UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA 1. INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Novel is human literature creation. Novel, do not, however, a present a documentary picture of life. Kennedy (1991:203) says that novel is a length story in prose, whose authortry to creat sense while we read, we experience actual life. The novel is a picture of real life and manner time when it was written.

Novel is one of written works in literature, especially those considered of superior or lasting artistic. Edgar V. Roberts and Hendry E. Jacobs (1993:1) say,

“Literature refers to compositions that tell stories, dramatize situations, express emotions, and analyze and advocate ideas.” Literature may be classified into four categories or genres: prose , , drama, and non-fiction prose which classed as imaginative literature.

Some of are fiction and some based on true stories. Both not only entertain but also give meaning messages and impression to readers. Most people are concerned with ordinary people and their problem in the societies in which they find themselves (Jhon Peck and Martin Coyle,1998:102).

In this paper, the writer in interested to analyze the description of theme in

Stephan King’s Novel Carrie.Stephen Edwin King is an American author

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA of horror, supernatural fiction, , , and . He is born

September 21, 1947 in Portland, Maine. His have sold more than 350 million copies, many of which have been adapted into feature films, miniseries, television shows, and comic books. King has published 54 novels, including seven under the pen name , and six non-fiction books. Carrie was his fourth novel, but it was the first one to be published, by publishing house Doubleday, released on April 5, 1974, with an approximate first print-run of 30,000 copies.

Several adaptations of Carrie have been released, including a 1976 feature film, a 1988 Broadway musical as well as a 2012 off-Broadway , a 1999 feature film sequel, a 2002 television film and a 2013 feature film.

The novel tells about about a teenage girl with powers. Carietta

"Carrie" White, a 16-year-old and her widowed mother, a fanatical Christianfundamentalist, has a vindictive and unstable personality and over the years has ruled Carrie harshly with repeated threats of damnation, as well as frequent physical abuse. Carrie does not fare much better at school, where her frumpy looks and lack of friends make her the subject of ridicule. Carrie gradually discovers her dormant telekinetic powers which she had apparently possessed since birth. They were once again awoken during the period incident which caused her to unknowingly shatter the light bulb. She also begins to really understand that she is telepathic.

Carrie White, a misfit and bullied high school girl who uses her newly discovered telekinetic powers to exact revenge on those who torment her, while in the

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA process causing one of the worst local disasters in American history. Stephen King has commented that he finds the work to be "raw" and "with a surprising power to hurt and horrify." It is one of the most frequently banned books in United

States schools. Much of the book uses newspaper clippings, magazine articles, letters, and excerpts from books to tell how Carrie destroyed the fictional town of

Chamberlain, Maine while exacting revenge on her sadistic classmates and her own mother Margaret.

Stephen King often using through news articles that would hint towards the horror of the Prom Night, but the articles would be cut off to keep the reader in suspense. This creates the foreboding of the novel. This mystery and suspense created gives the readers an enthralled to continue reading the novel. This also make the writer interested to analyze this story.

1.2 The Problem of the study

The problem of this study is :

• What is the main theme of this novel?

• How does the minor theme support the main theme?

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA 1.3 The Objective the study

The objective of study in this paper are :

• To describe the main theme

• To describe the theme of this novel, for example, major and minor theme

1.4 Scope of the Study

The scope of the study is just limit to explain the main theme and the sub theme in the novel Carrie by Stephen King .

1.5The Purpose for Choosing Topic

The purpose of the study is :

• By writing this paper, the writer wants to explore and find out how the theme and

sub theme that found in “Carrie” novel.

1.6The Significance of Study

The significance of the study are :

• To enrich the knowledge of the novel primary on the theme elements.

• To guide the reader in learning elements of the theme in the novel.

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA 1.7Reason for Choosing this Topic

The main reason to choose this topic is the story of the novel and the theme element. I want to introduce that theme element in literature not only as the basic story, but also can give us the lesson.

1.8The Methods of the study

The writer uses some research methods. The writer uses library method and internet method. Besides that, the writer also watches the movie that adapted from the novel for many times in order to able to identify the theme in the novel itself. The writer also searches the information about the novel and the author of the novel as her references.

