Er enthält die nach Erscheinen der jeweiligen Jahrgangsbände aufge- fundenen Briefe (Nachträge) sowie das Gesamtregister, das den Briefkorpus als Ganzes systematisch erschließt. Rita Aldenhoff-Hübinger zeichnet für die Edition der Nachträge, Edith Hanke für die Erstellung des Gesamtregisters verantwortlich. Die Editorinnen danken allen, die sie bei ihren Arbeiten unterstützt haben. Ohne kollegiale Hinweise und Hilfe wären die Recherchen nach bislang un- bekannten Briefen nicht so erfolgreich verlaufen. VIII Vorwort Die Editionsarbeiten wurden von der Bayerischen Akademie der Wissen- schaften im Rahmen der Forschungsförderung der Union der deutschen Aka- demien der Wissenschaften sowie der Berthold Leibinger Stiftung und Georg Siebeck gefördert. Briefe, S. IX. – 2. Gesamtregister, S. XIII. Der Band besteht aus zwei Teilen: den Nachträgen und dem Gesamtregister der Abteilung II der Max Weber-Gesamtausgabe. 1. Briefe Der erste Teil, überschrieben „Nachträge“, enthält 68 Briefe, Karten und Brief- entwürfe. Dabei handelt es sich um Schreiben, die zeitlich in die jeweiligen Briefbände gehören, aber erst nach deren Erscheinen aufgefunden wurden, ferner um undatierbare oder nur annähernd datierbare Briefe, die sich keinem dieser Bände zuordnen ließen. Nachdem die Bände II/1 bis II/10 im Jahre 2017 vorlagen, waren weitere Recherchen erforderlich. Die intensive Digitali- sierung von Nachlässen förderte darüber hinaus Originale auch in Beständen zu Tage, die zuvor von den Mitarbeitern der Max Weber-Gesamtausgabe mit traditionellen Mitteln durchsucht worden waren. Auch auf dem privaten Auto- graphen-Markt tauchten Briefe Max Webers auf, die bislang als verschollen galten. Einige Lücken können also mit diesem Band geschlossen werden.1 Doch Vollständigkeit ist sicherlich immer noch nicht erreicht. Eine Besonderheit stellen Briefe dar, die bisher auf der Grundlage von Ab- schriften ediert wurden und von denen die Originale inzwischen bekannt sind.2 In diesem Band werden die neu aufgefundenen Originale ediert. Allein ihre Edition ist maßgeblich. Ein Vergleich zwischen Abschrift und Original zeigt, daß die von Marianne Weber nach dem Tod ihres Mannes angelegten 1 Dies betrifft beispielsweise solche im Petersburger Institut russkoj literatury; vgl. die Briefe an Alexander A. Die Abschriften, die mit Ausnahme des Briefs an Aby War- burg, auf Marianne Weber zurückgehen, wurden zuvor ediert in MWG II/5, S. 45–47, 390 f., 556–563 sowie II/7, S. 282 f. und 358–360. Der Brief Max Webers an Gerhart von Schulze- Gaevernitz vom 21. Oktober 1916, unten, S. 132, stellt ebenfalls eine Besonderheit dar: bislang war er nur als Abschrift bekannt, die Marianne Weber 1921 in der ersten Auflage der „Gesammelten Politischen Schriften“ publizierte und der auch die MWG II/9, S. 552, folgte. Hier wird das neu aufgefundene Original ediert. X Zur Anlage des Bandes Abschriften Auslassungen aufweisen, wo es um Persönliches oder um Kritik an Kollegen und Verlegern, aber auch um Fehler Max Webers in seinen Ver- öffentlichungen geht.3 Auch die für ihn charakteristischen Unterstreichungen und Anführungszeichen wurden nicht immer in die Abschriften übernommen. Besonders eklatant ist der Unterschied zwischen der überlieferten Abschrift von dritter Hand und dem Originalbrief Max Webers an Aby Warburg zwi- schen dem 9. und 15. Oktober 1907, der jetzt neu ediert vorgelegt werden kann.4 Die neu aufgenommenen Briefe verteilen sich auf die Jahre 1896 bis 1918, hängen also weder zeitlich noch inhaltlich zusammen. Sie müssen vom Leser den entsprechenden Bänden zugeordnet werden, aus denen sich auch der jeweilige Kontext ergibt. Da die hier mitgeteilten Briefe so weit gestreut sind, konnte der editorische Grundsatz, jeden Brief so zu kommentieren, daß er allein aus sich heraus verständlich ist, trotz Editorischer Vorbemerkungen und Kommentare nicht in allen Fällen eingelöst werden. Das Projekt I. Der Anstoß Dirk Kurbjuweit, stellvertretender Chefredakteur des Nachrichtenmagazins „Der Spiegel“, hatte vorgeschlagen, vor dem im Wiederaufbau befindlichen Berliner Stadtschloss ein Denkmal für Forty-Eighters zu errichten („Der Spiegel“ Nr. 14/2.4.2016, S. 123). Dabei gab es aber schon vor 1933 eine parlamentarische Erfahrungsbasis, die von den Akteuren 1848 hart erkämpft wurde. Vor allem das Wirken deutscher Revolutionäre wie Carl Schurz, Friedrich Hecker, Gustav Struve und Franz Sigel in Amerika ist hier weitestgehend unbekannt. It is another portion of the summary of research undertaken by a team of Polish historians in conjunction with their participation in the programme of the European Science Foundation entitled Cuius regio. An analysis of the cohesive and disruptive forces determining the attachment and commitment of (groups of) persons to and the cohesion within regions. The project’s assumptions were for original analyses to be conducted on five factors significant in the functioning of the region: administration (Paweł Jaworski), economy (Teresa Kulak), social groups (Wanda Musialik and Dorota Schreiber-Kurpiers), ethnic issues (Dorota Schreiber-Kurpiers) and the national and cultural identity of the region’s inhabitants (Teresa Kulak). In each of the spheres analysed in this book, what has been demonstrated is the prevalence of disintegrating factors in the region from the period of its seizure by the armies of Frederick II until the conclusion of World War I. Top-down efforts undertaken by the authorities aimed at integrating the region with the Prussian state, and then with the Reich, did not fully achieve their objectives. The split into the two sub-regions of Upper and Lower Silesia would seem to be inevitable, in spite of particular unifying elements, particularly in the economic sphere during the second half of the 19ʰ and beginning of the 20ʰ century.

He volunteered at Newark, NJ on 3 Sept 1861, and was honorably discharged at Newark on 8 Jul 1862 (This discharge was to accommodate his taking command of another Regiment). Wounded in the line of duty at Williamsburg, Virginia on 5 May 1862 by a gunshot wound to his right arm in action. He also served as Colonel of the 13th Regiment of New Jersey Volunteers from 5 August 1862 to 5 June 1865. He was later promoted to the rank of Brigadier General." "Ezra Ayes Carman was Chief Clerk of the United States Department of Agriculture from 1877 to 1885. He served on the Antietam Battlefield Board from 1894 to 1898 and he is acknowledged as probably the leading authority on that battle .
