President’s Message Hello Everyone, Well this month we look to have a great meeting. Not only will Eric Bodrock be speaking but I will also have a special announcement. Because of Eric, the announcement, and questions that all of you may have, I am asking that everyone do their best to be on time. We will be starting the meeting at 8pm. Those of you who can come a little early and help set up the tables and chairs, we would all appreciate it. I also understand that our new website is partially up and KC is hoping she will have the classifieds up and running this weekend. Hopefully once up and running I think everyone will find it very user friendly and hopefully we will all use the website to its fullest. We now have approximately 100 members. I think everyone will agree that is quite an accomplishment considering we are only one year old. I don’t think anyone ever expected it this soon but I think it is a testament to the members we have and the club itself. We must always remember that this club belongs to the members and that no person, nor a board can ever take this club away from those members. Should any of us ever forget that, it’s up to all of you to let us know. Next month we will celebrate our first year anniversary. We are still working on how we will celebrate it, but I can assure you it will be a lot of fun See all of you on Friday night. Dan

Program Committee

This months program is going to be presented by a good long time friend Eric Bodrock from Pittsburgh. It will be on Breeding Oddball Fish and will touch on a large variety or hard to breed and seldom bred aquarium fish. There is really something for everyone in this program. Eric will give you lot of information in a very short amount of time and will share some of his tricks with us so you may want to take notes. I am sure he will welcome questions at the end and I am sure there will be many.

Auction Committee

As you all should have seen in email, the club is purchasing business cards with two blank spaces for your name and phone number. The idea is that members that are selling fish as any auction can fulfill the need to have this information on the bag and at the same time promote the club. The hope was to get about 2000 cards but I’m not sure if we had enough volunteers to meet that goal. There were also a few members that asked for custom cards that they could purchase which would have their name on the already. So they just need to tape to the bag or put it between bags when the fish are double bagged. I did purchase some cards from Vistaprint to compare. Card stock was the same but UPS had the gloss finish and the lettering was smoother, along with the background more even col- ored. But both will fill my need. I’m also thinking of putting the name of the fish on the back of the card in the hope that some buyers would be more likely to keep it around with that information in- cluded.

We also will be printing labels for the bags with the seller ID and bag number as the bags come up for auction to then place them on the runners slip. We are trying to make them as legible as possible so it reduces the number of errors when I reconcile the computer records.

Lastly we are looking to have at least NEOfish members that sell at the next auction to supply us with a list of items on our form. We hope that this too will help in accurately paying our sellers along with helping to enforce our auction rules. Thanks again, Brian www.neo-fish.org

Committee Announcements (cont.) Website/Social Media Hi Fellow Fishheads,

The past month has been quite a busy one for the technology aspect of the club. A lot of progress has been made on www.neo-fish.org and new content and features are being added regularly – at least behind the scenes. If all goes well the forums should be “live” by our meeting on the 18th. Once the forums are complete I will be working on our Classifieds section.

I am in need of volunteers for a few things on the site. First, I need a few people willing to proofread the content pages on our site. It’s not the most glamorous job, but it needs to be done. Proofread- ers need to have a decent handle on spelling and grammar. This is a perfect opportunity to help the club (and me!) from behind the scenes. You will need to know the differences between and correct usage of: there, their, they’re, to, too, two, except, accept its, it’s… etcetera. (English major pro-tip: when proofreading it is helpful to start at the end of the sentence and work your way to the begin- ning of a sentence. This keeps your brain from going on auto-pilot and filling in missing words or making mental corrections as you read making it easier to catch errors.)

The second volunteer opportunity is as a moderator for the websites forums. Moderators will be responsible for keeping an eye on their section(s) and ensure that the forum rules are being adhered to; essentially you will be making sure everyone plays nice. There are a lot of sections to choose from so hopefully one of them will pique you interest.

Content, content, content. Every website needs dynamic content. . In non-geek speak: visitors to the site need to have something to read and see as well as new things to read and see needs to be added on a fairly regular basis. Without dynamic content there is no reason to visit a site more than once or twice. I would love to have a few people volunteer to write an article or a series of articles that I can publish on the site. You don’t need to be great writer or photographer - just a willing one. Articles don’t need to be long or complicated. Do you want to share your recipe for homemade fish food – Great! Maybe you have a funny story about your fish keeping experiences – Great! Perhaps you’ve learned that playing Barry White in your fish room encourages breeding – Great! Everyone has something to share. I can edit whatever you write with or for you and help it flow. Same with photos. I do have some articles in mind if you don’t have any ideas of what to write. Also, I have some thoughts on specific photos I’d like to see taken at meetings. Did I mention content?

Do you have pictures of your fish, tanks, from meetings or auctions that I can use on the site? Please email them to me with a brief description of what it is. For example if you send me a picture of a fish please let me know what kind it is and if it is a cichlid if it is Victorian, Central American etc. If it is a picture of a person please say who it is.