The method of the study, the writer uses descriptive qualitative technique to write this paper. The writer collects the quotations of the novel and selects the quotations which contents events. The quotation is interpreted and analyzed, from the analysis takes the conclusion.

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA 2. THE REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

2.1 The Defenition of Novel

A novel is fictional piece of prose that is typically written in a style and presented as a bound book. Peck and Coyle in their book literary Terms and

Criticism say “the novel reflect a move away from an essentially religious view of life towards a new interest in the complexties of everyday experience”. Most novel are concered with ordinary people and their problems in the societies in which they find themselves.

John Peck and Martin Coyle said that a lot of novels have young people as the main , for it is often the young who feel them to be most at odds with conventional standards. You will have made considerable progress in understanding the particular novel you are reading if you can see how it sets certain individuals against society or their family.

Novel is as a length story about life experience of human being. It can be made base onimagination. The imagination is not really life experience, it is impossible in real life. Novel also identified as narrative text informing of prose with long shape that including some figure and fiction event and theme.

The most important element is the author. The events of the novel and the reaction of the reader depend upon what he or she chooses to do. Because without an

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA author there could be no book at all, but there is also a much more important reason: a novel is a world specially made in words by an author. “ have, of course, always been interested in the world around them, but the development of the novel reflects a move away from an esentially religious view of live towards a new interest in the complexities of everyday experience. Moat of novels are concerned with ordinary people and their problems in societies in which they find themselves” (John

Peck and Martin Coyle, 1984:102)

Welleck & Warren (1956: 75-135) says an intrinsic element, the element also comprises a number of extrinsic elements. The element in question among others, is the state of individual subjectivity authors who have attitudes, beliefs, and outlook on life all of which will affect the work that he wrote. In short, elements of the author biographies will also determine the pattern works it produces. Extrinsic element next is psychology, psychology of the author either in the form (which includes the process of creativity), psychology readers, as well as the application of psychological principles in the works. The division of the intrinsic elements of the structure works beloging traditional Martial Arts is the division based on the form and content elements- a dischotomous division of real people with little objection received.

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA 2.2 Theme

The theme is the basic story that dominated the subject matter of a literary work (Suharianto: 2005). The theme was the starting point in compiling the work of literary authors. This theme is to be conveyed and solved by the author through his story. The theme became the basis of development of the whole story; the theme was nature animates all parts of the story from beginning to end.

The expanding of story does not always parallel with the framework because the idea will often develop suitable with the author’s will. This is approved by

(Hamalian and Frederick R Karl, (1976: 23) where they claim that before writing a story, the author will frame his ideas first. But when he thinks that idea has become so usual in life and bored, he develops it out of the basic framework and makes his story more interisting to be enjoyed and implemented his readers.

Theme is one of fundamental components of fiction. Theme means what the novel can be up as saying. Another way of putting it would be to talk of the book. To determine the main meaning in anovel, we should know the definition of theme itself.

As a necessary part in a novel, it is important to know clearly what the theme is. Because it just have a little bit different with an ordinary sentence. “Although a single word may name an idea, it does not operate as an ide until it is put into a sentence or assertion. In other words, as idea a subject and a predicate before we can use it as basis of understanding. It is important to recognize than an assertion of an

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA idea is not the same as an ordinary sentence.” (Edgar V. Roberts & Henry E. Jacobs,

1993: 361)

We need to recognize the part of sentence by analyze the meaning of the sentence or the idea. Without any consideration to analyze the sentences, it could be difficult to recognize which one of both. Ideas are presented along with the expression or implication that certain conditions and should be highly valued.

Hamalian and Karl (1967: 323) said that all the stories have a theme purpose, no matter how deviously the author chooses to present it. At one time authors state their purpose, but such a procedure has become old fashioned; no self respecting writer at present will do more than imply this theme. He suggests it through character, atmosphere, , and style-thus theme is a kind of composite statement which requires our comprehension of numerous other elements.

A novel may have several themes. Themes often explore historically common or cross culturally recognizable ideas, such as ethical questions, and are usually implied rather than stated explicitly. Along with plot, character, setting, and style, theme is considered one of the fundamental components of fiction.

Frederick R. Karl (1967: 323) said that theme is a kind of composite statement which requires our comprehension of numerous other elements. The theme can not be anythingyou choose to make it. Every interpretation must be consistent with what the

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA author has provided. If you defend particular meaning that you feel deeply about, remember that it must coincide with every element of the story.

