A Conservation Garden: The North Carolina Botanical Garden at 50 (1966-2016) Volume I Researched, compiled, and written by the North Carolina Botanical Garden Greenbriers February 2019 To the visionaries who came before us, the pragmatists who carried the vision forward, and the allies yet to come; and to past, present, and future seekers who find inspiration, encouragement, and solace at the North Carolina Botanical Garden. FOREWORD One would be hard pressed to walk into any botanical garden in the world and come across a compendium of historical information as complete as this one. What is even more amazing is that this compilation of the Garden’s 50-year history was authored by volunteers! Calling themselves the Greenbriers, this dedicated group of 12, under the able leadership of Joanne Lott, has spent countless hours researching, fact checking, and writing the definitive guide to the first 50 years of the North Carolina Botanical Garden. As you peruse Volume I from the Introduction to the Reference Timeline, perhaps even delve into the Volume II appendices, you will quickly come to the realization that this history goes much deeper than the last 50 years. Indeed, the story of the North Carolina Botanical Garden is the botanical legacy of the University of North Carolina, the nation’s oldest public university. Like the entangling Greenbrier vine, the two have been intertwined and inseparable since 1903 when the University’s first professor of botany, William Chambers Coker, established a teaching collection of trees and shrubs on campus which later became the Coker Arboretum. The Garden has many other branches that can trace their origin to the Coker legacy, including Battle Park, the UNC Herbarium, the Coker Pinetum, and The Rocks at the Coker/Burns estate. -

Thomas Herbarium Indiana University Southeast Photo: Purple Rocket by Richard Lyons 1 Scope The goal of this survey was to compile a rough list of herbaceous vascular plant species on the below described tract. The survey was conducted from July 11, 2010 through the end of the growing season in 2011. This report is the second of the survey and augments the first report of December 2010 by adding many of the spring ephemerals which were missed due to the late start in the 2010 season. Any extensive populations of invasive alien species were noted as well. Locale Description The Blackacre Preserve website states that the property consists of 170 acres in eastern Jefferson County Kentucky. It is the authors understanding that some additional acreage (size?) was appended to the southern border of the original 170 acre tract. The property is located at 3200 Tucker Station Rd. The tract is bordered on all sides by housing and urban areas; a railroad track runs along the north border. The terrain is of mostly gentle slopes with some wooded areas and open fields formerly used for pasture or crops. There are several ponds on the property; a limestone glade area constitutes the northeast corner of the tract. A small creek flows east to west across the tract north of the center. There are numerous foot trails, some designated and some rogue. An old section of Mann’s Lick road runs northward about midway in the tract. -

Native Plants for Virginia’s Capital Region Virginia Capital Region Native Plants a Plant Virginia Capital Region Natives! This guide showcases the attractive variety of plants native to the Virginia Capital Region, which includes Henrico, Hanover, City of Richmond, Chesterfield, Charles City, New Kent, Powhatan, Goochland, Cumberland, and Amelia. Native plant species have evolved within specific areas and been dispersed throughout their range without known human involvement. These plants form the primary structure of the living landscape and provide food and shelter for native animal species. Although this guide is not comprehensive, the native plants featured here were selected because they are attractive, relatively easy for the home gardener to acquire, easy to maintain, and offer various benefits to wildlife and the environment. This guide is being provided by the Plant RVA Natives Campaign to promote the use of these plants in the urban and suburban landscapes of the Virginia Capital Region for their many social, cultural, and economic benefits, and to Flowering Dogwood (Cornus florida) Eastern Tiger Swallowtail (Papilio glaucus) increase the availability of these native plants in retail centers throughout the region. MCMILLAN School of Agriculture, Forestry, and the Environment Clemson University Clemson, South Carolina 29634 AMY HACKNEY BLACKWELL Department of Biology Furman University Greenville, South Carolina 29613 and South Carolina Botanical Garden Clemson, South Carolina 29634 ABSTRACT We provide a list of all vascular plant specimens collected in the Carolinas by Mark Catesby that are housed in the historic herbaria at Oxford University and the Sloane Herbarium. The identifications along with notes on the significance of selected specimens are presented. This paper continues our work with Catesby’s collections that we began with his specimens in the Sloane Herbarium at the Natural History Museum, London. The availability of high-quality digital images published on the Oxford Herbarium’s website has facilitated our examination of these specimens. The collections themselves shed light on the nature of the flora of the Carolinas before European settlement, including the native ranges of several problematic taxa. The presence of a number of taxa known to be introduced to the Americas indicates that these introductions must have occurred prior to the 1720s. Cole published Grand Rapids Flora , a work that remains the most recent com - prehensive account of the plants specific to West Michigan and that is still consulted by those with interests in local native habitats, the historical status of rare and endangered plants once known from the area, and the flora of the region in general. However, to make Cole’s Flora , an important histori - cal document, more useful to the present day, an updated Checklist of the plants in her Flora is pre - sented in an alphabetic format that brings her plant names up-to-date with current nomenclature. The updated Checklist catalogs a total of 1275 taxa at the species level, whereas Cole’s (1901) Flora treated 1290 taxa (including varieties). Although Cole did not typically cite specimens in her Flora , it was documented by herbarium specimens that she collected and deposited in the Kent Scientific Institute (forerunner of the Grand Rapids Public Museum); a large number of Cole’s specimens are extant and are housed in the University of Michigan Herbarium, with a large number of duplicates located at the Michigan State University Herbarium and elsewhere. Cole also consulted specimens collected by students and colleagues in private collections, many of which are also extant. -

Cypress Swamp is located on the Natchez Trace Parkway at milemarker 122. The swamp supports a wide variety of vegetation including Bald Cypress and Water Tupelo trees. NPS photos.
