENS VLACHORUM IN HISTORIA SERBORUMQUE SLAVORUM (Vlachs in the History of the Serbs and Slavs) Part 1 Summary: This article deals with the issue of the term Vlach, that is, its genesis, dis- persion through history and geographical distribution. Also, the article tries to throw a little more light on this notion, through a multidisciplinary view on the part of the population that has been named Vlachs in the past or present. The goal is to create an image of what they really are, and what they have never been, through a specific chronological historical overview of data related to the Vlachs. Thus, it allows the reader to understand, through the facts presented here, the misconceptions that are related to this term in the historiographic literature. Key words: Vlachs, Morlachs, Serbs, Slavs, Wallachia, Moldavia, Romanian Orthodox Church The terms »Vlach«1, or later, »Morlach«2, does not represent the nationality, that is, they have never represented it throughout the history, because both of this terms exclusively refer to the members of Serbian nation, in the Serbian ethnic area. –––––––––––– [email protected] 1 Serbian (Cyrillic script): влах. »Now in answer to all these frivolous assertions, it is sufficient to observe, that our Morlacchi are called Vlassi, that is, noble or potent, for the same reason that the body of the nation is called Slavi, which means glorious; that the word Vlah has nothing

  • Islam: State and Religion in Modern Europe by Patrick Franke
Islam: State and Religion in Modern Europe by Patrick Franke From the early Middle Ages until the beginning of the twentieth century, Islamic states were an integral part of Europe's political geography. Throughout the modern period the Ottoman Empire, with its capital in Istanbul, was the most important Islamic power on the continent. The Ottoman conquest of south‐eastern Europe, which was already well advanced in the 15th century, initiated a phase of Islamization that came in several waves before ending in the 19th century. Other important centres of European Islam were the Iberian Peninsula (until the early 17th century), the Russian Volga‐Ural region, and the Crimea. The decline of the European Islamic states (Granada, the eastern European Khanates, the Ottoman Empire) put many Muslims under the rule of non‐Islamic states, each of which reacted with the development of its own particular policies for dealing with Islam. For the Muslim populations, this loss of power resulted in important processes of modernization. TABLE OF CONTENTS 1. Islamic Statehood in Europe between 1450 and 1950 2. The southern Iberian Peninsula1 was home to the Nasrid Emirate of Granada, which, however, was in decline in this period. In 1485 the Christian states of Castile and Aragon began their systematic conquest of the Emirate, at a time when the Muslims were exhausting their energies in a civil war.

Since the beginning of the war in Croatia (1991-95) when the state media stimulated the production of popular music conveying appropriate narratives of national identity, Croatian popular music has been a site for the articulation of explicit national narratives of identity. The practice has continued into the present day, reflecting political and social change in Croatia (e.g. the growth of the war veterans lobby and protests against the Hague Tribunal).

THE MAKING OF SULTAN SÜLEYMAN: A STUDY OF PROCESS/ES OF IMAGE-MAKING AND REPUTATION MANAGEMENT by NEV ĐN ZEYNEP YELÇE Submitted to the Institute of Social Sciences in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in History Sabancı University June, 2009 © Nevin Zeynep Yelçe 2009 All Rights Reserved To My Dear Parents Ay şegül and Özer Yelçe ABSTRACT THE MAKING OF SULTAN SÜLEYMAN: A STUDY OF PROCESS/ES OF IMAGE-MAKING AND REPUTATION MANAGEMENT Yelçe, Nevin Zeynep Ph.D., History Supervisor: Metin Kunt June 2009, xv+558 pages This dissertation is a study of the processes involved in the making of Sultan Süleyman’s image and reputation within the two decades preceding and following his accession, delineating the various phases and aspects involved in the making of the multi-layered image of the Sultan. Handling these processes within the framework of Sultan Süleyman’s deeds and choices, the main argument of this study is that the reputation of Sultan Süleyman in the 1520s was the result of the convergence of his actions and his projected image. In the course of this study, main events of the first ten years of Sultan Süleyman’s reign are conceptualized in order to understand the elements employed first in making a Sultan out of a Prince, then in maintaining and enhancing the sultanic image and authority. As such, this dissertation examines the rhetorical, ceremonial, and symbolic devices which came together to build up a public image for the Sultan. Contextualized within a larger framework in terms of both time and space, not only the meaning and role of each device but the way they are combined to create an image becomes clearer.