The theme gives the story focus, unity, impact and a point. The theme becomes clear by looking at what happens to the major characters. If the main character survives while others do not, it show that the author is rewarding his/her behavior.

Theme become the central idea and can be a message within the larger story of novel.

2.2.1 The Type of Theme

•Major theme (Main Theme)

Major theme is the most significant idea of the story, and often they are a part of the entire story. Major theme is the important in a literary work. A novel on war would have the major theme of war’s effect on humanity, whereas a would have the major theme of love.

• Minor theme (Additional theme)

Minor theme that is only appear for part of the narrative to be replaced by another minor theme in the narrative. They provide discussion points for a chapter or two, but do not found in the entire story. A novel on war may have minor themes such as the home front’s reaction to war or the political aspects of war. A romance novel may have minor themes such as flirtation, marriage, and fidelity.

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA The pluralities of theme are usually specified by separating it into basic and additional theme. Key themes being the overall idea in the story and using minor themes in order to slip the small ideas, another is also considered beneficial to the reader.

2.2.2. Theme Functions

Theme is an element of a story that binds together various other essential elements of a narrative. theme allows readers to relate to the characters and their struggles, and also to feel invested in the outcome.Theme gives readers better understanding of the main character’s conflicts, experiences, discoveries and emotions as they are derived from them. Most importantly, Theme can also be expressed in a more abstract way as an idea or moral; the message of the story.

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA 3. THE ANALYSIS OF THE THEME

3.1 Major Theme

3.1.1 The life of Teenager

The major theme is the storyline of the story. The plot, the and the supporting characters all together comprise the major theme of any novels. Main theme in novel Carrie is The life of teenager.

As many and tales go, are a necessary element. They are the main message or lesson to be learned from reading a cautionary story. Although themes and morals are both major ideas in a story, they are different in that themes do not necessarily serve to teach a lesson, whereas morals always do. A theme is simply an idea to be examined, whereas a moral is a clear lesson to be learned.

For all of her lonely childhood and misunderstood teenage life, Carrie, an only child, whose father abandoned his family and later died in a construction accident, was secretly abused and beaten into submission by her mentally ill religiously- fanatical mother.

Carietta "Carrie" White is a 16-year-old girlthat was born on September 21, 1963 to Margaret Brigham and Ralph White, and her grandparents were Judith and John

Brigham. She lived in the fictional town of Chamberlain in Maine. Both of Carrie's parents were religious fanatics that thought intercourse in any way (even in marriage)

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA is sinful. However, Carrie was conceived through a form of marital rape when Ralph attacked Margaret while drunk. Ralph died before Carrie was born and Carrie was abused by her mother.

Carrie was constantly mistreated by her classmates because of her differences.

Since first grade Carrie had been the school's scapegoat and outcast. Indeed, Carrie was at the bottom of the social pyramid, but what no one knew, not even her mother, was that Carrietta White was no ordinary girl, as she had been blessed or cursed, with hidden telekinetic and telepathic powers that were dormant during her youth, but brought to full force by the time she was in high school after she unexpectedly had her first period in the girl's locker room.

Carrie's life was just as awful. Margaret didn't allow Carrie to have any friends, take interest in things such as celebrities and fashion, listen to rock music, sleep with a pillow, or even take showers as Margaret believes everything is bad, evil, a sin and godless; Carrie must only take baths. Behind closed doors, Carrie was beaten by her mother into submission on a daily basis and regularly slapped Carrie in her face and grabbed and dragged, violently shoved and locked into a prayer closet by her mother.

Especially on the day she came home after the shower incident (with the implication, that this was one out of many instances, where Carrie was forced into the closet).

Carrie is sometimes locked in the closet by everyone for days on end without food or water or even bathroom breaks. Carrie is so controlled by her mother she is even

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA forced to wear unbecoming and outdated clothes and forbidden to wear the color red, as Margaret believes red is the Devil's Color.

A few days later at school, when all the drama had died down, Carrie was unexpectedly approached by Ross, who asked her to go to the senior prom with him. Tommy was a talented and handsome jock who unlike most of the cool crowd, was an actually very nice and well meaning teenager. Once, Tommy had even been approached by the Red Sox Team, who wanted to recruit him after he graduated. He also was the boyfriend of one of the popular girls who tormented

Carrie earlier in the book, .