If any of these volunteer ideas sound like they may be appealing to you and you want more infor- mation about them shoot an email to me at [email protected] or call/text me 440-289-1722.

Finally - NEOfish is now on twitter with the name NEOfishCLUB; follow us and check out who in the aquatic world we are following! If you send a tweet about NEOfishCLUB please try to include the hashtag #InTheCle.

Brachygobius Xanthozona (Bumblebee Goby) – Spawning an Oddball by Joe Doyle

Background There are two species of go- bies in the hobby xanthozo- na and Brachygobius nunus. B. xanthozo- na have unbroken black solid stripes, where as B. nunus have occasional broken or spotted stripes. B. nunus are less toler- ant of freshwater than B. xanthozona. And B. nunus is often sold under the com- mon name Golden Banded Goby1.

Native Distributions include , South Vietnam, Jakarta (south-East ) and are found in river bottoms and where salt and freshwater mix in various salinities2. Range between 1.001 and 1.005 salinity. During typhoon season, rain water decreases salinity triggering spawning. Alkaline water is needed to maintain both species.

Bumblebee gobies are Carnivores and micro predators. While some report they can be trained to eat frozen bloodworms3, they prefer live micro foods such as Baby , , Micro worms, infusorians, and grindal worms. And they will only eat food that passes by; they will not go in search of food. This makes feeding a challenge.

Setup A 10 gallon aquarium containing a thin dusting of sand, sponge filter, and heater ranging in temperature from 76F to 78F was setup. One tablespoon of marine salt was added to each gallon of water to bring the salinity up to 1.005 or 5 PPT. Measured salinity using a hand held refractometer— recommend investing in this instrument, well worth knowing exactly how much salt is in the water. Both real & plastic barna- cles were added to the tank, leaving little room for free swimming along the bottom. 15 Watt aquarium bulb lit the aquarium 15 hours a day. I traded a fellow club member for a group of 8 proven spawning adults and barnacles used in previous spawns.

www.neo-fish.org

The barnacles contained, stunted in growth, Malaysian trumpet snails which helped clean up uneaten food. These snails never grew larger than 1/8” in size.

Feeding Fed the adult tank newly hatched baby brine shrimp (bbs) twice a day, once in the morning before leav- ing for work, and once after getting home from work, this gave enough time for most of the shrimp to be eaten. Offered live adult brine shrimp occasionally, but the adult preferred the newly hatched bbs. Any uneaten bbs would remain alive in the tank for many days.

Maintenance Weekly water changes of 30%. Found that the most number of eggs laid would occur after replacing removed water with DI (De-Ionized) water. RO water would also have the same effect, but DI water was the only type available at the time. This would cause a salinity shift from 1.005 down to 1.003 or less. Week one replaced 30% of water removed with DI Water (no salt added). Week two replaced 30% of water removed with Water containing enough marine salt to bring the salinity up to 1.005. Repeated weeks.

Spawning The female bumblebee goby can reach up to an inch and a half in size, and has a well rounded belly when full of eggs. Male bumblebee gobies only reach an inch to an inch and a quarter in size and have a flat stomach. The Bumblebee gobies would like clockwork. Two days after a water change, the males would turn a solid copper color and bite gently and shake at the female’s stomach, then race back to a cave. If the female followed, spawning would commence. The female would lay a small clutch of eggs and exit the cave. The male would fertilize the eggs then chase the female and lure her back in the cave. This routine repeats until the female has exhausted her supply of eggs. The male protects the cave and fans constant- ly the eggs. Any fish that swims within 2 inches of the cave is chased away from the chamber. After spawning occurs, this is a good time to remove any females or males not protecting any chambers con- taining eggs to a holding tank. The adults are micro predators and will not hesitate to eat their young. www.neo-fish.org

Hatching The eggs hatch in water 76F to 78F hatch in 4 days. Cooler water will cause a longer delay in hatching. The male will continue to protect the egg chamber as fry hatch and are pushed out of the cave. The male takes about 24 hours to finish helping the fry to become free swimming. Similar to how angel fish extract fry from their egg casing before the fry are free swimming, the male bumblebee goby extracts its young from the egg casing and forces the fry outside of the cave. Wiggling tails in the egg seem to trigger the response from the male. The fry fall to the sand on the bottom of the tank and remain near the bottom for a few days until their yoke sac is absorbed. When no eggs remain, remove the male.

Raising fry Green water was fed to the fry on day one, even though the yoke sac of the fry was not fully absorbed when added. This gives infusorians present in the green water a chance to establish in the fry tank, which will become first micro predator foods. Feed enough green water to fog the water slightly. Keep this same level of consistency in the fry tank until the beginning of week 3. Begin offering baby brine shrimp in addition to the green wa- ter. By the beginning of week 5, stop offering green water. The diet at this point should be 100% baby brine shrimp.