  • Late Antique and Early Byzantine Fortifications in Bosnia and Herzegovina (Hinterland of the Province of Dalmatia)
Höhensiedlungen zwischen Antike und Mittelalter – RGA-E Band 58 – Seiten 559–594 © CopyrightLate 2008Antique Walter and de Early Gruyter Byzantine · Berlin fortifications · New York in Bosnia and Herzegovina 559 Late Antique and Early Byzantine fortifications in Bosnia and Herzegovina (hinterland of the province of Dalmatia) Perica Sˇpehar The Western Balkans came under Roman rule during the reign of Augustus, when the region of Dalmatia was established, stretching from the Arsia (Rasˇa) river in Istria in the north to the town of Lissus (Ljesˇ) in the south, and including Kvarner (the bay of Rijeka). In the north, the province of Dalmatia bordered the province of Pannonia Superior along a line lying slightly to the south of the course of the river Sava. In the east it bordered the province of Moesia Superior along a line that goes from the confluence of the Kolubara river through Cˇ acˇak and Mt. Sˇara to the Lissus. The borders established during the 1st century did not change significantly, apart from the separation of a part of the territory around the bay of Kotor and Skadar at the end of the 3rd or beginning of the 4th century to form the province of Prevalis, while in the east the province of Dalmatia bor- dered the province of Moesia I, most probably along the course of the river Drina.1 Geographically, the province of Dalmatia can be divided into two zones: the coastal and the mountainous regions. The karst coastland is dis- tinguished by its indented coastline and many islands and bays, but with a small number of fertile fields suitable for agricultural activity.

  • A Partial Exoneration of the Bosnian Church IGNIS ARDENS: a PARTIAL EXONERATION of the BOSNIAN CHURCH 2
Running head: IGNIS ARGENS: A PARTIAL EXONERATION OF THE BOSNIAN . 1 Ignis Ardens: A Partial Exoneration of the Bosnian Church IGNIS ARDENS: A PARTIAL EXONERATION OF THE BOSNIAN CHURCH 2 Abstract Some historians assume that the medieval Bosnian Church was Bogomilist in doctrine and created by Bogomils. Bogomilism was a Christian heresy that rejected or despised the image of the Cross, the Old Testament, the Saints, and matter. This study refutes the claim that the Bosnian Church was Bogomilist, as the Bosnian Church did not reject or despise the image of the Cross, the Old Testament matter, and the Saints. This study also refutes the claims that the Bosnian Church was created by Bogomils. The Bosnian Church was instead created by a monastic house and broke from Catholicism. Anthropological evidence is used to suggest that Catholic officials may have mistaken some Bosnians who absorbed pagan or magical practices to be heretics. This study concludes that the Bosnian Church became partially heretical around the fifteenth century because of its autonomy and the tendency of Bosnians to absorb aspects of other religions. Keywords: Bosnian Church, heresy, Bogomils, Patarins, asceticism, syncretism, peasants IGNIS ARDENS: A PARTIAL EXONERATION OF THE BOSNIAN CHURCH 3 Ignis Ardens: A Partial Exoneration of the Bosnian Church Historians have been divided over whether or not the medieval Bosnian Church was Bogomilist. Bogomilism is a form of Gnosticism that loathed the Cross's image, spurned the Old Testament, failed to recognize Saints, and hated the material world (Malcolm, 1994, p. 27; Runciman, 1960, p. 74; Vlasto, 1970, p. 234). On the one hand, papal sources offer evidence that the Bosnian Church was heretical (Fine, 2007, p.
