Harmoniously round – as the name itself suggests – Locorotondo owes its name to the shape of the first settlement, which was established sometime around the year 1000. Dove la Murgia degrada si incontra la Valle d’Itria, un cuscinetto di verde a metà strada tra Adriatico e Jonio e su questa pianura, circondata da alture, si affaccia Locorotondo. Sorge linda e silente sulla sommità di un colle. Armoniosamente tondeggiante come il toponimo stesso suggerisce, Locorotondo deve il suo nome alla morfologia assunta dal primo centro abitato, sorto attorno al mille. Locorotondo (Italy) | Light 804 | Lighting The first huts of this farming village were, in fact, built on a fitted ‘plateau’, right next to one another, with a circular plan, almost in an attempt to protect the land they had managed to squeeze out of the surrounding oak forests, to make it arable and fertile. Since June 2001, it has been part of the Italian Association called “I borghi più belli d’Italia” (the most beautiful villages in Italy), and since 2010 it has been a part of the ‘Bandiera Arancione’ Association of the Italian Touring Club – chosen among the 10 most beautiful towns in Southern Italy. Locorotondo è uno dei maggiori centri turistici della Valle d’Itria e fa parte della Terra dei Trulli. Nel giugno del 2001 viene inserito nella associazione Italiana “I borghi più belli d’Italia” e dal 2010 aderisce all’associazione “Bandiera Arancione” del Touring Club Italiano e viene scelto tra i primi 10 paesi più belli del Sud Italia. BY ANDREW SESSA Click here to view snapshots from Andrew's journey. Squinting into the sun, and with my quads burning, I pedal through the last hill of a cliff-climbing ride. The road flattens as I cycle around one more corner, and I can finally appreciate my surroundings. In front of me, a centuries-old, sun-bleached stone tower rises, its cylindrical shape narrowing as it reaches toward the sky. Together with its brethren, which I can barely see in the distance, it stands guard over miles of pale calcite cliffs whose rocky summits peek out between clumps of spiky sea grass and shrubs. Beyond, the Adriatic Sea extends to the horizon, its azure waters turning turquoise near the rocks below. I breathe deep. After a recent rain, the air smells fresh and green, with a healthy helping of salt, too. I see a sign that reads "Villaggio Paradiso," and I can almost believe its promise. Maybe I really have pedaled my way to paradise. This is Puglia - the most picturesque piece of Italy you've probably never heard of.
