  • Datuk Kamarudin Meranun Co-Founder, Executive Chairman of Airasia Malaysia and Group CEO of Airasia X
Datuk Kamarudin Meranun Co-Founder, Executive Chairman of AirAsia Malaysia and Group CEO of AirAsia X Datuk Kamarudin Bin Meranun is the co-founder of AirAsia. Together with his business partner and long-time friend, Tony Fernandes, they acquired struggling domestic airline AirAsia in December 2001 and relaunched it as a pioneer of low-cost travel in Asia. Even with no prior airline experience, the dynamic duo transformed AirAsia from a two-aircraft startup into Asia's best and largest low- cost carrier by passengers carried and jet fleet. Fundamental to this success was Datuk Kamarudin’s vast experience in the financial industry and his leadership in setting the business direction, which paved the way for AirAsia to become one of the world's best airlines. On 6 November 2013, Datuk Kamarudin was appointed Executive Chairman of AirAsia Berhad, where he takes the lead in engaging with the government, aviation regulators and airport authorities of Malaysia. Before his designation as Executive Chairman, he was AirAsia Deputy Group CEO. Datuk Kamarudin was appointed AirAsia X Group CEO on 30 January 2015 to take charge of developing the overarching strategy for AirAsia's long-haul, low-cost business, which consists of AirAsia X Berhad, Thai AirAsia X and Indonesia AirAsia Extra. Prior to joining AirAsia, Datuk Kamarudin worked at Arab-Malaysian Merchant Bank from 1988 to 1993 as a Portfolio Manager, managing both institutional and high net-worth individual clients' investment funds. In 1994, he was appointed Executive Director of Innosabah Capital Management Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of Innosabah Securities Sdn Bhd.

  • A Case Study on Critical Success Factors of Airasia
A Case Study on Critical Success Factors of AirAsia Yerkezhan Mamrina1, Daisy Mui Hung Kee2, Aidos Tursynbay3, Dravyaayajnaah A/P Jayagopal4, Hanis Aribah Binti Mohd Athiyah5, Rouslan Muhamach6 Universiti Sains Malaysia, Malaysia1,2,3,4,5,6 Correspondence Email: [email protected] ABSTRACT Existing literature has frequently highlighted how important are critical success factors in an organization. In this paper, we consider how these critical success factors affect an organization. Organizational success becomes important for many companies because it is very difficult to reach it in this competitive world. This pushed the organizations to improve their structure, strategy and management, and AirAsia is not an exception. AirAsia is one of the biggest low-cost airlines in Asia. It was registered in 1993 but began its activities only in 1996. The Airline company was chosen as the best low-cost airline in the world according to Skytrax eleven times. However, there is still a need for changes and improvements for AirAsia to become better. The findings of this paper have important implications for the managers and practitioners. The implication and recommendations are presented. Keywords: AirAsia, low-cost, organizational success, improvements, achievements, critical success factors. INTRODUCTION The airplane industry started its way less than 11 decades ago (Morris, 2017), but year by year the number of flights taken by people all over the world are rising constantly and going to reach about 40,000,000 in 2019. The number of passengers is also increasing and compared to 2016, it is forecasted to double and reach 7.8 billion in 2036 (Mazareanu, 2019).