Sue felt guilty for her mistreatment towards Carrie and honestly wanted to make it up to her by becoming her friend, and decided to sacrifice going to the prom and lent Carrie her potential prom date. This was a very good thing because Carrie also had a secret crush on Tommy.

When Carrie told her mother about the prom offer, Margaret threw her tea in

Carrie's face and ranted and raved. She told Carrie that the boys always come after the blood and that all boys want from girls is sex; how they like to take the virgins in their cars to do dirty, ungodly things with them. Margaret finally told Carrie that she would not allow her daughter to engage in such sinfulness after all she'd been taught.

She then proceeded to slap Carrie across the face and ordered her to go in the closet to pray, but Carrie refused. As Margaret tried to hit Carrie again, Carrie stood up to

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA her mother and stopped Margaret's hand in mid-air with her telekinesis, preventing the blow from reaching her face. Carrie told her mother that she wanted to live her own life and that things were going to change and be different, and that she was going to the prom with or without Margaret's permission and that no one would stop her; the ultimate blasphemy to her.

This incident would cause a chain reaction of events to occur that would lead to not only Carrie's demise but also hundreds of others, whether guilty or innocent.

Since Carrie had no previous knowledge about the concept of the student's rejection of Carrie became even fiercer. Tragically, when a so-called

"prank" at her senior prom involving pig blood pushed her to her breaking point and beyond her limits, Carrie finally snapped and used the wild talents she possessed to seek her hostile revenge to make her bullies and enemies pay for their cruel actions.

Carrie mercilessly eliminated anyone who had ever hurt, neglected, or underestimated her before returning home after leaving a path of destruction in her wake to ultimately confront (and finally kill) her crazy, homicidal mother before dying on that very same night that ended up making national history. In , an entire town was destroyed, taking 440 lives with it.

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA 3.2 Minor Theme

3.2.1 Violences

Margaret didn't allow Carrie to have any friends, take interest in things such as celebrities and fashion, listen to rock music, sleep with a pillow, or even take showers as Margaret believes everything is bad, evil, a sin and godless; Carrie must only take baths. Behind closed doors, Carrie was beaten by her mother into submission on a daily basis and regularly slapped Carrie in her face and grabbed and dragged, violently shoved and locked into a prayer closet by her mother. Sometimes,

Carrie also locked in the closet by everyone for days on end without food or water or even bathroom breaks.

After Margaret found out about the incident (the day when Carrie had her first period) from the school she cruelly punished Carrie. She beat Carrie with her favorite

Bible, forced her on her knees with her to pray and locked Carrie in the closet against her will for hours to ask God for "forgiveness" for having committed the "original sin" of becoming a woman due to showering naked with the other girls at school, which Margaret forbid.

“’You're a woman now’, Margaret said softly. Carrie tried to keep her composure, but felt her face twisting and crumpling and could not help but breakdown. 'Why didn't you tell me?' she cried. 'Oh Momma, I was so scared, I thought I was dying! And the girls all made fun and threw things’ and Carrie saw

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA Momma had been holding her favorite leather Bible, and as she walked towards her, she struck out her backhand and the Bible smacked the side of Carrie's face. The blow caused her to fall to the floor and she began to weep loudly. 'Come to your closet woman', Margaret demanded."

3.2.2 Appearances

Carrie White is described as being slightly unattractive, she is a "frog among swans". In appearance Carrie is slightly overweight with pimples on her neck, on her back and on her buttocks. She has blonde hair and very pale skin. In the first section of the story, Carrie had a greasy face with blackheads and wore stockings that were always run, running, or about to run and she was always showing sweat stains under the arms of her blouses.

Carrie is especially unattractive because of her mother's control over her. In the second section of the story, Carrie attempts to fix herself up on the night of the prom and makes an effort in enhancing her appearance, she is described as actually looking pretty, for the first time in her entire life. Carrie lived in the very small and peaceful town of Chamberlain, Maine with her severely mentally unstable mother who had cut her daughter off from all social life due to her religious beliefs.

