Three psychoanalysts, who left us with important traces of their work, directed the university academic services dedicated respectively to the psychiatric Hospital, Psychosocial Center and Child and Adolescent service. They were none other than Christian Muller, Pierre Bernard Schneider and René Henny. One evening, I heard a lecture at the psychiatric hospital regarding the analysis of a child. While the lecturer was projecting the child’s drawings, I remember being extremely impressed by the ease in which he went back and forth from the drawing's contents to the unconscious functioning of his little patient. Everything seemed extraordinarily clear and so easily accessible. The experience fascinated me and started me down a path that would revolutionize my life. I promptly left internal medicine and became interested in psychiatry and psychoanalysis. I wanted to start an internship at the university academic service that dealt with children and adolescents, but Dr. Henny told me that before working with children it was advisable to start working with adults. Therefore, I began an internship in the psychiatric hospital for adults. I was given a schizophrenic patient and a supervisor: I learned a lot. I did not know it back then, but in these first few steps I came in direct contact with two great themes of child psychoanalysis. The first theme has to do with the relative ease of directly accessing their unconscious (but is it theirs or ours?). Actually, this brings with it one of the major risks and challenges for the psychoanalyst who deals with children: that is the risk of contaminating the child’s mind with his own unconscious content or, on the contrary, defending himself from the violence of this content with what is nothing more than an adult resistance of his own unknown “infantile” part, commonly known as a "brilliant interpretation". The second theme is that the child assumes the existence of an adult who has brought him into the world ... "before the adults". The child needs his parents not only for the safety of his life, but as a guarantee of his growth and mental development. Later, when I actually started working for the academic service for children and adolescents (I stayed there for about four years before returning to Italy), I took note of a another theme. Given the incompleteness of the child, the work with him or for him assumes that the analyst's mind is able to take on a group dimension: once again, it’s not just dealing with ghosts, but real presences that have a powerful impact on the mental development of the child himself. The psychoanalyst who treats a child, therefore, plays a delicate and complex game linked to factors that influence each other reciprocally. The stage reached by a child in his development and the quality of the family and non-family environment compete in either promoting treatment or making it difficult (sometimes to the point of discouraging it.). The child analyst knows this all too well, but it is in this area that she/he is called to do her first exercise in abstinence. She/He must avoid, on the one hand, the temptation of having omnipotent control over the environment, and, on the other hand, the fascination in considering herself above these dynamics as if she/he were the bearer of a unique, special, and lifesaving message. Whenever possible, she/he will try to interact with the environment and work to transform it. This leads to a further complication in child analysis: the indications (which are also quite neglected for adults, nowadays, too). Not all of a child's symptoms require analysis, even though they often require sophisticated analytical competence to act upon. The recent debate on autism has shown just how complex and multifaceted working with children is. Last but not least: the child for whom help is asked is often the ambassador of a family problem for which he bears the brunt of the pain and punishment. What are the analyst's tools to alleviate these? 5 For all of these reasons, I have called my paper: Children and Treatment. It is inspired by the beautiful book by Laurence Kahn (Kahn, 2004), but it is also a grateful tribute to my training itinerary. The path I took taught me not only the theoretical and clinical work as an analyst, but the deep ethical meaning behind taking care of someone: not only the constant refinement of one’s own therapeutic tools, but a deeper questioning of their usefulness and possible use for a given patient at any time, in any situation.

Ernest Freud is best known as the 18-month-old child that Sigmund Freud observed playing ‘fort, da’ and described in Beyond the Pleasure Principle (1920). What is less known is that he was also Freud’s only grandchild to become a psychoanalyst. Once, when asked when his psychoanalytic training began, W. Ernest Freud replied, ‘In my mother’s belly.’ Ernest was the son of Freud’s second daughter, Sophie Freud, and Max Halberstadt, a portrait photographer. He was born Ernst Wolfgang Halberstadt on 11 March 1914 in Hamburg, Germany, but changed his name to W. Ernest Freud after the Second World War, partly because he felt his German sounding name would be a liability in post-war England and partly because he always felt closer to the Freud side of his family. When Ernest was born, Freud sent a note to Sandor Ferenczi: ‘Dear friend, Tonight (10th/11th) at 3 o’clock a little boy, my first grandchild! Very strange! An oldish feeling, respect for the wonders of sexuality!’ (Brabant, 1993, p. 545) Ernest’s life was full of tragedy and courage, love and work. He enjoyed a blissful infancy with his mother, while his father was at war; and when his father returned, Ernest experienced him as an unwelcome intruder. When Ernest was four, his brother, Heinerle, was born and he too was experienced as an intruder. After the war, Sophie became pregnant again but contracted the Spanish Flu and died, with her third baby in her womb.

