However, we are looking forward to better and bright- er days as we put this pandemic behind us. We are excited to offer some type of fair programming this year, and in addition to our 4-H Animal Exhibition in July, we are announcing our 2021 Saratoga County 4-H Project Exhibition on August 14th and 15th at the 4-H Training Center. This exhibition is an opportunity for our 4-H members to have “static” exhibits evaluated and exhibited, much like they would be at the Saratoga County Fair. Our Exhibitor Handbook will describe the projects that will be allowed to be exhibited at this year’s 4-H Exhi- bition. While we will not be able to offer many of our “in-person” classes, we are looking forward to seeing the amazing projects that our members have been working on in 2021. In addition to being evaluated and exhibited, projects will also be eligible for fair premiums. Evaluations will take place at the 4-H Training Cen- ter on Wednesday, August 11th and Thursday, August 12th from 3:00-7:00pm. The Exhibition will be open to members and the public on Saturday, August 14th and Sunday, August 15th from 10:00am-3:00pm at the 4-H Training Center. Additionally, any youth or families who do not feel comfortable with coming to in-person evaluations will be able to submit an “Exhibitor Statement” and have their project evaluated and placed based on the project and Exhibitor Statement. All projects that will be evaluated in this format will need pre-arranged with the 4-H Office and dropped off at the 4-H Training Center by Monday, August 9th. We are requesting, but not requiring that entries be submitted to the 4-H office by Friday, August 6th. This will help us to organize the number and categories of evaluators and stations what we will need for the eval- uation days. Entry forms and Exhibitor Statements may be picked up at the 4-H office, or found online at cce- saratoga.org/4-h/4-h-forms/fair-forms. If you have any questions regarding the event or entries, please contact the 4-H office at 518.885.8995 or email Leland at [email protected]. Happy Summer Everyone! The Saratoga County 4-H Team 2 Junior Division 4-H and Division Superintendents Greg Stevens 4-H Issue Leader Julie Curren Program Educator Leland Bunting Resource Educator Brieanna Hughes Resource Educator This division is open only to 4-H members in Saratoga County who are enrolled in the projects represented by their exhibits. 4-H members must be enrolled in the Saratoga County 4-H Program by June 1st to be eligible to exhibit in the fair. School projects are not eligible for class entry in the 4-H Junior Department. The purpose of 4-H involvement in county fair is to highlight the accomplishments and projects of members and to complete the educational process started with projects. Rules and Regulations Exhibitor’s Handbooks are distributed ONE copy per family. This division assumes no responsibility in case of loss or damages from any cause, to stock or other exhibits; and on this condition only, are entries received. Late entries WILL NOT be accepted. There will be NO exceptions. Please don’t ask! 4-H members may exhibit at only ONE county fair. All exhibits must have been made during the current 4-H program year. In classes where age of a member is a requirement, the age will be considered as of January 1 of the current year. Cloverbuds may only exhibit in the “Cloverbud” department. All members under 8 years of age as of January 1 of the current year are considered Cloverbuds. Face to face judging of static exhibits will be on Wednesday, August 11th and Thursday, August 12th from 3:00-7:00pm at the 4-H Training Center. Members are expected to present their exhibit(s) to the respective judge(s) and remain with the exhibit(s) during judging. A special exception will be made for exhibitors who do not feel comfortable attending in-person evaluation. These exhibitors must attach and“ Exhibitor Statement” to each of their respective entries. Each exhibit must have an exhibitor’s entry tag attached to it. To attach the entry tag to the exhibit: use pins, tape, or punch a hole in one corner of the entry tag and use string to tie it on. All exhibits in this division will be governed by the same general rules and regulations that apply to other depart- ments except that no entry or membership fee will be required. No article may compete for more than one prize. All exhibits are to be in place at the 4-H Training Center by 7:00pm on Thursday, August 12th. All awards will be made according to a point system as follows. A given number of points will be assigned to excellent, good and worthy. At the end of the exhibition, the total number of points earned in all Departments will be divided into the amount of premium money available to find the value of each point. An exhibitor’s points will be totaled and the premium determined, based on the point value. Premium checks will be mailed AFTER the exhibition. Lost checks cannot be replaced. All premium checks will be VOID as of September 30 of the current year. Special County Fair awards are listed in the Special Awards Booklet available at the 4-H office or fair and presented at Achievement Night. Special prizes are listed as accurately as possible at time of printing, however, additions and subtractions are possible. Exhibits will be available for removal from 3:00-7:00pm on August 16th and 17th. It is your responsibility to have someone pick up exhibits if you can not. Any exhibits that are not picked up may be thrown out. 49 3 A Philosophy of Judging Have you developed your own philosophy of judging? Do you know why your work is judged at county Public Presentation Day? At Clothing Revue? At the Fair? Do you know who are asked to be judges? Do you accept the awards you get gracefully, whether it be blue, red, or white? If your answer is “yes” to all of these questions, you need to read no further. But many 4-H members and others do not know all the answers. Why Do We Judge? The two major purposes in judging are: 1) To determine the worth of a piece of work. How well it was done and how closely does it conform to the standards of quality. 2) To contribute to the growth and development of 4-H members and others concerned to help boys and girls learn. Who Are The Judges? Judges are people! They are asked to be judges because they have special training and background in certain subject matter areas. Not all judges have the same training and same background in the same subject matter area and that is why judges sometimes differ in their opinions and ideas as to how something should be done. The process of judging will never be perfect. Judges can evaluate only what they see. They can’t know how hard one member has worked or what obstacles another may have had to overcome. So, they must judge just what they see according to a standard. They can guess a little about what to expect from members of a certain age, or years of experience in demonstrating, but even here there is
