PERFORMED IDENTITIES: HEAVY METAL MUSICIANS BETWEEN 1984 and 1991 Bradley C. Klypchak a Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate
PERFORMED IDENTITIES: HEAVY METAL MUSICIANS BETWEEN 1984 AND 1991 Bradley C. Klypchak A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY May 2007 Committee: Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Dr. John Makay Graduate Faculty Representative Dr. Ron E. Shields Dr. Don McQuarie © 2007 Bradley C. Klypchak All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized. -

U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration REGISTER
U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration REGISTER A Daily Summary of Motor Carrier Applications and of Decisions and Notices Issued by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration DECISIONS AND NOTICES RELEASED June 22, 2015 -- 10:30 AM NOTICE Please note the timeframe required to revoke a motor carrier's operating authority for failing to have sufficient levels of insurance on file is a 33 day process. The process will only allow a carrier to hold operating authority without insurance reflected on our Licensing and Insurance database for up to three (3) days. Revocation decisions will be tied to our enforcement program which will focus on the operations of uninsured carriers. This process will further ensure that the public is adequately protected in case of a motor carrier crash. Accordingly, we are adopting the following procedure for revocation of authority; 1) The first notice will go out three (3) days after FMCSA receives notification from the insurance company that the carrier's policy will be cancelled in 30 days. This notification informs the carrier that it must provide evidence that it is in full compliance with FMCSA's insurance regulations within 30 days. 2) If the carrier has not complied with FMCSA's insurance requirements after 30 days, a final decision revoking the operating authority will be issued. A NOPALINE-TYPE OVERDRIVE ELEMENT, AND ITS INFLUENCE UPON AGROBACTERIUM-MEDIATED TRANSFORMATION FREQUENCY AND T-DNA COPY NUMBER IN NICOTIANA TA BA CUM A Thesis presented in partial fu lfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Molecular Genetics at Massey University, Palmerston North, New Zealand!Aotearoa ANDREW GILBERT GRIFFITHS 1996 Dedication This Thesis is dedicated to my parents Juliet, Merv and Pauline and to Tina 11 ABSTRACT Overdrive is an enhancer element located outside and adj acent to the right border of the T-DNA in Agrobacterium tumefaciens octopine-type tumour-inducing (Ti) plasmids. This element is necessary for maximal enhancement of T -strand production and subsequent A. tumefaciens-mediated plant transformation fr equency, and only the octopine-type overdrive had been characterised in any detail. A putative overdrive has been identified in the nopaline-type Ti-plasmid pTiT37 on the basis of its homology with known octo pine-type overdrive sequences, particularly the eight base-pair so called overdrive consensus core. The putative nopaline-type overdrive core, however, is only 75% homologous to that of all known overdrive core regions. Furthermore, as there are other sequences throughout the nopaline-type T-region that share 75% homology with the overdrive consensus core, the precise location of the nopaline-type overdrive is undetermined, although all nopaline-type T -region fragments exhibiting overdrive-like activity contained the putative overdrive core adjacent to the right border. -

An Interview with Stephen King by John C. Tibbetts
“We Walk Your Dog at Night!”: An Interview with Stephen King by John C. Tibbetts Stephen King is a phenomenon. He is without question the most popular writer of horror fiction of all time. In l973 he was living with his family in a trailor in Hampden, Maine, struggling to make a living as a high school teacher, when he published his first novel, Carrie, a tale of a girl with telekinetic powers. Its sales in hardcover were modest (l3,000) but enough to inspire a paperback reprint and a popular film adaption by Brian De Palma in l976. His “breakthrough” book, Salem's Lot, came out that year and quickly sold 3,000,000 copies. Within the next four years The Shining, The Stand, Night Shift, and The Dead Zone—all best-selling horror fiction—established King as the reigning Master of the Macabre. When he co- authored The Talisman in l984 with Peter Straub [See the Straub interview elsewhere in these pages], it was a publishing event unparalleled in modern times. Today over l00 million copies of his books are in print. King's work is frankly derivative of the traditions of l9th century gothic horror. Carrie is written in the style of the "epistolary" novel of the late l8th century. Salem's Lot is an update on Bram Stoker's vampire novel, Dracula. Christine is a variant on Oscar Wilde's The Portrait of Dorian Gray. Pet Sematary is a retelling of W. W. Jacobs' "The Monkey's Paw." And The Dark Half draws from the rich vein of "doppelganger" stories by Poe, Hoffmann, and Stevenson.