The Early History of Psychoanalysis in San Francisco Daniel Benveniste, Ph.D. Caracas, Venezuela The early history of psychoanalysis in San Francisco formally begins with the opening of Alfred Kroeber’s psychoanalytic office in 1918 and ends with the death of Siegfried Bernfeld in 1953. Between those years, San Francisco witnessed a small group of Americans and European émigrés coming together and creating the foundation of psychoanalysis in San Francisco. The issues dominating the day were those of lay analysis, psychoanalytic training models and World War II. Within this small psychoanalytic community, there were a number of extremely creative analysts who, along with the rest, participated in some rare moments in which a creative and ecumenical spirit prevailed and others in which divisiveness limited them. Without a historical context, those of us in the depth psychologies tend to become arrogant and assert the ahistorical and timeless truth of our views. We fall victim to "the narcissism of minor differences" and project our dreaded other onto the various others around us whether they be pop psychology innovators, old guard upholders of the dogma, or just our theoretical cousins. But psychoanalysis is not a natural science. It is a historical science. Nathan Adler used to say, "Every generation must rediscover psychoanalysis for itself." And I would add that we must contextualize our discoveries and re-discoveries in the social, historical and economic moment in which we are situated. There are many reasons for recalling the early history of the depth psychologies in San Francisco.

    A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE BRITISH PSYCHOANALYTICAL SOCIETY Ken Robinson When Ernest Jones set about establishing psychoanalysis in Britain, two intertwining tasks faced him: establishing the reputation of psychoanalysis as a respectable pursuit and defining an identity for it as a discipline that was distinct from but related to cognate disciplines. This latter concern with identity would remain central to the development of the British Society for decades to come, though its inflection would shift as the Society sought first to mark out British psychoanalysis as having its own character within the International Psychoanalytical Association, and then to find a way of holding together warring identities within the Society. Establishing Psychoanalysis: The London Society Ernest Jones’ diary for 1913 contains the simple entry for October 30: “Ψα meeting. Psycho-med. dinner” (Archives of the British Psychoanalytical Society, hereafter Archives). This was the first meeting of the London Psychoanalytical Society. In early August Jones had returned to London from ignominious exile in Canada after damaging accusations of inappropriate sexual conduct in relation to children. Having spent time in London and Europe the previous year, he now returned permanently, via Budapest where from June he had received analysis from Ferenczi. Once in London he wasted no time in beginning practice as a psychoanalyst, seeing his first patient on the 14th August (Diary 1913, Archives), though he would soon take a brief break to participate in what would turn out to be a troublesome Munich Congress in September (for Jones’s biography generally, see Maddox [2006]). Jones came back to a London that showed a growing interest in unconscious phenomena and abnormal psychology.

    Downloaded by [New York University] at 03:54 14 August 2016 Journeys in Psychoanalysis Spanning six decades, this collection, Journeys in Psychoanalysis: The selected works of Elizabeth Spillius, traces the arc of her career from anthropology and entering psychoanalysis ‘almost by accident’, to becoming one of her generation’s leading scholars of Melanie Klein. Born in 1924 in Ontario, Canada, Elizabeth arrived at the London School of Economics for postgraduate studies in the 1950s and soon embarked on a ground- breaking study of family life in the East End of London that produced a PhD and her fi rst book, Family and Social Network, under her maiden name Elizabeth Bott. Published by the Tavistock Institute in 1957, it remains one of the most infl uential works published on the sociology of the family. These papers are a testament to the luminous intellect and understated compassion that Elizabeth has always brought to her work. They vividly map not just the evolution of Elizabeth’s career but the development of Melanie Klein’s thought, often drawing in compelling fashion on the writer’s own experiences with her patients. Each is written with the clarity and concision that makes diffi cult concepts eminently comprehensible to psychoanalysts, psychoanalytic psychother- apists and laymen alike. Elizabeth Spillius studied general psychology at the University of Toronto (1945), social anthropology at the University of Chicago, the London School of Economics and the Tavistock Institute of Human Relations (1945–1957) and psychoanalysis at the Institute of Psychoanalysi s in London (1956 to the present). Her paternal grandfather, Charles Lewis Tiffany, was the founder of Tiffany & Co., a New York jewelry company. Her father, Louis Comfort Tiffany, was a successful artist in the glass industry. Dorothy’s relationship with her father was not stable. Her husband, Robert Burlingham, was an American physician who gradu- ated from Harvard Medical School. Her husband was emotionally unstable which led to an intolerable situation in her marriage. Because of this, in addition to the health and behavioral problems of her older son, Bob, Dorothy hired psychoanalyst, Anna Freud, to treat Bob’s asthma and bad behaviors. Mrs. Burlingham and Ms. Freud became excellent partners in the area of child psychoanalysis.
