Its author, Imam al-Nawawi, needs no intro­ duction to Western Muslims, and the translator, Musa Furber, is indeed to be congratulated on his choice of this work and its fe­ licitous rendering into English. Its publication is a long-awaited event for both traditional Islamic knowledge and the point of that knowledge, which is practice. Allah Himself has used the word tibyan to describe the Holy Quran, the source of all knowledge, which He says He revealed tibyanan Ii kulli shay' or as a clarification of everything. That is, it exposits in detail the things no human being can know, not the mere physical and intellectual dimensions of man in the world, which anyone can findout, but the very context of man and his reality, the "why" of being itself, whence man came, why he ex­ ists, runs his full term, dies, and what he shall meet on the other side of the impenetrable veil of death. In the Quran, our reality itself is a sign, an ayah, something that points beyond itself for those who realize what it signifies, namelythe tawbid or Oneness of Allah. The exposition of these facts in the form of a divine scripture, which no human being could possibly produce, makes it the Supreme Book for mankind. The present work was designed and written to explain to men and women how best to benefit from the Book of Allah. The blessing of the Quran is that whoever recites it as it should be recited is changed by it, and brought by imperceptible degrees to XI ETIQUEITE WITH THE QURAN see why everything is the way it is. The seed of this knowledge is a humble intention to draw nearer to the Divine, the soil in which it takes root are reverence, awe, and love, and its fruit is the CEr­ titude in the eternal truths of faith that bring fe licity in this world and the next. It is well known to everyone conversant with the Islamic dis­ ciplines that the learning of many things does not teach wisdom, and that traditional books do not reveal their secrets or bestow their benefits to those without the key to them. This key is ad­ ab, the "right way of doing things," rendered in the title as "et­ iquette," but in its comprehensiveness a perennial difficulty to translate into English. Books, especially sacred ones, give their knowledge to those of adab, and Westerners who know some­ thing about the sciences of Islam have been waiting for a book like this in English for a long time. Due to negligent backups on my part, the text here had to be recov­ ered from a manuscript that was one or two revisions before the finalone printed in the firstedition . While I have done my best to duplicate Starlatch's masterful editorial work and to enter in all known mistakes to the firstedition, no human-save the Prophets (peace and blessings of God be upon them)-is saved from erring, and no book-save the Quran-is free from errors. Qur’anic Revisionism and the Case of Scott Kugle Mobeen Vaid Abstract Reformist authors in the West, most notably Scott Kugle, have called Islam’s prohibition of liwāṭ (sodomy) and other same-sex be - havior into question. Kugle’s “Sexuality, Diversity, and Ethics in the Agenda of Progressive Muslims” ( Progressive Muslims : 2003) and Homosexuality in Islam (2010) serve as the scholarly center for those who advocate sanctioning same-sex acts. Kugle traces the heritage of the Lot narrative’s exegesis to al-Tabari (d. 310/923), which, he contends, later exegetes came to regard as theologically axiomatic and thus beyond question. This study argues that Kugle’s critical methodological inconsistencies, misreading and misrepre - sentation of al-Tabari’s and other traditional works, as well as the anachronistic transposition of modern categories onto the classical sources, completely undermine his argument. Introduction Islam, like other major world religions (with the very recent exception of certain liberal denominations in the West), categorically prohibits all forms of same- sex erotic behavior. 1 Scholars have differed over questions of how particular homosexual acts should be technically categorized and/or punished, but they Mobeen Vaid (M.A. Islamic studies, Hartford Seminary) is a Muslim public intellectual and writer. He competed with philosophers with the power of his knowledge. He was a famous religious scholar of the Abbasi period. During the heyday of Islam, two schools of thought became famous. One school of thought became famous as the Motazilies and the other discipline of thought became known as the Ash'arites. Abu al-Hasan al-Ash'ari remained a supporter of the Mu'tazilites for forty years. Then there was a disagreement with Mu'tazilah about the issue of value. Imam al-Ghazali is one of the leading preachers of his Ash'arite school of thought. Abu al-Hasan al-Ash'ari inherited a passion for collecting books. As a child, he used to collect books from his hobby. Sometimes there are very difficult places in the path of knowledge, only a real student can pass through these places safely. He has been remembered by the Islamic world in very high words. There was a student who drank the ocean of knowledge but his thirst was not quenched.

He was dismayed how Muhammad al-Qahtani, the editor and commentator, could have been given a Ph.d. in Islamic faith (‘aqida) from Umm al-Qura University in Saudi Arabia for readying for publication a work as sadly wanting in authenticity as this.

    Al Azhar - Study Exchange Programme Egypt and England – a significant study exchange: Christians and Muslims learning about each other’s faith A significant development and strengthening of the relationship between the Anglican Communion and Al Azhar Al Sharif, the centre of Islamic learning in Cairo, Egypt, has taken place during November through two significant study visits. The first is that of the Grand Mufti of Egypt, His Eminence Dr Ali Gomaa, who delivered a talk at the University of Cambridge during the first week of November. A longer stay for study, of a month’s duration, was made by three younger Muslim scholars (El Sayed Mohamed Abdalla Amin, Farouk Rezq Bekhit Sayyid, Sameh Mustafa Muhammad Asal, graduate teaching assistants at the Faculty of Languages and Translation, Department of Islamic Studies in English, Al Azhar University) to Ridley Hall Theological College, Cambridge, England, November 1-29. Ridley Hall is well-known as a training centre for future Anglican clergy. Study exchange linked to Anglican Communion Al Azhar dialogue This double visit, of both Dr Gomaa, an eminent international Muslim scholar, and of three future Muslim religious leaders, is linked to the study exchange agreement signed by the Anglican Communion and Al Azhar Al Sharif in September 2005 at Lambeth Palace and ratified in the presence of Sheikh Al Azhar, Dr Mohamed Tantawy, at a meeting held at Al Azhar in September 2006.
