Preface The IUCN Red List is the starting point for conservation! 2014 marks the 50th anniversary of the IUCN Red List. The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species™ has been assessing the conservation status of plants, fungi and animal species on a global scale for the past 50 years. Since its conception in 1964, the Red List has evolved to become the world’s most comprehensive information source on the extinction risk of animal, fungi and plant species. Far more than a list of species and their status, it is a powerful tool to inform and catalyze action among scientists, activists, and politicians. It is used by government agencies, wildlife departments, conservation-related non-governmental organizations (NGOs), natural resource planners, educational organizations, students, and the business community. The Red List process has become a massive enterprise involving the IUCN Global Species Program staff, partner organizations and experts in the IUCN Species Survival Commission and partner networks who compile the species information to make The IUCN Red List the indispensable product it is today. IUCN Bangladesh had published the fi rst Red List of Threatened Animals of Bangladesh in 2000. The list is being updated since December 2013 through a sub-project titled “Updating Species Red List of Bangladesh” under the “Strengthening Regional Cooperation for Wildlife Protection Project” (SRCWP) of the Bangladesh Forest Department which is funded by World Bank. As part of the IUCN Red List’s 50th anniversary campaign, Red List 50, IUCN Bangladesh Country Offi ce organized a day-long programme on 22 December 2014 at the Bangabandhu International Convention Center (BICC). The programme includes two technical sessions which participated by scientists, wildlife biologists, nature lovers, conservationists, students, media, policy makers, development partners, etc. The technical sessions highlighted research papers carried out by the individuals/institutions to uphold their contribution to enrich the knowledge of wildlife of Bangladesh in a wider context. This manuscript entitled “The Festschrift on the 50th Anniversary of The IUCN Red List of Threatened SpeciesTM” to commemorate this occasion contains keynote papers, full papers and abstracts that presented during the sessions of the programme. This is a fi rst of its kind of volume that compiled a wide range of research done in Bangladesh on wildlife diversity, conservation biology and policy. I would like to commend the authors for their contributions to the manuscript and for their commitment towards making this a reality. The papers have been reviewed by a panel of experts and have been revised and edited as per suggestions of the reviewers. The tireless efforts of the reviewers in making the papers up to the standard are gratefully acknowledged. Without their assistance this manuscript would not have been of the quality that it is now. I like to take this opportunity to express my sincere appreciation to all the members of Updating Species Red List of Bangladesh Project and all concerned people of publication work for publishing this manuscript to mark the 50th anniversary of the IUCN Red List. The papers received for the programme have been fi nally arranged in this book according to the presentation schedule of the technical sessions.     Dec. 11, 2013 – Jan. 01, 2014 Thailand (Central and Northern) Species Trip List Compiled by Carlos Sanchez (HO)= Distinctive enough to be counted as heard only Summary: After having traveled through much of the tropical Americas, I really wanted to begin exploring a new region of the world. Thailand instantly came to mind as a great entry point into the vast and diverse continent of Asia, home to some of the world’s most spectacular birds from giant hornbills to ornate pheasants to garrulous laughingthrushes and dazzling pittas. I took a little over three weeks to explore the central and northern parts of this spectacular country: the tropical rainforests of Kaeng Krachen, the saltpans of Pak Thale and the montane Himalayan foothill forests near Chiang Mai. I left absolutely dazzled by what I saw. Few words can describe the joy of having your first Great Hornbill, the size of a swan, plane overhead; the thousands of shorebirds in the saltpans of Pak Thale, where I saw critically endangered Spoon-billed Sandpiper; the tear-jerking surprise of having an Eared Pitta come to bathe at a forest pool in the late afternoon, surrounded by tail- quivering Siberian Blue Robins; or the fun of spending my birthday at Doi Lang, seeing Ultramarine Flycatcher, Spot-breasted Parrotbill, Fire-tailed Sunbird and more among a 100 or so species. Overall, I recorded over 430 species over the course of three weeks which is conservative relative to what is possible. Thailand was more than a birding experience for me. It was the Buddhist gong that would resonate through the villages in the early morning, the fresh and delightful cuisine produced out of a simple wok, the farmers faithfully tending to their rice paddies and the amusing frost chasers at the top of Doi Inthanon at dawn.

We saw all but a few of the endemic birds we were seeking (and the ones missed are mostly rarely seen), and had good weather throughout, with little rain hampering proceedings for any significant length of time. Among the avian highlights were five pitta species seen, with the Blue-banded, Blue-headed, and Black-and-crimson Pittas in particular putting on fantastic shows for all birders present. The Blue-banded was so spectacular it was an obvious shoe-in for one of the top trip birds of the tour from the moment we walked away. Amazingly, despite absolutely stunning views of a male Blue-headed Pitta showing his shimmering cerulean blue cap and deep purple underside to spectacular effect, he never even got a mention in the final highlights of the tour, which completely baffled me; he simply could not have been seen better, and birds simply cannot look any better! However, to mention only the endemics is to miss the mark, as some of the, other, less local birds create as much of a stir, and can bring with them as much fanfare.

Since early sixties, of necessity, industries of various kinds started to spring up slowly. It appears in a survey that ecological imbalance is being caused continuously due to discharge of various industrial wastes into air and water bodies. It has also been found that the intensity of pollution caused by the factories and industrial units depend on their type, location, raw materials, chemical effects, production process and discharge of gaseous, liquid and solid pollutants to the natural environment. All of Bangladesh's sewage and industrial wastes are flushed directly into Ganges and Brahmaputra Rivers. There are wide spread fears that as the region develops in industrial infrastructure, industrial pollution will accelerate, compounding the problems posed by raw municipal wastes. About 900 polluting industries in Bangladesh dispose of untreated industrial wastes directly into rivers, although the effluents contain 10 to 100 times the allowable levels permissible for human health. The Ganges-Brahmaputra delta is the largest delta in the world and the rivers contribute one-third of the global sediment transport to the world oceans. G. College, Raebareli, Raebareli districts of U.P. Its main aim was to find out fish diversity and their conservation status. The Uttar Pradesh, India results of the present study revealed the occurrence of 22 species belonging to 17 genera, 12 families and 6 orders. The family Cyprinidae were dominated by 8 species followed by Bagridae, Siluridae and Kumar Avinash Ophiocephalidae (2 species of each family).
