Theye must have been frequently bound up together however as here, and a rather rare 1723 re-isue united the two with a general title page, there by then having been the second edition of the first work. The whoe, thing constitutes Elias Ashmole's tribute to his old friend havign edited the manuscript of his autobiography [now in the Bodleian] and completeing it down to Lilly's death in his own hand. Though not much of a literary effort it throws much light on the life of this 17th Century astrologer, who by some was blamed for the Great Fire of London [which supposedly he predicted]. This and other sensationlist material is announced on the title page ['Tryal of Isaac Antrobus...for Baptizing a Cock by the Name of Peter, and committing Adultery with a Woman and her Daughter'. etc], but the work was only given serious notice when republished with Ashmole's own autobiography in 1771. £250.00

None of the three folios is commonly met with. An important revisionist rake on 17th century English history. The Studley Park copy, with Earl of Ripon's 19th Century bookplate £250.00

It is interesting to note that this was published in the same year as the murder of Nadir Shah, when much detsruction in and around Shiraz took place, making these views of great documentary value. This portion of the work is attributed to the Scottish author John Campbell, the illustrations evidently copied from De Bruijn whose famous pioneering 1703 survey was published in 1711. A collection of plates called 'Persepolis Illustrata' was published in London in 1739, comprising 21 views and the present collection may be copied from these. £200.00

Considering the importance and influence of Petrach in Rennaisance culture it is suprising that no such collection of sonnets had appeared before, although various parts of Petrarch's work, including sonnets, had of course appeared over the previous two cerntures. Alexander Tytler would later [1785] provide a fuller life of the poet together with some translations but there is no evidence he was responsible for the present translation, and Dr John Nott of Bristol who would later translate Hafez into English has been suggested as a likely candidate [ONDB}. The present collection comprises 30 sonnets and 3 odes, as well as the sonnet on Laura' tomb. £60.00

"Strongly against the Catholic doctrine on transubstantiation, he belonged to the "Durham House group" headed by Richard Neile. He was an early anti-Calvinist among Oxford theologians. He made his views known only in the late , but stated that around 1605 he had already decided against predestination. In theology he was a syncretic Platonist. He took an interest in the Epicurean view of free will, but argued for a middle way accommodating the Stoic criticism of the Epicureans. His humanistic Platonism has been compared to that of Robert Burton; and , arguing against 's promotion of Jackson, claimed his learning only made him more dangerous." Of this work, S.M. Towers writes it 'caused a reaction when it was published in 1628. 22049. RABENER, GOTTLIEB WILHELM.: Satyres de M Rabener, Traduction Libre de l'Allemand par M de Boispreaux.

Paris, P G Simon, 1754. 4 volumes bound in 2, 12mo, title pages in red and black with engraved vignettes, bound in contemporary mottled calf, neatly rebacked, spines gilt ruled with raised bands and red label, corners worn round, original marbled endpapers preserved, a very good tidy set, FIRST EDITION IN FRENCH, said to be a free one, and by the notable translator Boispreaux, pseudonym of Benigne Dijardin. The satirical essays of Rabener had created quite a stir in literary circles after their first publication in book form in the original German in 1751. with further volumes published later. Many of the essays using clever irony satirize Rabener's own literary and critical profession, notoriously the one in which he ridicules the use of footnotes by creating parody of the practice. An English translation appeared in 1757. £75.00

[302], a very good clean copy, FIRST EDITION, ESTCT 127345. "William Walton’s dates are recorded as 1715- 1780. He may have been the Roman Catholic bishop who is recorded as having been acting in Lancashire towards the end of this period. Walton states that this (Roman Catholic) contribution to the debate about miracles was provoked by the way in which Conyers Middleton and others had harmed ‘the interests of Christianity’ (p. iii). In particular, while various people had responded to Middleton, Walton considers that they are deficient in only considering miracles that occurred in the first two or three centuries of the church whereas ‘they might have deduced a succession of the same wonderful works into the later ages’ (p. iv)...Although the argument from miracles, widely used in eighteenth-centuryapologetics to authenticate claims about divine revelation, is here used against Protestants,Walton’s need to dismiss the ‘pretended miracles’ascribed to ‘the Abbé de Paris’ is a reminder thatthe argument can be used to warrant more thanits initial employers want." -Pailin Library Catalogue. £90.00

Volume one comprises the first collected edition, first issue, of the Seasons, Thomson's most famous and successful poetical exercise, and including 5 plates by William Kent; in this issue the later poem 'Brittania' is not included. Volume the Second comprises the whole of 'Liberty' in its original five parts, only part one being the second issue without price on the title page. Sophonisba is in its second quarto printing specially done for this volume, and, as in some copies, the first edition of the 1737 poem to Lord Talbot is appended at the end. This first 'collective' edition of Thompson, including as it does mostly first editions is very scarce and collectable; Foxon suggests that these are all printings on fine paper and to find them in uncut state in contemporary binding, is rather good news, albeit with one board detached. £320.00

18711. TOUCHET, GEORGE ANSELM.: Historical Collections, out of Several Grave Historians, concerning the Changes of Religion, And strange confusions following from thence: In the Reigns of King Henry the Eighth, Edward the Sixth. Queen Mary and Elizabeth.