Closing Comments In 3 months the fry will be ¾” in size and large enough to turn in for BAP (Breeders Award Program). The fry will become sexually mature in 6 months and begin reproducing. Sex ratios seem to be 50% males to 50% females. I hope to see more people spawn this gem of a fish in the future. If you are looking for your next challenge, this could be your species Brachygo- bius xanthozona.

www.neo-fish.org

Let's talk about showing fish. By John Chapek

Since the bowl show season has begun I decided after judging the first 2 months that some guidance might be helpful for some of you that have not been around as long as the rest of us. If you haven't brought any fish in yet please continue to read this article and give it some consideration in the future.

First of all if it is done properly it is safe for the fish and there is very little risk, I can count on my hands how many fish I have lost at or after shows over many years. Let's begin.

The goal is to bring in the best possible example of the fish as possible. Beginning at the tip of the mouth look at the fish carefully. Is the mouth straight? next continue to the eyes, are they clear? Look at the gill plates, are they complete? How is the body shape? Is the spine straight? Are all the scales there? Are the scales flat against the body? Moving on to the fins are that tattered or torn? Are the fin rays straight? Are there any holes in the fins? How about the size? Is the fish full sized for it's species? Is it mature and in it's prime? Ideally were looking for PERFECTION, inspect BOTH sides of the fish! You actually should have done this when you purchased the fish.

Once upon a time I was judging a show and there was this beautiful large cichlid, I know that it had won awards in other shows it was for the most part perfect. I had a problem with it that day though it would not turn around so I could look at the other side. I tried removing the cover and using a prod to turn it and if it did turn it was only for a moment. Eventually I pulled the background off and saw that it was blind in the oth- er eye.

The first thing we should always do is find out what the maximum size is and look at photos which is easy to do these days with the computer. I can google even very rare fish and usually find some high quality photos of it, you can also find out all the rest of the scoop on the fish in just a few minutes. Knowing what you have is important.

Once you know what it is that you have and what a good specimen should look like, look at your fish and begin taking the steps to get it there. The first things to do is feed it well on a good variety of foods if you can, but make sure they are the right foods for the species you are working with. I am sure by now you've realized you should be doing all of the above when you first buy the fish! Maybe not all in that order but it is very basic. Good filtration and water changes are a must to raise a high quality fish along with good food.

So it's time to show the fish lets look at the container first. All the rules I have ever seen call for FLAT SIDED containers. There is a reason for that, the rounded bowls tend to distort the fish and the judge has a hard time looking at them. The container should be bare, with out plants or gravel but some classes like Bowl Beautiful would be exempt and possibly some family classes would allow floating plants to provide shelter for the fry. Gravel is also bad for fish at shows because if they are frightened they may dart and injure them selves in it. Another problem is if the gravel is colored it may reflect on to the fish making the color off.

Backgrounds should be solid dark colors are better for most fish every thing looks good

www.neo-fish.org

against black. I like to attach pieces of black trash bag using 4 strips of tape at the 4 cor- ners of a rectangular container and 2, 5, 7 and 11 o'clock on an old style glass drum bowl. They should be covered, the plastic tanks that come with the covers are perfect, I use plastic fish bags to cover drum bowls with rubber bands to hold them down around the top lip. Make it easy to remove for the judge.

Size is very important, you should not put a neon tetra in a 5 gallon tank it will make the fish look small on the other hand you shouldn't put a 12 inch long Oscar in a five gallon tank while it will make it look big it will not be comfortable.

Catching the fish, if you have to use a net use a soft one with fine nylon netting not the green course nets, they may scratch the fish or lift the scales. Before we catch the fish though we really need to get the show container ready. It should of proper size for the fish. It should be clean and free of scratches so the judge can easily see the fish. The water should also be clean BUT it is always better to use the water the fish is living in. I will take a siphon hose and using a rubber band I'll cover the end with some filter floss to strain the water. That end goes in the water and also protects the fish from being sucked up.

When I began the above paragraph I mentioned nets. Nets are not the best thing to use to catch your fish for a show. I will often catch small fish in a fish bag and transfer them carefully from there with my hand. I have also used plastic cups, bowls, and buckets which works best for larger fish. Catfish are best caught by hand or in a heavy plastic container.

When they are in the container put it in a box and transport it to the show. The darkness will calm the fish down and it will be less prone to darting around the container and injuring itself.

The last thing you should do is wipe down the outside of the container because chances are the outside got wet putting the fish in and it will also remove any smudges of finger prints so the judge can see it easily.

Talk to the judge after the judging if you can, but be polite. Ask why your fish won or lost they will be happy to help you and give you the tips you need to win in the future. Often we are jaded and believe we have the nicest Betta in the world but it's really full of flaws and while yo might not want to hear that they can show you what to look for in the future.

Have fun that is what it is really all about.
