Literature pre 1800 19287. ABBADIE, JACQUES.: The History of the Late Conspiracy against the King and the Nation. With a Particular Account of the Lancashire Plot, and All the other Attempts and Machinations of the disaffected Party, since His Majesty's Accession to the Throne. London, Daniel Brown and Tho Bennet, 1696. 8vo, pp [2], 195, [1], bound in later 19th Century library half morocco, text with a few light blidn stamps, else unmarked, upper board detached, internally a clean sound copy for rebinding, FIRST EDITION; the conspiracies against William and Mary, Jacobite in origin, are largely forgotten as being of a soewhat abortive and less series nature than the later Jacobite rebellions, but as detailed here by Abbadie, who wrote this work originally in French, they form an interesting background to subsequent events. Lancashire, hotbed of Catholic discontent after the Glorious Revolution, attempted in 1694 to raise a Jacobite army to restore James II to the throne, but it never got far. At the end of this copy is an early manuscript page of the names of the gentlemen of the Grand Jury who sat in judgement on the accused. £100.00 17873. London, Henry Hills, 1709. 8vo,. pp 16, disbound, trimmed a little cloase at top edge slightly touching page numerals, else a very good copy, FIRST EDITION, at least in this separate form, first published in 'Letters from Italy' 1703; this issue with 'O'er the warm bed' on page 4, Foxon A39. 'The Despairing Lover' is by Wiliam Walsh; the second poem, by Congreve, was first printed in 1695. £15.00 18311. ALLESTREE, RICHARD [ATTRIBUTED].: The Gentlemans Calling. London, T Garthwait, 1660. Small 8vo, pp [32], 175, [1], with two fine engraved title pages and 2 engraved plates, pleasantly bound in half black polished morocco by Robertson of Edinburgh, raised bands, all edges gilt, some small corner repairs [done by Zaehnsdorf in 1949], but a sound and attractive copy, FIRST EDITION; issue with 175 pages followed by table of contents, and no epistle at the beginning initialled 'H.H.', this and subsequent volumes of 'courtesy' books, by the author of 'The Whole Duty of Man' are supposed to be the work of Richard Allestree. The first item is usually ascribed to the publisher John Almon, friend and defender of John Wilkes. The constitutional issues rasied by the prosecution of John Wilkes for publishing No 45 of the North Briton in 1764 would draw forth a huge pamphlet war, during which John Almon was summoned to appear before the King's Bench for contempt in publishing his pamphlet on the subject. £145.00 16602. Small 8vo, pp 46, disbound, a very good copy, NOUVELLE EDITION, prviously printed in Toulouse, 1756, here with a new introduction; according to Quaerard quoting Barbier ' Sanglante ironie contre l'abbe de Caveirac', a strange satire on the inquisition, suggesting its establishment by the King of France in North America, the forcing of English Protestants there it accept Ctholic dogma, and even the secret burning of all unconverted heretics there! Morellet's liberal philosophy was to influence Voltaire. £50.00 21146. Celebrated collection of neo Platonic literature, translated by Compain de Saint Martin and first published in Paris in 1707. £60.00 17237. ATTERBURY, FRANCIS.: Sermons and Discourses on Several Subjects and Occasions WITH: Sermons on Several Occasions...Published from the Originals, By Thomas Moore. London, J Bettenham for Jonah Bowyer, 1726/ George James, sold by C Davis, 1734. 2 works in 4 volumes, 8vo, with portrait in volume one, well bound in contemporary panelled calf, spines gilt with raised bands, some labels chipped or missing, a few light joint cracks, but a very good sound clean set, FIRST EDITION of the collected sermons in two works, each of two volumes, the first published by himself, the second published posthumously by his chaplain. Atterbury's sermons, products of a mind of great learning and erudition, did not attract the controversy that his political or Jacobite leanings did. £125.00 17138. London, William Bowyer, 1721. 8vo, pp [66, including subscribers], 464, [41], 2 engraved portraits, folding table, text in English and Latin, bound in contemporary panelled calf, red label, joints lightly cracked but sound, a fine copy internally, FIRST EDITION; the life in Latin with letters at the end in English. John Barwick [1612-84], was an eminent Royalist divine, whose services to the cause during the Civil War earned him a royal chaplaincy after the Restoration. His brother Peter was a physician who died in 1705, this being a posthumous publication. £145.00 19724. In this tract Bear (or Beare), to whom this work is ascribed, maintains that while the doctrine of the resurrection to postmortem life ‘has in great measure been made the Scoff, Derision, and Laughter of Mankind’, and, as ‘a work above Nature’, is beyond the scope of ‘NaturalPhilosophy’, it is ‘fixt on immovable Foundations’ since it is revealed in the Bible. Chez Roult, 1785. 8vo, 2 parts in one volume, pp li, [1], 199, [1], bound in slightly later quarter calf, spine gilt ruled with red label,, rubbed, internally with light spotting and few light stains, but generally a very good copy, ?SECOND AUTHORIZED EDITION; there were many printings of the play after its first performance in Paris in 1784, many of them spurrious. Ignoring the manefestly inaccurate Amsterdam printings which were based upon verbatum performance notes, the Prais first ediiton is an illustrated volume issued shortly before by Roult, with 237 pages; after that,. this is the most significant of the early editions. £125.00 20041. Amsterdam, no publisher, 1785. 8vo, 2 parts in one volume, with the main libretto bound after the preface, pp lvii, [1]; 118, bound in slightly later half calf, spine gilt ruled with black lable, a little rubbed, internally a fine clean copy, EARLY UNAUTHORIZED EDITION; there was many such printings in 1785 was the play became a cause celebre all over Europe, with copies in short supply. Some, perhaps includign this one, were based on copies made during theatre performance, with all the consequent inaccuracies; the caste list on the title page verso contains so many inaccuracies that it is possibly made up from dictation.