[?London] 'Printed in the Year, 1674. 8vo, pp [6], 558, [2, index], bound in contemporary rulled calf, spine worn and chipped at ends, the free endpapers removed, a few patches of marginal worming, else sound internally, FIRST EDITION, a rare and curious work of Catholic propoganda in England during the reign of Charles II, aimed at setting the record straight on the Reformation in opposition to the views of Heylyn and others; it is composed mainly of exceprts from Protestant historians joined by a narrative thred. George Anselm Touchet [d ?1689] was the second son of the ill fated Earl of Castleham; considering the scandelous circumstances of his father's trial and execution it is hardly suprizing that he should chose to become a Benedictine monk, eventually chaplain of Queen Catherine of Berganza, during the short space in which Charles II allowed Catholic priests to offociate in England. It was during this period that the present work was published with no author, printer or place of printing, only the date 1674; the following year, however, due to Protestant pressure at court, all Catholic priests, including Touchet, were banished from England, and Touchet was later specifically excluded frominheriting the Earldom of his brother. The Popish Plot affair shortly afterwards would have made this book a dangerous one to own, which may account for its comparative rarity; the subsequent history of Toucet is unknown, but he is supposed to have died in about 1689. £250.00

Turberville, who died in 1678 was a priest ordained at Douai, lived mostly in England, but all printings of his 'Abridgment' are evidently rare. £125.00

18716. VOLTAIRE.: Œuvres de Mr de Voltaire.

[Lyon?], 1775. 40 volumes, 8vo, including the 3 volumes of Pieces Detachees, some volumes with plates [mainly from the plays, plus a few portraits, illustratiosn to Henriade etc], bound in contemporary French mottled calf, spines gilt with double red labels, a little rubbed, worn to a few headbands, some joints and boards with insect holes to the leather, but basically quite sound and strong throughout, internally fine and clean throughout. This edition is generally held to be a French conterfeit of the edition published in Geneva by Cramer and Bader in 1775, which was edited by Voltaire himself, and is regarded as, in a sense, the definitive edition in the author's lifetime. This edition preserved the excellent typography and typographical page borders throuhgout of the Geneva edition, but the type setting is different and to complicate matters a recent bibliography states 'Imitation [i.e. of Cramer's Edition] mais avec des textes tirés de plusieurs autres sources. Le rôle qu’a pu jouer Voltaire dans cette édition reste à éclaircir]. In any case this is an excellent complete set from the library of Lord Eldon, Lord Chancellor of England during the early years of the 19th Century. £500.00

19797. WARTON, THOMAS.: Observations on the Fairy Queen of Spenser.

London, R and J Dodsley [and J Fletcher, Oxford], 1762. 2 volumes bound in one, small 8vo, pp [4], 228, xx; 270, bound in contemporary quarter calf, lacking label and rubbed to the spine, joints cracked but holding, interally a very clean copy, SECOND EDITION, 'CORRECTED AND ENLARGED.' The best edition of this early masterpiece of literary criticism. 'In the second edition of the Observations Thomas Warton expanded the Postscript to include a ringing endorsement of chivalry and romantic poetry as a neglected body of writing of value to scholarship, history, morality, and aesthetic pleasure. The preface also underscores Warton's original contribution to Spenser scholarship.' £75.00

15937. WATTS, ISAAC. GUY, DAVID [OF RYE, SUSSEX].: A Complete Index to Dr Watts's Psalms; wherein Reference is had to each Line of the Work, and the Whole digested into an Easy and Natural Alphabetical Order, agreeable to the Doctor's own Index.

London, J Buckland, G Keith and J Johnson, 'and By the Compiler, at Rye', 1774. 12mo, pp x, [250], lacking the 2 final edvert leaves, bound in contemporary sheep, cracked at joints and worn at spine ends, but quite sound, free endpapers removed, a sound copy, FIRST EDITION, a very curious volume, not perhaps in terms of content, but as regards the compiler himself and his Rye connections; David Guy is recorded as compiler of a devotional work published in Rye itself, and 'Index to Dr Watt's Hymns' which he issued the year previous to this one, in 1773; together these two volumes comprise line indexes to Watts' ever popular Hymns and Psalms. Little is known of David Guy of Rye, except that he was an ironmaster -the deed for his ironworks briefly referred to in Straker's 'Wealden Iron', and it is likely that he came from a long line of ironmakers. The reference on the title to the work being sold 'by the compiler at Rye', without precise address would suggest that he owned some kind of shop, almost certainly a ironmongery, from where copies of his books could be obtained. Most interestingly perhaps, though evidently a devoutly religious, and perhaps non- Conformist Christian, for an ironmaster he displays amzing editorial erudition in his 10 page preface, explaining the difficulties of collating different editions of Watts' text to have his index references fit - 'all the editions...before that of 1771 have 318 pages; but those of 1771, and since, have but 317...the reader who makes use of those editions printed before 1771...if he does not find his line in the page referred to, he will be sure to find it at or near the top of the following page.' Although a number of copies are recorded in various libraries, this is a very rare work in commerce. £120.00

As a work, somewhat rambling and sometimes autobiographical, it provides a background to the study of Roman classics through the study of Rome's antiquities, in a series of 'conversations' or lessons; the work might have been useful to those preparing for 'The Grand Tour', or in the study of classical arts and their interpreation; the work was indeed recommended for this pupose by Benjamin West. £125.00