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA 3.2.3Bullying

One year Carrie was given the cruel nickname "Puddin' Pop" by everyone, and the next year she became known as being called a cruel nickname "Pizza Face" by everyone. A boy named Billy Preston put peanut butter in her hair when she fell asleep in study hall; the books deliberately knocked from her desk; the pinches, the pokes, the wedgies, the legs outstretched in the cafeteria aisles to trip her; the obscene notes tucked into her purse when she wasn't looking. These were all the things Carrie faced day in and day out.

Once when Carrie was at the school picnic she bent down to pray and the seam of her skirt loudly got ripped by everyone at the crack of her butt, causing everyone to laugh at Carrie. In sports, Carrie was always missing the ball, even in kickball or clumsily running into the net during volleyball. Carrie is also uncoordinated in her movements and once fell flat on her face during Dance class in sophomore year and chipped a tooth. One time Chris Hargensen called her house phone after school from the downtown "Kelly Fruit Company", where all the popular teens hung out to ask her if she knew that "Pig-Poop" was spelled: C-A-R-R-I-E.

When Carrie was sixteen years old, she unexpectedly had her first period while taking a shower in the girls locker room after gym class. Due to her mother's religious believes, Margaret refused to discuss the concept of menstruation with

Carrie, resulting in Carrie to think she was internally bleeding to death. The idea that

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA this could be the girl's first period did not occur to Carrie's female classmates. As with everything else, Carrie was viciously teased and mercilessly bullied by the girls in her physical education class who all laughed hysterically as they threw tampons, mini-towels and sanitary napkins at her while loudly chanting: "PLUG IT UP!", over and over again.

Miss Desjardin came out of her office to stop the commotion. And to stop the hysterical Carrie from panicking, Miss Desjardin slapped her across the face which caused a lightbulb above them to explode and a bucket of baseball bats to knock over all by itself. Miss Desjardin calmed Carrie down and reassured her everything was going to be okay and that she wasn't dying. Afterwards she explained to Carrie what menstruation was and told her it was a natural part of womanhood.

3.2.4 The Supernatural Power

Where Carrie's special abilities manifested all by itself without her even trying. It was usually trigger by her own inner frustration and private , and would flare whenever she lost her temper. For example, when Carrie was almost three years old she encountered a young and beautiful neighbor girl named Stella Horan who was sunbathing topless. Seeing this, Carrie asked about her "Dirty Pillows" (a phrase Carrie's mother installed into her head referring to breast).

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA When Margaret caught Carrie telling something to Stella about Margaret,

Margaret severely hates Carrie and forced, regular grabbed and dragged, and violently shoved and locked her into the house with Margaret. Suddenly, a shower of hail fell on the White's bungalow, while Carrie was being harshly abused by

Margaret. Minutes later a rain of stones pelted against their home causing several damages on the White's property, and a large mahogany dinner table was sent flying through one of the house's window, shattering the glass. Carrie's powers were strong even when she was a small child and she was also able to read other people's minds and inner thoughts when they were close enough to her, namely Miss Desjardin, the gym instructor, who secretly harbored both disgust and pity for the young lady.

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA 4. CONCLUSION AND SUGGESTION

4.1 Conclusion

Theme is the central idea of the work of literature in Stephen King’s novel:

King's formula for learning to write well is: "Read and write four to six hours a day. If you cannot find the time for that, you can't expect to become a good writer."

He sets out each day with a quota of 2000 words and will not stop writing until it is met. He also has a simple definition for talent in writing: "If you wrote something for which someone sent you a check, if you cashed the check and it didn't bounce, and if you then paid the light bill with the money, I consider you talented.

When asked why he writes, King responds: "The answer to that is fairly simple there was nothing else I was made to do. I was made to write stories and I love to write stories. That's why I do it. I really can't imagine doing anything else and I can't imagine not doing what I do." He is also often asked why he writes such terrifying stories and he answers with another question: "Why do you assume I have a choice?"King usually begins the story creation process by imagining a "what if" scenario, such as what would happen if a writer is kidnapped by a sadistic nurse in

Colorado.

King often uses authors as characters, or includes mention of fictional books in his stories, and novels, such as Paul Sheldon who is the main character in Misery, adult in It, Ben Mears in Salem's Lot, and Jack
