North Tomb "Ancient Burial Site"

Located north of town in Beiling Park, this famous site is one of the area's top attractions. It took eight years the burial site of Huang Taiji, founder of the and son of , finally completed in 1643. A path leading to the tomb's entrance (the Worshiping Walk) is lined with statues of elephants, lions and horses. Combined with the surrounding cedar trees, this site is a dramatic setting for meditation and exploration.

Xinle Relics "Lots of Historical Stuff Under the Dirt"

Located north of town, just west of Beiling Park, this site harbors massive historical significance for the entire nation of China. Relics dating back to the Neolithic Age 7,200 years ago have been uncovered here. And even today, anthropologists continue to cull history from its soil. Stone artifacts, earthenware, stunning woodcarvings, and an ancient house have been unearthed from within its borders. Even Shenyang's city symbol, the Sun Bird Sculpture, was discovered from this ancient tribal site.

Liaoning Provincial Museum "A Taste of History"

In this museum one can find a treasure trove of relics and a true surprise in terms of scope. Considered one of 's largest museums, it harbors more than 3,000 items of historical awe. The main attraction is the pair of massive skeletons of two dinosaurs spread out across the first floor. Visitors can also enjoy classic Chinese paintings, pottery, porcelain, copper-ware and even embroidery, many of which date to ancient times. Small, polished oracle bones etched with inscriptions are its most prized items. Oracle bones are believed to be the earliest form of written Chinese language.

9.18 Museum "A War Museum"

This is not the museum to visit if you're in search of something warm and uplifting. It derives its name from September 18, 1931 the day Japanese forces invaded China and subsequently occupied Shenyang and the surrounding peninsula. Mukden "Symbol of Chinese Culture"

The jewel of Shenyang, the Imperial Palace was commissioned in 1625 by Nurhaci, the Manchu chieftain who consolidated the northern tribes in order to dislodge the Korean Joseon Dynasty and Chinese Ming. After his demise, Nurhaci's descendants went on to establish the Qing Dynasty, a feat that would have been impossible without the momentum Nurhaci set by Wilson44691 in motion. The architecture and layout of the palace bear a striking resemblance to 's famous , especially the rooftop and embellishments. The smaller-scale palace has 300 rooms, 20 courtyards and exhibits Manchu, Mongolian and Han architectural styles. Relics abound and the palace grounds include a famous tiger-veined double-edged sword used by Nurhaci. Indoor photography is prohibited here.

Summer Palace "Fun With Water"

Despite possessing the kind of name that hints of royalty, or, at the very least, a famous rich person, this dome of fun caters to people in swim trunks. Twisting water slides, wading pools, and regular swimming areas for laps and floating on colorful tubes create a permanent mid-July atmosphere. The more serious minded can huff and groan in the center's gym. And for true family convenience, the center offers several dining options.

Shenyang Steam Locomotive Exhibition Hall "A Nod to Trains"

It is only fitting that the first city in China to develop railway lines lays claim to the largest railroad museum in the country. The Engine Exhibition Hall, its most impressive display, houses 20 steam engines from all over the globe. A DB1 miniature steam locomotive from America, the museum's oldest, dates back to 1907. And there is also a rare Japanese SL 7 steam locomotive built by Suzuki. The Popular Science Exhibition Hall is also a crowd pleaser and is known to make visitors ponder the marvels of machinery as well as why this museum is located in the Shenyang Botanical Garden.

Shengjing Ancient Cultural Street "Superb Block of Architecture"

This magnificent thoroughfare that fronts the Imperial Palace, offers a stunning array of classic from the Qing dynasty. The street is highlighted by the ornate Fujinmen Gate on the east end and the Huaiyuanmen Gate (started 1616 AD and then rebuilt in 1994) on the west end. Between the two gates, visitors can shop for souvenirs, paintings and by Katrina_S calligraphy. The street also hosts many cultural festivities including dragon dancing and lantern shows.

Applauded as a "wonder of the world" this flooded cave, which was hollowed out 5 million years ago, allows visitors to enjoy spelunking and boating at the same time. The cave is so vast its entrance harbors an underground wharf, docking up to 40 guide boats. The boats silently drift through the illuminated cave revealing a weird world of stalagmites, by Unsonique stalactites, and bizarre rock formations that would cause even Salvador Dali to gasp. Guides accompany each boat.
